In war, nothing can be taken for granted

For 47th, the day begins as many do - soaking wet.
These are japans frontline pilots. They are hungry. Their uniforms are falling apart in the never ending moisture. most are sick. Foot rot has struck quite a few.

Their fighting viguour remains undiminished.

Nakamura leads them over Akyab once the weather clears -another fruitless mission.
They return to bad news - the enemy heavies -sweeping in low and hard, have struck Rangoon harbour -and struck it heavily
Nakamura can describe the news to his men simply -"Its a mess"

Somebody higher up the command chain probably panics. It does not matter -not to the Tiger pilots.
By dusk, incredibly -they have moved to the paradise of Rangoon.
A paradise -baths, food -even beds.

Japan does not give medals. No commendations, no rewards, no recongnition. Just an expectation of a willingness to die for the empire.
For the men of 47th -for Inoues weary bones, for Junis' considerable stink - the bath makes it all good.

28th to the 30th

47th are resting
They are eating
They are recieving new kit.
Some are even having to remember that saluting is part of the military

Note from teller of this tale. Ive examined 47th's records very closely for this period -the final calm before the terrible storms -and I find a very interesting note in the records

"1st Lt Juni issued 2 days punishment -loss of privledges"

How?, why? -issued by whom?
History can be soooooooooooo frustrating.

The men are gathered on the front porch of the latest mess in their travels around the Pacific.
As messes go -its a good one. Once, a long, long time ago, the British were established here. They had crap planes, but they knew how to live in comfort.
Rangoon is comfortable -and well supported. It makes all the difference. Palid faces are now more healthy color, sunken cheeks are beginning to fill. Men even smile, and laugh at times once again.
Although the P38's probe the front, they do not yet come this far south - the men don't know why -nor do they really care.

The mess has a radio -a twin sister perhaps to the original beast at Canton -and it spews much the same stuff.
"An invincible ring of steel"
"calls for the Allies'To give up"
"Unshakeable faith in the Navy, the Army, the fighters, the indomitable fighting spirit of japan"

It goes on, and on, and on.

The BBC plays jazz

So they , by popular consent -listen to that instead.

The routine has again settled. Pre dawn briefings. Aircraft checks, take off, combat patrol.
Return
repeat.
And repeat
And repeat

For a change, nobody has died for the last few days, nobody has crashed, nobody has disapeared into the green wastes.
Juni -unsurprisingly -is no longer a flight leader.
How he feels about this he keeps sullenly to himself -if he shares anything, its with Inoue only.
The pair are literally inseperable now -they eat together, fly wing to wing together -share the same crude mess.

Undoubtably -they share the same bottles as well.
The world is a little larger now a radio is available - In Europe mighty battles are taking place in central russia - in the pacific -its eerily quiet

3/6/43
Nakamura reads the dispatches, the frown deepens.
Rangoon is home of Burma command, and many other HQ's - and even Japans sometimes chaotic communications net functions well here.
Intelligence reports/assessments/ sheer guesses are gathered, recent combat summaries, and the occasional vapid rumour are gathered into a single sheet of paper - 'daily enemy estimate of intentions and capabilities'
The list of bases attacked is stunning
Milne bay
Port moresby
wewak
madang
Timor
The gilberts
The numbers of bombers involved deeply disturbing
40 plus
70 plus
30 plus
and on, and on and on.

"and we wear our arses off here guarding empty sky'
the waste of effort, the futility of the last weeks is not lost on him.
The human in him is glad -tired nerves, strained bodies have needed the rest.
The fighter pilot in him - well -it still wants to fight.
needs to fight
Stuff it - orders be damned -tomorrow they will try again

It is -as per usual -a bust
The entire wieght of nakamura's fighter wing -5 sentais strong, cruises for a useless 90 minutes over Miektila - and sees nothing.

At wewak - 70 liberators blast through the zero's -and flatten place

This does not make the daily appreciation page.........................

Inoue sits in his horribly worn seat, the great blade spinning at idle . He awaits the signal to take of - the ground crew here at rangoon still look neat and tidy -and there are no great dust storms -the hard areas are still in good shape -yet to be damaged again by the war.

Inoue's cockpit shows its age now -paint peeling -a cracked glass on one guage -missing trim from just about everything. the floor where his boots rest is now very shiny compared to the white ish hue of the rest of the floor. Corrosion of the aluminium is now winning. Inoue sometimes idly wonders what the corrosion he can't see -the cancers in his wings and fuselage -is like now -but its not a useful thing to dwell on.

The cockpit has 3 small additions. The first is a very faded photo of a young woman -chinese perhaps. She stands on a busy street -and if one knows one's geography -you can tell its Shanghia.
This photo is all he has of his first wife -a single piece of cardboard -and too many painful memories
The second -fresher, more defined, is of his current wife -and he wonders -yet again -if he will ever see her once more.

There is a delay -again
Somewhere some one is having trouble getting going - again.
Another delay.
Inoues head hurt -Juni had procured something pretty viscous last night -a good drop -but with a kick of a mule
Buggar him.

Inoue undoes his straps -stands up in the cockpit -what the hell is going on?
Juni too is standing in his cockpit -they exchange glances. Rookies - bloody rookies.
Resigned to the delay, he slumps back into his seat. Too many bloody rookies.

He glances at the third and last item wired tightly to the guage board - the tooth brush looks totally out of place.
'Iwaya my old friend - some of these monkeys make you look good "

Finally they get away -another day of CAP -no contacts

Extract from nakamura's diary

..............' limited strike against akyab troops - I think this might actually be a serious thrust , and not a diversion.
Interesting. New model P 40 reported in China - again i have to wonder -when do we get new models? - wish we still had Iwaya -he could have found out for us.
Bloody Hurricanes offensively used up North too -enemy is getting bolder by the day.
This waiting for the real attack is killing us - lets get it done!
I wonder how much longer we can continue this war...............

(house full of relatives -making playing/writing regularily very hard!)

7/6/43

Juni routinely brings his fighter into Mandalaby field
Its been yet another bust -another fruitless day of hunting amongst the clouds for the Blenhiems - that as usual, get away.
He feels nothing -besides a slight headache. This field could well be anywhere in the whole Pacific -after all, what difference did it really make?
Brother dead
Father dead
No possibility of ever getting home -only death for the empire lays ahead
He is ready to do that -to die for the empire -as good as anything to die for -not that a life of indocrination can allow him to think otherwise.

As long as it comes in combat -comes quickly - comes cleanly
he climbs out of the cockpit -the faceless ground crews go to work -plenty of them here -far too many really for the limited planes now operating from here.
mandalaby? -or some such crap
Who cares.
Who really cares.
Inoue too climbs wearily down from his bird.
They don't have to speak. Where -they wonder -will they find a drink?

extract from "Fighting the tide" by Col Nakamura -a Amazon production

The defeat, the ongoing pursuit of our troops south of Akyab came as quite a shock to me.
What, I could only wonder -was the Army doing? On the map -such an innocent looking thrust -but like the tide -it was creeping, creeping into the empire.
47th remained maddingly unable to grapple with the enemy -he seemed to be able to magically avoid us - and I began to feel the first stirrings of doubt -could we actually influence the events around us anymore?

47th were tired. I was exhausted. Totally. my best men were -well were no longer at their best. i knew it -they knew it. We diid not talk about it. It just was.
At our best or not -soon, very soon, we would have to be better than our best.............

With some distaste Mr Iwaya - Minister of production, tries to rub the grease and oil from his hands.
Ships under construction, or worse, under repair are such dirty things.

On the surface -a good day -every one seemed very pleased with the progress of the new carriers - below the surface -a disaster.
Only he really knew the true cost of those floating airfields -the almost daily juggling of iron, steel, fuel, manpower -the endless robbing of peter to pay paul.
His head hurt. Those navy idiots seemed to forget he was trying to arm millions of men as well.
And the airforce -well - how many bloody airframes did they want "in reserve?"

Idiots
Idiots all of them
What in the hell did his Son die for again?

First there was the night bombers interupting the few bloody hours of sleep.
That he could handle
But this!?
Again Juni scowls as he watches the ground crews carefully winch the small foriegn shaped eggs to the undersides of his wings
Bombs!
Bombs on an interceptor!
What in the hell was this bloody war coming too!

Nakamura comes over -smiling -the bloody shnit is smiling at them!
Bloody, bloody, bloody hell!

nakamura slaps him on the shoulder "Smile old friend -maybe this will needle them into a fight eh!"
"If my bloody wings don't fall of first. Im just going to repeat myself -I hope the hell they stay cowling in their holes today" he shakes his head " we will be sitting ducks trying to fight with that crap on us"
Nakamura tilts his head raises that eyebrow of his - the damn thing is getting bushier- ' do you really think they will?"
'Fight us?"
"yes -you know -fight us"
Juni concedes the point -nakamura is almost certaintly right -chances of a dogfight ARE slim afterall.
"Come on old man -lets get to work"
"To work"

he settles in, usual routine , usual start - NOT a usual run down the strip today - she's a reluctant pig -heavy, "squashie on the controls" -a term only a pilot who has experienced flying a dangerously overloaded plane can relate to.
The flight to Akyab is without incident -the ever reliable Tonies make the rendevou- leap ahead to clear the way.

From 16000 feet the field comes into view early -a clear scar nestled against the blue, between the green
Nakamura leads them to the North, trying to hide 47th in the clouds, then finally, the signal....

'here goes............."
Stick over, left rudder, line her up over the great nose -and begin the dive.
Speed, speed....watch the speed!
The great beast begins to howl -buck and bang in the rough air -fight hard to keep her straight -ground coming up -level out -trees, forest, field, river, trees -guns? -people? - more trees rushing past below -all attention rivetted on the field ahead - ON IT! - FULL THROTTLE - flashes of men, machines -world focusing into a narrow point -on THAT Truck -and guns hammering -lower!, lower! -and tracer arching out -or at! -and the truck explodes -and he pulls the release -and we are free of that crap, flinging her hard over -and now the other way - flak-flak -passing overhead -did'nt expect that did you you $%^&ers! -and he is clear

Quite fun that

They regroup -and flee like little children who have left a turd filled bag burning on a teachers doorstep -grinning, grinning.

Behind Akyab burns -bright blooms as japans 4 engined bombers pay a rare visit to the war.

The raid costs a single hole in a single plane -damage inflicted? -unknown
Effect on morale?
As desired.

It worked the first time -why not again?
Once again 47th sweep across the field at Akyab - and again ragged snarl of japanese engines at full bore assualt the allies.

Its even better today -several allied fighters are smashed, and nary a scratch is recieved in return
47th climb swiftly away -and head for home

For some -who have not being on the recieving end before -the sight that greats them on return is akin to returning from a night at the cinema -and finding thieves have trashed the place while you were out - you feel soiled, and swiftly -angry.

The field -and worse - the tented areas -and the huts - their BEDS for heavens sake -have been obliterated.
The field is a mess - getting in will be painful -do able -but painful.

It takes a while
Nakamura is bristling with anger -one 1000lber has landed square in his "office"
Everything -what little he had -is gone
he is too proffessional to be distracted.
the ammo dumps -the fuel dumps -and most of the truks -are good
maintenance is good.
The field is -well not so -but already men swarm all over it -the pre deployed/stored crushed rock is already filling holes
decisions?
Will they be back?
Can he cover the field long enough until its operational again?
That -and cover rangoon? -the convoys?
If 6th tank regiment does its job - lures the bombers -maybe he can.
A taxi way remains undamaged -a route into the sky -at a pinch -one at a time only though.

It will have to do
"Juni!, Miyazaki! Inoue!, Ginowa! -get your birds lined up -the best go first - if they come - show us what you can do!'

Would they come?

If he was them -he would -never, ever let go of the enemies throat!

Death snapping at your heals can give you wings.
All night long every man available slaved with frantic haste to restore Mandalay field to operational status –or something barely usable, at least.

All night long the enemy night bombers growled overhead –occasionally running in –the crumps of the bombs highlighting the prone, frozen figures all over the field
They did little damage – simply pressing the men to ever greater efforts.

Dawn comes swiftly –dirty, tired, Juni, Miyazaki, Inoue, Ginowa, clambered into their birds –and waited for the word.

It was not long coming –the pickets in the hills to the north began to ring in.

Bombers. P38’s. More bombers.

Now, overhead the steady drone of 70th sentai – the first Long range Cap patrol – KI-44’s.
Nakamura keeps his birds on the ground –timing is everything –too soon – too little fuel to intercept.
Too late – with a single taxi way to use - a alley way of death.
The men swaet
Sweat some more –flight suits , heavy, cloying
Too much time to think
The picture clears – the bombers are headed towards the 6th regiment to the east –but, but……………
GO! –GO! –lets go!

Engines bark, splutter, cough into life
Juni wastes no time –oil pressures, manifolds are good –tepmeratures have already been raised –he slams the throttle – the taxi way is so narrow –no room for error…..
Miyazaki coughs in the great cloud of dust thrown up by Juni- there is no hesitation –he too simply charges into the dust –and hopes that Juni is clear.

Inoue waits a second –spots vaguely the tree line to the right –throttles up – and crashes blindly off the strip –a great explosion of mud, dirt and water from the ditch along side the strip.
He swears –a horrible string of curses –railing against the enemy, this cocked up plane and its non existent view from the cockpit, against anything, everything –himself
His fighter effectively blocks the field.

Ginowa curses him, slams hard rudder, in effective brake, slides some how past, gets away.
Nobody else can follow

The 3 44’s clear the field, bank hard right , and climb, climb, climb
The sky is huge, immense, endless today –unblemished by a single cloud –and full of twisting, turning, spitting shapes ahead.

The hurricanes have bounced 70th -70th –who have never really been that good – and sent 3 of them spinnng down –scattering the rest.
Triumphant the Hurricanes are turning for home, 15 strong.

47th’s three best pilots slash in from the side –Juni , cold, cold, banks in hard, so hard he skids mere feet past the tail of the first hurricane he engages –his guns hammer, briefly, briefly –the pilot of the hurricane almost dissolving in a horrible red spray –his plane following suit in a single stunning moment.

Juni continues the skid, converting it into a continuing turn to port, and then as hard, as hard as he can, full opposite bank, trying to get onto the tail of the next fighter –and failing -the enemy climbing swiftly up, truk it, up over his sights, , he continues hard , hard starboard then, looking for the hurricane coming in the opposite direction –but there are now three of them – the circle closes, closes –guns hammer –he never flinches –somebody must have –he lives –and guns empty he dives away – and growls in delight at the sight of the tonies –like hawks –so many, many hawks now diving into the fight -……………..

Miyazaki simply flings himself at the enemy – all enthusiasm, no skill –all anger, no calculation.
He is lucky –courage though sometimes help to make luck – and he finds a hurricane drifting across his sights.
He latches on –it’s a long chase –almost 6 seconds long –and he yells -yells the chant of upbringing, of a life of indoctorination -BANZAI!!!!!!!!!! As the hurricane inverts –chugs horrible black smoke –and falls.

A wave of relief –he’s done it –justified his place.

Ginowa kills as well -47th score 3 today.

The tonies chase the hurricanes all the way to the hills –and reap a grim harvest

12 down
It should be some time before they try to come across alone again.

Operational report
47th sentai
Field all but closed at dawn –fully operational by days end
One plane destroyed on ground.
70th report 2 planes lost
3 Kills accredited -Ginowa 1, (now 3) Miyazaki 1, Juni 1 (now 3)

Huge numbers of planes reported by recon at Cox’s bazaar –rumours abound of “the big push”
We are ready for them!

Inoue sits quietly on a log -observing the horizon to the north.
he sits on a log because its still about the only thing that he can sit on that will keep his arse above the dust - everything above ground is smashed, smashed, smashed.

The field is repaired -but its going to be miserable for some time here at maladalay
he could have spent the night in a bunker -there are PLENTY of them - but they all are too dank, humid -too crawling for his tastes.
being buried alive is a particular horror............
he stares at the horizon - at the great thunderclouds building over the hills, over imphal, the other enemy bases.
he feels the pressure -the rising humidity - the gathering storm in his bones.
Those clouds mean no enemy today - not here probably.
Inoue knows, they all know - that there are more than simple thunderstorms building to the north.

Just when would the Hurricane so long delayed break!

The lone blenhiem drops a single bomb this night -its enough
Inoue is right to sleep in a slit trench - another pilot dies with out seeing the enemies face..........

47th patrol to the north east -seeking revenge

The sky is clear -a layer of scattered cloud a false deck -at 10000 feet -47th on patrol at 16
8 fighters strong, looping lazy circles over the river crossing below.
Above -stacked in neat arrays -up sun, and at hieght -the bulk of Japans fighter forces in burma. her crack Tonies are waiting.
Nakamura has gambled again - the enemy have come at dawn each morning to this bend in the river -why not today? Some distance away -to the north -70th sentai -hoping to redeem themselves.

The reader is asked here -have you flown?
Not in the airborne busses that move millions in boredom across the heavens every day today -but here -in mid space, here where the air is alive -where the ground is more than just a vague unreal picture below -where the clouds float below in a scattered carpet -and where you look -and look -in this limitless sky - for that glint -that flash - of another plane.

Alone -you in your cockpit - you look, and look -and hope to hell you see HIM first!

Nakamura see's them first -eyes trained by years of squinting -eagle eyes attuned to the tiniest thing not of nature up here -fleeting dots to the north -many dots -coming this way
One of the dots flares -bright - and even as he rocks his wings -reaches for the mike -everyone see's the plummetting plume plunging down through the floating carpet

70th is not doing well..............

nakamura's wings rock -and you flinch -enemy! -and yes -their they are!
You take your safety off -wriggle in your seat -breath deep -and as ordered -as commanded -as lectured -to an inch of your life -you follow your leader down -detirmined -detirmined above all to stick with him

Your world becomes suddenly silent -a mind brushing out all in essentials -and everything seems so bright -bright and sharp.
And you are alive -so alive
8 fighters plunge down -the enemy are sliding in from your right wing towards the left -hunting tojo's -still oblivious to you -NO! -now they see you -2 dozen swift shapes - funny round wing tips -Spitfires -and they are turning up towards you -**** -they are floating up....steady -and almost to your own surprise you ARE SHOOTING! -tracer peeling out =- curving -curving -and now your leader is banking, banking -and you follow, follow -a hurricane? -crosses his bow -and -GOD -it bursts into flames.

"No2 -break right hard!'
His voice -so calm
You obey -instinctively -and something dark , nasty -enemy felt more than seen slides under you -you crane your neck -looking, looking -the sky is a mass of planes now -a spitfire is there -beside you! -parrallel.
he cuts in hard towards you -you curse -grunt, groan -hauling also into him -and you win -behind him!
another curse -as nakamura cuts in -and takes him down.

and the sky is empty.............
"Form on me"

47th climb -the tonies are in pursuit now - counting heads -damn -2 are missing -who?
no time to tell
Juni falls in -he nods to nakamura -holds up a finger. He has 4 kills then!

A sudden cry!
Twin tailed devils -swooping down on the tonies!
6 strong -47th swing again towards the fight
'Above gentlemen! -above us!"
You freeze - the sky seems to be filled with plunging fighters -all aiming at you!
You wait the eternity -all of 2 seconds - and break hard left -and up - getting "under " the attack.
a desperate move - no chance to attack -just survive

cannons crash -you instictively hunch up -flesh against white hot oblivion - you literally pucker up - the world gyrates -and nobody has hit you.

The bounce over -the 38's will not try to dogfight -they climb away.

You live

Soon the sky is empty again -every muscle will ache, limbs will tremble. mouth will be dry.

But you live

It is a vicious day over 6th tank regiment.
Its aday where army troops -despairing of the bombing -will dance and shout with glee at the fight spread all over the sky above them.

27 enemy planes will fall today -to the poor men of 6th - every one of them is a soothing balm

One moment you are happily chasing a prawn around your small bowl -using it to sweep up the last rice grains -15 minutes later -people are trying to kill you.

"What a bloody strange life this is" -Inoue thinks, as the world swings wildly around him " 'and how damn inconsiderate to come at lunch!"

The Liberator is doing that wonderful float up towards him - the tracer is archng at him -over him, past him -guns are crashing - that horrible stink -and the great beast flashes past and above -and Inoue swings down, and away -honour and ammunition finished for today.

Only 6 liberators today - a decoy perhaps ? -they don't press on to rangoon with any real vigour -and nobody on Japans side really gets stuck in iether - a strange combat in the general nastiness of burma.

Inoue can resume lunch shortly after .

The BBC radio here plays its jazz -and then the news.
Mandalay - if thats how you spell it! - has been crushed today.
"poor barsteds " notes Miyazuki -" 2 days filing in holes -and now they have to start all over again"
its a easy statement:expectant that the holes will be filled in of course -ready for their return -whenever that occurs.

it is also -of course we know now - extremely ignorant.

47th stood down -tired, too many brocken planes.

extract from "Shattering the Sword" a cantona production

.......and this completed Allied plans for 43, into 44.
For her part -Japan struggled in a complete intelligence vacuum - where would the blow -or blows -fall.
She had watched with frustration the steady bulid up in Darwin - the ant trails of ships and LCTs and the like passing across the top of Australia near port headland and the like - but blind to anything in the torress straight.

Akyab did not seem to be a real effort -but what if it was?
parishimio was under dail recon
the gilberts were felt to be now indefensible -but had to be defended

And at port moresby - the daily bombing was leaving many troops there eyeing the back door -the gloomy Kokoda track -with trepidation -would it be their grave?
Japan could do little -except wait.
Zekes - the "new fighter" were pouring out of the factories now - but they were not the new plane she needed -not with so many new allied types about to enter the fray.

But hope remained in many breasts -the Combined fleet remained -undefeated, repaired -ready.
With luck, and skill -a fatal blow to America could yet be gained -and this terrible war brought to a close.

The day for 47th is spent as many, many pilots spend many, many hours -lounging in deck chairs -awaiting "the scramble"
Today, today there is a bonus -newspapers -and the radio.
The newspapers are full -of -well - crud. The war has been terribly quiet since the battles of the gilberts -and the comments, the columns -are, well interesting.
many are calling on the Allies to surrender.
One column is daring to compare the Empire to that British - as it fades -"japan will rightfully replace her -guarded forever by her great Navy"

In short -hard news, real facts -are hard to glean

There are clues of course - what is NOT for sale any longer in japan -cars, any machinery, clothing - the lack of advertising.........

Add the calls for households "to stop with holding copper, tin, rubber..............

It tells a quiet story to Inoue.....

Nakamura talks to his base commander. The thought -you win some, you lose some, keeps, for some strange reason -hammering through his mind.
He is tired, they are all tired -but the last three days can only be classified as a success.
For three days they have circled endlessly over rangoon -and the reason has been starkly obvious to all.
Convoys. Lots of convoys. troops. many, many troops -an entire corp at least -now steaming north past the field.
Undamaged.
A stunning success.

But the loss................ Nakamura's base commander has more than just this field to care for -he has many -many fields to the north -and the news is not good. Malandaly -destroyed. Magwe -wiped out.
Worse - casualties -too many, far too many amongst the engineers -the construction gangs.
"there might not be any rebuilding Sir" the base officer grimaces " Not unless we can rebuild those units -we have to restore them first"
Nakamura spits into the dust with disgust - " a sorry day indeed when i can't protect the men who keep me in the air"
A shrug opposite him -what is there to say after all?
Ok then. this mission is all but done -time to take the bombers on -again. the Army is depending on him -on everyone of them -again.

So be it.

Juni collapses into his chair - -God -another day of laps -endless bloody laps.
His back hurts, his legs ache -crud -it all hurts. He needs a bath. Not that that is going to happen.
5 minute alert -still
How many cruddy ships did the navy really want to cram into that harbour!
Crud
Worse - 100000 extra men in Rangoon. Try getting a drink now!
Crud.
"hey Inoue ! -whats the news? -you got anything left for tonight?"
Inoue smiles "Old foxes such as I always have a bolt hole my friend -as soon as that sun sets -"
Juni leans back - tries to close his eyes - "Why is it always so bloody hot?" he thinks.
"And the news?"

Surprisingly Inoue has some
"Oh, some sort of Allied raid - Lunga -remember that hole?"
Not easy -far too many holes in the last 15 months -all much the same -dirty strips, horrible huts, jungles -and the heat -always the bloody heat.
But he can remember - the papagoda - the Baths -crud -that place had a bath didn't it -and Ice!
"Hey ! I do -crap -we can't let them take that place -only ice machine in the whole of the pacific!"

Inoue sounds disgusted- in who its hard to tell behind closed eyes " No chance of that I think -the allies have stuffed up -lots of burning ships, sunken carriers -sounds like the gilberts all over again."
Juni only half hears -sleep is already coming
"Good thing too" he mumbles - "ice machines are like gold"............

"What! -we are sailing! Impossible!" Smn First class Miyazaki could hardly believe it.
This great floating hotel was actually going to sail!
No, it was true. Already the fuelling barge was departing - and the call to leaving stations crackled across the Tanoy.
At last! At last!
Yamato, and Miyazaki sails at last
It does'nt matter where too -it doesn't matter what lies ahead. Finally he might get to see some action.

47th spend the day doing more laps.
The radio is suddenly very quiet about Lunga...............

Juni opens a bleary eye to the predawn light.
Oh crap -he feels bad. very, very bad. If that was true Scotch Inoue produced last night then his grandfathers home made Saki must truly be a pure spirit.
Should he get up ? -or vomit first?
No -bladder is screaming -and other things need attention too.
The latrines -as usual -are foul - Heavens -Japanese are not meant to live like this!
Bath -God he'd like a bath -but a crude shower will have to suffice.

Juni's flying suit is decidedly weathered -its only a month or so since he got this one - bloody tropics -hell on leather, hell on cotten -hell on anything.

Breakfast - a quick one -nothing to improve a rapidly souring disposition -or a heavily beating head.
Gathering -whats Nakamura got for us today? -more endless circles?
Sweep.
Sweep! -heavens -back to the offensive!
About time too -enough of this circle crud

As the sun bursts into life, Rangoon too explodes -it is going to be a major effort today -a morale booster -and a warning to the enemy -no more freebies.
Rangoon/Moulimien represent the heaviest concentration of fighters Japan can muster -and today Nakamura wields them like a club -no finise, no subtle planning -just the throbbing roar of nearly 200 fighters in packed formations forming up, circling rangoon - rattling roofs, sending a thousand babies into screaming fits -dragging every eye skyward.
As it is intended too.
They stream north.

The Tonies lead -, 47th is tucked in close behind, and juni is sober now -very , very sober.
Enemy fighters
A squadron perhaps - a patrol.
Arrogant #@!$%'rs
The Spitfires are good planes -but this is murder -they don't stand a chance
There is little time to scatter -no chance to fight - the japanese find the hardest thing to do is to avoid collision as they fairly leap upon them.

To juni's shock -one spit tries to turn into them - he drifts across his bows -and Juni finds this deflection too easy.
One second, maybe two -his tracer reaches out -the spit flashes across his bows, already beginning to break up, disintergrate.
ACE

3 kills in 9 days.
but he has a lot more yet to revenge his father, his brother.
A lot more.

12, maybe 14 kills.
2 planes lost -some idiot turned left whan everyone turned right.
The men congratulate him - but there will be no celebration.

Tojo is speaking over the radio tonight.

The radio hisses, crackles -and for some -it truly conveys how far they are from home tonight.
'people of Japan, tonight I call upon you to think of our brave men fighting deep in the south pacific -fighting against the American imperiallists. The enemy have invaded one of our bases, deep, deep in the pacific -and even as i speak -their carriers -as in the Gilberts -burn, and their troops are once again trapped on a hostile shore"
Do not believe that they are "there to stay" as they claim. They are not
Our Mighty navy, once again will back the troops - troops willing to fight to the death for the empire - and drive them into the sea..
In the meantime, we as a nation must be prepared for new sacrifices............."

Juni catches inoue's sweat covered face in the crowd.
they make their way onto the porch -where the air may or may not be a fraction cooler
"So the allies are ashore for good then?" Juni puts it out there
'yes" Inoue sounds grave -even graver than usual " yes, and i think this might just be the beginning"

extract from "Shattering the sword" a Cantona production

CV Essex Hors de combat
3 CVE probably sunk
A BRITISH CV spotted south of lunga
And still the troops come ashore -3 divisions of them. To the japanese high command, there could be no doubt -this HAD to be countered.
We know now the for 6 hours the debate raged in Imperial HQ - plans, new plans, a million ideas to counter the threat.
Admiral Herbiesan -however stood firm. The plan agreed to -a long, long time ago - would stand.
It would be victory - or ignoble defeat. The orders stood.
Now for the implementation..........

Heavy thunderstorms again roll in across the front -and 47th spend a wet, wet forenoon
No one minds -the harbour has been packed again today -a quick in and out of some small tankers.
It clears before midday -and its back to the laps.

Further to the North nakamura scores a good victory - 20 odd enemy bombers are bounced by a pack of fighters on Long range CAP - and few survive the encounter.
Here in Burma japan still has many teeth.
Attention, however, is now firmly fixed elsewhere.
The enemy are attacking on Lunga - and now Japan must show her enemies that they will fight for every inch.
Japan is thousands of miles away - they must make it feel like millions.

Studying the records of 47th, one can follow the ebb and flow of events through a very simple expedient.
Length of the operations reports, the pages of de briefs - the better the results -the longer the reports -full of details and expansive descriptions.
Defeats are sparse, crib notes.

losses are usually one simple line -pilot officer so and so reported KIA, or MIA, or rarely -WIA

The reports for this month have gotten thinner, and thinner.
Combat air patrol -X number of sorties, Y number of planes damaged, down for scheduled maintenance.
No reports of combat.

28/6/43

At lunga, a curious quiet descends.
The 3rd marines have gotten to within 500 yrds of the field - literally waded through a mile of mangroves and indescribable swamp from the beach head.
And here they have been stopped -cold.
A year of bunker building has given the japanese plenty of time to construct the veritable maze of bunkers facing them.
Each one has consumed literally dozens of palm trees, tons of coral and sand. All are interlocked, tunnels and trenches cunningly connecting each one.
They ring the field -on the dry ground -where japanese artillery can fire -where as the allied guns sink helplessly into the mud.

The allies out number the defenders 3 to 1 -and it is not enough.
There can be no outflanking manouvres - no blasting out with armour.
This will be another battle of yards, of inches, each individual bunker a fortress -each one manned with well fed, well armed troops -who will never surrender -until dead.

The Commander of the 3rd marines knows the score. Another Gilberts CANNOT be allowed. Each day is slowly killing the navy offshore, each day the field remains in enemy hands is another day for the imperial fleet to come ever closer.
10 transports sunk last night by the japanese navy's first thrust-the tassafroga see bees shattered.
A battleship torpedoed just off shore by the omnipresent betties
They had to take this field.
HAD too!

28/6/42

Admiral Yamato faces Mr Iwaya with a cold eye
"Simply put, production minister -can we sustain this?"
Mr Iwaya smiles -its a wry one "Sustain the lunga battle -or this cursed war?"
Yamato hesitates -he too smiles -it is a fair question.
"I once promised Tojo 6 months - I've given him 18 -get me to 44 Mr Iwaya"
The production Minister Nods - "I can do that Admiral. I have restared some fighter production -it will cost you land bombers I think - I am pushing navy types as hard as i dare though."
"Good -I........."
"let me finish though -I must know to the single frame your losses - not the propaganda the ministry spouts -but true losses
Everyone wants everything -this I can't give. tell me your losses -and I will do my best"

For a moment Yamato hesitates
"This week -I have lost 5 fighter Sentais shattered -AM3's mainly, some AM2's - KI types as well. 1 bomber sentai is no more. About 100 planes -maybe more, maybe less."
'This week?!!"
"This week"

A long silence fills the pannelled room. A clock ticks loudly, then , perfectly timed, begins to bong midday.
"January 44 Admiral - tell Tojo January 44. You have to finish this by then - or............"
Yanmato grimaces. "I feared as much. There is much to do then. "
