While 47 sentai tried to forget the war -it continued with out them

japanese troops pushed to clarke field, but were repulsed in the hills at bugiao to the north of the field
In central malay the advance continued, and the invasion of timor rolled on.

Tomorrow our sentai sweep changsa - if the weather allows!

47 sentai sweeps the skies towards Changsa -the weather is crystal clear -cold, calm -perfect flying weather.
Below them, and some 2 miles behind comes a small flight of very light bombers, and Ki 27's -also fitted for the bombing role -the target chinese troops marching on the roads ahead

Lt Hyakute is not flying upside down today -but he is on the outer edge of the sentai -and he sees the enemy first -3 bi planes -tracking from left to right -oblivious to the Japanese hawks 4000 feet abaove them
He waggles his wings once, points - The Commander nods his head in agreement, and rolls to the right, diving, the rest of the Sentai follows.

It is all over very, very quickly -the first pass of Hyakute's guns disintergrates the first two fighters, the third pulls up and left in shock -obviously a rookie - and the Lt makes it a hat trick rolling onto his back, pulling his flaps, and firing quickly and accurately as he dives down and past the helpless rookies tail.

The senat closes up -and circles as the bombers go in.
it gas taken less than 1 minute, and Lt Hyakute has proven that his skills are as he imagined them to be - very, very good.

.............and im beginning to like our clown Hyakutake -he showed great skill today I do not think the skill level of the opposition was any greater than what we normally encounter with chinese pilots -but today really boosted the morale of the unit.
tomorow -weather permitting, we will go hunting for better game -hengchow -the american bandits are operating there............

Izumida was the first to congratulate the newly blooded pilot.
today showed how the KI 47 SHOULD be flown -diving attacks, from hieght.

This was good.
If Kanbayashi could only be convinced to fight this way all the time -there was hope for this unit yet.

In great spirits the sentai gathered around the radio that night -eager to hear the news.
it still seemed good

The navy denied the loss of the Mutsu to enemy torpedoe bombers - claiming thet "even now she steams to her next battle" -which from all reports must be around sumutra

the Mighty combined fleet was in action -smashing masses of shipping at soerabaya -whilst beating off torpedo attacks from Pt boats

And troops were also invading kendari, with Kupang reported fallen.

it had been a good day.

.................and the mission to hengchow was scrubbed - a false report of B17's at Chenting threw some one into a panic at HQ today -so we spent most of the day doing what all good soldiers do -"hurry up and wait"...

Extract of a letter from Wo Inoue

........and as a good soldier you must stoically give your all for the empire.
It is the least we can do for our country. I was so proud of your unit at lashio - but it appears our fighters are not nearly as solid as men -being mere machines with out spirit..

I hope to see you soon, as I hear the enemy fighters are still active over you..........

While 47th sentai waited for the word to go - down south the invasion of sumutra and Java reached a crises point.
Japanese troops at Kragen, defeated, and then drove back allied counter attacks, firmly cutting the country into two - and thus preventing a solid stand at soerabaya.

The navy bombarded Batavia - causing chaos in its harbour -although suffering a mine strike to the CA Suzayu -but not enough damage to take her out of the operations.

OK
This AAr is a lot more work than I thought it would be -should I continue -or close it and revert to a "normal" one against cantona?
I am desperately behind (too busy!) - I could manage a snappy updatre each day so that we have Cantona's and my AAR running parallel.
thoughts?

Although shortly the unit is going to lose pilots -it will get easier I suppose as the numbers get less.

Wo Kuroe led this mission - as only 8 planes were available, he adopted a new formation -one he had heard about from the european battles -2 finger 4 flights -each covering the other.

It was not to be tested -no signs of the enemy seen during the entire flight.
The other pilots were pleased to follow his lead though -the Colonel remaining behind this day -looking out for the sick bird - and all new that Kuroe would be the man to follow if the enemy rose -quite simply, when it came to flying -he seemed to be the best.

Upon return, news -enemy bombers attacked the base while they were away today.
They missed - but would they be back?

the enemy are being very hard to engage at the moment -changing targets almost daily -cheeky attack here today - they killed a few rice crops - to the west of here - Hyakute may not get any milk from his cow this week though -the bombs fell in a mile of her I believe!

Tomorrow we will CAP here - may luck be with us.

On this day the mobile fleet struck at Madieon -and closed it!
Kendari was taken, and the fighting continued at Naga and Clarke.
The trap on the DEI was almost complete.

1/1/42

Another fine morning -still very cold, but again beautiful flying weather for the sentai.
All 9 available fighters are in the air today, the Colonel leading this time.
A standard v formation today, circling in a very wide arc at ten thousand feet over army positions north of canton.

Inoute saw them first - small specks to the north - and there was plenty of time.
The Colonel acknowledged him -and waved the formation into the attack - a rough gaggle of planes -headed on a nice intercept course.

3 fighters -3 bombers.
And now the whole world seemed to reduce for Inoute to simply his Cockpit, the sick, and the enemy.
The engine roars, and he is one with his plane, as he sweeps into the attack -coldly calm and focused.
The P40 turns hard, and he follows, at the Tojo's very limit -and he grimaces in disgust -a oscar would be eating up the turn.
Firing, firing, firing -a hit? -and his plane high speed stalls - and he lets it spin once, twice -full opposite rudder, turn stops, stick gently forward, and a gentle pull out -looking hard for the enemy.
More bombers!
8 fat SBc2 - and now he attacks again.
Again bullets strike -and something strikes him as well - and the bomber is smoking -but it remains aloft.

A side on attack -flashing past - and now the guns hiss empty.

The formation reforms -still 9 planes! - and returns.
there is much to ponder.

...................I have again written to the relevant people about the lack of punch for this plane -we need a cannon!
Too lightly armed to take down bombers -not nimble enough to dog fight.
My opinion of the plane has lessened somewhat after today..................

Discussions on the days battles went deep into the night.
two things were apparent -the unit was forming into two schools of thought -those that favoured todays tactics -hunters of the air -pitting superior skill against the opposition -and the more clinical - the teamwork men.
The twins were hunters, as was Hyakute, and to a degree, Inoue.
Izumida led the team push -along with Inoute. The rest were undecided.
All agreed that the bombers had been tough today -and all agreed that a cannon was needed.
And all agreed the war would be over before they got one!

As for the war -the radio was ignored tonight -fighting at Naga, clarke , Kuala Lumpar, and dutch bombers claiming invasion transports burning of Batavia.
It did not matter, the war in the south meant little today.

Juni b landed late in the afternoon.
It had been a long, boring day

Fighter aircraft are not built for comfort - and the KI 44 -as big as it is compared to some of the earlier army fighters -is still a cramped place to work in.
Endless circling over army positions, looking for contacts that never appeared - fighter pilots were born to hunt.

frustrating.

maybe tomorrow.

..........and I wish we could really get to grips with the enemy
Too few planes to really have any effect - not enough to challenge the AVG head on, not enough to stop bombers getting through.
I wish they would just rush this plane into production -and we had a decent group to fight with...........

The news for today
Fighting now in batavia, clarke field, naga, centarl malaya.
All seems to be going well -but this all miles away from 47sentai -and is now of little concern.
The pilots meet tonight - how to bring the enemy to battle?

Hi herbiesan -

Nice AAR - I wouldn't change the format if I were you. I'm interested to see the story develop as new pilots, some experienced, some not, join the sentai - planes are changed out, upgraded, downgraded, etc. I'm sure the 9 planes you have won't last until July, so I'm guessing your boys will end up in Oscars at some point. SOme of them will be happy, some won't.

I'm not concerned that it is not parallel to cantona's aar. I like this story of our Sentai.

Thankyou for comment
AAR will continue same format - turns been so rapid no time to update!
I can say this -it will get easier to do -numbers of pilots are shrinking where game is up to now
