it took tremendous effort -considerable skill -and far too much time that could have been devoted to keeping the planes in the air.
But there were no lack of volunteers, and also an amazing amount of talent on the base.

Nakamura made a competition of it - and many entered. Within 12 hours nearly a dozen entries were ready for inspection, and they drew considerable crowds.
The Tigers were displayed along one wall of one of the hangers, and in the early afternoon light, they made for an impresive art display indeed.
For an hour or so, not a man thought of the war, thought of the 5 planes lost today - every mind was turned to those paintings.
Which would Nakamura select?

Finally - in a display that any dignitory would be proud of -he made his choice

Tomorrow the sentais would stand down. None were to fly until the new symbol wasfreshly applied.
The planes may be tattered, battered, aging now.
But the Tiger would blaze forth

Battleship Yamishiro

Captain Iishi could almost taste the ashes in his mouth
How could he atone for this?

His grip tightens on the guard rail, and he looks down at the great guns below his bridge.
The great barrells point proudly ahead -glistening.

Not paint blistered.
Not empty

Below, he knew, 100's of men must be wondering -how could they not have been used?
How -while the 4 inch batteries fight so hard -they could remain silent?

A bitter taste indeed

Out fought. Out manouvered.
three nights in a row now, the great battlewagons of japan had steamed into action - and her great guns had failed them.
Something was wrong, terribly wrong, with Japanese gunnery.

he grits his teeth. breathes hard.
No aerial pursuit at least.
They would try again. They must.

And a last thought. Where the hell was Yamato and his carriers?

As the sun rises bright and hot again into the phillipino sky - and the day begins anew - dozens of men are busy at work utilising stencils and paint, remarking 47th's Tojo's.

The sky again is a brilliant blue -the usual scattered clouds -most that will form into Thunderheads by the afternoon over the mountains.
it will be another hot, hot day. By midday the sun will be baking the concrete aprons, browning already dark burnt bodies, shimmering, hazing the surrounding jungles and paddy fields.
It will become still, and the whole world will limp.

This is Clarke. Iether Hot, or Humid, or hot, and humid.
For Europeans, for those of more gentle climes - this is something one needs to experience -day , after day, after day.
It has a subtle, unseen affect.
Lassitude.
Work has to be done -but now? -in this heat?
later perhaps
Do we need to do this?
Cut corners.
Ahh stuff it.
Its too stuffing hot

The heat, the humidity cannot be avoided. It drains. It viscerates.
Some -but not many thrive in it.
Nakamura does not - but he recongnises it.
In peace time -one adapts routines, hours worked.
This is war.

Clarke has baked for 18 months now -its men gradually cutting little corners here, dropping procedures there.
Today -free from flight time, Nakamura takes a walk.

Its a long walk -very long, and by its end he will be sweat soaked, sore, and slightly breathless.
But he walks the entire base -around its strips, casually greeting gun pit crews, sharing cigarrettes and smiles -while sharp eyes and sharper brain meticously catalogues , files, and disseminates.

he visits the workshops, the galley, the medical rooms -6 patients,93 rookies banged up trying to taxi, or land the KI-44 -(still as unforgiving as ever fools at the controls).

he notes the laundry, the intelligence cell, the mess.

Clarke is quiet in the baking heat, her men go about their business as ever -casually, slowly.
life is good at clarke.

Good. Soft. A fertile field breeding disaster.
Nakamura sees it all.

Retires to his office.

The Thunderclouds leave the mountain -and for an hour or so, the storm over clarke tries its worse.
But Mother nature has nothing on the Storm brewing in a particular office..................

On the Bridge of the Mushia

Yamato reads todays dispatches , he stands still and erect, quietly assembling the reports into some sort of coherent picture in his mind.

Port blair
3 cv? -all british. A R class battleship, some cruisers.
And a stalled invasion. Again.

His battlefleet, the old battlewagons
Still functional -a bonus -he had expected them to be expended in those battles.
The British must be low on ammo though -must be.
Had to be.

An opportunity becons..............

The solomons.
A grunt of satisfaction escapes him - port moresby - another stalled invasion?
maybe -maybe not.
But the airforce was finished there - that was obvious. that would require careful planning.

"To 44 admiral, to 44" Iwaya had promised him.
it would be a near run thing, the production to loss race.

Munda about to fall. Bouganville under attack.
He had to delay, delay, delay.

Reports finished, he turns to the task at hand
below him, the great , great guns are trained to port.
Ahead -another moving mountain, points her guns to port as well.
'range?'

"pete on station sir - target at 22 miles"
"very good -you may commence the drill when ready"

Japanese main gunnery had been poor this week. But it would not be on these two ships. Not if he had his way.

Its been pointed out that my spelling of certain japanese Admirals, has been amiss.

This is what happens when you are piss@d

18/8/43

1943 hrs
Air raid warning red!
Deep dusk -and for the first time in many, many months, the siren rings out.
For a moment, the whole base freezes.

Men in the showers, in the mess hall, on the fields, stare frozen for a moment at the speakers -almost unwilling to believe the strident tone of the alarm.
Pandemonium erupts as men burst for the guns, for the slit trenches.
The gun crews, in particular -sprint for the pits. Dozens of minds think the same thought -its almost dark -its almost dark -surely not now!

few remember standing order number 6 -"gun pits are to be fully manned until 2100 hrs, then on 1/3 rotationuntil 0400 hrs"
breathless, the tumble into the pits -the heavier guns slowly being cranked to the heavens, seeking, seeking.
The 25mm pits swing into action quicker -well most do.

There are problems
Lots of problems................

1955 hrs -and the siren cuts out.
A cold, chilling Nakamura speaks across the suddenly quiet field.

'That was a test gentlemen. We are all dead. we will be doing this again............."

Juni reads the orders pinned to the board.
Unbelievable.
Even them?
he's kidding, right?

Apparently not.

"All units will standby for full inspection, 0600 hrs tomorrow."
Inspection will not, repeat not, be allowed to interfere with training routine.

Hurricane Nakamura begins to gather strength

extract from "Shattering the Sword" a Cantona production

The 18th
A day when the British too, finally realise just how hard a cornered japanese force would fight.
Cunningham had promised that there would be no hang ups on His beach, no Majuro's for the British.
The 18th would severly test his promise.
More troops were needed, more troops were landing. And just like the Americans had discovered, covering an invasion with carriers severly limited ones's offensive abilities.
Hanging of port blair -with the location of the Japanese carriers unknown lent tremendous pressure to the troops ashore -Port Blair airfield had to be captured.
Maybe the pressure caused too many corners to be cut, or insufficient planning. Whatever, incriminations would come later.

The attacjk on the 18th was a disaster.
More troops would be needed.
More time had to be bought.

Would the cruisers once again have to fight of the Japanese heavies -or worse?

At port moresby, the fighting raged. Here the Australians and Americans side by side, were beginning the process of winkling out the 65th brigade. It would be a hard battle -but one that everyone knew was going to be won -even the Japanese.
Munda -however, was another story again......................

Hurricane Nakamura moves through Clarke
In other Japanese units, discrepancies, misdeneamors , failures of duty are met with fists and boots, and sheer brutality.
Nakamura uses a far more lethal weapon.

Again, and again, as his probing eyes and mind uncover each glaring example of laxness -he brings the culprit before him.
each and everyone is asked the same question

"What is your duty?"

There is never any need to answer the question.
All know it.

Shame settles over clarke as the sun sets.
To a japanese, to fail in duty - is, is almost unforgivable.
To fail Nakamura, almost as bad.
To fail your comrades - cannot be beared.

Tomorrow, as the sun rises, a new spirit rises with it at clarke.

The frustration, the rage in Miyazuki is barely containable

"Port moresby is about to fall!. What of Lae -did all that blood mean nothing! We should be there - fighting the barsteds instead of bombing bloody partisans!"

It is a fair question.

What in the hell was the high command doing?

He is young, this pilot.

Only 6 months ago abruptly wrenched from his studies at kagoshima university, he finds himself now walking towards his plane.
He is only a small, very small part of the gigantic war machine the empire is wielding -indoctrinated now to the nth degree - he is a human bullet.
Yet his humanity, remains, never quite subdued by the crushing military machine he is emeshed in. He walks to his machine -and is full of wonderment at how things so quickly change.
Two weeks ago he had never seen a KI-44 - now, under the terrible teaching of Juni - he knows he has come a long way.

He settles into the worn, worn cockpit -controls and dials now come easily to him -second nature to him.
Juni has seen to that

he winces at the memories.................

Blindfolded he had sat in the cockpit, still fully aware of the figure standing on the wing. he could smell him -the stale liquor, the sweat.
That figure filled him with terror.
The exercise was simple.
Juni calls out the control, the dial -he reaches it, activates it instantly.

Failure to find it, a fumble, a hesitation equals a blow to the head.

day one -he bled
day two -and his head rang
day three - there were no mistakes day three -a night, hours of practice, and practice and practice, saw to that.

Our rookie sits in his cockpit. it no longer feels strange.
it even begins to feel like home..............

(experience levels for unit going up nicely -once an experience level of 70 reached I will stop training missions -as I think that beyond that its gamey)

Yamamato (spelling correct I hope) ponders the newest signal
He is faced with a great dilemma
At what point do you abandon a plan?
A plan that seems to be going so well?

Another naval clash -this time at Munda
3 CLs, 5 DD -on a fast transport run- an abrupt clash with the Arizona, 2 CA, 2cl and 3 dd

Despite being surprised, his commander had done well. Torpedoes into the Arizona, both CA, a DD
4 dds hurt badly - probable losses on our side
But the troops, mostly, had been delivered -and Munda held
And now todays raids on Port blair - had the British fleet really retired?.
Somehow he doubted it.
But it was possible -a week is a long time to remain on station in front of daily attacks.

The plan is simple -delay, delay, delay.
But now?
Should he consider the unbelievable? - a counterattack!

Flt Hosho has had the strangest of wars.
Flying the KI 57 is a fairly none demanding job -the big birds are gentle, stable, and unlike many japanese planes -almost entirely reliable.
Hosho has spent most of the war in regular runs in the back areas, mostly transporting VIP personal to and from bases all over the pacific -although on one memorable night in China, the passenger had been several very shady fighter pilots, and what appeared to be a very , very large cow. (He'd never gotten to the bottom of that -but the payment had gone a long, long way)

18 Months of service -and he has never been within 500 miles of the enemy, or in any particular danger.
But his desire to fight them,is as strong as any japanese warrior.
Fighting them in an un armed transport, however, is hardly realistic.

But today, they will face the enemy.
Rabual growls to the beat of many, many engines, High Command has been conserving, planning, for just this moment.
Now all depends on courage.

Hosho waddles to his plane. He waddles - for he is almost ridicoulously burdened with many, many items a transport pilot should never have -ration packs, a bloody great knife, and guns - several of them.
His Co pilot bursts into laughter at the sight 'planning our own war Hosho?"

Hosho grins -"Yes -yes I am"

The troops are not smiling.
Many are survivors from the naval battle of only 2 nights ago - their companions are fighting hard on Munda - honour demands they join the fight.
They file aboard -grim, heavily armed. Win, or die.
They will win. Or they will die. It does not matter.

Hosho gets them away - the Taxi ways are narrow, and the Topsys file one after another -he stands in the cabin, guiding his Co pilot verbally - and then the strip is free.

And now the business starts.
The weather over rabual, so clear, so perfect, has turned as it so often does, into the typical mess of rain clouds and mist even before they reach Shortlands. It passes underneath -hopefully -unseen.

A solid grey layer of clouds confront them. A blessing -it might hide them -a curse -it grounds Japanese fighters -and it hides the fields.
They plunge into it -and Hosho eases them down, down to 500 feet -and they break clear -almost on track - the islands lie dark to the left.
Rain envelops them -spattering the shield in its streaks of silver. The bounce, bump across the sky.
Behind them -some one -some ones -vomit. A horrible sound

Then Munda grows ahead.

And the clouds lift -and bright sunshine reveals other transports -ahead, beside them - and smaller, faster shapes.

"Fighters!"
Hosho grits his teeth -"No kidding!"

He banks -skidding around the corner of the island -the field should be there............. -and now the bay is covered in ships - transports -destroyers, smaller craft.
Hell erupts.
tracer -flak -a carpet of explosives all aimed at him!

A terrifying roaring growl bursts behind him, over them -and a great twin shaped fighter blasts past - and his plane -always so compliant in his hand rebels - the left wing drops, and drops - "We are hit! -they are shooting at us!' his Co pilot screams -as if he did not know that.
It happens fast. Cut the port engine -feather it. hard right rudder --getting the flaps out -no time for the cart! -the end of the strip rushes up -and she strikes hard - -her pushes her into the mud -full stick forward -she slides -mud, water, dirt sheet the screen -a tree crashes into the right wing, they fling around -and stop.

Silence
momentary silence
And about them the chatter of machine guns, the whine and crack of rifle fire.
Shouts, screams from the rear -the sblt there taking command..............

Hosho looks the co pilot in the eye - draws a pistol, hands it to him.
"You might need this I think"
Then grinning, Flt Hosho exits the plane -and finally, finally, joins the war..............

Minister for production, Mr Iwaya, reads his reports.

Yamamato has kept his word - he is now amongst the few who really know the situation.
It appears ? on a knife edge -is a term that comes to his mind.

But for whom?

Japan could afford to lose all three battles - eventually
The Allies none.

Port blair - holding not well - but brilliantly -airfield fully functional again -and striking (To have so many transports to burn!)
Munda holding -barely -but holding
And Port Moresby? - 8th Army makes a fight of it, failing Allied attacks today!

Iwaya sips his scotch. Reaches for other reports. Navy shipbuilding ..........................
If the allies don't have anything else up there sleeves - Yamamato might just get to implement his great plan yet..........

Munda airstrip is literally the front line.
Shattered transport planes are scattered all over the field -and a trail of wreckage floats from Shortlands south. But they keep coming. Across the strip - its elite verses elite -para's verses paras. There is grudging respect for the skill of the fight from both sides -The Americans marvel "at the tough little barsteds". The japanese marvel at the organisational skills of their opponents.
But no quarter is given.

At Port Moresby, a lull ensues -but again the transports play a desperate hide and seek against the patrolling fighters.
many lose.

At Port Blair -the troops on both sides, see something that heavily represents the state of the battle.
The Maru is old, she is rusty. But she is undamaged, and undisturbed -she disharges fresh ammunition, food and supplies........

At Clarke -life continues. Nakamura continues to terrify the slack, the lazy, the disorganised.
I use a term he totally would not understand -but might just agree with.

Tojo's tigers -are getting their Mojo back.

Mr Iwaya studies his documents. he notes with satisfaction the latest evaluations of the new Navy fighter. A heavy fighter at last - now if he could only get it into production quicker.
Reading the documents is not easy, the road from Hiroshima to Tokyo is winding, and at times , rough. He should be flying, but apparently for reasons yet to be revealed, there are no transports left available.

His driver hardly helps -barely under 70 -if he is lucky - driving seems to be more a matter of luck than skill at times . Iwaya hopes sincerly that the big dodge is as solid as it feels if it all should go wrong.
The country side is beautiful - how he misses it.
With out warning, his driver pulls over, stops the car -and with out a word, exits, walking quickly down the road.
For a moment Iwaya watches from his back seat , first with wonder , then puzzlement, then rapidly raising alarm.

Another big black car has pulled up in front of him, and 3 Military men, one Navy officer, 2 Army men approach the vehcile.
It happens quickly, the doors open, and RADM Tanaka slides into the seat beside him, the other two men taking post at each door.

Iwaya feels very, very alone, and not a little alarmed at the situation.
"Relax Minister -just here for a Chat" Tanaka smiles. he looks pale, skinny - nature seems not to have been kind to him in the last twelve months.
With an effort, Iwaya manages to convey calm
'A chat?"
"Just a chat. Minister, time is short.'
For a second the Navy man seems to hesitate -measuring him?. then he plunges into the nightmare.........

'Minister -I will be to the point. Do you think we can win this war? -And by winning -I mean Herbiesan bringing the Americans to the negotiating table -and dictating terms in the white house?"

Win? who in the hell thinks that?
"Of course not -but............"
"But Minister?"
"But I do believe we can bring a negotiated settlement -if we can win a decisive battle"
Tanaka smiles -the sort of smile you see a teacher give a child when a child states that Santa clause really does exist -they have seen him.
"How many decisive battles have we already won?"
This -is a thought that he had not considered.
"Ummmmm."
Tanaka presses his point - "And they still keep coming Minister -and they will still keep coming until japan is a wasteland, a land of ashes and tears"

Silence. The cabin of the car seemed suddenly very, very small.

'Your point?"

"Minister - there are many, many of us -Army, Air, Navy -who think that herbiesan must go -we must convince the Emperor to end this war, to speak out, to save japan!"

'And you are trying to enlist me.? -What you speak of is treason!"
'treason? -we speak the truth minister"

truth
Yes -they did speak the truth. But he also believed in Yamamato -that victory was still possible. For Heavens sake -this war had already cost him his son -was that for nothing?

but he speaks the truth

he had to be careful

"You say that there are many of you -what is many?"
"many is enough Minister" Again that smile. he seemed very sure of himself

Iwaya considers the man.
Tanaka -I take your words on advisement. I believe -still -that we can obtain victory -but...."
"But"
"keep me in mind -should things go bad"

Tanaka considers this. "fair enough. there is honour still in you minister -when so many are just here for power. We will keep you in mind then. I trust your silence?"

Out side, the countryside was very, very quiet. the road totally empty. The two Army men both were armed....

"Of course"

It was 20 minutes before the driver returned -as if nothing had happened, as if the last hour had ceased to exist.
For Iwaya -they were a long, long 20 minutes.

Pleasure is all mine -now how to get you off the island -if you survive.

"12 hours notice Gentlemen - standby to deploy at short notice"
Nakamura throws the signal pad onto his desk "I wish the hell I knew where too -that would be help for a start"
Juni laughs -"As if we have ever known Sir"
The Colonel nods his head in weary agreement. "There is that you horrible smelly man -there is that"
he sighs - a long sigh.
"Munda ,Port Blair, the Northern islands, the Gilberts, even Lae -lots of places to chose from"
"I have a good answer to all your woes sir"
"Yes?"
"A good stiff drink"

"Truk it - why not"

History can often turn on such small things.
The nail for the horse shoe -that sort of thing.

Hosogoya leads the Japanese battle line directly into Port Blair -looking for trouble.
Two things happen almost simultanously - o-20, one of the oldest SS still operating in the war, takes a long, long shot -and scores, Battleship Fuso falls out of the line, clearly in trouble.
A British destroyer comes into view under the torrent of starshell fired her way.

The conclusion is immediate - the enemy fleet!.
It is also wrong.

A deluge of shells, and vitally -precious Long lances go out -the british destroyer is shattered in short time.

But that is all the flleet encounters.
Tubes empty -the sea empty -the fleet retires -the british CVs are coming again.
It is a long way to Singapore for refills.....................

BB Fuso grounds herself -she is finished.
1000 men go ashore -the gunnery crews remain.
The battle swings again. Once again the british will dominate the seas and skys over Port Blair.

FLT Hosho swings his gun again.
The bunker is deep, well hidden, and commands the field. It is also muddy, full of excrement, flies, and stink.
But it is also artillery proof.

Hosho stands literally ankle deep in machine gun casings -and once again, the gun chatters.
There is no shortage of Ammo here - and early in the battle Hosho has been given the simplest of orders -let it rip -and keep shooting -if it moves -shoot it.

Some body has apparently forgot to tell him that this is a deadly business as well -it seems to have become an exercise in outwitting, out shooting the vague glimpses and shadows of the paras across the strip.
Its not politically correct, its not the usual picture one would expect -but basically -Hosho is enjoying himself. A life of boring routine, under achievement -but now -here he was -fighting -and doing it well.

his Co pilot stumbles into the dark stink. "here he is"
"Hey Hosho you idiot! -visitor!"
"One moment" -the gun chatters again. "Sh#t -missed again"
He turns from the firing slit - "yes?"

The Sblt is the same one he help deliver here -what -3 days ago.?
"Hq commands all pilots to the North beach -you are leaving friend"
"Leaving -while we are winning?"
The Sblt smiles wanely -winning is not a term he agrees with. He knows the real score. He also knows what happened to the 1000 reinforcements they were depending on.
Drowned -to a man
"Winning or not -someone thinks you fly boys are too valuable to die here in the mud -you are going"

Hosho takes a look at the old, old young man, another look at his gun -the enemy , the field.
Suddenly he can smell the dugout. see the bodies.
"OK - North beach. How do we get there?"
His Co pilot breathes a sigh of relief. For a while there he 'd thought his best friend quite mad.......... 'Thank the Gods -come on Hosho - apparently some one has got a plan for us"

Records for 47th are well preserved for this period
A crash period of training. Then, as the war burst into white hot heat all around the empires perimeter, the change of plans.
Reserves are for the crises.
With operation False Blind building -it was time to commit them
The Crises had come.
Late in the evening of the 24th the word was recieved -and once again, 47th is on the move

Nakamura leads the planes south
Its another impressive gathering -6 sentais strong -200 plus fighters
All his to command.

But his mind is on other things.
Actually, just one thing
Nestled in his hip pocket - a letter.
Anomonous.
"Do you really believe herbiesan can save Japan -or lead her to ruin?
There are many you command -who don't."

They are flying South again
Ahead:
Ocean. Tropical storms. Small isolated strips. Mountains, and then the swarms of the enemy in new, better planes.
He feared them not.
But this letter -it filled him with terror.

extract from Shattering the Sword -a cantona production

Critical days indeed.
The flow of reinforcements had stopped to Munda, Port moresby. The slaughter North of Munda had been shocking, brutal.
But it spelt out the inevitability of these battles. Time would tell.

Losing battleship Revenge sharpened the knifes edge of the battle at port blair even finer. Once again the british CV's dominated the area -returning in just the proverbial Nick of time. Sinking the Fuso raised Moral.

But the problem remained. They could not stay on station forever - and how long could the luck last -Indomitable had alone dodged 50 torpedoes since this battles beginning.
The moment they withdrew all knew that the Japanese would pour in yet more troops -they seemed detirmined to win.
The Cvs were the key

Japan knew it too. For a week Yamamato had resisted the pressure. Now the Army demanded it -do something .
And thus Operation False Blind came into being..................
