The enemy do not come today.
Reduced CAP is flown, 85th sentai depart -they leave with sore heads -and with the reduced work load the backlog of maintenance tasks for 47th fighters is seriously dented.

Our men try to relax, try to sleep.
Letters are written, laundry attended to - domestics.
Boring crud -but the backbone of a units morale.

Behind the scenes though - (and only Nakamura has a vague appreciation of them) equally important missions have been steadily flying out from Dilli, Koepang and Lautern.
Recon flights -equally brave men in the great Emilies, the fragile Alfs, the nimble specialist recon craft -and they are now reporting much to ponder.

Broome is filled with shipping -numbers vary -15 ships today -30 plus (and a battleship?) yesterday. Darwin is a hornets nest.
All those heavy bombers.
The British CVs, the CVL of last month.

Nakamura reads the reports.
47th's "rest" may not be for long............

Evening -another quiet day, the enemy again refrain from attacking.

Man has the ability to recover from the deepest of stress, the deepest pits of exhaustion.
Only 3 days ago the men of 47th seemed to be in the fight of their lives -now, after a good nights sleep, a better than usual meal -and the simple ability to stop -and relax, has again restored the unit.
Now minds turn to far more important matters
"Do you think we will ever see home again?' wonders Iwaya -as the bottle goes round
"It would be snowing I think too" remarks Nakamura -"And if i was home my wife would be at me again over the roof"
The men smile
‘Weren’t you married once Inoue?’ Miyazaki asks, and Inoues smile vanishes.
But he cannot hold the question against the new Flight leader –how is he to know?
“Once yes –many, many years ago”. He manages a smile –“ She too liked to prattle on about the snow” –Oh dear Wife –yes –how beautiful it was, especially on our wedding day.
For a small while silence is shared by the men
The bottle does another round

And all minds dwell on home.

27th to the 29th of the first 43

You know when a thunderstorm is brewing.
The frowing humidity -the stillness.
The closeness of the air
You can feel the tension in the air -its brewing -and you know when its arrives, it will be violent.

For three days now, this has been dilli field - the war has gone eerily quiet -it remains almost unspoken -but all feel it.

Its the great breath before the dive
But just where will it break.
Hyakutake has a good view of the days just gone by:
"Iwaya my friend -think of it this way -every day it remains quiet is another day we live"

This suits Iwaya admirably.

120 miles North of Siapan

For seaman Agarshi and Shimto, this was the penultimate moment, the moment when nearly 48 hours of intense work either paid off, or went to crap.
The Ryujo had left Japan at the rush, with many jobs still not completed. This is one, and our two men had spent the entire time since sailing here on the wildly vibrating, shaking, hammering quarter deck, struggling with the gearbox of a particularly reluctant capstan..
Now the work is almost done. All that really has to happen is to lift the gearbox’s 20 odd kilos up and into its casing –align it to the shaft –get the spline inline –get the key in place –and get the whole assembly nicely nested.
.
Easier said than done.

The quarter deck is incredibly noisy – directly below them the carriers screws are pushing the ship almost as hard as they can – shaking a million metal fittings into a crashing discordant symphony. The wind is whipping through under the flight deck, and the sea is hissing heavily nearby, if not at times even invading the deck they work on.

Shinto nods to Agarshi –and together they lift – if they drop something now………..
The timing is immaculate –if you are a gremlin. Over the wind and crashing vibration comes the faint sound of alarms –General quarters!
They grimace –they have crossed the Rubicon –the gearbox has to go in now before they can respond – 20 kilos hangs precariously over the shaft.
“Crap”
“#$%^%$ crap”
Ryujo abruptly lurches into a hard, hard turn to starboard – the quarterdeck begins to lean, lean, lean –the great rudder shakes everything into a mad dance about them.
Spray, water –more spray.
The men can only grimace, and hang on –toes curling for grip , legs locking against the mad roll of the ship.

Like rocks they stand, waiting for the gyrations to end.
What ever happens –they cannot move, a desperate balancing act against gravity, vibration, and 20 kilos of metal determined to try and throw itself over the side.
A tool back rolls away, disappears over the side.
@!#$%!!!!

A destroyer magically races into view, slashing past Ryujos Stern –its bow wave bright and curling –sparkling against the grey sea –she too is turning hard, hard, hard –and little black drums abruptly rush off her stern.

Submarine attack

Even from here the two engineers feel the crack of the charges through the ocean –the gigantic drum beat against their ships side.
“Barsteds!”

Ryujo straightens out –levels off.
Submarine attack or not –the men take advantage.
The gearbox goes in –and a blur of fingers gets the bolts on.

Admiral Yamaguchi curses the discovery of his carriers .
Our engineers curse the loss of a tool bag
One wonders –which was the greatest disaster?

The growing feeling of menace increases at Dilli

Nakamura gathers the men around him -it is again the usual morning brief.
The air is cool this morning - a solid breeze has started blowing -welcome indeed.Nakamura's face seems even more care worn and creased today -despite the lack of action, 47th's leader seems to be aging almost visibly in front of them.

He does not try to hide the facts, bury the news under flowery language.
"Koepang has been smashed -and many planes have been destroyed."

The men greet this news with silence - Iwaya wonders -'just what does smashed mean?'
but no more details are forthcoming.
'Its partly my fault men -I have requested our friends the 85th, the 87th here to help -that left Koepang open Im afraid"
Many feet shuffle in the dust -and many eyes look anywhere else but at Nakamura.
What is happening is inconcievable -a leader admitting a mistake in the Imperial forces.
How to process this?
But Nakamura keeps on looking them in the eye
"My men -hard times are ahead -I feel it. Only Honesty will hold us together. If I am to lead -then you must trust me -good or bad.
A convoy is due -a very important one. Koepang will recover. Why? because we will make the enemy bleed here again.
The enemy has not come -but he can't just let us pack here with troops.
He will come."
His eyes, for so long now tired and aged -surge with a deep, deep fire
"And we will kill him"

There is anger and passion here.
Yes.
They will kill him

The calls go out in the quiet, cool dawn light

BANZAI!
BANZIA!
BANZIA!

Our men are gathered at the door of a newly constructed hut -the new mess.
Another simple structure, simple wooden frames, palm branches, a rough tin roof though.
And finished just in time.
"Poor barsteds" notes Hyakutake -"a long sea voyage -then when they get here -they get this"

This is a solid rainstorm -its been pouring since dawn -and it looks like it will be for the entire day.
The Column of soldiers struggling ashore from the 2 transports (hidden somewhere in the grey shadows of this pouring rain) are a pitiful looking lot - wet through, bedraggled.
Looking exactly like men who have lived miserably for 2 weks or so -and will now be expected to move into new -even more miserable quarters.

Iwaya looks around him -at the fairly dry quarters they are crowded into.
Another glance at the growing swamps of water outside.
"Thats why I joined this outfit - if you're going to fight a war -might as well be comfortable about it"
They grin.
"Truck it" exclaims Juni . Then quite unexpectantly " Who's for a game of cards? -lets see if the 87th guys have any money we can win"
He organises, suddenly enthusiastic -"Inoue -got any of that hidden crap left to drink?"
Inoue smiles . "Nice to have you back my friend -I think we might have somewhere, -deal me in"

The men will soon settle in -it will rain all day -and although the allies will bomb all around the Empires perimeter -here the day will pass slowly and quietly.

The Commander of the new troops is a tiger.
The new soldiers are fed quickly -quartered -and then put immediately to work.

Besides more troops, the convoy (rushed directly from Japan at the instigation of the highest authorities ) has bought the most valuable thing of all

Mail

Hyakutake receives a wonderful package from his sister –it has extremely useful items – socks, toothpaste, a sewing kit –and letters .

Iwaya too gets a letter

“My Son,
I have been following your actions with increasing pride. Despite all that has gone before between us – I can only view you as any Father can –as my cherished son.

I must speak plainly to you –and you must not reveal this letter to anyone.

As Minister for production, I have from time to time been able to provide your group with certain “things”.
I regret I am finding it increasingly difficult to do this with discretion –Japan is so stretched at the moment that casually moving “a few items” is getting impossible –such is the demand placed on me.
The Americans refuse to sue for peace –and , well frankly –I do not see anyone here in the cabinet who has a clue how to end this war.

Things can only get harder from here on.
Thus the point of this letter.
Here at home I have been busily squirreling away a little nest egg for us –for when times get bad.
Should the war go badly –I intend that we both will not be too badly affected.
But that benefits us little if you get killed on some far away speck of land.

Son –I have arranged with the Captain of the ship bringing this mail. A simple signal from his transmitter –and you can be posted to his ship today –and be home safe in a month –where I can quietly place you into a good position safe for the rest of the war .

Please consider this my Son. I know we parted poorly –let this be my amends.
You and 47th have honour enough as warriors –come home –make an old man happy

Your Father

IWAYA –Minister of production

Iwaya reads the letter twice.
He looks around.
Hyakutake is showing everyone photos of his sisters new puppy. He is smiling –cheerful.
Inoue sits crossed legged with Juni – they are deep into fighter tactics –stick planes in intense combat
Miyazaki is reading
All of 47th are around him – living, working. The fighters lined up –ready for work too.
Family.
And not one with out honour.

Quietly Iwaya screws the letter up –tosses it into the drain where the dirty water rushes it away.

Nakamura is calling for the daily brief. Eagerly Iwaya climbs to his feet –ready for another day.

It rains all of the 2nd of the month -a blessing.
47th is braced for the massed attacks expected -but so far little is happening.

Dilli remains calm, the war might be going on elswhere -but who is to know?

The men are debriefing.
Hot, sweaty, tired, cramped
They gather around the entrance to the mess, some stories are being exchanged, but mostly the men are quiet -the evening meal foremost in their minds.
The field has settled into twilight - the planes mere glimmers of silver in the gathering dusk.

Morale is good -the enemy have not come again -and the troops are safely ashore.

Our group are gathered at one end of the porch - sitting on their mats, cross legged, bowls of rice steadily being reduced.
Its simply too hot in the hut still, here in the cool is a good place to eat.

Suddenly guns at the fields end bark - the AA guns!
Heads rise in anticipation -all eyes following the tracer........

Bomber!
Curses, shouts. A stumbling run, a dive into the slit trench.
The roar of the multi engined beast roaring across the field at tree top hieght -more a impression of a shadow than a shape, the suddenn CRUMP!,CRUMP!,CRUMP! KABANG! of a bomb impacting one of the transports, the hammering of more guns, the rapidly receeding Liberator escaping into the dark..............

A long sudden silence

And Iwaya -heard all over the field

"TRUK! -dropped my #$%^&^% dinner!"

like many days in any war - nothing happens.

5/2/43

"Again?" Inoue is incredulous 'We are re deploying again?"
"I'm afraid so" Nakamura smiles " The powers to be seem to have a knack of waiting until we are comfortable it seems -then they will move us"
Inoue looks around at the rough hut they fantacise is a true mess ""Don't tell, let me guess -"Tokyo perhaps?, or Hiroshima ? -surely not somewhere as comfortable as this!"
'Stop complaining my friend -I'm sure the high command thinks its necessary -after all..."
"Yes I know - we who are about to and all that sh#t"

Nakamura does not know -again -the ultimate destination for 47th -but the call is urgent.
By days end they are ready - the Commander of the 85th sentai takes Dilli into his charge, and once again 47th 'pack their crap', and as the sun begins to set, they depart for the first leg - a short hop to Amboina.

The flight is not hasle free -once again the fickle fates intervene -what the enemy cannot do -poor navigation, engine failure, weather? -who knows -takes down one of the planes.
Yet another nameless man falls for the empire............

Another journey of attrition begins............

After the usual once a year herbies computer melts -a turn is played -and hopefully cantona has it!

6/12/43

47th sentai today make another move -from one jungle strip, to another.
Inoue is left behind -the usual operational troubles seem to strike no matter how short"the hops"

The war seems far away -again its the dawn rising -and the loneliness and splendour of a single cockpit in the blue, blue sky.
Nakamura is simply pleased not to lose anyone.............

47th sentai rest today, waiting for Inoue to catch up -waiting for high Command to decide where to send them.
Darkness has fallen -and although the night is still warm, the men gather close around the large camp fire.

It is not the only one here at this field - dotted around it many small fires are trying to hold back the dark.

And dark the night is -the jungle presses in around them all -an inpenetrable wall of black - and not a silent one. The Japanese air force may be in control of this thousand or so yards of dirt -after dark mother nature controls the rest.
The men talk -mostly of home, of the end of the war .
Regretfully, there is little to drink, and what there is, is being saved - one just doesn't know where they will end up after this move.
With little entertainment on offer, the men soon disperse -most to bunk down under wings, or in what ever cover they can find -this field is so new not a single building has yet been completed.
Miyasaki however -has bought a small tent -aquired God knows where.

He refuses to share it.................

Hyakutake and Iwaya note carefully -confer -and with considerable effort -go hunting.

Miyasaki awakens on dawn -the light that dull whiteness that the canvas allows -his back sore from the hard ground.
But he is dry -unlike his ill prepared companions probably are..................

He freezes, and his veins run cold.
Barely a foot above him -horror hangs.

We will never know the species of spiders Hyakutake and Iwaya carefully released into the warm confines of the tent -but you can rest ssured that they were big -very, very big.
The spiders do not survive (we guess) but the memory of the scream of terror from our Bushido warriors tent will survive in 47th sentai lore for many years -that and the explosion of a tent pysically rising from the ground.............

"Bounced" notes Iwaya contentedly
"And bounced badly" grins Hyakutake.............

8/2/43

It rains on and off all day.
Nakamura radios ahead -the next airfield is being heavily assualted by nature -thunderstorms a plenty
The unit spends another quiet day waiting.

Around noon several transports arrive -follow up flights from Dilli
One brings mail.

To Hyakutake's astonishment, he has a letter from his Father. he has sent many , but never expected to recieve one in return.
His friends gather around as he reads it aloud -all mail is considered communal nowdays -so hungry for news they have become.

"My son -greetings from Burma.
It may surprise you that I think i saw you some months ago -well your plane at any rate.
Service here is very easy at the moment -the enemy here is very quiet -and even the bombers are tolerable -I think you fly boys have scared them!
I cannot tell you where I am of course - but the ocean is nearby -that should help you.

I am well -we are still well supplied, dug in deep -and i fear little -except the bloody mosquitos!
As always, i remain proud of you -remember your duty to the empire -

Your father

9/2/43

The men rise early -its a big day ahead.
Well before dawn the stink of aviation fuel fills the air - it will take a considerable effort to manually refuel nearly 70 plus fighters today -and every one is well and truly sweat soaked by its completion.
Midday, and Nakamura leads the 2 sentais to the next objective -only a short flight.
Nevertheless one plane is damaged on arrival -only a flat tyre -yet still a right pain in the arse when one is at yet another small deserted field.

Nakamura's comment "This moving sucks"
Iwaya's "Crap -Ive lost another toothbrush"
Hyakutakes' -" tomorrow -the enemy"

The war is deadly quiet -all sense that soon the easy days will end...........

"there's a lot more holes" notes Iwaya, looking around at the latest field.
""But the bunkers are deeper too" Hyakutake remarks
"They may need to be, from what I hear"

"back to work then" Iwaya kicks a piece of wreckage away
Hyakutake grins "Yep -back to work"

47th is back at the front - and back in the war.

Dawn
And once again pilots of 47th sentai spend the day on Combat air patrol -awaiting an enemy that does not come.
There presence however-has been quickly discovered by the enemy -the Catalina flying boat has skillfully reconned the base -counted the fighters, and departed safely.

Once again Lae is the home of our men.

In the time away the base has been transformed -from a small isolated outpost to now something entirely else.
Lae is now home of 8th army HQ -and from here LGEN Akiyama intends to defend PNG to the death.
lae is now a sprawling complex of bunkers, supply dumps, and even more bunkers. The war against the palm tree is all but over -their trunks are everywhere-embeded in bunker walls, lining the trenches, strengthening the aircraft pens.
47th view their new quarters with satisfaction -then even with confidence -only last week their new bunker was struck directly by a 500lb bomb -and nary a trace of the blow can be seen.

'"A nice hole for such valuable contents" Nakamura jokes -"but the rent will be steep"

That evening a small dinner is held by Akiyama -all the various commanders attend.
The dinner is simple, but plentiful -and the mood is good.
Nakamura views the guests over the rim of his glass - his fellow sentai leaders -all good
The navy pilot -also good.
The army men - well, maybe not so good. But then again, if lae is going to depend on the small numbers of SNLF troops they command -then they truly would be up $%^&# creek.
No - they would have to be the shield -the sword.
Were they good enough?

he drinks -the alchol warming him deeply

By the Gods -yes. yes -yes they would be.
he was sure of it!

A messanger enters - the signal urgent
LGEN Akiyama smiles
"things are warming up gentlemen -enemy carrier reported Lunganville"

Juni enters circuit yet again.
It does not matter how many landings you have done, how many hours you have flown, you only get one chance if you really cock it up.
And Lae is still not an easy field to get into – the approach over the bay can be very, very deceiving – height can be hard to judge.

Downwind leg –FUST –Flaps, set, Undercart –yes, down and locked.
Speed –The KI 44 is simply a barsted to land due to its high speed –but Juni barely notices it now –he Trims his fighter –and picks his landing point.

It’s the traffic that worries him –there is simply fighters everywhere –and he really does not wish to meet some of the rookies up here un expectantly!
2000 feet, moving over the bay………..speed 90 knots, wind, wind? – the sock is limp –damn –another hot approach.
Bank over, cross leg, intently looking over the left shoulder now –judging, judging the touch down point, sliding across, sliding across……….
Clipped swift, confident and positive, stick rudder –touch less throttle – lined up………

He spots it then –and Juni’s Navy background probably helps –he knows THAT shadow – a submarine in the bay!
Throttle forward –gear up!
Hard around – hard around –barsted! –it is a Submarine –and there is the feather of the scope!

For a second Juni has to think hard –attack? –how? –can he hit it?

The scope goes down – and that option is gone.
But Juni’s problem is already being solved – to his right other keen eyes also have seen the shadow –eyes specifically sent to guard the two rusty hulks anchored in the bay.
The Helen is a land bomber –but this one has spent many months on anti submarine patrol –and it knows its job
Juni watches with some admiration as the attack goes in –the eggs go down – the great white towers of ocean crash up wards……and the dull orange of a strike briefly flashes.
Juni clenches a fist –yes –sink you dog, sink.

But there are tears in his eyes as the oil begins to stain the surface………………

extract from Shattering the sword - a Cantona production.

.............and this about completed Allied plans.
For Japan, the tension continued to ratchet up - and could the "sightings" be trusted?
High command conferences on the Yamato on the tenth were simply acrimonius -to put it mildly.
Far too much fuel, far too many miles had been expended in the last months"chasing damn shadows" - Nagumo refused to chase any more.
Yamato differed.
And as he held the cards of command , the fleet would again sail.
And thus the stage was set.
The allies -calmly planning the year ahead - specific plans for specific objectives.
And Yamato -gambling all again...............

The sun is once again beating down -and once again our pilots seek shelter under the wings of their craft.
47th sentai is on immediate scramble alert - the morning inteligence report from Rabual has contained electrifying news - a carrier and escorts -size, type unknown, are south of Ndeni.
It is another classic day of war -hurry up and wait.

Its just after lunch -and some privates bring the containers of hot rice out to the men today -it is plain today -with little added to it.
But it is good rice today -hot, and sticky.
"I wonder Miyasaki " Iwaya pauses in his shovelling " if you have ever considered rice as a weapon of war?"
"Eh?"
"Well you are so confident that Bushido can win this war - but have you ever considered this rice?"
Miyasaki considers Iwaya carefully. His eyes dart about the group -"is this a trick question?." his eyes narrow. "You had better not be trying something my friend"
Inoue enters the conversation, his voice quite serious and grave " How many men on the base you think ?"
Miyasaki considers this for a moment -he has no idea what this is about -but............ "3, 4 thousand?"
Hyakutake grins "15000 all up based at Lae -15000 hungry bellies"
"And?"
"Thats seven tons of rice per meal -at least".
"Which is why I am always hungry" interjects Iwaya
"ten tons wouldnt feed you you idiot" Inoue counters.
'I concede the point"
"Anyway" Hyakutake struggles to get back to the point " thats a lot of rice -per day. Then there is the petrol -what -3000 gallons per day?"

Miyasaki seems to struggle with the conversation at hand "And the point is?"
"Beans and bullets my friend" Iwaya stares at his now empty bowl "beans and bullets." he glances at the sky. "I wish the barsteds would come, this waiting is killing me"

Miyasaki does not get it.
His companions do
As does high command .
It will take more than Bushido against the tidal wave of bullets and beans the allies must surely have ready now to the south of 47th sentai.

Japanese bombers strike at Thursday island today -something our men are oblivious too, and would have remained of, but for the arrival of a heavily damaged KI-43 just after noon.
The fighter first appears low over the hills, trailing a steady stream of smoke and oil -immediately obvious to all that it is in distress.
You can only watch, helpless, but also right in the cockpit with the poor sap struggling with the controls - and you will the cripple into the approach -hold your breath as it flares -and wince as it bounces, bounces, and slings around in a sickening ground loop -dust and metal flying.

Many hands reach the pilot, and drag him clear - he is pale -but unharmed.
His plane is not -another wreck to be scavenged, then pushed ruthlessly clear of the strip to rot in the jungle.

WO Senda smiles however as he spots Inoue -"well Ill be damned - another China old fart!
Inoue is genuinely happy to see him. "Wondered how long it would take to get a shirker like you to the front!"
Senda laughs "says the man who never kept a duty in his life." they shake hands, warmly, embrace. Senda views Inoue carefully "You're going grey. Now where is lunch?'"

Wo Senda is a jovial man (with an appetite to match Iwaya's) and he has many tales to tell. but the news of "my latest adventure" really grabs their interest.

" escorting those big 4 engine slugs we call a heavy bomber - looking for trouble really. Found it -iron dogs -those barsteds of the 333rd -usual furball. Just managed to hammer one of the dogs -new fighter cuts across my bows. Senda goes after him - lines him up nicely -a new fighter my friends -great big buggar of a plane -unmistakable -great gull like wings."
he draws them in the dust on the table they are sitting around "Ugly bitch of a thing -anyway, Senda has him lined up -gives him a burst -misses"
A collective woa from his audience
"but then the worry gentlemen -he simply throttled away -left me for dead -ugly plane -but by heaven it could move!"
"And then?'
"Ah, then Senda lets some one get on his tail - and well you saw the rest"

The afternoon goes pleasantly - eventually Senda will return to his own base on one of the daily transport flights -a promise of "Ill see if i can swing a posting hey Inoue -I need another old fart to look out for".

The day passes quietly -the enemy carriers have vanished.
Few give much thought to the new enemy fighter................

VADM Moizumi works his staff hard during the night, and by 4 am “its on”
At 0500 precisely all 27 zeros from Lae depart – the jungle reverberating to the imperfect beat of their engines.
For once everything works well, and at 0530 they rendezvous with aircraft from Wewak, Madang and Dobodura , 74 fighters, AM2’s, AM3’s and KI43s escort 38 bombers to Thursday island –looking for trouble.

Our men watch them with envy –the 44 has too short a range for this sort of work – and our men are condemned to another day of waiting – and waiting.

The field is very quiet –baking in the heat. How are they doing? Will some fail to return? What if they don’t?
But it goes well – on time the fighters return –anxious eyes count – 27 out – 27 back –although one may never fly again –pan caking on return –hydraulics gone.

The navy pilots are jubilant –13 enemy fighters are claimed in total for the mission – including 8 of the 333rd planes - bounced and destroyed still climbing from the field.

Morale soars

That evening Nakamura calls all the pilots to the ready room.
The hut is full to bursting –laughter filled, jovial.
His briefing is to the point.
“Score one for us today. There can be but one reaction from the enemy –hit here as hard as he can tomorrow.
The plan therefore is this……………….”

Below, way way below –the shining blue of the coral sea.
Behind –the dark green of PNG
Below the left wingtip –sliding away, the black slash of Port Moresby
Above -the brilliant sun.
And Iwaya –upright and alert – climbing, climbing ever higher with his companions, Juni to the left, Hyakutake to the right.

Eyes are straining, straining – looking hard.
Come on, come on –where the truk are you?

Small dots – growing., circling. Fighters. Still above –familiar shapes.
Iwaya eases the throttle – climb complete –swings gently towards the fighters circling.
The air is smooth up here – smooth, smooth –and Oh so cold
Miyazaki and Inoue wave – relieved from the patrol. They waggle wings –and peel away for home……….

CAP patrol at 27000 feet.
Noise
Vibration
Cold
Boredom
A eye on the fuel gauge – and a ceaseless scan of the sky – 3 fighters , tiny diamonds of reflection suspended under the endless blue.

But they are not alone – even further to the west –85th sentai –and to the east –closer to Lae –the Ki 45s await.

The radio crackles.
“Vapour trails”
yes –there they are –arrows pointed straight at them – and , buggar it – well above - -
“You’d think they’d have learnt by now they can’t hit squat from up there”
“You think?”
“Well…”
“Cut the chatter.. Nakamura here. Attack!”

Iwaya takes a big breathe. Settles into his seat again. Fights the fear. Shoves the throttle to the wall, and begins the climb again.

The great white arrows are still over his left shoulder –they are cutting ahead of them, climbing above them – now the arrows have heads –little dots –so many little dots –
“I count 60”
Other little dots –glints of lights flashing through –85th Sentai attacking.

As usual, once it begins –it happens far too fast.
Wing over, steep, steep turn –diving, diving –head on attack –the bombers –dots, shapes, wings, cockpits –the crash of guns –tracer fire –the flash of hits –then through, and hard stick down, peeling over –stomach churning, churning –the great engine roaring, the stick OH so heavy here in the thin air – God she’s like a brick today………

Breathing hard, breathing hard, stink of the cordite.

Heading east now, below, behind the formation – he hit, he hit well.

There is no expectation that any of the barsteds will fall though – not these flying fortresses.

Hyakutake is still there –and grinning the dumb barsted.
Juni? –JUNI! –Oh good –here he is.
The KI 45s are going in as the coast slides below –and Iwaya braces as the climb begins again

Tail chase.
And now the enemy formation is sliding down his right again –the engine bellowing –his fighter feels like it is on a tight rope –too easy to stall up here-too trucking easy.

Fuel?
Getting low
But enough
He will not fail. Get in close –for gods sake –get in close
Hard stick over – you my friend will do
The bomber looms – it does not matter what type –he will bring it down –he must, he must
Hard left – swinging in –skidding in –firing, firing –the bombers tail looms and looms – the enemy is firing, firing –the hiss of the guns falling empty –Iwaya lets his plane roll away –points the nose down –and dives away.

He is trembling – fear? Effort? Rage? Relief?
He has never felt more alive.

Crap –that’s Lae below –has the battle really been that long –the chase that far?
His engine coughs, coughs.
Fuel?
Bingo fuel – he swings to the reserve –and can only watch now –it is a mesmerizing sight –as the bombs fall, and fall.

Five strike the runway – crap –that will be awkward
2 hit something that explodes brightly amongst the tress.
The rest kill many fish

Operations report
Lae attacked by 60 heavy bombers at 32000 feet
Intercepted by 20 KI 44 and 42 KI-45
Many planes failed to intercept – and many failed to press attacks
30 enemy bombers claimed damaged –1 KI-44 , 1 Ki-45 lost

Commanders report
Plan to intercept enemy west of PM failed –too many planes either in transit, or refueling when attack arrived.
Ki-44’s pressed attack to limit –and failed to bring down any planes
KI-45s simply lacked ability to bring guns to bear – enemy too high –too fast.

We need a heavy fighter!
Morale is good – despite failing to shoot enemy down –we are hurting him –I would hate to be a gunner in a B-17!

(Juni, Iwaya, Hyakutake flew –Inoue, Miyasaki caught on ground)

SMN Agarashi and Shimto sit bored at there damage control station on the Ryujo
Its simply an area in a passageway down near the end of the hanger deck - they are officially part of pump and flood party - the small diesel fire and salvage pump is part of their duties.
'I wish someone had told me that war was so boring" notes Agarashi dispirtidly," my arse is going numb"
Ryujo has been at action stations for 6 hrs now -steaming at full speed, but now the passageways movements change -from a gentle corkscrewing to a straight up and down pitching.

Ryujo has turned into the wind
PO Senda approaches, and our two seamen stiffen -PO Senda is always bad news.
But today he surprises them. "We are launching boys -if you duck out to the gun platform, you can watch"
The two seamen need no encouragement -its something they have wanted to do since dawn.

The gun platform is only 12 feet away through a single door -and the air smells so good once they get out there.
Its a glorious sight - Ryujo gently riding the slight swell -the great wake creaming past, the grey destroyer steaming hard behind.
A kate rumbles down the deck -crawls into the air -her black bomb snug against her belly
The PO joins them. Daring his apparent good mood, Shimto asks "Where are we striking Petty Officer?"
The PO smiles -he seems well caught up in the enthusiasm sweeping the small carrier
"The captain is fishing gentlemen - some island called Ndeni or the like -but thats not the objective -I think we are the bait boys"
"Bait?"
The PO's smile grows even bigger -but it curiously lacks humour in it
"I once stuck a stick into a hornets nest -and it wasn't pretty"
"Oh"

Another kate rumbles into the air -the three men cannot know it -but the Ryujo has kicked of the war into earnest battle again.

47th scramble again today -another frantic run to the cockpit, another breath destroying climb, another rapid cockpit start, run up -and dash down the strip -and another engine destroying climb.

47th make it in good time -the 44 can climb like a scalded cat -but today its for nothing.
Either the enemy has got lost, or its a deliberate tactic -the bombers strike Madang to the North -and 47th and Co never see them.
The evening is jovial -troops from a Special base force have been flown in today -and they bring something very preciuos with them - scotch.
Iwaya promptly "arranges " a case.
The party goes on probably far too long.
