Shortlands is no decoy - as the night proceeds the troops begin to pour ashore.
For the troops of the Americal division in particular, there is a very pleasant surprise. All have landed expecting the usual forest of interlinking bunkers, of dug in enemy troops, of endless fortifications.

They encounter some hastily dug trenches, a few sandbags, and that is all. The Commander of Shortlands has concentrated on the airstrip,, and never even considered that the enemy would dare land here -here in the teeth of rabuals air power.

But land they have -and rabuals teeth prove very toothless indeed today.
Only the KI 43's of 50th sentai -the disgraced sentai -have the range to reach the battle - and today they cover themselves in inglorious failure.

Bombers and fighters fail to rendevou.
3/4 of the fighters take a mere 6 bombers -to Munda!
The day becomes a shamble of unescorted trickle strikes, of fighters turning away in the face of the P38's.
No hits -not a single one, is achieved.

Fully anticipating massive suppression strikes against rabual, Nakamura has kept his sentais aloft over rabual -they finish the day frustrated, tired -none more so than their leader, who has flown all day as well.
It has been a mistake - he knows that now -a firm hand should have remained on the ground.
Now, now as Shortlands begins to fight for its life, he has an almost unbelievable crises to deal with .

Fingers have been pointed. Words exchanged. Blows struck. Whatever co operation the Army flyers may have had with the Navy -has been destroyed. Tomorrow -unless he can pull a miricle -no bombers are going to fly -"not with those Truking 50th buka's we are not!"

Weary, tired, almost dispirited, Nakamura wonders how in the hell Japan can fight a war like this - and then, as dusk covers the disaster, it gets worse.
In line ahead, serene, unperturbed by mere politics -the fleet begins to sail into the harbour...................

Yamamoto reads the reports
Shortlands -2 divisions so far, more troops coming. 4 naval guard units to defend.
Another struggle ahead, another inevitable result .............

Expected, accepted.
This attack would cause no sleepless nights. But his intelligence reports speak of dozens of these new ships -LST's -pouring into the war - AND NOT A SINGLE ONE committed.

And nary a hint of a Carrier for a month or more now.
Now this would give him many a sleepless night.

Hosho arrives at Haipong

If tanaka is seeking discontent, he is not going to find it here.

For weeks now the small numbers of Oscars, and zeros here have been fighting an almost private war with an equally small number of T bolts and P40's over this field.

Its almost a gentlemans agreement -they come over -both sides engage in a genuine dogfight -they go home.
Fighter pilot heaven.
The fact that few people are getting hurt adds to the mix.

Hosho sees to his aircraft, the Admiral catches up on sleep, and they prepare to move on, on this great"inspection of the munitions situation"

Tomorrow, Victoria point -and the great stand off of Port blair

A day of anti climax - the CAP is aggressively kept in the air - the allied Recon spots the new ships in the harbour - and yet nothing happens
Enemy troops are still landing at Shortlands -it begins to shape up as another drawn out struggle..............

Hosho guides the transport south, south down the Malaya peninsula.
They have been to bangkok, and here he has been given a glimpse of what Tanaka may be on about.

The field there is home for the 55th fighter, KI-61's
For Months now all of Japan has been fed the story of this sentia's magnificant defence of moulimien -of endless victories over the allied attack.
The reality is very, very different.
Scattered around the field, dozens and dozens of tattered, worn out fighters. many, many are patently un airworthy -and its plain many should long ago have been scrapped.
But what he found in the mess, was far, far worse.

Worn out, exhausted?. No -these men had been far, far deeper than that.
These were men who had been in the tunnel a long, long time -and now knew -there was no end, no light at its end.
One, one of them -a commander, a bushido warrior once - had said it all.

"They keep coming my friend -they keep coming -and there is no way to stop them"

Extract from Shattering the Sword -a Cantona production.

and as the japanese bombers from Rabual again failed to impact on the allied landings at shortlands, Allied plans could turn to the next operation.

It was on this day that a seminal moment of the war passed by -one that would set the scene for the bulk of October and November.
Buried amongst the now mountanous pile of intercepted signals the allies were decoding, was a small signal from Combined fleet HQ to the Imperial HQ
"Activate Carrier battle groups 1,2, 3, 4"

Yamamoto, and Mr Iwaya, were about to lay the cards on the table -and bet all on a single hand....................

We have said it a few times now, and we have to repeat it again.
The air in the war takes place -in the air. Obvious? - look out your window. What do you see today?. Clear sky, snow, grey clouds, scattered clouds. Whatever you see -its probably different 350 miles away.
Whatever you see -remember -our men are flying in it, flying in it, fighting in it, dying in it.

Today this cursed weather impacts the battles for Shortlands immensly.
Rabual is clear -but as the strikes head south, the weather steadily closes in -low heavy rain showers, bases at 1000 feet -heads at 5 to 8000. Scattered clear patches.
Then, as Shortlands appear -a break -clear skies -and then (if you were mad enough to fly further south), another mucky area, with Munda a frustrating mix of light rain, and heavy mist.

The effects of this weather is dramatic.
Nakamura launches his strikes -he has mashed heads -but bowed to the enivitable -zero's escort the betties, oscars the helens -and they have gone in the usual impressive package of massed power.

What has arrived at shortlands is a mess
The first raid bursts into the sunshine almost directly over the packed shipping - 17 zeros, 6 bettys, and 18 helens
The LRCAP from Munda though also is having problems -20 fighters of mixed variety, t bolts, 38's, corsairs.

It happens quickly -several zeros, several bombers go down -a AK is hit

Then the late comers come -some take advantage of the weather -others -probably the less skilled, are hampered by it.
3 betty gain total surprise on a CL - appearing low and hard almost at the last moment - and the CL is put out of action.

Other raids are intercepted well out -and driven completely away.

The day see's Nakamura surveying what remains of his bombers -the Navy units are wrecked -the Army bombers have suffered a little less.
The attacks must continue. For the Commander of 8th army here, the writing is on the wall. There will be no shattering of this landing - at the moment the defenders of Shortlands hold , for how long is another matter.

Extract from Nakamura's diary

.ironically moral was sky high -almost like the heady days in China.
Our Tigers prowl the skies above Rabual, and apparently -rule the sky -none daring to interfere with the workings of the harbour. I think this is a mistake -but I will take what ever is given. I am juggling a million missions -LRCAP for the Navy, defending here -and trying my damndest to hit Shortlands - a process of throwing snowballs into a furnace I think.

I look today at my men - so many young faces - they grin constantly -and the mess fills with excited tales of the combat south every night -and you see them devouring it with their eyes..

But I keep thinking of Rangoon -how powerful we appeared there -and of how quickly we were brocken.
If Shortlands fall -is this place tenable?
How many of these young faces will be no more?

The light cruiser vibrated insanely as her ancient yet still powerful engines drive her steadily home.
Behind her, 2 other cruisers, a good half dozen destroyers. Overhead fighters prowl -a good sign -rabual has kept its word.

Dozens of pairs of eyes stare intently all around -today the sea is mirror calm -the prowling submarines that plague these waters will be at a disadvantage at least.

yet again the Captain raises his glasses -makes another sweep - this is the biggest formation to sail in these waters for a month or more - a heavy, heavy responsibility -but so far, all goes well -very, very well.
A slight breeze comes from astern -and he catches his navigators eye -and cannot help smile at the grimace the young Sblt makes.
The stink from the deck is -yes, well, overpowering. But stinks can be washed away.
The Captain looks over the bridge wing coaming -at the packed grey, brown, black, and semi naked mass of wretched humanity packed into every inch of his cruiser.
Stinks can be washed away - but it will take a lot more than a bath to restore these shattered survivors from Port Moresby to health.
One of the soldiers below -young, face a cavern of collapsed starving flesh -catches his eye. The face breaks out into a gigantic smile, and a weary , weary hand rises -and gives a thumbs up.
The men of 65th brigade, survivors of port moresby, may be pysically brocken -but their spirit is not.

Juni sits alone on the end of the pier.
The harbour is empty today of all the navy ships, busy somewhere unknown.

Juni sits, and thinks of the water, and for a while, of his Father in its cold embrace somewhere.
He thinks of his Brother, he thinks of a family he no longer has.

He thinks of those who started this war with him -that mad clown Hyakutake, the rest.
He thinks about Miyazuki -and how he cannot stand that coward anymore.
He thinks of Nakamura -of how he keeps them endlessly circling around this goddam awful mountain day after day -and sends others to the fight.
He thinks , and knows -he is utterly alone.

But he is not alone. he still has a family. he is the father to it now. The Tigers. So many young cubs in it.
And he still has Japan. Still has home.
His cubs still have a home.
He has vowed for weeks to ram the first bomber he can -to end it all.
But none have come.
Some men join him -they bring fishing poles for heavens sake -and he recongnises them -cubs from the 47th. They nod warily at him -at the old man of the unit.

decision.

he looks at the water, at the sky

he will live then, do his best.

he smiles -obviously unexpectantly to his fellow pilots " Guys -you will never catch anything with a rig like that -here, let me show you................"

The reports of shipping at Shortlands is confusing. It is also totally unsettling. Reports of "dozens upon dozens" of ships seemingly, unbelievingly, are true. How many ships do the allies have? Do they churn them out like cars or something?
Nevertheless - they have to be stopped.

Try to stop them Rabual does -and it really is like Nakamura thinks -throwing snowballs into a furnace.
There are probably less than 20 Allied fighters over Shortlands at a time - but there are enough.
What attacks go south are mainly brocken up - a single hit is claimed -but the cost is high.
Nakamura faces facts -and calls a halt to tomorrows planned actions - the bombers need to catch their breath..

And for the 1000th time -the question is asked -where is the bloody navy!

From
MR Iwaya, Minister of production
to
ADM Yamamoto

Sir,
As agreed by us on the 12 December 1941, I have been charged to "Build me a replacement Mobile fleet by 1 Jan 1944".
My friend -its been a huge gamble -but partially through luck, your skill, and the ruthless application of piority building, the final basin trials and acceptance trials for CV's Taiho, Katsaguri,Aso and Ikoma will be completed by October 20th.

With repairs to Hiryu and Soryu also completed, and the conversion of Chitose and Chiyoda, I present to you a fleet of 13 fleet carriers, and 8 CVL's.
Please do not be afraid to break them -if it takes out the Americans with them.
But be aware -the kitty is now bare.
I agree with you -SHO GO 1 -will HAVE to be -all or nothing.

Your friend
MR IWAYA

(I accelerated all CV production, converted most merchant yards to naval -day one. ALL CVs except Shimano will soon be built. i am revealling this so that those following Cantona's AAR have a new perspective on what lurks out there. Next month could be a doozie!)

The Allies make their first thrust at Shortlands - and just for once, the poor bloody infantry find themselves fighting in a swift moving advance. There are no impenetrable bunkers, no hidden traps, no deadly clear areas swept by hidden machine guns - just a steady stream of skirmishes, and an advance that continues steadily all day.

Shortlands will soon fall.

Overhead the snarl and scream of classic dogfights - Nakamura sends the Tonies south - they tangle with the big T bolts and swift P38's -and provide a noisy sympony to the clash below.
Planes fall on both sides, of these though, Nakamura has more than he needs -and pilots keen to try their hand as well.

Rabual fills with ships again -65th Brigade lies smashed and helpless at Buna, the navy is committed to get them out.
Nakamura can read the writing on the wall -when Shortlands fall, rabual will come under intolerable pressure.
But the Navy needs rabual -needs the huge storage tanks of fuel buried in the hills, the mountains of supplies scattered in the jungles.
And the Army too -it has many units it wishes to move through its secure port.
So Nakamura knows it is coming. The call -"defend at all costs"

He sends the bombers North -he needs every inch of real estate for his fighters.
Tojo's tigers are being pushed into a corner - but their claws are still sharp.

Order of the day.

1/ Shortlands has fallen
2/ This base must shortly come under sustained attack –the enemy must deny rabual to us to have any hope of furthering its advance
3/ We are numerous in numbers, superior in spirit. We will defeat the enemy, and lead the way for the counter offensive.
4/ When the enemy come –attack him with vigour, let no plane land with out empty guns
5/ This war is coming to a climax –I intend 47th to feature heavily in our final victory
6/ The enemy are afraid to die – it is our duty –and this will give us victory.
7/ The Empire shall live a million years.

Colonel Nakamura

30/9/43

Extract from Shattering the Sword –a Cantona production.

……..researching the battle logs of the first carrier fleet for this period of the war, this author has found a series of intelligence reports and signals that shine a bright light indeed on the mindset of japans high command.

It can be summed up simply – confusion.
During the period 24th to 30th, a sustained recon effort of the remote port of broome had been sustained – a particularly nasty business –costing several of the big Emily flying boats. For 4 days reports had been vague, fighters succeeding in keeping the big boats well clear of the port, but on the 30th, in heavy, heavy weather, a clear pass over the harbour was achieved.

It sends, by all indications, a shock wave through the Japanese high command –the harbour is reported packed with shipping –including the missing LST’s.
Its almost amusing to read the signal traffic- the carrier divisions in Osaka raise steam, only to cancel hours later.

It is obvious -now –to see what is going on. Four new carriers arriving in 14 days, boosting battle strength to the full strength dreamed of for SHO GO 1.
Should they wait for them –or sail now?
Are the ships at Broome an invasion fleet?
Or just a convoy?

In the end, Yamamoto apparently compromises. The light carriers, the old battlewagons at Soerabaya are ordered south, ‘to drag their coat tails”
SHO GO 1 is aimed directly at bringing the enemy carriers to battle –the fleet proper remains in Japan until they are flushed out..
We know now whet lies ahead – history is wonderful in hindsight – but its nearly impossible to convey the tension at high command –for Japan – these would be a very long 2 weeks indeed.

30/9/43

Raffles

Raffles Singapore.
What does this word convey to you? This Author, many, many years ago spent 2 delightful weeks encamped beside one of its bars, slipping occasionally into its cool pools –his every need attended to by an army of silent, yet smiling waiters.
A little world in a world – (before the “renovations” destroyed it all), where, if you have money, you can have anything.

Hosho cannot believe his luck. Tanaka has set up shop here –thrown him a wad of cash –and told him “hang around, watch and report”
Hosho knows exactly what that means. Be a filter before the boss. Let those who are “in” –in. Those who might oppose – well, they have nothing to see here, right?.
And watch carefully the undecided.

Tanaka and his cronies receive a steady stream of visitors, Hosho sees the Commander –Southern Command, the commander South east fleet, and a string of air commanders all ushered in, wined, dined, probed.
Tanaka seems inexhaustible, and Hosho wonders what drives him so hard……..

Despite the steady stream of visitors, Hosho still has time to grasp the general mood of the place, it’s a curious mix of optimism and pessimism.
Optimism – Port Blair fights on -, and the Allies seem to have had another CV crippled – or one has returned to be hit again. It’s a true stand off-and every day works to japans benefit.
Pessimism – Burma strains –the Allies rule the sky north of moulmien – and what reinforcements there are struggle north in a race against time.

Finally -there are the Indians. Thousands upon thousands –and the word is –they wish to fight less for Japan, more for India, more against Churchill and his yoke.. They would make a great addition , if only they can be harnessed correctly………

Its a single small silver dot, moving high across the heavens.
Unobserved by the sprawling base below.

The P38 takes its photos of Rabual, observes the CAP circling below, the harbour full of destroyers and light cruisers, and then it departs.

Below, 47th wait for the blow to fall

The allies recon rabual again, but do not attack.
They pound the troops at Shortlands, Buna, Milne bay.

Nakamura finds himself at sea -literally.

The Commander of the fast squadron has invited him to lunch, and seeing , well to be honest - seeing how Navy food is always better, he has accepted.
With the days CAP organised, and Juni standing in for him, Nakamura takes a car down to the busy wharf area.
Busy is not the word for it - anchored in the harbour are 3 of Japans more elderly light cruisers, and numerous destroyers.
A veritable ants trail of small boats and barges are shuttling between these ships, each one loaded to the hilt with dirty stinking soldiers of the 65th brigade.

Nakamura is assualted by the chaotic noise and activity -but the young seaman who greets him seems oblivious to it all, and guides him quickly into the small motor boat.
He does'nt even seem to notice the alarming rocking of it iether as they churn their way out into the harbour.

Soon the great flank of the cruiser looms besides them -and Nakamura is struck by many things .
He'd always thought of ships like model boats -smooth sides, immaculate paint work. CL ##### was nothing like this -her sides dished in and out in a crazy patchwork -her paint peeling, rust stained.
But the men on the gangway were immaculate - and Nakamura is pleased beyond measure when he is piped aboard.

The pleasure only increases -a familiar, very familiar face meets him -Capt Tama -old school friend and fellow teenage rebel

They greet warmly, and soon Nakamura is being led forward, eyes taking in the bewildering amount of equipment, the bustle of men at a million tasks.
The stink of fuel oil permates the air -and he notes the ugly barge alongside.
He notes too -keenly -the fully manned AA guns pointing at the sky.

Nakamura looks up -and notes his CAP up there in the blue -and a sudden appreciation of the gunners task strikes him -even at only 6000 feet -how hard to hit those planes!
The thought strikes him as well -there are no slit trenches on here to dive into iether.

Lunch is not just pleasant - it is outstanding -white glove service -and fresh, delightfully fresh fish " Cost a depth charge -but what the heck" Tama grins.

Port.
"Well, old friend," Tama raises his glass " I just wanted to meet the man who has kept the hawks of my back this long week"
Nakamura returns the toast , he grins " If I'd known it was you Tama -nary a plane you would have seen"
They laugh
"Seriously" Nakamura turns to the business at hand " Are you doing another run?"
Tama nods "Yes -we have got 2/3rds of the brigade out -this run, Gods willing, will see the lot of them. I am under orders to keep trying until -and I quote -enemy action makes your task no longer viable." he lights a smoke " This, I think -depends very much on how long you keep this place open"

Nakamura nods in agreement.
"I think our allied friends are keen to avoid losses, clean up shortlands first -and they must be wary that the fleet is about"
Tama laughs 'The fleet! -its rusted to the piers in Tokyo I think - its us poor little guys who are carrying the load"
He stubs out the smoke "Whatever, I'm sure you agree -this lack of pressure on here is a godsend"
Nakamura can only agree

At the gangway, Tama farewells him warmly. Nakamura leaves the ship, her anchor already raising for her next"run", even more detirmined than ever to fullfill his orders.
"Keep Rabual open -at all costs. "

Of course -there is anew dimension now -as long as Tama remained -it would be unthinkable to leave.

It is undoubtedly the most dangerous period of the week.
At precisely 0900 hours every Friday, a small group of officers, and very senior ministers gathers in a small office deep inside the deit.

Mr Iwaya dreads this part of the week –it has a simple name –Weekly economic briefing to the Supreme commander.

For his entire career Mr Iwaya has sought to support and serve his political masters in the gigantic bureaucracy of the Imperial system , keeping a low profile, grafting as needed, quietly shaping Japans production and economy–his un expected promotion to a seat of power during Herr Herbiesans coup had been both unwanted, and non negotiable.

Now, once a week, he had to meet the dictator –and answer to him, and him alone.

Unlike Hilter on the other side of the world, Herbiesan ran a hands off approach to the daily grind of the war –he set targets, grand strategy, appointed commanders.
His Admirals, Generals ran the war, and Iwaya fed it.
But herbiesan ran a more effective war than Hitler – here failure consistently meant just one thing.
A bullet in the back of the head.
With great powers, comes great responsibilities.

But for the fact herbiesan was as blindly fanatic to the concept of a divine ruler, of a divine empire as the rest of them, Iwaya could easily hate the man.
But the man was in power –and that’s simply all there was to it

The meeting began, as always, with a quick summary of the weeks events, losses, losses inflicted.
Then the “intelligence” briefing – usually consisting of more wild guesses at the enemies intentions, and the where abouts of the carriers. This weeks latest flap –the gathering of ships at broome.

Then it was Iwaya’s turn – a dry explanation of production, future plans, what ever shortages there were. For nearly 2 years now the news has been mostly good –heavens knows what happens if it turns bad.
Today, today the news is very good. Another carrier joins the fleet –making 4 CV, 2 CVL in the last month, with 3 more CV within 12 days.
The Jack is coming online, oil stocks climb, resource stocks remain steady, aircraft production still exceeds losses.

Herbiesan, as always, listens closely, asks few questions.

But then he breaks routine
He turns to Yamamoto
“I understand we have 2 divisions kicking their heels at Davao- another 2 at sea?”
“That is correct sir”
“Admiral, I understand your plans for SHO GO 1 – enmesh the enemy somewhere on the northern PNG coast, and then crush him –is that correct?”
“Basically, yes”
“But at this rate the enemy will be way short of there by next month –and by the time he does reach there –Carrier numbers for him will be vastly better?”
“Again –a fair appraisal sir”

The dictator ponders the map for a moment
“He mutters – 13CV, 9 CVL, against?’

Then loudly, voice full of passion and deadly intent –a finger slamming firmly into a point on the great map
“I have made a great decision –the empire shall attack”

Later, as Iwaya, and Yamamoto both make their way out of the room –both literally shaken to the core –Iwaya cannot but help think yet again – the most dangerous moment of the week……………

same old, same old.
the allies continue to pound the perimeter of the empire, shortlands continues its desperate struggle, and 47th continue the punishing routine of flying CAP.

And yet, despite all that, a routine life is continuing.
In the town itself, the mainly chinese population continue to do a roaring trade, and the natives continue to come and go -trading heavily.
Small craft continue to shuttle along the coast, and the harbour still contains a multiple number of ships -mainly transports. If Captain Tama is successful, 65th brigade will depart on them for Japan.

The troops of this brigade are being billited near the harbour -the high command has been ruthless -the truly sick, injured and helpless -have been left at Buna until last -should the allies come again, these poor emancipated survivors may well find themselves in the front line.

Nakamura remains uneasy -yet all goes well -few losses from accidents -and the unit continues to strengthen.
Most truly itch for a fight now - and all wonder at the enemies delay in attacking.

At 1400 precisely, many things for tomorrow change.
The enemy have hit a transport at Gassmatta -and up until now Nakamura intends to cover the base with his Tigers, whilst the fighters at Gasmatta cover Tama on his run into Buna.
But this sighting - 3 allied ships -180 miles due east of green island -moving west -fills him with alarm
Greater alarm when the reporting aircraft fails to return.
3 ships?
Type?, speed? -so close?

He orders full Cap over rabual for tomorrow - "sorry Tama" he thinks -"if those ships are carriers............"
