47th sentai gather on the edge of the field -Nakamura faces them

Inoue guesses first -even before Nakamura speaks -he has that grin again

"Crap -here we go again" he thinks " where now?"

Nakamura seems pleased actually " Pack your crap -we are moving -and no -I have no idea where too -be ready to go in an hour"

For 47th -an hour is more than enough.

Don't look at the plane! -note the poor guys mess in the background.
And somewhere here is Iwaya's missing tooth brush -absolutely irreplaceable!

47th arrive at their new location.......

The unit taxi's to what may, or may not be the ready room - one brush hut is really beginning to look like any brush hut to them now
Engines splutter into silence, and tired, sweaty men begin to wearily clamber down onto the hot, baking strip.

'God, what a dump" remarks Juni " After a string of dumps" adds Iwaya
"wonder if I can get a toothbrush here?"
'By the look of this place, I'd be happy with a clean cup of water thanks" adds Hyakutake, you are right -this is a dump"
Dilli field -a single strip field again -carved from the jungle again
Too much heat, and dust, again.
And far too many signs of recent enemy activity -again.

Nakamura strides over to them. he has to be pleased -all of the sentai have arrived -for once.
"Miyazaki -get refuelled ASAP! -CAP!, Juni - your flight too -and the rest of you - for gods sake stop gawking -get your birds fuelled and ready -we are back in the war gentlemen
If the enemy are going to come to the DEI -well, he has to come through here"
Hyakutake laughs -tilting his head Miyazaki's way - 'Ahh -my good friend -see what delights promotion brings you! -have a good flight -rest assured we will save the best bed for you!"
Miyazaki scowls.
But Nakamura is right. there is little time for bed hunting today - Timor is the front line, and the men quickly, as tired as they are, begin to attend to their steeds.

47th -the fire brigade formation, is ready -will the enemy come?

maybe its coincidence -maybe (and im sure the men think this way) its because its them -the enemy do not raid today.
CAP is flown, the usual orientation flights take place.
Nakamura holds a long, and difficult conversation with the base maintenance commander.
He can supply tyres, bullets, fuel
repairs -major, or even minor to the aero plants - no. they will have to be done in Kendari -at the least.
Minor panel beating -yes -major battle damage -no
Nothing more, nothing less -until the next convoy -if it came.

The men spend the day settling in -thats easy -find the hut -lay your mat -put up the mosquito net.
The dusk comes quickly and abruptly here -and regretfully the heat takes many, many hours to dissapate.
Our men are gathered around the inevitable small fire -and the bottles are going around..
Chess is now out of favour -cards are now rearely played - there is little point when nobody now has any money.
Conversation rules the night -any topic -any topic now other than the war.

Miyazaki passes the bottle to Iwaya
he knows little of his fellow flight leaders -he suspects some do not like him -not that he cares -but he is curious to find out how they have survived so long .
"And you Iwaya? -he asks 'how do you find yourself in such fine company?"

It is a good question

A Priveledge upbringing
Bullied at school
A Scowling father -"you fat little pig -you will never succeed at anything!"
A future -doomed to business -a future of imprisoment tied to a desk
The flight -the airforce
A Father -who maybe did understand................and secretly began to support him
The airforce -bullied and bashed -again
And not being able to fit in -or fly
A Detirmination to succeeed - and failure
"Im sending you to China -terrorise someone there with your crappy flying!"
Loneliness

And then, then 47th sentai - and the war
And now Hyakutake, Inoue, Juni, Nakamura -his true place now in the world.
They didn't bully him
He wasn't fat anymore

"Just lucky I guess" he throws the bottle back, drinks deep -to hide his embarressment
"just lucky"

Long range Combat operations –or standing patrols, take considerable skill.
They require good timing, good navigation –and careful, very careful monitoring of fuel loads –even for long legged Japanese fighters.

47th have plenty of all these skills

Again Juni leads his 5 pilots south east, Izumida tucked in to the left of the vee, Ginowa to the right.
Further out to the right again, Hyakutake, with Hidaki on his flank, and to the left Inoue leads Inuzuki and Igarashi.

These are no longer just names, this is 47th’s crack team, looking for trouble

Juni see’s them first –slightly below, just to his right –the small dots –growing rapidly, moving right to left at about 30 degrees.
Crossing the coast
Bold as brass the barsteds
Bombers!
A new sort –un identified –twin engined mediums.
Juni clicks the Mike –and is greeted with silence.
Never mind –he’ll do it the old fashioned way.
Wings rock –good –his men see them
Fingers curl around the throttle, it vibrates, alive, eager –he coaxes it gently forward to its stop, and the bellow takes on that great roar – stick gently forward, dive slightly, right rudder, right rudder, just a touch, a bit of stick, a bit of stick…….., , safety off –lots of the barsted, lots –growing, growing – and Juni leans in towards the enemy, eyes blank, cold, dead pools of darkness as the tracer reaches out…RRRRRRRRRAAAAATATATATATATAT!
At over 500 mph closing speed interception is quick and violent –and lightning fast –guns hammering for just the moment - -flashes off the enemy! –hints of hits – and 47th blast through the bomber formation, engines bellowing.

He is calm today –cold, and calm.
Stick back, back, climbing, climbing, left wing over, God the 44 rolls so slow compared to the 43!, rolling, rolling into the chandell turn, looking hard over the left shoulder – keeping the wing tip pointed towards the enemy –and Izumida slides into the lead as he levels out, and they dive down again towards the enemy, the dust and grass floating crazily in the spinning sunlight
Ginowa still there? –good.
No enemy fighters.?
No twin tail barsteds?
Good

2 bombers smoking
Better

The B-26 have veered left –formation still strong – these are disciplined men – lesser squadrons would have shattered under the shock of that attack.

The B-26’s move into a shallow dive –throttles to the wall –and their leader wings them right again –back towards Lautern –back under 47th’s noses.

B-26 -270 mph max, KI-44 -370.
No contest.

Izumida leads Juni now, taking the inside of the bank, , the flight slashing into the left flank of the enemy –daring the counter fire –going for the smoking cripples.
Guns fire, tracer streams
Pieces of aluminium –a wheel, flutter, slowly, slowly –flash by his screen as the shells hit home

And they are through –diving away, diving clear –engine bellowing, bellowing as he gasps in the mask –breath, breath –eyes alone for the enemy – now above and to the right.
He calculates..
5 seconds ammo gone –enough for one burst yet –pick, pick a target –no not him –he’s going down, well done Izumuda -, well done.

Climb, climb –come on, come on –and, roll in now, the world narrowing in as Juni wheels his flight in again, into the flank of the formation – and he gets another good burst –but crap –he’s sprayed it –and the guns hiss empty and he continues the bank into a roll, stays inverted, falling away, the world rises, he rights himself, and fuel is gone –time for home.

Juni’s limbs tremble –the body aches
5000 feet –mask off –wipe the sweat from his eyes, and Izumida is alongside –grinning –that’s his third kill now –and suddenly Juni feels Old, old , old.
But he is still alive –and some Americans are not.
He turns his flight for home
He feels no pity.

Hyakutake at that moment –is having problems.

His flight has launched a standard formation attack –hitting the bombers as Juni makes his second pass.
At this point the enemy formation commander has brought the bombers around to the right again – and one, for what ever reason has missed the turn.
The Tigers have pounced –and Hyakutake has closed into within 200 feet of the belly of the B-26 –and delivered a long, heavy, killing blow.
However the bomber has done what has happened so many times before – kept right on flying, and Hyakutake has been coming in even closer for a second go –when a new man, Uchida, has cut in –and finished the job.

One moment the bomber is there –fair in the canopy –the next moment it is a tumbling mess –bright flame blossoming –and a body comes tumbling out of a belly hatch –tumbling, falling –and shockingly, slammed into his right wing.

For a moment Hyakutake freezes as the world around him fills with bomber debris – and then he is clear –and he stares with amazement at his wing tip.

Uchida’s victim has struck the top rear aft corner of the wing –a glancing blow probably – but nearly all of the aileron has gone with him………….

Other things are not so good either he quickly discovers – the rudder is sloppy, and even as he throttles back –he can tell from the drag –and the indicator –that in all probability a wheel has lowered.

“crap”

Hyakutakes first instinct is to bail – but below is nothing but jungle –and Lautern is just there –there.
“Ok, you clown” he murmers to himself “lets do this”

He’s giving every inch of rudder he has, and the beast still tries to roll away on him.
“Come on you #$%^$# -fly straight!”
5 miles to go, 5000 feet
His left leg is beginning to ache.
He slides the canopy open –dust and debris swirl briefly as he slips sideways again

“CRAP!”
The enemy bombs are falling –smack onto the strip he is aiming for………
Do the flaps work?
If I deploy them……………..
%$#@ -can’t debate it, just do it.

Wind? –where the Truk is the sock?
Dust, dust –ok –its going that way……..

Straight in then

2000 feet –a mile to go………

The great engine coughs, coughs –and stutters to a halt.

There is stupidity, and there is stupidity
Hyakutake is not that stupid.
He lets his bird flip over –and hits his release.
The rush of air –stomach lurching –pull!

He will land at the very front gate to the seaplane base –safely.
Surprisingly he will have a very good afternoon –the ALF unit will feed him a fantastic meal of lobster –and fly him home

Combat report 47th sentai
11/1/43

17 fighters (Juni B , Hyakutake, Inoue flights) intercepted approx 27 twin engined medium bombers over Lautern
2 confirmed kills, 3 probables

2 fighters lost, 4 damaged
No casualties

Attacks pressed home with commendable endeavour and skill.
I fully expect to see one of the enemy 300 number squadrons escorting the bombers any day now –he cannot possibly continue unescorted missions here in Timor now with the weight of fighter defence we currently have.
I do wish we would hit him for a change.

Fighting the Tide
By Colonel Nakamura – an Amazon production

…….to say that I was annoyed by these latest orders would be an understatement
From China, to Lae –an epic move in itself –then to the outpost at mearuke –to truk, then down to Lunga for the aborted ambush, back to lae………….
We had been shuffled hither and thither –never given a chance to rest, or organise.
And now, at no notice what so ever, Dilli, Timor.
Yet, and this really surprised me, morale could not be better.
Shorn of all comforts, all things familiar, my men were left with just one thing.

Each other

And it could not have been better. We began our fight at Dilli with a bang – 3 , or more enemy down, and although we suffered some damage –no one was lost. Better yet, many of the Warrant Officers were now becoming true fighter pilots –capable, quick, and adaptable.
Despite shortages, the crappy field, the indifferent Army command, we were, I was, confident, and happy.
As January 43 began to roll, I could look forward with only confidence……………

All, of course, are very pleased to see Hyakutake home – none more so than himself, until that evening that is.

Just after dark it begins to rain. 47th are used to tropical showers, they come, they go.
This one turns into another one of those classic tropical thunderstorms – sheeting rain, crashing thunder and lightning.
Rivers of water soon stream across the field, into the crew areas –and 47th quickly find that the shelters they have been assigned are useless –torrents of water are soon pouring into them, onto them.
Worse –the wind howls –and demolishes many of the shelters.
Juni blunders through the dark – the storm is quite simply terrifying –even to a hardened fighter pilot, and he finds himself trying to shelter under the wing of a fighter –around him chaos reigns –ground crews frantically trying to tie down fighters before the wind sends them into unauthorised flight.
“Holy crap” he shouts as Iwaya joins him -their shelter now shattered “ this is $%$#@! Up!”
Lightning cracks –and he catches a glimpse of Iwaya’s white face –grinning
“”can you swim?” He shouts back over the tumult
“Not really!”
“I think we will have to learn soon!”
And for a moment or two –as the wind howled, and the rain roared down –Juni actually began to think that he would.

Dawn breaks –and the clean up begins.
The storm has damaged 2 more planes – one has flipped clean over onto its back –another has been struck by what looks like the remains of a canvas folding chair, tearing a nasty rent into its side.
This leaves 27 planes available – but Nakamura will not let them fly –not until they have been checked at least.

There is no breakfast – the cookery area is simply gone………

47th struggle the first CAP into the air around 10 AM –its pilots glad to be gone –the sun is now baking hot –and Dilli –still saturated, is simply a gigantic steam bath.

But the real trouble for 47th begins at about 2PM

The midday meal is the usual simple fare –rice, some fish –some local taro .
Inoue is struck first, cramps, the sweats –that tightness.

The runs

This wave of the runs strikes nearly 30 of 47th’s 37 pilots –only one flight missing the curse – and the effect is devastating.
By 1700 Nakamura knows –if the enemy come tomorrow –he will be in trouble

Miyazaki holds the vibrating control stick with an easy confidence.
The day is clear, the tropical haze yet to develop –in fact, here at 10000 feet it is a delightful day to fly.
For all of the 5 pilots on this patrol, sitting, strapped into a seat inside a small aluminium cockpit, at 10000 feet – its far, far from a delightful day to fly.

Six planes departed on this patrol, already one has returned-the pilot overcome by the stomach cramps and nausea.
Another of his pilots is made of sterner stuff –he has simply conducted his toilet where he is –and will worry about it when they return.
The CAP MUST BE flown………….

The Patrol consists of conducting great wide, almost rambling circles to the south east of Dilli – from here the field is easily spotted even at many miles range- the idea being to give enough warning of incoming raiders –enough time for the fast climbing Tigers to get up.

Miyazaki is bored.
To the south east can be ascertained an impression of Timors eastern most point-Lautern .
Miyazaki is under orders –keep Dilli in sight.

He leads the flight into another sweeping turn – his neck aches from the constant twisting and turning –and if his stomach rumbles like that again………
The radio suddenly bursts into life –an incoherent babble –American Voices!
High pitched, urgent.
He doesn’t need to be able to understand the language –its tone is unmistakeable –some one some where is in combat.
One of his wing men begins to gestulate wildly – there! –there! –and he spots it too –the little flashes of silver, that sudden reflection of the sun – wings over Lautern!

Miyazaki does not hesitate……… at a pinch you can see Dilli from Lautern …….at a pinch.
He wheels the flight south east –warms his guns and they accelerate towards the action.
The flight bounces in the rough air over the hills – the range closes rapidly –and the fight comes into view – a handful of Dilli’s zeros are wheeling about in a great turning fight with 3, maybe 4 unlucky P-38’s –the fight descending now through 7000 even as they roar into join the attack
The Tojo dives well –it rolls less so – and Miyazaki botches it –skidding his flight across the axis of the fight –some guns fire –wild spraying fire even as the great fight seems to split suddenly up all over the sky.

He’s missed, damn it!--… and the sky is clear suddenly – the 38’s have broken free.
“reform on me!”, reform on me!’
Three of his men respond –one though is silent –not unusual with the state of radios lately………….

Nakumara meets him on the field, meets him half way to the ready room
“Where is Sasabe?”
“Has he not returned?”
Nakamura’s face darkens –and the first alarm bells ring Miyazaki’s mind
“A wonder any of you returned –do you know just how many 38’s jumped you?”
‘Jumped us? – jumped us –we saw 4 –maybe 5 enemy –we engaged –they fled.”
For reasons he cannot understand, this barsted is angry with him –angry for going after the enemy?
‘ Our Navy friends tell me that you never saw the 38’s hit Sasabe –is that right?”
“Sasabe?”
“Since when do 38’s ever, ever, under ANY circumstances hang around at 10000 feet or lower – other than when they have dozens of their friends waiting to swoop down on unsuspecting saps like YOU !”
“But”…….
“But nothing!, Sasabe is dead –he never knew what hit him, and obviously you don’t either”
Nakumara draws a breath
‘Let me be perfectly clear flight leader. If I set CAP over Dilli –I want Cap over Dilli.
Not flights swanning everywhere.
We will fight as a team, or not at all. Is that clear?”

Miyazaki, despite all, is still a product of Japans military training
He comes to rigid attention, heels clacking in the dust
“HEI!”

Operations report 13/1/43

5 Tigers engaged in fight along with a dozen type 0’s against 3-5 P-38’s
Fight then bounced by some 20-30 P-38’s who made a single pass before breaking away.
One Tiger lost.
Navy reports several enemy shot down, for one of their own lost.

Enemy identified as 331st? unit –or possibly 333/332nd?

Currently 26 fighters available, many pilots still ill.
Sentai rated at 50% efficient.

14/1/43.

Nakamura takes a gamble –stands the Sentai down for 24 hrs.
By dusk his gamble pays off –only 3 birds remain broken.
The base force men receive a crate of scotch (God knows where that come from).
Nakamura wishes he could do more.

Our men spend the day sorting out the mess from the storm – huts are repaired, steps are built, paths and beds remade.
Inoue finds Miyazaki gathering Sasabe’s possessions –a pathetic small bundle –the watch may be useful to some one, the bundle of undelivered letters now a real problem.
“should we deliver these Inoue –do we hang on to these, even when he is dead?”
“Of course. What is more precious than these last words to a mother?”
Miyazaki drops his head, there is silence for a while in the hut.
When he looks up –his eyes glisten.
“Remind me never to be such a #@$%head again Inoue. I have learnt my lesson. Nakumara is right. This is not a war about machines –but men.”

Inoue cannot answer. Miyazaki may be right –but this war was getting bigger, and bigger every day –and deep in his heart he feared, and feared greatly –that maybe it was all about the machines after all.

Nice film!  Makes me wonder how many morale films Japan made in during the war.  It would be very intresting to watch some of them.  I'll have to look into that

Note about the AA gun...of course its useless....it not loaded!   That's the problem with your AA!

Keep up the great job Herb, and good luck to the men of the 47th!

Hyakutake is hunting.
The tricky bit is –the quarry knows it is being hunted.

Right now, a giant cumulonimbus is slipping down past his right wing –well some of it anyway –the rest, even here at 15000 feet -towers well above him, a moving mountain of moisture.
Hyakutake is familiar with these clouds –one brought him down nearly a year ago –a lesson he will never forget.

This particular floating mountain is not alone –a great range of them march across the sky today –totally dwarfing the island of Timor below.
It’s a different world to the one common men live in
For Hyakutake – -this is the world he loves.

His quarry is some 2 miles ahead –just a speck against the great walls of white and gray –skirting the great storm –looking for the valley between the mountains.
Has the Hudson spotted him? Hyakutake is not sure – but the chances of catching him by surprise are remote –recon flights don’t survive by flying half asleep

But that’s the trick –the exciting bit –catching the slippery buggars

His fighter bucks hard –banging into invisible walls, as he trys to cut a corner or two –tricky tricky –the quarry is slipping through a great valley of cloud –trying to find a clear shot of Dilli below.

The Hudson is clearly visible now –Hyakutake tries to sink below it – get a blind spot.
Deliberately he slips the cover of the trigger –he might just get a shot………

The Hudson abruptly wings over to its right –and dives towards the next mountain –for a moment the sun shines palely on it –giving it a weird yellow glow –then it plunges into the shadows .
‘Crap”
Hyakutake slams the throttle –wings over –and dives –and curses as the bomber plunges into the storm.
He dives towards its base –rain suddenly beats on the screen –“#$%^ that” –he pulls out and heads for the other side of the mountain – and almost yells in shock as the Hudson bursts into the sunshine –shocked and surprised faces staring only metres away as the bombers cockpit flashes past in the opposite direction
His fighter screams as he barrels into the attack –the bomber banking desperately to the left, trying to get inside his turn, back into the safety of the clouds

Hyakutake chops his throttle-slams on flaps –and is well inside the bombers flank –its upper turret still trying to bear –range a mere 30 metres – a hopeless task –Hyakutake has them cold.
He fires – crack!,crack! –and nothing.
Nothing, nothing nothing.
Total gun failure –and even as he leans forward to smash his guns in frustration –the turret has HIM cold – and………
Nothing nothing, nothing

Two planes turning hard towards the cloud –mere metres apart –and
two men beating against jammed machinery.

And then for that split moment the two men look at each other –and the ludicrous nature of the situation passes between them.
The Australian smiles –shrugs
Hyakutake laughs –ah the vagrancies of war.
He rolls away and down –the Hudson passes into the safety of the cloud.

Hyakutake smiles for the entire return journey.

47th spend another day on CAP – officially there is no contacts or action, Hyakutake decides to keep the jammed turret a secret to himself –a memory to savour in his old age –although his jammed Guns will be reported.

Japan has flooded Timor with air power –and for 3 days now the bombers have not come –not that this really means anything –come again they will.

This does not mean of course, that nothing happens.
Hyakutake has his fun
Inoue has an engine failure during a test flight – but has no problems in getting the bird back down
Hyakutakes jammed guns means an inspection of all ammunition on the base –and , no surprise, 30% is found swollen through moisture damage.
12 men on the base contract malaria
Dysentery brings down 3 others.
Some idiot drops a 250 KG bomb on his foot –and crushes it.
There is a theft discovered from the rice stores.
2 more planes are declared flight worthy –but 3 more are grounded .
And Nakamura’s paper war continues –for once he thinks he is winning.

47th have returned to routine –living one day at a time.

The evening of the 15th finishes very quietly, but the night is busy indeed.
At 10 pm half a dozen low gray shapes appear off the beaches of Dilli –these destroyers are not the 3rd or even 2nd raters usually deployed by the Japanese navy for supply runs –but front line vessels –selected especially for speed –and fighting ability if the enemy should try to stop them.

The beaches of Dilli burst into life –from hidden creeks, from under literally hundreds of camouflage nets, a veritable fleet of canoes, barges, small craft, and even a few rafts, swarm out to the destroyers flanks.

For the next 4 hours frantic activity fills the beach –and everyone is involved.
Our men find themselves at the end of a human chain, passing manna from heaven.

“Hey Iwaya!” grunts Hyakutake, as he passes the next heavy article to him “ I think your Angel has been at work!”
Iwaya can only grin –there is truth in the statement.
A smorgasbord of parts moves from hand to hand –and at times exclamations of delight are heard as particularly rare and valuable parts move from the beaches to the dark holes they will be stored in.

Nakamura views the work with satisfaction. His Base officer is in almost a frenzy of delight as he inspects each package, and directs them to various bunkers and store dumps –even a few propellers are observed being lugged ashore –along with wheels, oil drums, spark plugs –God in Heaven –even some tools
“Hyakutake is definitely right” he thinks “Iwaya does have an Angel. Heaven help 47th if something happens to him”

By 2 in the morning the deed is done –and with a cheerful blast on a ships siren, the grey sleek ships depart into the dark.
By Dawn, the beaches are clear –over 150 tons of spares have been squirreled away –and the reward is immediate.

The base officer cannot hide his satisfaction and pride as he salutes Nakamura at the dawn briefing “ 36 fighters available for combat again sir”

Extract from “Fighting the Tide” by Colonel Nakamura –an Amazon publication

….that first supply run, at such short notice, was a tremendous fillip to my , and 47ths’ morale.
Just having all 36 planes available was good.
The un expected ceasure of attacks from the enemy, was better.
Knowing that we were not alone in this battle: that the high command stood behind us –ready to deploy its navy in our need – was tremendous.
We heard little at this time of the war –Burma apparently stable –the usual chaos in china –the absence of action in the Pacific – and we had become used to thinking that we alone were fighting this war.
The enemy attack would, must soon come.
I had a vague impression that the empire had its main strength behind me – in the DEI, at Kendari, in the islands to the north –and in the fleet itself.
As most of my men (and I) tried to snatch a nap during the stink of that hot day, it was a re assuring thought……………….

Toady is no different from the string of days before. Inoue drags himself from his sleeping mat in the pre dawn cool –washed briefly in the basin, surveys the world from the flap of his tent.
There are too many bugs for him in the palm frond huts some of his friends share –this is his excuse anyway –an older wiser brain tells him that the huts are just too an inviting target……….

The area to the mess is muddy –and slippery –yesterdays brief storms.
Breakfast –the usual jokes, profanity –references to the human anatomy.
Then, as dawn breaks –to work.

His ground crew are cheerful today –full bellies can do that –and with 2 big fat transports arriving today –with more supplies, and promised mail, what is there to be glum about?

He bows briefly, curtly to the crew chief –his plane is mostly good – the brakes –well , he might choose the grass when he returns suggests the chief with a wry smile.
No dud shells?
No – the old chief has inspected every single one as they have been fed into the wings and cowl –they will be good.

To work
Its going to be a busy day – Nakamura is sweating over these two fat buggars in the harbour –honour demands they be protected.

His Tojo performs well today –starting easily, and the climb is smooth, swift, a delight.
The oxygen mask is still dry andfresh as they slip through 12000, inoue leads his flight to 20000, flying to his orders.
The skies are brilliantly clear, the air smooth. The enemy must, surely must come.

The zeros come – and mix in, and the patrol drones on.

Nakamura believes the enemy will come today –and has stacked Dilli with fighters on patrol – fighters from Koepang, from bases further east –from Dilli itself. Everywhere he looks he can see the small dots – a dozen planes here, a dozen or so there.
Inoue smiles behind the mask – if they come today –they will have a true fight indeed.

“Enemy fighters”
Uchida is calm. He might have been saying ‘its raining” for the lack of excitement.
Inoue swings his head towards the sun –a momentary panic flashes through him –am I being jumped? -No - then where the ?………..
“Where please ? –you scared the crap out of me Uchida!’
Still no excitement “3 p-38’s –3 o clock low –check your 3 friend”
Inoue banks slightly –crap –he’s right, 3 twin tailed devils, cruising as if they owned the entire world, heading north east.
Inoue quickly checks up sun, peering intently, looking for the trap.
Empty sky
#$%^$#@ it, this is too good to waste.
He rocks his wings, once, and pushes straight over into the dive, and his flight, and the zeros follow him down.

The dive is steep and fast, and the range closes rapidly –and still they do not see the death diving on them.
Inoue lines up the leading fighter, and Oh so sweet –his guns hammer out, the tracer floating down –striking, striking the startled target.
The three 38’s scatter like pigeons before the hawk –2 going left, one going right , Inoue’s men flashing pasts, pulling up , pulling up hard for the second pass –which wont be needed –2 broken 38’s tumble down, the zero’s have finished the job.

The third?, the third? –where did? – and Inoue see’s more dots on the horizon, bombers!
No hesitation, he banks hard right, his friends following, engine snarling.
Enemy planes peeling of from the bombers –twin engines, British?
No time to think – both formations charge each other, guns spitting.
Head to head the enemy looms, larger and larger, Inoue slams the left rudder, skidding his fighter violently to the side, away from the seeking tracer, the shock of the enemies passing, the flash of tilting wings
“barsteds going left –more a impression than thought –hard, hard left rudder, hard left stick now, top rudder, top rudder, breath! Truk it!, breath!, where are they ?

The enemy have turned hard left, the tojos’ too, a whirling circle of potential death
There is time to think about it – time to even appreciate it – the world almost vertical in the screen, the ache of the neck as he strains to watch the enemy, the weight, oh, truk, the weight of the Gee’s………………
The Tojo’s turn quicker…………
Impressions of a sky full of whirling , diving , snarling fighters – and this little private war, 4 on 5..
The tojo’s turn tighter………… ‘Going to get you my friend…………”

The beaufighter floats into the sight, almost, almost………CRRRRRRRRRRACK!
Missed……………..Come on, come on………………….CRRRRRRRRRACK!
Some hits…………
And then the barsteds roll onto their backs, dive away………….

Hard right stick, hard right rudders, groaning as the gees come off, come on, stomach sagging as Inoue pulls into a climb.
“Bombers!” –get the bombers!”
A glance, a glimpse
His 2 wing men are still there, Uchida to the left, Igarashi to the right.

The sky is suddenly , magically clear –except for them, and the bombers above- neatly stacked –30 odd mitchells
There is no hesitation, 3 vs 30
The tigers race at max throttle parallel under the enemy bombers –Inoue looking up, looking up, they are less than 1000 feet above, and falling behind .

Stick hard back –the world drops away –and a fat belly flashes into view –and Inoue fires again –briefly, tellingly.
Vertical climb, bombers below, below –speed, falling, falling –Hard stick forward, hard left rudder –and the great torque of the blade slings him hard around in the sky, his fighter pirouetting on the spot –and Inoue plumments down into the tail of the formation – and shoots again.

The B25’s cockpit takes the full effect –it stumbles –and even as Inoue dives away , guns now empty, there is no doubt

Inoue has finally broken his duck.

18/1/43 Operations report 47th sentai

Heavy enemy raids on Lautern, Kendari
3sorties flown AM –13 Tojos’, 17 zero intercepted 3 P38, 16 Beaufighters, 30 plus medium bombers in vicinity of Lautern

1 Tojo lost (rookie pilot)
3 P38 claimed shot down (2 to zeros, one probable to 47th sentai)
1 B-25 confirmed shot down by Lt Inoue

Unit stands at 35 planes available, 36 pilots.

Bipographers note : the tojo lost appeared to be piloted by a WO Iwaya – the second rookie pilot by that name lost on his first combat mission.

One of the things that has to be realized about the efforts of 47th sentai –is the sheer physical effects of flying a fighter in close combat has on the pilot themselves.
In this modern age literally thousands upon thousands of people are right now sitting comfortably in their studies, cubbies, lounge rooms, flying highly realistic simulations of air to air combat.
Im sure some are even flying the 47th.
Some of these guys (few gals I suppose) spend considerable effort learning the tactics, studying their aircrafts characteristics. Many have literally 10’s of thousands of hours of “stick time” I’m sure.
Many, many , probably consider themselves far more skilled than the real thing.

Its all crap of course.

Our men don’t sit comfortably in some seat, sometimes leaning to the left, or the right – smoothly flying a rock steady machine., can of coke close at hand.
Their world is a violent, vibrating roller coaster ride of a world – where soft bodies are flung from side to side with each maneuver –where heads frequently slam into cockpit canopies, and bums are crushed into hard leather and steel excuses for seats.
It’s a world of struggling for breath, of intense muscle straining effort, a world of assaulting noise, and for every moment of battle –the tension of imminent threatened death.
Our men do not fly into combat, and return unaffected –they return battered, bruised –some will actually break ribs against their seat straps during combat.

This is their world.
Add disease, hunger, thirst, and injury. Pile on terror, grief, rage –and doubt
This is the world of the cockpit

And the damage is accumulative.

Today the bombers come again –23 in total, and again very, very high.
It’s a strange fight today , more akin to two football teams in a end of season game, where both are assured of entering the finals.
Our fighters struggle to intercept – streaming up and behind the bombers –and some attacks simply are not pressed –there is a lot of ammunition expended –but most at great range –from both sides.

The bombers bomb basically blind –and miss Dilli by nearly five miles

Regretfully for the bombers, one must have suffered some sort of failure on the way home – Nakamura awards its destruction to one of the newer WO’s –it really could be awarded to anyone .

He makes no comment to the men on fighting spirit that evening –the harbor is going to be filled with ships tomorrow.
Sore bodies or not –that will be motivation enough

20/1/43

The crump!, crump!, crump ! of heavy explosions deep in the heart of the harbour announce the convoys arrival.
The men can see the action clearly enough -4 sleek destroyers churning the waters in the early dawn light –the gigantic water spouts of the charges.
“That’s the Hibiki” notes Juni –peering intently through his glasses.
“Oh yes –how do you know of her?” asks Miyazaki
‘Our Father mentioned her–she has quite a reputation”
The show goes on for quite some time –and apparently drives the enemy Submarine of – and soon the convoy –6 very large transports anchor, and begin to immediately unload.
The men take the briefing intently – the enemy must come for this target –and the details for todays defence of it are extensive.
Iwaya’s angel –(the reputed Minister of production) is busy transforming Dilli now –another base to benefit from 47th’s presence.
It now has a good oxygen store –a parachute section, a weather officer, a medical officer, a new intelligence cell –and a new base officer. ADM Shiama boards the Hibiki for return to Japan, a Captain Hioki takes his place –a small bustling man –a former book keeper –thus absolutely perfect for the job in Nakamura’s eyes.

Midday finds 20 plus Tigers at 34000 feet –waiting.
And waiting, and waiting.
The men freeze –and no body likes how the planes handle at this altitude.
With just 5 minutes of patrol time left to go, 85th sentai enroute from lautern to releive, the bombers finally decide to make their appearance.

Today they obviously have more to lose than the 47th – there are just a dozen Liberators today –and even as Nakamura leads the flights into attack position above them –3 ditch bombs, turn abruptly, break for home.

47th dive – there is no fuel for fancy stuff –nor time –home is directly below.
It’s a near vertical dive – a frightening quick closing of fighter to bomber – they swoop down and through the formation – all guns pounding

The bombers fire back –a frantic hosing of the sky – and then its all over –the fighters continue down, spiraling, the bombers drop their load – and miss again –and its all over.

Sometimes it goes like that.
Another day at work.
Probably only Hyakutake gets anything out of it –he spins all the way down from the battle to the deck . If you like doing them –why not?

The convoy is still there.

Many, many years agao Hyakutake can remember the bee hive in the old tree at the back of Grandmothers home.
He used to dare himself to see how close he could get to the buzzing centre -usually not that close! - but no matter how many times he got stung, the damn thing had drawn him like a magnet.
In a perverse way, Dilli reminds him of that hive today -buzzing, ugly, and dangerous.
Every Tojo fighter that is in the entire theatre is on patrol today -stacked at 7000, 15000, 20000 and 30000 feet.
Darwin has been a hive of radio traffic - and today the intelligence is good.

47th don't really get a chance -a mere 8 heavies appraoch dilli -and the swarm attacks -Hyakutake finds himself literally lining up to get a turn -2 of the bombers appear to go down before they turn and dive for home -a fruitless and damaging exercise.

Ironically the successful defence by Japans elite fighters is not the major celebration today - the allies have sent a convoy through from derby -and the dive bombers at Koepang -the new model 13's -have had a field day.
But its the seaplane pilots -flying elderly biplanes from the bay -that are wild with excitement -they too have hit the convoy -with no loss.

Morale is good.
The men are getting tired -but a sense of strength, of great confidence is growing. If this is the best the allies have -how soon until they sue for peace?

Midday
Dilli field

Our six men -Hyakautake, Inoue, Juni, Iwaya,Miyazaki and Nakamura are gathered under the wing of Nakamura's fighter.
Around him the field is a hive of activitity -CAP is rotating -planes are being frantically fuelled, others re armed.
Waingapu has been hammered -and again the radio intelligence warns of imminent attack.
5 days of continous operations are taking there toll -not a face is with out fatigue, dark shadows under eyes -and sweat shines brightly on all brows.
47th is fully 30% down on available fighters -and with so much effort required over the frieghters -other bases are now feeling the pain

Nakamura's voice is terse " I need a reserve -I must have a reserve. Miyazaki - four men only this patrol - Hyakutake -3 only -and has anyone heard on Izumida yet?"
Juni spits agressively into the dust _ "Three pieces in the right fore arm -he hurts -But he can fly if we need him'

Nakamura contemplates the field "Damn -" For a moment he hesitates. Stuff it, these men need to know -we are in this together "look guys - we can't keep all the other units covering our tails forever -but we need whats left in those fat barsted holds badly . I think they are as tired as we are ................"

He does not get a chance to finish the sentence

Emerging from the brown background of the mountains a shape rapidly grows -a low cut wing, twin engines -stubby twin tails.

The Hudson blasts straight down the length of the strip -close enough to see that the co pilot has bright, bright red hair.

It roars past -a dozen feet above the deck -if that -and continues on across the bay, banking hard left, then right betwen the transports -and on into the sea mist and safety.

Inoue whistles once -deep and long in admiration
"I suppose if you really want to see whats going on -thats the way to do it"

"Crap" thinks Nakamura.'tomorrow could be really busy"

SMN Miyazaki dabs unethusiastically with his paint brush.
It must truly be the hundreth time that he has painted this bloody great gun , he thinks -do they think it will help the armour?
This particular seamans delight in joining the Yamato has long, long waned into the dreary routine of Japanese ship board life.
In short -hard work, hard abuse, more hard work, and yet more abuse.
Even the excitement of helping fire the great guns has turned into a nightmare -now he dreads the drill - hour upon hour of drilling, drilling, and drilling -all the time trying to snatch some meaningless second over the other turrets.
It sucked.
Big time

He allows himself another quick look at the familiar bay the mighty ship lay anchored in.
How long were they going to stay here for heavens sake? -and why, Oh why -here?
Seaman Miyazaki must truly be browned of today - not even the sight of five battle wagons in a row can stir his patriotic heart today.
Smn Miyazaki is un happy. but he is young I suppose. Eventually he will learn the Militaries greatest lesson - hurry up -and wait.

The grinding pace continues.
Today the bombers do not come - the hudson recons do -and the transports remain still anchored -sitting ducks, as the painfully slow unloading continues.

Continous CAP.

What innocent words for such a crushing routine.
men rising at dawn -hurried meals, the briefings -then into the air -and the grinding boredom/sheer intensity of the patrol.

Boredom at the never changing scenery -intensity of looking, looking, looking for the bombers, for the fighters all expect must soon come.
Then the drama of getting down onto the crowded strip -puling up -feeding ones self -attending to the things that must be done -then, back into the air again.

The pounding of engines continues all day long, as the sun burns down , the dust settles on everything -and as 47th slowly, but steadily, grinds itself into exhaustion.

And from the lowliest mechanic, to Nakamura himself - all ask the same question -'How much longer will those hated transports take?'

Inoue awakes
For a few moments he stares in the half light at the stained canvas overhead –wishing he was back asleep, dreaming of his wife. Her smile still remains clear even as the dream fades.

Outside he can hear the dawn approaching –the sounds are unmistakable –the coughing from the tent next door –the splash of water from behind the tent at the communal –the chatter from over at the mess area.

And behind all that, the sounds from the revments as fighters are pushed about –the hollow bang of aluminium wings, the crunch of wheels on gravel, the scuffle of feet.
Any moment now the quiet will be shattered by the first engine being coaxed into life –and he will have to face the day.

Another day.
God he aches –every muscle protesting.
‘getting too bloody old for this my friend, too bloody old’
Duty drives him from his bed –too many years of routine, too many years of discipline –he could not have remained in the tent even if that was an option –not that the soon to develop heat would have let him.

He dresses quickly –notes with disgust that the toe in one boot is soon to fail.
The dawn light is still cool –and the meal is ready.
He eats in silence –thinking of home. Who knows what today will bring. Let it come

Juni too awakes at the dawn light.
He feels nothing really –a creeping numbness perhaps.
Another day
The bottle of Amber liquid is only 1/3 full –and he eyes it with curiosity –wasn’t it full last night?
Never mind.
He draws deeply at it –and discards the empty bottle quietly .
Another day
Now he can face it.

Iwaya stares morosely at the small bowl in front of him. Some rice –some fish –something green. Simple fare –but simply not enough of it.

But he won’t say anything –he knows that as a pilot he is getting more than anyone.
Another day
Please God –let me shoot some thing down today.
He stirs his small meal. How can he eat it –until he has earned it?

Miyazaki sits crossed legged at the edge of the strip –eyes closed –meditating, waiting for the briefing.
In his minds eye –he strikes a heroic pose.
In reality, he is a lone figure lost in the great bustle of a combat field readying for battle.

In his mind he manoeuvres –and shoots down 1, 2, 3, 5 enemy planes
He will be Bushido
It will be another day. No –today, today will be His day.

Hyakutake stares morosely at the engine of his plane. He doesn’t really understand it –only that it is really down on revs.
Feeling quite lost and useless he watches the three skinny mechanics screw at mysterious pieces of machinery.
Another day
Full of anxiety Hyakutake watches the repairs to his plane.
Another day –he does not want to miss it.

Today is simply a merging of yesterday for Nakamura – this dawn is the second he has seen with out sleep.
Radio reception last night was terrible –co ordinating today a nightmare.
Too many demands
Too little time.
God –he needed a staff.
Another day
If the enemy do come –should he fly?

The sun begins to warm the dusty earth.
And in each individual way of their own, the men of 47th begin to prepare to meet the enemy again.

Another day.

Never underestimate your enemy.

Today the Americans show that they not only have great courage, but daring and skill to match.

Again the day is long, hot, and exhausting, again Nakamura manages to keep a CAP of nearly 60 fighters over Dilli –all of them stacked neatly to the south –waiting for the bombers should they come.

And come they do – from the North.

Inoue is leading his flight into the field, literally on the down wind leg, heading north across the bay, across the top of the transports –flaps down, cart down –every bloody thing down –when the he spots the three bombers –coming in low, and fast across the ocean, already down below his left wing.

Later it will be realized that they must have passed North of Koepang, headed towards Kendari –turned south –and swooped in.
A brave attack, a cunning attack.

It all happens far too fast

“Crap!”
Impressions of other fighters –the 70th, the 85’s trying to dive in, but too, too late, too late.
Inoue Jams the throttle forward – and it responds with its great bellow –and he almost frantically attempts to bank in towards the bombers, get the flaps up, -no time for the gear!
The bombers flash past his left shoulder , his fighter rolling so drunkenly with the gear down, too slow!,too slow! –the great eggs already streaming down –Come ON!, COME ON! Move you son of a ……….
Inuzuka wheeling left too,
Where the #@$%^& Uchida!

Impressions –great towering waterspouts – huge –avoid!, Avoid! –streaming Flack from startled gunners on the ships below, streaming tracer from the bombers – the whirling pale blue ocean so dangerously close below and the slamming CRASH!,CRASH! Of impact somewhere behind him.

His fighter abruptly crabs sideways – and a rush of pure fear streams through him as the controls seemingly rebel –I’ve lost it, I’ve lost it! –no –he’s got it, he’s got the bitch –get her down, get her down –and the crazy, crazy thought –shot down by a bomber right in front of everyone –how will he live it down!

Pancake –steady, steady –and CRUMP, crump –he is down, struggling to steer the beast as he careers down the strip –he has came so damn close to stalling -so damn close to killing himself……….

Juni and his wingman blast overhead –hard on the retreating bombers tails - -of all the fighters Juni alone will hit them –Izumida will also be heavily damaged.

Inoue kills the engine
Blessed silence.
He painfully un does his straps –OH Crap – the pain in the bottom of his back
Gingerly he climbs out – meets some of the crash crews.
He is alright –bruised –relieved, almost shocked? –maybe, maybe yes he is.

3 shells have hit his fighter – and the fragility of his machine is laid bare.
One has literally torn the right flap off at its roots –its gone –Kaput!
The second leaves a hole the size of a fist a mere 3 inches to the rear of the canopy

3/4 ‘s of the rudder is gone…………….

How the hell did he get down?

That night they all get drunk
(Again)
The toast-
“To our cunning, Brave American friends!”

That night, having pressed their luck enough, the transports and escorts up anchor, and finally, finally steal away into the night.

Nakamura stands on the beach. –listening to his men celebrate the success of the defense
Tonight, finally, he might sleep..
