25/26 of the 7th month 1943

47th successfully transfer with out loss to - &*^%.
This field is large, well equiped. There are proper buildings still here -concrete aprons, taxi ways.
A new thing for 47th -a radar net.

Other fighters are here, and the ground team still well organised.
Do the enemy know they are here? -probably
Tomorrow, men will die -one way or the other.
Nakamura orders all planes to be airborne at dawn, that twinkle in his eye is back "lets see what they have got hey?

Juni spends the evening watching the loading of his ammunition very carefully - one tracer for every 3 "straight".
For him -its good to know that a fight is coming

Its as if they have never been away, except for all the ghosts that is. Canton field looks a little shabbier -some of the buildings have been crudely repaired, the men are older.

The great radio Juni remembers is still there. Of course only Juni really knows the place well - the original home of 47th when they numbered a mere 9. For the rest - just another airfield. New opponents . New landmarks to learn.

47th spend the day on orientation flights -difficult to do in the current crappy weather. The enemy have been active -aggressively so -hitting ships in Honkers, terrorising the poor Ki-27's based there.

47th go looking -but no contact is made today.
Evening falls -a satisfactory day. A unit of betty bombers arrive, other fighter units.
Nakamura gathers them together -the weather tomorrow is forcast to be better.
That sparkle is definately back in the eye.
"Time to announce our arrival men, this is what we will do..................."

When you get down to brass tacs, when you really look at the heart of each and every fighter pilot, there is one absolute common thread that binds them all -that seperates them from so many of us.

Deep, deep down -they are all speed freaks.

Flying fast is good
Flying fast, flying LOW-is the pure essence of life.

Miyazaki is grinning. Its easy to forget that they are at war. There is just his plane, the formation, and the ground -so close.
The Tojo,s lead the way -on the hard deck, following the valley, the roads north. somewhere behind, and boringly above, the Oscars and the betties follow.
The ground flashes underneath, the obstacles rush into view, the eyes, the hands, the feet, your machine work as one, smoothly, around this, bank left, bank right, startled peasants flash underneath, a horse startled bolts, a river, some troops -chinese?, gone already in your wake.
The engine roars -and you do not hear it -concentarting as you never have - another bank, vortex of dust from wing tips so close.

This is sooooooooooooooo Truking good!

47th zoom over the last rise -the enemy field lays before them - caught totally by surprise.
The fighters blast over the drome, seeking targets, seeking anything to blast - but there is nothing.
A few guns spit at you -tracer lazily falling behind, Miyazaki pulls himself into a delightful bank, rolls her once, and the "attack" is over.

The bombers bomb -poorly -nobody is lost though.

The return is convential, boring.

The lack of enemy is explained on return -the AVG is about, also looking for trouble. 70th sentai from Honkers has lost a man to them.

Nakamura is pleased -despite the lack of damage inflicted "Objective achieved -no more freebies for them!"
Like a quarterback (a term Nakamura has never heard of -but would instantly recongnise) they plan tomorrows play..........

Again Juni curses
This buggar is really starting to piss him off. Another glance at the fuel guage - 50-60%?. Enough.
The enemy bomber -some sort of twin engined design -new to him, probably chinese -re appears from the cloud bank some kilometre from him.
Barsted! -out witted again.
Juni curses again -clips the mike -"DOVE!, DOVE!, DOVE-down the river, down the river!
Other curses, a cool roger.
Juni savegly kicks the rudder, hammers the stick into his thigh -top rudder as the KI-44 banks hard -world vertical, he grunts, grunts -the only way to suck the oxygen in under so many G's

The hunt is on

The bomber spots its hunters -it too banks -heads for the next bank of thick rain clouds - keeps heading north, north for safety.

The KI-44's, 8 strong, chase.

The bomber reaches the clouds first, Juni goes for the left, others for the right.
Left bank, follow the cloud edge, follow the cloud edge, crap -bigger cloud than he thought.............

The bomber pops out -cunningly, skillfully headed the other way -again -this time diving for the deck -this time, well away, safe

Crud

Juni calls of the chase -once again the recon has got away...............

Now, where the hell are they?
They circle for a few moments, all feeling that emotion no fighter pilot ever wants to experience -the where the truk are we moment?
Not good.
Juni struggles with the map - not an easy exercise -it lies as always strapped to the noteboard on his thigh -only this time nothing on it matches what he sees, should see below him.
Truk
Truk again.

"Got it Juni!"
Ginowa -a good man
"You aren't going to like it though!"
"Eh?'
"Thats Henchow over there"
Henchow -that far north?
Shi# -how the hell did he let them get dragged that far north?
"OK - got it -lets get the hell out of here -no place for children I think"

They are lucky. No enemy come up and fight them.
Feeling quite sheepish, they make for home - an interesting exercise in itself today -fuel will be tight.

Nakamura takes it well -aggression is good -that sort of agression -well...............
"No enemy though?"
"None"
Nakamura considers this for a moment -what to make of this?

extract from Shattering the Sword, a Cantona production

once again the Japanese could only wait. many in the high command wished to counter attack -Yamato would not be moved -the plan would stand.
But it was puzzling. Lunga had fallen -but the Solomons could hardly be called active.
Port Moresby was being bombed -but surely the Allies had greater resources than that?

And Burma - the most puzzling of all. The whole front seemed to be falling into a lull again. Burma was once again considered to be "secure"
Intelligence was a total bust.

So Japan waited. Japan built fortifications. And continued to build ships, and planes, and arms.
The oil -the resources still flowed. As the war moved into August, even Mr Iwaya, minister of production, eternal pessimist, began to feel a growing sense of confidence.

The Allies, of course, were about ready to shatter it.........................

The day dawns heavily overcast. By 9 am the rain has settled in.
9:15 -and a smiling Nakamura sticks his head into the mess door. A hundred expectant faces look up. They are not to be disapointed.
"No chance of flight ops today men" -the grin widens"See you in the bars -12 hour pass for all those not on duty........."

Once again dear reader -we avert out gaze to avoid insulting our sensabilities...............

herbiesans note ; turns slow over chrissy! - went to the Australian war museum today in canberra -took a long hard look at a zero, a P40, a Mustang -and lots of other top stuff.

Was bitterly disapointed to watch a video presentation of the battle of midway - still pushing the myth of nagumo being struck with his decks full of aircraft

Hi Hosho -merry christmas!
New fighters 5/44 Im afraid
They will have to struggle with what they have got

1/8/43

Its not a good day for the 47th.
The dawn breaks cloudy, low overcast -a bitter cold wind, ground wet underfoot.
Nearly 40 odd very sore heads have minds on just about anything else than Nakamuras briefing
Un escorted bombers have got into the habit of bombing exposed japanese troops at position, x -we intend to.... yeah, yeah, lets just bloody well get to it.
****.
heads hurt.

The departure -well, its one. Planes fail to start. The concentration takes forever -half the unit apparently is on the wrong frequency.
The flight to the patrol area is a mess -the low clouds and cover play havoc with the sentais - in disgust nakamura drags them above it -to 20000 feet -where KI-43's should be waiting.
They., of course, aren't.

A fruitless 2 hours are spent circling the clouds -if the enemy are about -well, a thousand bombers could be in the same patch of sky for all they would know -or care.
The day seems to be spent in acidic comments -back biting -and promises of 'i'll see you later"
If the days leave was meant to improve things -its been a disaster

The topping of the cake comes upon return -the AVG -in strength -has paid a visit -circling the field 3 times in their absence.
The day -well -they should have stayed in bed for all the good 47th have done today.

Nakamura retreats to his hut immediately on return.
he, of course, is not happy.

The orders are posted within the hour. tomorrow(gods willing) canton airgroup will attack
And heaven help anyman tomorrow who's mind is not on the job!

pre dawn
All over the base, men are awakening.
For the pilots, many minds think the same thoughts.

there is shame.
There is embarresment
There is detirmination.
Today -they will not let HIM down. They will atone for yesterdays fiasco.

60 odd grim, detirmined men take to the skies -detirmined never to let Nakamura down like yesterday -he deserves more than that.

Regretfully, by days end, they are still looking for a fight.

it rains.
rains, rains, and rains.

Mid morning.
Nakamura calls the parade.
he speaks little.
"We have gone soft. This -I blame on myself."
PT -we run today my friends, we run."

In the belting rain, they run.

It does them all good -very, very good.

deep in the ministry building, deep in the deep of the night -Mr Iwaya works.

The piles of paper to his left grows steadily smaller, the pile to the right, higher.
His staff - like ghosts, routinely come in, take away the stream of orders, reports, production figures.

None dare remind him of the hour. Its been many months since they have seen him like this -sober -at his work.
They wonder at it -but do not question it. So they too, work.

Yesterday - only yesterday, the news had come -twin hammer blows. The great german disaster on the russian front.
The American presidents speech

"There will be no surrender - only the grinding of japan to dust"

Mr Iwaya works. All of the empire works. The gates of hell are creaking open -and its hot breath bites at their very arse.........

Nanchang

Cornerstone of the Japanese defense in China. A strange term thinks Nakamura as he wings his fighter over into final approach – seeing how Tokyo rose is always talking about the latest offensive, victory or advance in China
When, he wonders, did Nanchang become part of the defense?

Cornerstone or not –the place stank. A decrepit field, manned by decrepit units –rookies, second rates. Something the allies have clued onto.
Something Nakamura intends to take advantage of.
47th settle in, the briefings are held.. the orders are simple. Standing patrol over the bridges to the North. Look for trouble.

15 Ki 44’s circle high above the great brown plains of China. Today the horizon is limitless, the sky above the same.
Below, the zeros circle. Somewhere below them, the KI-43’s –merging into the land.
Juni adjusts his mask –again. He swivels his head again –the never ceasing search. Rookies to his left – some veterans to his right. Nakamura ahead.

And swift moving shapes, left to right –there, on the horizon –same height.
At last
“BANDITS, bandits –4 o clock –level –5 k’s!”
a rookie –voice high with excitement and fear
‘Roger everybody –free chase men –good hunting!” cold, calm. Nakamura

Wing over, stick over, throttle full!
Level, swinging right, swinging right –the dots grow, grow, crosses now –crosses, wings, canopies –P40’s! –iron dogs, Firing, firing as the P40 flashes across the bow, miss!

Wheeling, wheeling hard, hard, breathe! –P40 upside down, pilot bailing.
Good, some one scores
The iron dogs break hard right, dive, , and Nakamura follows them, and they all dive, down, down into the wheeling melee below.

DOGFIGHT!

And now he is hammering down, down, the glints and shapes wheeling each way about.
Juni picks his target - and another plane picks him – too slow my friend, a hard kick, turning in and under the diving fighter trying to get his six – a fat, fat thing –a Lancer! –and now you really should not be playing with the big boys in that my friend.

The lancer knows this too –and it peels away for safety.
Crap

Pulling up –47th rejoin the wheeling melee –and for nearly three interminable minutes 2 dozen odd men try to kill each other, and mostly fail –the fight spreading all over the sky.

Ammunition expended Juni dives away, several Tojo’s follow.
Nakamura pulls up along side –indicates going for home.

The AVG hit them.
Juni see’s them –too many years of experience, too many fights to allow the deadly relaxation of a fight thought done to catch him –he wheels under the diving attack –rolls onto his back –and clears the area -empty guns leave no choice.
Many, however, have yet to learn – and four 44’s fall,.

Nanchang –a frantic field now –straining to sustain the fight. The fighters return in ones’, and twos. The ammunition belts are raced to the machines. Men grab a few mouthfuls of fluid, while the hand pumps are frantically turned.
Then they race away again – the fight continues.

Dusk

Nakamura takes the score. Maybe ten enemy are down today.
But 47th have lost 10 men as well. Many, faces barely learnt. Quickly to be forgotten. But veterans too have gone.
Too many .
Of the 26 pilots he has left, only 9 have kills to their names –far too many will at this rate, never kill.
Tomorrow –he feels it –Nanchang will be hammered. Should he fight? Can he fight.?

He spies Juni
‘And?’
‘too much chatter.’ Too few wingman doing their job. Poor shooting. No, terrible shooting. Basic skills –the lack off”
In his heart Nakamura knows he is right. But what can he do?

Operations report
47th sentai
Conducted LRCAP operations in conjunction with mixed numbers of navy /army fighters.
Engaged in a series of combats Hurricanes, lancers, mixed variety of P40.
Losses 10 Ki 44
6 AM3a/AM3
Kills 1 P40E (pilot unknown)
8 to other units.

Total kills now 43

(experience level has sunk to low 60’s!)

Midnight
And miracles happen
From
HQ southern command
To
47th sentai

In anticipation of forthcoming allied offensive –47th is transferred to reserve training.
Transfer to ####### immediately

Every day the allies have been coming -bombing outer perimeter bases through out the pacific, all along the Burma front.
To the pilots, they merge into one long struggle -a nightmare with out end.
But some things do end -the constant pressure does tell - and although it would take a few days for the realisation to arrive, this was the week that saw the first foundations of the great wall of defence, begin to crumble.

At Rangoon -for the first time -Allied P38's sweep the skies -and take a bitter harvest.
At Lae - the bombers inflict what may well be terminal damage.

In less than a week, japan has lost a huge slice of its monthly production of army fighters - the KI-44 in particular.

For high command -there is a hobsons choice.
Fight now -and be ground down to dust, or pull back -and probably be ground to dust anyway.
Its new intelligence that swings the argument. Rumours of a new bomber -the B-29, are filtering through. And although few, if any in japans high command can comprehend the home land under attack , Mr Iwaya can.

The 44 is the only fighter capable of reaching the new bomber .
The only one capable of defending the industry, the home lands, the captured refineries.

He wins the argument

The KI-44 is pulled from the front - the front will have to manage.

Extract from 'fighting the tide" by Colonel Nakamura

August 43. And I find myself in the phillipines -charged with the rebuilding of the interceptor wing of the airforce.
I would have preffered combat.

47th -30 odd pilots -and only 10 I would consider expert. 10 barely skilled. The last -the remainder -I viewed with horror -many had less than 30 hours flying. None in fighters.
And of all the KI-44 sentais -47th was the best!
And I was to "develop a highly effective bomber interception wing?"

Who in the hell where they kidding?
Duty, however, was duty.

But first -I had more pressing needs...............

Editors note:

47th reorganise

new flight leaders are assigned - the best pilots they have

Juni - (exp 87)
Miyazuki -(exp81)
Chuzabulo- (76)
Fujimoto - (80)
Shiiyama (75)

These are the best -they all have a single kill only though -Juni still has 5
There are only a few other pilots with kills, and most pilots are in the less than 65 range

The attack arrived at 3 am sharp - a low series of crumps from out in the dark of the jungle -the shriek -and then the Ka THUMP!, KA THUMP! of the motars arriving.

Little damage is done. But the attack serves its purpose. the partisans know they are here -and welcome them in their own "manner"
Nakamura has something elese to worry about...........

The radio here, at Clarke, is more modern, ex American. It plays the same rubbish though as the old british one at canton.
Today, however -there is news worth listening to

"Tokyo today announces the sinking of a british R class battleship near the island of port blair. Attacked with out significant loss by Army bombers, the battleship sank after being struck by numerous bombs, delivered with great courage by our Army pilots.
Our pilots.....................

"Port blair eh?" notes Miyazuki, one eyebrow cocked with doubt -" don't we have only light bombers there?"
"Yes " Juni answers, and his contempt for the broadcast is plain " and if they can sink a battleship -the navy might as well go find another job"
"So what do you think?"
"Think? Juni shakes his head " I think it begins"
he leaves the briefing room -"Come on you sorry excuses for pilots -lets go!"

Its a simple manouvre -in theory
Stick hard over, rudder in, bank the plane to the wings almost vertical position, then using' top rudder" -using the rudder as the elevator - and your elevators as the 'rudder', maintain a hard, high g bank -keeping the nose level with the horizon.

For Juni, for Miyazuki -bread and butter -something no thought is given too.
But for the rookies...............

"For Gods sake! -more top rudder!" -the frustartion cannot be hidden -as yet another 44 falls onto its back -and sickenly falls into the spin.

"FULL OPPOSITE rudder! -stick forward -unstall -then pull out !"
"Dog on a stick!"

Can they be that bad? yes. Juni shakes his head.
How in the hell will they survive.?
he has no idea -and yet they must -they must not only survive -they had to fight as well.

Its a long day, fortunately no one is killed, and all some how get back alive.

Tokyo rose is in full voice -now claiming a carrier sunk, and yet another R class battleship. Transports by the 100's too are'burning brightly".
The true picture is of course, obscured. One thing they all sense -carriers mean a big effort
feelings are ambivialent -some wish they were there. Others - those with more experience - are more circumspect.

The partisans attack again this night -more screaming mortars from the dark.
More interrupted sleep.

Extract from shattering the sword -a cantona production

................the troops continued to pour ashore at port blair. For the japanese, the 9th and 10th were terrible days of shattered allusions . From Victoria point, tavoy, the Nicobar islands the Betty and Nell bombers, well escorted -struck.
These were the very, very best of japans spear -confident, highly trained -certain to inflict yet another crushing defeat on yet another invasion.

The fighters -heavily mauled -got them through.
The Flak - the flak was sheer murder, dragging bomber after bomber down -or forcing again, and again, premature torpedo release.
few -if any bombers got nearly near enough to the superbly skippered british carrier -and no hits were obtained.
Some transports -easier targets -were hit - and the relic George Averoff too was struck -but for the cost of shattered squadrons, shattered dreams - it was a low cost indeed.

japanes bomber units continued to flow towards Thailand and Malaya - they would keep trying and..................

What is training?
Giving the ability to conduct a given set of skills competently?
Thats how modern speak tells it. For the flight leaders of 47th - its "grit your teeth -and do it again, and again, until it becomes automatic'

There can be no second chances, no "nearly good enoughs"
failure equals death.
war is a harsh school indeed. few graduate.

Nakamura has a real office. A real staff HQ. A real ready room, real met office, parachute packing room, mess hall. Everything. All ex American of course -but still greatly appreciated.
They have been there only a few days -but considering the time they may be there -deals have already been done.

To the south east of the field great Radio towers disclose the HQ of 14 th Army -communications centre -clearing house for a vast amount of signal traffic for the pacific and beyond.
Again the magic bottles of scotch have paved the way -and now Nakamura has a daily situation report -untainted by propoganda, lies, or wishfull thinking.
Depressing as it is, somehow nakamura knows its essential to know what is really going on. 90% of the Empire may bask in ignorance - thats not for him.

Invasions Tulgia, 1000 ship bay -inevitable.
Heavily damaged enemy battleships off Port Moresby -for real this time -better news.
Port Blair -were they really using the Empress of Japan as an assualt liner? Crazy stuff.
But where was the fleet?

reports done, he turns to the never ending war on paperwork.
A knock on the door. His aid looks pale,
"Sir! -an attack!"
An attack? -where? -what? -a million things flash through his mind.
"70th sentai sir -one of their trucks has been hit enroute to manilla"

Crud
Trucking partisans! - didn't we come here to liberate them?
"casualties?"
"11 dead , 8 are pilots sir"

"Get me 70ths commander. And get me 14th Army HQ -we have to respond to this"

Nakamura ponders the scene before him
Overhead, its another stunningly beautiful day - the sky so bright -the small clouds so white.
The air is still
The graves are dark

Nakamura has lost a lot of men now - in combat, in accidents, through disease, mis adventure. But none like this. They had all died, every one of them - knowing the risks, and with a chance to mitagate them. But this - a bomb buried in the road?
The sheer un fairness of it all is what hurts the most.
To did, to die, so uselessly.....................

The ceremony is quick, and the men soon dismiss -and life of the airfield quickly moves back into gear.

"Amendment to training order one:
All training flights shall now fly armed.
At completeion of training flight drills -as detirmined by Flight Lts - units shall conduct straffing runs against suspected partisan units, villages supporting suspected partisan units - and ANY -repeat ANY traffic spotted in area marked on map"

Be hard
Be strong -the Empire demands it.

Juni and Miyazuki share the table at the evening meal
Miyazuki, is again full of bubbling confidence, and good humour " A enemy carrier sunk at Port Moresby -they can't have many left!"
Juni grunts non commitably , shovels some more food " More interesting my friend -new enemy fighter -they call it the hellcat"
"hellcat?"
"Yes"
"Juni -what the hell is a hellcat?'

Juni cocks his head - thinks for amoment. "OK - take a couple of alley cats -put em in a sack. Throw in a firecracker or two"
More food
"Open the sack -ta da! -hellcats"

Miyazuki grins "That nasty ?"
"That nasty"

This is the BBC

The Admiralty reports that today several battleships of the Imperial fleet attempted to interrupt the Landings at Port Blair
In a series of running battles, described by some sources as”the greatest battle since the start of the war” a task force of light cruisers, led by Captain Grace on the Light cruiser Kenya successfully fought of a heavy battle group of ships –led by what is believed to be the battleship Ise.

The admiralty reports that all enemy ships were heavily damaged –with several confirmed sunk.
Damage to our ships is ‘reported as light –one light cruiser however is reported sunk.

In other related actions the Admiralty reports that carriers operating in the Port Blair area successfully avoided enemy warships overnight –and then struck heavily during the day at retreating Japanese cripples.

Heavy air engagements continue over the invasion beaches –where fighting continues.
Again our losses are reported as light.

Elsewhere in the Pacific, combined American and Australian troops continue to land “against light opposition” at Port Moresby…………….

Nakamura loses 3 planes in training accidents today –none in 47th’s ranks, but it will only be a matter of time.
The first anti partisan attacks go in –they are very popular it seems, although what results, if any they have –are yet to be seen.
It’s a routine day at Clarke

47th spend it in complete ignorance of the most bloody day of the war since Majuro……..

(HUGE day of the war -personally High Command starts to think port Blair might be held!)
I will let Cantona describe the battle if he likes -for 47th they must remain ignorant)

The mess is relatively quiet tonight.
The men are tired - as they should be -they are being driven hard.
Tonight there are few card games, little jocality -many ears are tuned to the radio.

News

What connects you to the world. What stimulates debate, argument. raises fear, raises confidence.
Its mixed tonight. Some truly believe the Mutsu has covered herself in glory -others are not so sure.
Whatever the truth is -Port Blair is turning it appears to many, to be another majuro, the news from port moresby, is sparse.
Which cannot be good.

Nakamura sits quietly in one corner, his newspaper unread. He is doing something he gets great pleasure from -simply observing his men.
Its an interesting exercise.

In one corner, something catches his eye. One of the new men - his name totally escapes him is also observing his fellow flyers. But nestled on his knee is a sketch pad - and occasionally the head goes down, and the short stubby pencil goes to work.

Intrigued he wanders over.
The sketch is good. No, not good. Bloody excellent.
The young man -startled , looks up. Embarressment swims across his face
Nakamura places a hand on his shoulder "please carry on -these are really quite good"
"Thankyou sir"
he looks up at him --for sure?_-yes, he does want me to continue. The pencil goes back to work.

A sudden thought comes into Nakumura's mind. Why not?. "Young man -can you draw me a Tiger?"
'A tiger sir?"
"yes -a very nasty, terrible tiger"
"I'll do my best sir"

Nakamura ponders -its been too long since Tojo's Tigers ruled the sky.

you have a talent for writing herbs...
you paint the atmosphere so well (you get that mixture of feelings). your "combat posts" are excellent, but the ones like the last one are just so authentic.

raise my hat to you maestro...
