200 miles west of Umeya

Yamamto reads the signal.
Genda watches him closely -wondering what his decision will be.
3 SS sightings already this morning. The attack on Umeya. The clearing weather.
he offers his opinion 'They must know we are coming"
"Yes " growls Yamamoto "they must. But isn't that what we wanted?"
Genda half agrees. "Surprise would have been better"
Yamamoto positivly scowls " I advocated an attack on Pearl in 41 -when surprise could occur -in 44 -a fantasy -a dream in a dream. The reality Genda is this -we must fight. If he comes out -we fight. If he does not..............."

Abruptly he leaves the bridge.
Genda stares out at the busy flight deck. A nod to some of his pilots preparing to board the next patrol. Fight? they have been fighting for so long now -always with an objective in mind. But this?-to simply seek a fight?
He takes a deep breath.
Its in fates hands now.
And, Admiral Cantona's

Ectract from "Shattering the Sword", A Cantona production
Fortunately for Yamamoto -the terrible decision to continue operation 'D' -to accept the risk or not, is taken from him just before midnight.
"High Command cancels operation "D'
return to Japan immediately"

Not a few staff officers breathe a sigh of relief
What Yamamoto thinks of the decision history does not record...........

Regardless, the great fleets turn around, and begin to head home.

Allied Command immediately note the move -the fleet is being hounded by many SS now -and pearl is more than ready.
The great panic can be put to bed.
Time to return to allied offensive plans............

Along with MR Yashimoto, the elderly gentleman downstairs, Iwaya has finished the slit trench alongside the house.
At a pinch, Setsuko and the elderly man can fit in there, and pull a rough lid over their heads.
Its the best he can do in the space/ time he has.

The small slit fills him with unease - it looks totally inadequate to him. His wife laughs at his worries " My husband -what do I have to fear -they are there to protect me"
The "they" is the AA gun across the street -nestled into the river bank beside the bridge.
Setsuko has taken to visiting the young men who man it every evening, giving them small gifts of food ect.
Nakamura laughs at the comment. He thinks she is really only visiting to Mother them -and quietly wonders why he cannot beget a child

Regardless - a trench is dug -sand buckets are placed.
And still he feels un easy -what if this area did burn?
Again, that night -he urges her to quit her job -to move to the country.
But -of course -what would Iwaya do with out her?

"They will never bomb the home land husband -how could that ever happen?"

As Nakamura returns to the base -full of foreboding -he struggles with that statement.
At least -as commander of the 47th -he can do something about her confidence in the future.

One more edit needed. Unless you are trying to imply that there is something untoward going on ("what would Iwaya do with out <Setsuko>?") that would make Nakamura and Iwaya blood enemies?

Thankyou -edit done

I was really quite sick over the weekend and last night - and to be honest -thinking more of the plot in the month ahead -MR Iwaya will be a busy man..................

28/2/44

Dawn. Combined fleet steams Westward -a thousand eyes scanning the still stunningly blue seas for the tell tale periscope feathers. Yamamoto has dodged the fleet due North over night, turning westward at dawn.
The Alutiens hold little fear -enemy air power from there is weak -nothing that CAP cannot handle.

It is with stunning shock that a report of a carrier steaming a mere 220 miles away -heading due south -is recieved on Taiho's bridge
The shock does not last long -even as the message is being recieved on her bridge, the superb team that makes Combined fleets air arm Japans sharpest sword, swings into action.
90 minutes later 100 fighters escort a mix of 150 torpedo bombers and dive bombers to the enemy - combat debut for the new Grace torpedo planes.

CVE Wake Island stands no chance -as do her crew in the killing cold of these arctic waters.

On return, the crews are not jubilant -merely sober -today has been less a battle, more like an execution.
Perversly many feel sorrow for the men they have sunk...............

Enemy dispatched, pathetic counter strike shredded, Combined fleet returns westward, throttles are opened.
Surely the Allies must break the quiet now that has settled into the war - Combined fleet must hurry to get ready.

47th sentai are on parade.
To the left - the camera's. To the front, a dias. On it, important Ministers, generals. Mr Iwaya amongst them.
The speeches -some short, some long.
All rubbish, all un heard by the men of 47th sentai.
Their attention, their thoughts are alone on the new plane on the tarmac in front of them. Make that planes.
47th recieves the first KI-84's -and even Nakamura is surprised. 11 new planes in one day. Eleven!
Four days - and we are operational.....................

Yes, the speeches go unheard.
All minds wonder -when do I get mine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Iwaya and Nakamura share a quiet drink, the day almost done

"Can you keep this rate up -nearly a dozen a day?"
Iwaya tilts his head - 'I plan too - we will see. I have enough factory capacity -metal is another matter"
he sips his drink - "Do you like it -the plane?"
Nakamura nods. 'yes - yes, very much. Give us enough of these and we might give the Allies real pause"

Outside -the sound of snarling engines racing low and hard across the field. Both men savuor the sound as it fades away. Juni is already hard at work welding his section into its beasts................

Nakamura changes the topic " Are you still planning for April 1?'
Iwaya merely nods
"'I doubt we will be here to help - 47th must get back into the war"
Iwaya smiles. "A paradox neh? - the harder I work -the less chance I have"

Again the snarl -and the roof shakes. And faintly a few cheers float across the field.
'You have given us a mighty weapon friend. We will use it to our fullest. But........."
"But you fear the future"
"I fear the future"

Iwaya stands "You are our samurai Nakamura. Our sword. Go and kick the imperiallists arse. Save Japan. If I fail next month, what is left but honour and duty?"

Yes. Honour and duty. When all else fails, when the world goes dark - what is left?. Nothing, except Honour and duty

Juni banks her hard, and she responds on rails, the fields flashing below, shadow chasing him across Japan.

Opposite stick, imaginary enemy in front...............

heavens -this plane is sooooooooo good.

It surges again.
Bring the enemy on.
We are well over due to meet again.

Audacious in its planning and thought! Op D was unlucky to run through some of the main sub lanes used by the USN as its subs approach Japanese held waters. Its luck improved when it was spotted and two attacks on carriers missed! To be honest I was expecting either and attack on the the northern and western australain sea board or my shipping lanes to and from the Solomons and Pearl. An attack on PH I wasn't expecting but I did reinforce and upgrade many aircraft in many bases as I could have been on the receiving end anywhere!

These are busy,, and very exciting days for the men of the 47th. Iwaya is true to his word –Japans industry is producing 11 of the new fighters per day – they arrive on schedule, and our men eagerly begin to truly adopt to them.
The skies over Gumma snarl to the sound of aero engines –there will be a lot of upset farmers this month in this area.
The sight of fighters passing under THAT bridge will become common as the dawn

Preparations are being made to leave.

47th have travelled many times –but these preparations are particularly poignant -deep inside themselves most know that these may be their last days in Japan forever , soon they must return to battle.

Wives, children, parents.
All are precious.
But they are what they fight for.

All, today, as final farewells are said, will be protected from the truth however. To a man, 47th will say farewell –for now –and I will see you soon.
Hearts will break, and sorrows swell –and then be put away into dark corners of their souls –and minds will turn to the future .

47th have the best the Empire can provide. They are the best the Empire has.
They are Nakamura’s men – unbroken, unshakeable now.
They prepare to go to war –determined to make a difference

2 hours before dawn

The sharks are in the water. And they smell blood.
The allied submarine offensive has had terrible luck this war – Japan incredibly good luck – untold numbers of times her carriers have avoided the missiles seeking them.
Now, as Nagumo contemplates the horror ahead of him, he wonders if their luck is about to change

The AO burns.
The torpedo has struck her just forward of the bridge – and the gates of hell have opened.

Even from here, 500 yards away as his carrier races past, Nagumo can feel the heat from the column of fire –he cannot imagine what the small knot of figures crawling towards the stricken ships bow can feel..
The heat is horrible – but the light being emitted is terrifying - all around him the fleet is illuminated – great grey castles fleeing this beacon, 5 thousand sphincters clamping shut –each and every one waiting for the next salvo to find them………….

Nagumo stands solidly near the binicle – and mentally urges every knot his engines can wring out of his ship.

‘Signal from Taiho sir!”
He merely nods –too afraid to speak, should someone misinterpret the strain he feels….
So many torpedos – so many tracks –how many more sharks lining them up even now?
“ new course -course for fleet is @#$%^&^%$ -stanby to execute”

We dodge, we duck. By the Gods –how much longer can our luck hold out?

I wish we could say they got far.
But, like most things in war SNAFU.
47th will spend the next few days at short notice, confined to base near Osaka - some one higher up in the command chain is suddenly unsure of where they will deploy to.
Hurry up and wait.

Days of confined to a foriegn mess, listening to rain drizzling down.
The days are very long and dreary indeed.

Extract from Shattering the sword -a cantona production

Japan was getting good at it - the evacuation of isolated troops. At Port Blair, the stunned Allied troops - incredulous that they merely remained alive, had finally twigged.
The Japanese and Indian troops appeared to be pulling out......................

Seamen Agarishi and Shimto approach the central Engineering office with reluctance. The rumours around are down right ugly. Tomorrow should be home and Sake, and women, and all the good stuff............

The rumours are terribly true however.

Operation D is not with out consequence. Two weeks in heavy seas -a combat operation -and hard, hard steaming -on top of a too short of maintenance period -has hurt.
The hurt appears in the lists - the minor defect books, the requests for shore assistance lists, the must be docked at first opportunity lists.
From cracked welds, to major boiler cleans -the work is piling up.
The flyers may go ashore today, to celebrate the latest mission -the Engineers will not be

The CPO Engineer is brisk -he looks tired -as he is -and he barely gives them a glance as the two young men await at the door
"Ahhhh -my trusted sprayer punchers " he ticks names off - 'Boiler cleans with PO Sastuma -1A, 1B. We have 48 hrs -if we are lucky"
The CPO notes the crestfallen faces "be glad its not battle damage repairs. Get the job done -and we might get a beer yet"

There is nothing to do except curse luck -and officers who forget that machinery cannot be inspired to go that extra yard........

Iwaya stands in the shadows of the room, to the back.
He notes with interest the gathering -a bomb in here -and the war would be over immediately -Japan decapitated.
The Navy is here in strength -and so are all the generals
The great dictator has bought them together 'for a little talk'

The speech is long, rambling -a recounting of the revolutionary days, the struggles, the losses , the triumphs of the "great march forward"
Iwaya assumes its meant to inspire -it leaves him cold -how could they have been so blind to be so charmed by this empty suit?
Eventually the speech reaches the war -and Iwaya resumes listening.
Burma -the great struggle continues - the allies advance -clumsily -2 tank regiments have been bounced backwards.
All are confident that the war here will grind on for many, many months yet.
China remains stalemated - the Wuchow offensive has failed - but the allies have been forced to drag many troops to there - no, China remains predictable.
PNG -now, here the war remains an enigma -a pleasing one - 2 full divisions have been extracted that should have been lost . The enemy will attack soon -but it will, must cost.
Again, a satisfactory affair.

The Gilberts/marshalls.
Gone -indefensible -held only because of stubborness.

The speech ends -the great dictator seems confident.
But, he asks - can the war be won yet?

Iwaya wonders -is he that niave?
Win?
How in the world does he expect to win?

The floor opens to discussion -where can the attack come? -where are we vulnerable?
Iwaya watches, listens closely -a chance to find more potential allies -and potential enemies.
To his dismay -the Army almost to a man -his 54th div excepted - seem to be eager "to defeat the enemy once and for all"
The Navy too -seems to still expect to win.

Iwaya is asked -of course -his opinion. he simply tells it like it is -Japans economy races along - oil stocks are full, supplies bulge from the warehouses, resources pour in -and planes and arms flow out. But it must be remembered that it is but a trickle to the flood confronting them -and above all -the resource supplies must be protected.
Iwaya gets the impression few really hear his words......................

The meeting finishes with drinks - the Dictator is in an expansive mood - "6 months you told me Yamamoto -6 months!. I tell you gentlemen, hold the Americans just 6 months longer -kill a few more of them - and their weak home front will throw their president out -and we will have won."
he raises his glass for a toast " gentlemen - to our esteemed opponent Admiral Cantona -the man who can still win us the war in an afternoon!"

Miyazuki, Juni, are watching 87th sentai accepting their new Franks.
Nakamura dozes in his lounge chair
47th apparently -will deploy as a group again, 3 sentais as "the fronts fire brigade"
Miyazuki has a small note book in his hand, and a envelope in the other -it is stuffed with cash
Juni eyes the cash with a interested eye - "hows the sweep going friend?"
Miyazuki scans his little book - " most of the guys have us going somewhere in Burma -a few PNG - 2 for Siapan, 3 for Timor -and just one -you ugly buggar - back to Canton"
"Oh -and the pot?"
"More than sufficient -not that you need to win any more money"
Nakamura opensone eye -cocks it towards Juni "Canton eh? -why there?
"just a hunch"
"well, if you hear anything positive -let this mushroom know" the eye falls shut again

Miyazuki murmers -'Mushroom?'
"kept in the dark -and fed sh##"
'Oh - I see -but that applies to anything military doesn't it"
"yes -and only the depth varies friend, only the depth varies............."

Extract from the diary of Col Nakamura

................. bloody stump gave me a little trouble today - I'm gaining wieght! -this will not do!
Frustrated to hell with progress of conversion to KI-84's - I am ready, the other sentai's are not -so more hurry up and wait!

latest reports from south pacific - invasion of Admiralty island. I can look at the harbour here -Navy remains sitting on its arse -so heavens knows what they think of it.
Disturbing rumours of "very heavy air losses" - not surprised -the kids we see heading out of here nowdays .

Got a message to Wife - and told her to contact the Isuki's again -move to the country wife! -but she won't -I know it.
Saw that gorilla again -Hosho today -he is his own little air line business -and he had Admiral Tanaka with hm -who is walking at last.
I am beginning to wonder if we will be here for April 1 after all. In my heart of hearts, I hope not - its too dirty a business for me..........

A nice big post for you guys to begin the week with................

Extract from ‘Shattering the Sword’ a cantona production

…….before we examine the first naval battle of Admiralty island, we need to convey to you the reader, the impact of ‘a tropical storm’ –and its effects on both radar and tactics.

On the night of the tenth, 2 intense storm fronts dominate the battle. The invasion fleet lay some five miles to the north of the invasion beaches –three DDs, Harrison, Helford and Chevelion patrolling to its north.
Here, One mile to their North –the first heavy intense storm, some 2 miles thick, and sluggishly moving east.

North of this front, 3 miles of brilliantly clear weather –and 6 patrolling MSW.

North of them, 2 miles away, and clearly visible – BB Washington, Cruiser Vincennes, Marblehead, DD’s Haven, O Bannon, and Balch –slowly moving North towards the next great storm front –another literal wall of water 3 miles thick.

This night these two fronts totally blanked out all radar pictures, reducing any technological advantage the Allies should enjoy in 44.

And Steaming south hard to the Northern edge of this front, Captain Ujiure in CL Isuzu is counting on this…………….

1200 hrs
Ujiure takes a deep breathe.
Ahead deep, deep darkness –5 minutes more and they plunge into the unknown
He turns from his bridge wing –and glances aft.
Isuzu leads Jintsu, Kiso, Tatsuta and 9 destroyers in line ahead.
He notes grimly that orders are being followed –the formation is insanely closely gapped –“each ship will hang off the tail of its leader come hell or high water –200 yards -no more! If you lose the formation – south –head south!”

He turns again to his bridge crew ‘ready men?”
Nods –nods all round –and eagerness. “”Alright then –lets see what the Gods have for us -stern lights on! –2 points to port –full ahead flank!”
Abruptly the rain begins – the torrent -drowning out all noise –all sight – swallowing up his formation into wet, wet, cloaking darkness………….

…and at 1205 the Japanese formation plunges into the first front –all that is except DD Ariake –she veers 2 points to STBD –and as Ujiure plunges through the storm, this destroyer skirts its Western Flank –in clear bright moonlight – struggling with her steering.
The steering failure is human error, a minor
Thing, but on minor things sometimes the fate of many can hang…………

Even at 86 , you can see the remnants of what once must have been a very handsome and proud face. Mr Sutton is a proud man, proud of his service in the war, and prouder still of the Washington “a damn fine ship” –but even now, his hatred “of those little yellow barsteds” burns brightly.
We let him take up his tale
“ On this night, I was gunnery director for the Starboard battery of five inch secondary guns –I should have had the Port guns –but Jim –that Jim Hancock – was already in that particular director working on another of those goddamn gitches when we went to general quarters –so I ended up in the wrong Goddamn director”

He pauses, lights another of the interminable stream of cigarettes he smokes, and that dark night seems so far away from this sun drenched Texas ranch.
“So you knew the Japs were coming? –when was that?”

he scratches –‘Oh – gee –we knew the monkeys were coming well before dusk – coming hard –we were spoiling for a fight too –and we had radar –and were bloody confident too –“

“So what happened?” it is a delicate question. I ask it gently –and with out any tone of accusation –we all know ‘what happened’ – I try to imply –I would like to know –why did it happen?

‘lets see –it was just about half midnight –and we picked em up –big fat blob of targets –coming straight at us –and skipper was so pleased – we turned Northeast, and bought the guns to bear – but I wasn’t so happy –that left me on the disengaged side to speak.”
‘And then?’

“well then that great bloody great storm broke –and we lost track –all except what appeared to be several cruisers now moving to our left –going around the storm”

At 1210 hours Ujiure is halfway through the front –and Ariake is 2000 yards of her stbd bow –but in the clear . Washington, leading her task force begins to swing hard North –and brings all guns to bear on “the cruisers” bearing down her left flank.
And then, at 1212 precisely, The Jintsu bursts clear of the storm – a mere 2000 yards from her STBD Flank………..

………..” and then the slippery sh##s suddenly burst into view on the Stbd side –and…………

Mr Sutton pauses, and the clock ticks loudly in the quiet of the living room. But he is not here, he is back THERE –where I cannot ever go – in the dark –and the sudden, violent, violent night – in the crash of guns, and the screams of the dying

…….” And then they murdered us”
Another cigarette. We know now Washington took , in the space of 3 minutes, over 40 hits –mostly by low caliber shells –as the Japanese line steamed past in the opposite direction – but it was the long lance torpedos that Jintsu hit her with almost immediately that really did the damage
I ask him about them –about the hits. Surprisingly – he is quite factual about that –he might be telling me how he breaks his horses – so calmly he describes the damage .
“ Those first hits killed everyone on the bridge –I’m sure of that – and both 16 inch turrets went dead immediately –I couldn’t raise anyone – in fact the hits were so rapid it was hard to even see or hear anything –I just ordered engage –and tried my best –I know we hit the third F%$#$%er as she raced past – but Washington kept swinging hard to port, and we were slowing, and before I knew it –no targets –by then the fires were really going, and I was beginning to find out what a pot roast feels like…….

Ujiure grips his guard rail hard –excitement grips him. Isuzu is firing, firing – a thousand fireflies streaking towards the great mountain of steel lumbering past – the relative speed is stunning. Washingtons great bulk is veering away – a Cruiser is behind her, heeling away, trying to not collide. Her following destroyers too, wheel hard, and as they pass –Japanese ships slam shell after shell into the helpless ships –helpless, he notes with exultation, because their guns are pointing the other way!

They are past –two streams of ships heading in opposite direction…..
Must fix this –must finish them off –must kill them, kill them!
‘Hard to PORT –lets go again!”
Isuzu heals, heals, How bright the moon is! - and grimly he sees Kiso is burning.

“Anyone hurt?”
No! –
A cry of triumph from aft –yes –Washington is hit again –3, or 4 torpedos now?………

His formation comes round –and they attack again, overtaking, running parallel to the shattered allied column…………

…..well –that was us –all but finished already. Skipper dead. Front of the ship dead – Vincennes only escaped because we were between her and them –the destroyers though were between us and them………….they were smashed.”
He shakes his head
‘it was a goddamn mess’ All those years of training, all that work –and they killed us in less than 5 minutes………”

Ujuire hits Washington 2 more times – leaves three destroyers sinking in his wake –and then continues the charge south.
So far only Kiso burns –hit repeat ably by washingtons 5 inch guns.
But they do not stop her.

In this clear area between fronts, the moon shines brightly – and for the 6 MSW in his path –there is no where to hide.
The task force sweeps past them –leaving four sinking, 2 burning –and then plunges again into the dark wetness of the second storm front

Captain Ujuire too is a proud man. But he holds no hatred ‘ for those brave fellows I sunk”
But I don’t condemn MR Sutton for that, nor do I give Ujuire any extra credit –its easier not to hate when victory is yours

‘I did not expect to repeat the surprise twice –but we did. We burst out of that second front still in tight formation –can you imagine that? – blinding rain, a battle, a complete 360 degree turn – and still they all followed me through that second storm
And then we were right in amongst them –3 fletchers –and we cut straight through them –heavens – I could see the sweat stains on the gunners of Harrison.”

He laughs “ I really could have used the kitchen sink – by then ammo was going out wards at rates you could not imagine –and they were sending it back too!

And then, just like Mr Sutton, he is not here with me in this little kitchen –but back THERE –on that bright night – and I realize , really realize -I won’t ever know what it was like.
These old men do – and we must never forget…………….

The first battle of Admiralty island sees 4 lost Japanese destroyers, and the cruiser Kiso.
The allies lose 5 , and Washington staggers away – Fortunately for her, Rabual is close by.
But Ujuire has missed the escort carriers (hidden in those same storms), and damaged just two transports. As always – the invasion continues…………………

Admiral Tanaka must be proud of his old flagship Jintsu, but a nearly straight trade in destroyers makes it a biggish bill for giving Washington some yard time.

Boiler cleaning = no fun at all. Unless it's a broiling hot summer's day, in which case it's easy to find an excuse for turning boiler washing into a waterfight!
