Hosho is no longer happy.
12 hours of slogging through the jungle over Munda's spine, in the mud, in the rain, battling the jungle, fatigue -and a nightmare collection of bugs and flying crap -has done more harm to his moral than anything he has ever experienced.

But finally the beach.

I -162 surfaces -her ugly shape breaking the shimmering sea just beyond the reef.
And there is the problem -the shimmering sea. The moon is in full strength tonight - and this is no place for a surfaced submarine.
Hosho is no sailor -he probably impeded the progress of the rubber raft more than helps it -but finally they are scrambling up its side.
A grey figure -his uniform must have been white once -a long, long time ago - views them with barely hidden disgust. 'Just the six of you?"
"yes -for now"
"Truk -all this for just 6 trucking truck drivers"
The grey shape points at a dimly lit hole in the subs casing - "get below -and keep out of the truking way"
Hosho scrambles to the hatch -breathes deep.
'Oh crap" he thinks, nose wrinkling in disgust " it stinks worse than the bunker"

Passengers safely onboard, the black shark slips silently below the waves again - and begins the journey home.

47th sentai island hop to yet another base.
Another long day.
Another strange field, poor facilities, another night of trying to find a place to rest.

They are used to it. Inmurred to it now.
The world again is just them, the transit. A already fading past -a unknown future.

Munda field

Ironically -its Hosho's old bunker that falls first. The paras have a bridgehead across the field. No reinforcements can possibly come now, and the advance cuts the defence into two. The troops fight on -now not to win -but to take as many with them as they can.
The emperor will get his butchers bill in full at Munda.

Extract from Shattering the Sword -a cantona production.

Montgomeries stunning defeat at Tunisia. Rommel triumphant again.
Dieppee -and its disaster
And now Port Blair

The Japanese are coming. Everyone can see it. Intelligence has up to 6 divisions at sea -somewhere. The fleet is at sea -somewhere.
The Japanese are coming. Another Majuro seems in the offering -daily now they get stronger as the attack gets weaker

Today the parliment launches its no confidence motion against Churchill -and the debate rages deep into the night.
Then like a thunderbolt -the Japanese demand.
Surrender - give up.
They judge allied moral as brocken. They judge the supreme commander Cantona brocken.
The demand arrives at the hieght of the debate.
How will he react?
How will churchill respond?

Parliament was setlled to a hush as Winston Churchill took the podium and delivered the most important speech in his career and perhaps the most important in the history of the British Empire. The gist of it was simple. The setback in North Africa was not as serious as first thought and the 3rd Battle of El Alemain was about to start. The Red Army advanced westwards after thwarting the German Panzers at Kursk. America was ascendant in the Pacific and as to India and the Indian Ocean, the message was simple, 'We shall never surrender, let the Japanese send their men and ships against us and we shall pin them down and let the Americans kick in the back door. Britons, it is time to take our place in History and if this be our sun set, let it be the most radiant ever. Democracy and freedom shall shine the brighter as we banish the darkness back into the shadows!"

A stunned House, was silent for a minute then raptuous applause broke out, even Churchill's biggest dissenters did not doubt that the old buggar had a knack for the theatrical and the ability to motivate and seek hope where little was afforded.

Mr Iwaya works.
behind him, in the quiet of the room, here in the middle of the night, the radio plays Churchills speach.

Iwaya works -and eyes his glass of port. Churchill rings out his final defiant stanza .
'I never expected less" thinks Iwaya -and raises his glas in a silent salute.

Then he bows his head again -and returns to his work -still detirmined as ever to see that sun set.

Hosho clambers stiffly ashore -at least a proper boat this time.
He is greeted by a few friends - his transport unit has retired here to rebuild.
"I'm starving, in need of a bath -and a drink my friends"
The welcoming grins fade some what.
"a bath yes, a drink yes -a meal -well -half rations Im afraid -the boat failed to come in it appears"
"That bad?'
'That bad"

Suddenly the stink of I-162 did not seem so bad

47th arrive in their new home.
Nakamura's comand has scattered into the surrounding area -a sentai here, another there. For the moment it appears the war is still some way away. They have however allowed the release of navy units -they quickly deprt -leaving them to make yet another place home.

This field -is a hole. A malaria ridden armpit of a place. To Nakamura's dismay, everything is in short supply.
Fuel, ammunition, spares. Even the rations are on the edge -much has been promised lately -little has arrived -swallowed up by the war in the west.

47th are used to it though.

The young and in experienced explore the crude accomodation, the cruder mess, the ready room.
The experienced locate the slit trenches, and deepest bunkers...............

from Nakamura's diary

..............and so, in far too short a time, we found ourselves heading back to the war.. How things had changed for the 47th!
too many fresh young faces -names i could never remember -and so few hard bitten ones -the veterens i depended on so much.
There would be no more Nakamura knife attacks with this group -that would be beyond them. I needed new tactics -ones that required more courage than skill.
The germans I knew -were using head on attacks -was that a possibility?
Level flight -little manouvering -a good chance of escape -but not such a good chance of a hit -but then -hits would be lethal.
I decided that this was how we would tackle the bombers the next time we met.
I had no answer in my mind now for the new allied fighter - we would just have to do our best -a thought that filled me with trepidation for those youngsters of mine.

But the letter overode it all.
I had never, ever really considered the possibility of defeat. it never occured to me -for a warrior, a bushido warrior -unthinkable!
but to fly into battle -knowing that some one -maybe your very wingman - no longer believed.............

Most mornings now, Juni greets in a fog of a hangover. There is little new in the world, and no briefing he can't grasp in a matter of moments -he has heard of every possible permutation.
Today -rarely -he is sober.
But the day still promises the same.
Pre dawn -and the waking shake - the shambles of trying to wash, dress, gather something to eat.
Wandering over to the briefing hut -here just a crude palm tree lean too.
Nakamura has little to say -it will be a CAP day -only in low numbers - piority to those yet to orientate to the new area.

Few, if any Allied planes have been sighted here -although theoretically they are in range.
Juni flies today -more for a desire to escape the heat and humidity of the field than anything -if he is going to be stupifyingly bored, better in the air than on the ground.

He wanders out to his plane, a new ground crew -no time to meet them yet -fusses around her.
More out of a desire to show the crew that he really is a serious pilot -really -he begins a quick pre flight walk around her.

Good old 67

And probably for the first time in months and months -he really sees her.
You and I are probably all familiar with the feeling. That special new car -that one that really, really caught your heart. That feeling Im afraid mostly only men know. That car that you really look after, fret over.
You keep it for years -well beyond the point when you really should have traded it -and then one day -it just strikes you.

Maybe its the door that doesn't lock properly -or the mirror that fell off that you should have replaced. Maybe it won't start -again. maybe your Wife mentions for the 100th time -that the new little compact would be so much better.
But it happens. One day -all of a sudden. I need a new car.

Juni walks around good old 67 -and now the faults glare at him. The little dints. those couple of raised rivets.
The oil streaks from the engine bay. The dull patches from days when it seemed she would not get you home.
The crazed canopy - the dirty, worn cockpit.
Three brocken guages today.
A cracked flap handle.
Juni feels it. Crap - 67 is a flying disaster. Time for a new plane.

She starts willingly enough -and today she won't -as she never has, let him down.
But Juni is right. He needs a new plane
Japan needs new planes. A lot of them.
Of course we know -this is the tragedy - there are no real new ones to come -not for 47th -not for a long time yet.

To the south -over Port moresby - The Thunderbolts, the hellcats, the corsairs, the P40n's, a never ending stream of new planes -continue to blast the grim defenders.

Flt Hosho goes back to work - his unit evacuating no longer needed aviation personal from bases now totally under allied air control.
He will soon wish himself back in the bunker -these flights are long, and Mother nature is going to try very hard to kill him.

In Burma -japan launches a small offensive -testing the waters to the North of mandalaby - it does not go well.
(Nobody will hear of this blunder though)

Munda field falls.
The battle for the solomons changes shape drastically.

And 47th sentai stand down -again on orders to be prepared to move at short notice

Captain Umeya again scans the seas ahead of him.
His little ship is bouncing heavily in the growing Indian ocean swell -and focussing the glasses is no easy task.
Somewhere ahead - just over the horizon, the bulk of the fleet he needs to join too sails - and a quiver of excitement passes through him.

For a year now, CVL Hosho has ploughed steadily at her work -endless plodding with the fat tankers between Palemabang and home. Endless days of putting up 3 kates, 3 zeros a day, of getting them down again
Her record is excellent -not a single tanker, or a single plane lost under his command.

But now they steam to possible battle. The enemy CV's have been spotted to the North -lurking, lurking -and at last, hosho may get to play her part in glory.
It will cost - probably his ship -certaintly many of these pilots he has gotten to know so well over so much time.
Yet he raises his glasses again -and hopes, and hopes that the enemy come.

Nakamura recieves word at dawn

deploy to rabual

They have done this journey before -dared the trip along the PNG North coast. dared the Jungle, the sea, the mist, the storms.
They dare again -and head south. once they travelled as a single sentai -today -as many.
The Navy calls them to rabual. Big things are afoot.

"Enemy CV's -many ships, sighted south of majuro..................."

ADM Hosogaya turns to his commander -nods at the signal on the flimsy - the Americans appear to be on the move at last......

"And?" he asks

The Admirals face remains impassive as ever. "predictable"
"Your orders then?"

"We stick with the plan"

Good enough. Hosogaya returns to his work. There is a fleet to manage.

Miyazuki climbs wearily from his cockpit.
The flight -as promised, had been a nightmare. Nobody will bring up the topic, but all know -there are faces missing. Again men have vanished and died with out seeing the enemy. The common enemy -mother nature -has claimed another.

Rabual -still the great bastion of the south west pacific -is a bee hive.
With Munda fallen, and Port moresby barely hanging on, rabual must surely soon come under attack. All around the harbour, small detachments of men are gathered -orphans from the battles south. They hope to be the lucky ones - waiting to be shipped out north -even -dare they hope it -shipped home to rebuild the units they belong to.
But to do this, the Navy needs a base.
Rabual has to be held.

Miyazuki barely reaches the ground -and already the ground crews are throwing fuel into his tanks. Nakamura comes over, face shining with sweat -weariness too on his face.
"Combat air patrol -get in the air ASAP!" he snaps -and he is gone, repeating the message plane after plane.

Combat patrol? Now? With legs numb, and senses assualted?
He looks around. Guns point at the sky -the base seems calm, undamaged.
Combat patrol?
A pack of zeros blast overhead, gaining hieght quickly -they disapear to the north.

A ground man comes up, salutes
"Your plane is ready sir!'

OK. So thats how it is. Looks like rabual means business too.
"very good"

He shows no sign of weakness -just a detirmination (which he does not feel), climbs back into his little torture chamber
he flies -and hopes like hell the enemy will wait until tomorrow at least.

47th deploy to rabual -2 other KI-44 sentais join them. Ki-43's,, medium bombers also occupy the base.
The navy fighters depart.

Nakamura's orders are simple
keep rabual open as long as he can.

On the bridge of the Hosho

Captain Umeya watches the signal lamp fromthe flagship -its message is long, and complicated.
he can, of course, read the morse -but protocol and all that
'Signal from Flagship sir!"
'read it'

" All ships Execute plan blind draw, operation commence immediately - good luck"

Umeya wanders to the voice tubes, he is outwardly calm, inwardly a ball of excitement
'Engine room - bring all boilers to full steam!"
Then to the XO 'Ex - inform the galley - i want a special meal for tonight'

He considers the ocean, the mass of ships about him.
was there anything he had forgotten, anything else he could do?
No.
they are ready.
Now its up to the lap of the gods of war

It is raining. nothing to comment on -this is the tropics of course. Its not even particularily heavy. it just continues today, and continues, and continues.
Rabual sits in stinking grey gloom -the rain brings niether coolness or any relief.
It just helps the feeling of oppression

Nakamura calls the men just before dusk -they crowd the palm lined building, and struggle to hear his voice over the sounds of the rain -a million little water falls.

His face is hard -white today -impassive.

"Port Moresby has fallen. You all know what that means"

There is no need for anything else.
Hell will soon be upon them.

Rabual is calm today -47th and all the sentais shake themselves down quickly -the CAP is established, the comms to the outposts checked, the radar tested again
Tha Navy continues to ferry men about -it seems hardly an hour passes today without a ship leaving or entering -and the base itself is bustling.

The memory of rangoon still lingers in many minds -and its hard to convey the power of the allied forces building to the south to the men who have been here for so long.
maybe its blind faith in the Empire -or a refusal to face facts -but for many here in the last quarter of 43 -the war is as it has ever been -Japan triumphant -an empire of a million years.
Lunga, Munda, now Port Moresby - set backs, minor setbacks.
The fleet will be back -and they would be re taken.
It was as simple as that.
Even the most optimistic could see that blooding the British nose came first, the fleet would come - Port Blair -then Port moresby.
You see. You just wait and see.

The men of Nakamura's group know better.
They pick their bunkers, , strengthen the slit trenches. They check the AA guns again.
And they watch the sky -the gathering storm clouds - and wait.

Dusk
CVL Hosho turns into the wind, and the last of here zeros is safely -if not awkwardly brought back onboard.
Captain Umeya cannot believe their luck. Only one lost, and that pilot saved.
Only one lost.

"Officer of the Watch!"
"Sir!"
'You have the con - get us to the rendevou -full speed, Im going below"

The ready room of the Hosho is a joke. Some modern houses have bigger bathrooms than the smelly tattered steel shell these pilots have used -usually a cold, uncaring room, now it is full of laughter, excitement , flushed faces -and nearly a dozen voices all talking loudly at once.
The Captain is met with a great cheer as he enters the room -and excitably they gather around him -each in overwhelming need to recount tales of their battles over port blair.

Umeya swells with pride -and why not?
These few men have fought all day above the troop convoy -they have tackled the new corsairs, hellcats, and the big bombers.
Only 3 transports hit -and all the troops ashore.

"What now captain -more of the same tomorrow?"
"No"
"What! "-a dozen faces become incredulous
he holds up his hands -"steady men. here is the dope -The Navy has done its job -a full division landed. There are heavy bombers acting all over the bay -our little friend Unyo managed to dodge them today -tomorrow, well we may not be so lucky."
"So thats it? -the pilots voice is heavy with disa pointment -'one moment of glory -and now its back to the endless circling of sheep?"
Captain Umeya is able to smile at that.

'lets see -if today hasn't shown our esteemed Admirals that us little guys are useful, nothing would."
He pulls out a signal from his pocket -flourishes it dramatically
From Combined Fleet"

extract from Shattering the Sword -a cantona production

from the Imperial fleets viewpoint - operation Blind draw was an outstanding success.
Given the task of getting a convoy through to port blair Yamamato could only rely upon one weapon -the carrier fleet.
But the carrier fleet was not available - it was as we now know -busy elsewhere -operation SHO GO 1, and its preperations.

Thus he turned to the only other thing he had -subterfuge.
Effectively CVL Hosho -and 3 old battleships would become "The fleet" -filling the air with signals, and showing carrier planes over Port blair. The two 2 CVE would be used to add to the picture, and hopefully interupt any convoys to the North of port blair.

Luck played a huge part - the 2 CVE effectively hidden from the british carriers by the storms - "the Fleet" similarily hidden -but the planes not so over Port blair.

The British -wary of Japanese LBA - and of whatever was to the south -simply could not risk battle -they struck on the 13th at the convoy -but struck essentially too late.
The japanese CVE sink a CA, cripple another - a good return for the incredible risk taken.
faced with what appears to be overwhelming forces, the british take the prudent course.
Retiring to the north on the 14th, they allow the Japanese to disengage, battle effectively over.

Battle effectively over at sea, but on the island itself - disaster for the Japanese. Emboldened by the reinforcements -supremely confident of their positions -the japanese army attacks during the night of the 14th -and is shattered.

Churchill was right. Only a week ago - all portended disaster. Once again, the hero of the empire -the common cocknee soldier -the poor bloody infantryu -pull the chestnuts out of the fire.
The japanese were NOT going to be able to kick them of this island. Not now.

Both sides now have much to think about....................

(PS -is Cantona updating his AAR -some one hint to him herbie would love to read about his view of this one day)

Something quite incredible has happened to 47th sentai today.
They have been paid.
How the Army has kept track of them is beyond him - but miricles do happen.
It is very early in the morning, Juni has hitched a lift into Rabual proper -and now he seeking out essentals.
A sewing kit
A razor,
Booze -not so essential -and still easier to find then the first two items
Writing materials, and a new sleeping mat.

Then -he has heard rumours, that a good supply of seafood is still available here -and for a price -the Lobster are something to get.

Whatever -it is again simply good, to get into a town -to mingle - to look, to be human for a while.
Passing one of the inumerable bars, he has to take quick avoiding action, as half a dozen soldiers erupt from its darkness. They are happy, they are drunk. they are detirmined to tell everyone why they are happy, and why they are drunk -and why everyone -Juni included -should join them in their happiness..

Juni recongnises them -marines -paras from the 4th maizaru unit. They have seen tough fighting, munda -and lunga.
For a few minutes Juni balances between offending them (flying this morning -accepting a drink now would be very, very bad) -and sharing their joy.

they are going home
'See that big sucker in the harbour -the one with the 2 red funnels" the soldier grins " that my friend -is heaven"

Juni feels a stab of jealosy. but then -these men have earn't it.

he fibnally manages to peel away from them -and continue on.
He even does find a lobster.

1400
Juni peels to his right -the controls steady, the air calm.

There was no mistaking it -a submarine had struck
The engine noise fills his world -obliterating it.
He needs it to

Below, alone on the shimmering sea -rabual still clear behind them - the great ship -her two red funnels lying in the sea - pauses for her final plunge.

From 200 feet, juni circles -helpless -watching the men swarm over her sides.
The engine noise fills his world

Nakamura conducts an inspection of rabuals AA defences -he is less than impressed

Juni flies CAP, returns, gets drunk

Miyazuki too flys CAP, returns, loses at cards, gets into a fight -loses that too

His younger brother drills on his AA gun, and watches the destroyers steam past -they, the lucky barsteds, get to see action

Hosho dodges bombs at kavieg - and frets over the maintenance to his plane

Mr Iwaya inspects a factory, sacks a manager, takes a bribe, and he too frets over the falling production figures.

Captain Umeya guides the CVL Hosho through dangerous waters -and nurses a very sore head

ADM Yamamato too inspects things -and interviews captains destined for new shipping

Hyakutakes sister in Hiroshima finishes another interminable day over her lathe

Major Hashimoto, commander of forces Kwaljien, dudts himself of yet again. The great bunker is beginning to look a little battered now................

Gen Nobe -, 4th regiment, Miyrintyka?-Burma, cuts his mens rations -again

And Captain Jones - in Big betty 3 -completes another milk run against majuro.

Its another day of the war.

(PS -is Cantona updating his AAR -some one hint to him herbie would love to read about his view of this one day)

Sadly it appears as though it has been abandoned.

I know he reads this AAR, so please, Cantona, start updating again, in the style you started out with. Lots of maps and straight up strategy talk.

Heavy scattered cloud covers the general area over Rabual. great white fluffy mointains moving steadily with the latest weather front, with patches of blue about them.
Perfect hunting weather for a fighter pilot.

Juni and Miyazuki walk out to their planes, there is little conversation. Juni "is in a mood" -to every one he has put up the shutters -he sits for hours on the mess veranda -brooding at the harbour.
They recieve a surprise on arrival at the planes - today they arr not polished smooth - covered in a fine grey ash.
"What is thes crap?" Miyazuki bristles at the ground crew.
The corporal merely smiles -and points at the great hill behind them- "She's active"
Miyazuki turns -and now he notices -the great volcano dominating Rabual is steadily belching into the sky -an unsettling sight -almost unnatural in his eyes.
Juni breaks his silence - 'just don't fly into that muck -it'll bring you down like a stone"

A volcano eh?. Its a funny thing Miyazuki thinks -Japan is full of them, and here I am half way across the globe before I see one.

The take off -the patrol goes as normal -9 fighters sweeping the area to the south of the harbour -patiently waiting for whatever comes their way.
The hour ticks by -boring, boring, boring. Fuel burns, the engine assualts the senses, the world vibrates -the neck turns, and turns, and turns.
Juni leads them east -out over the ocean, he has a hunch.

It pays off

Having hit Kavieng, the great Liberators are taking a great detour around Rabual, the weather however, is playing havoc with the formation -and now its more of a stream of planes heading south.

Its one of the younger eyes that see them first -small dots against the great sheet of white - moving in an intercept across the patrols bow. His excited shout of Bogies! -shatters many a revere -and sends excitement racing through a dozen or so bodies.

Juni sswings hard, banking vertical -straightening out, his pack following.
"Attack, Attack! Attack"
They come in from the forward starboard quarter of the leading bomber -a good position - the front turret at full deflection, the upper unable to engage them under the wing and engine -the side guns too hampered by the bombers own great bulk.

As the target grows, and grow, Juni begins to bank -sweeping in to the attack - he feels not cold today -the hate burns too bright -but glad, glad that once again they can spray death at the great beasts.

Its a savage pass - close, close, terrifyingly close -the bomber crew can hear Junis engine scream even above the bedlam of their engines -the shattering bangs of impact -the scream of the dieing man -and he blasts past, diving down under the revenging fire of the rear gunner, inverted, rolling, stick into stomach, , hard right rudder, screwing his machine, him, into position for the second great barsted -and the cordite stinks, the guns hammer, the beast flashes underneath, guns empty, and he dives away, fuel now dangerously low, and who cares -he has bitten deep, deep, deep as the sea, you barsteds -take that -go into the ocean!

The great bombers -as usual -do not go down -they race south still -some smoking, one yawing all over the sky -but the fuel is gone -and satisfied, the fighters return towards Rabual

Nakamura listens to the debrief with interest -why kavieng? Why not here?
Never mind -its not worth the effort -the enemy will do what the enemy will do.
What matters is 47th have re entered the war -some new comers have blooded, and no planes have been lost.

Behind them the Volcano rumbles, and if you concentrate very, very carefully -the ground is ever so slightly shaking.
Its a wierd feeling. Definately unsettling.
'One would think a giant is striding the earth" he thinks.

Nakamura is not far from the truth................
