Colonel Kanbayashi actually faces a tough decision every time the sentai flies.
The sentai has just 9 precious fighters -and with him included -10 pilots.

Japanese leaders lead -always from the front, so it would be expected that he flies in every mission.
yet records show that he does/did not -a delicate balance of leadership -in the air when necessary -and back on the field when needed there.

Today he did not fly - 47th sentai was still in name an experimental unit -and this side excursion to the freezing areas was in part a side mission.
reports to be written, mostly negative on this planes maintenance in this type of weather and situation.

today it nearly killed him - roused from his reports by the sudden bark odf AA weapons -he barely had time to get to the door of the hut - and to see the bomber swooping across the field - and one second quicker -the spray of indiscriminate fire from its gunner would have nailed him.

The IL4c bomber (yes, this one is russian -but the Colonel does not own a camera!)

So these are my erstwhile opponents

herb has given me permission to read and comment on this AAR, which ill gladly do. Unfortunately i cannot extend the same courtesy as my AAR is concurrent with the game and contains sensitive material not for Jap eyes!

If Herb permits i could add bits and pieces here and there from the opponents of the 47th Sentai. I hope you'll all understand if i dnt wish them luck or any further kills

Your welcome to mate -though at the rate im posting the events will be well cold by the time I relate them.
Although being behind has its points - I had a pilot down killed -but then a month later he turned up????!!! -so i think he got WIA -all very confusing trying to keep track of the game keeping track of pilots.

All through the DEi the Chaos and disaster of war spread
The combined fleet struck Singapore -Tjilitjap was struck by Battleships -malang was invaded, and kuatan in malaya fell - and japan seemed to be everywhere.

To Lt Hyakute all this mattered not a wit. The mess may have been crowded as his comrades re equated themselves with the big radio and the news, for him far important news could be found in this simple barn just outside the field.

"She is eating welll?"
The Chinese couple he was sharing his prize beast with nodded assent.
"and the milk?"
"Is good"
"This weather -have you been able to obtain enough feed?"
The Chinese man hesitated.
That was enough. Quickly hyakute reached into his pocket -produced cash.
The farmer beamed in pleasure
"Leave me please"
Bess the cow, settled on her knees, chewed her cud.
Hyakute settled down too -just to contemplate her great brown eyes.
One could gain a lot of peace just staring into those deep dark lakes.

47 Sentai rests today - deep maintanance conducted on all the planes -Canton realativly empty of planes today -so the ground crews can make a big effort

the twins spend the day gambling
Hyakute again visits his cow -and pesters everybody for "instrument flight checks -and is refused by the Colonel - again
Inoute spends the day asleep -, Iwaya writes to his father back in Japan -again asking for his influence to transfer him home.
Izumida spends his watching the ground crews, and assisting -as does Takenaka - he too is worried by the abuse the planes are undergoing

Kuroe gets drunk -but hides it well.

All wish to be back at Lashio -where Hurricanes are being reportedly devastated in good old traditional dogfights .

2 lt Inoute and captain Izumida sat side by side in the mess -half listening to the reports coming in over the radio -good news of troops advancing on soerabaya, entering rangoon.

This was good news -WO Inoue was naturally following the fighting around Lashio with great interest -his Son having been in the para drops there at the wars start. it appeared that relief may well be on the way for them, and a bold plan fullfilled.
but the topic of real interest was tomorrow - and tactics
The Colonel had again ordered a standing LRCAP -at 10000 feet -and Capt Izumida was seeking support -

"you agree then?"
"yes" Inoute looked carefully around " this stooging at 10 is stupid -we must take hieght tomorrow"
"Then its agreed/"
"yes - lets fall back a bit, and I will see you at 20000?"
"20 it is then"

Yep - its a zero

14/1/42
Deep over enemy positions North of Canton, Hyakute led Inoute and Kuroe at 10000 feet. They have just relieved the “first shift”, and can expect at least 2 hours on this patrol –if they remain on minimum fuel.

Hyakute is here at this point in his life because of a burning, burning ambition to fly –from the very moment he saw his first plane. This is what he was born to do –fly a fighter plane.
He knows that many think he is an idiot –and not very skilled at what he does –but inside he knows he does have it –if only he can get a chance to prove it.

Inoute is here because his service bought him here. Service was the only way to escape the fishermans miserable life –and if one must serve –let one do it where there is much honour to be had.
Already having been at war for some time here in China, he knows the score.
The Chinese are easy, the Russians harder. The Americans the hardest.
But he knows that none of these are the most dangerous –its flying itself –in planes maintained at a rush, with fellow flyers who are either tired, or excited, or focused too heavily on the one thing –that poses the greatest threat.

Kuroe flys tag, as usual. It is not normally where any one wants to fly –but it is his preferred position. One’s mistakes are not as easily noticed.
He has a hang over –and with every foot of height gained today the pain of it grows.

They are into the flight by just 15 minutes when Hyakute spots them -3 chinese bombers at 5000 feet –sliding northwest –and from the clouds of dust rising from the plain below –they have already bombed.
The 3 fighters are exactly where Inoute has insisted they should be –at altitude, set for a diving attack

They dive –supremely confident –a 70 degree plunge – and the bombers are coming up, 4000 feet, 3000 feet, 2000 feet.
War teaches fast –and these chinese pilots are learning well – they wait until the last moment –and break in and under the stooping fighters plunge –falling under their noses.
Only Hyakute is quick enough-he spins, inverts, and fires as his path and the bombers intercept in space.
Pieces fly off the bomber –the tale gunner slumps, but it is not enough –again the KI 44 lacks the punch to bring it down.

All 3 fighter pilots pull hard up – a deadly move if fighters had of been about –exchanging energy for height –but it is not enough –the bombers have escaped.

And Inoute fills the airwaves with profanity at the opportunity missed.

The transports arrive - enough to take engines, spares, some of the maintenance crews and the like. These will almost be able to make it to Soerabaya in 2 hops -we will need 3, maybe 4 -weather and enemy depending!

15/1/42

The day dawned with an air of excitement –the orders were confirmed –the 47th Sentai is moving south west –to where the war is at its hottest.

First stop Siagon.
The morning is spent in last minute preparations –Colonel Kanibayashi may fill some of his pilots minds with doubt over his aerial leadership –but when it comes to administration –he is good –very good. The unit will lack very little on its journey south in the way of support and spares – unit of transport planes have “been found” to support the move.

This mission is important –high Command has begun converting factories at home to build this new army fighter – if it proves successful, then they will be expanded even further.

But to be successful they need to prove completely the reason they were built for in the first place –point defence of vital installations. And today nothing is as vital as Palembang .

Morning preparations are interrupted by a scramble – 3 fighters scrambled to chase another nuisance raid of 3 SB-2c –they fail to intercept the bombers – who attack targets a long way away.

The unit departs –excited. The news from the south west is good –Soerabaya is under siege, Djokarta has fallen, the army rushes towards Singapore –but the dutch and British airforce are fighting back.

The flight is long –and un eventual. But all are very pleased to see Siagon come into view – the flight has included a long ocean passage –not something that these Army pilots relish – they had made land fall only 30 miles of course as it was !

Not until circuit did the trouble come.

Wo Kuroe was quite simply –flying under the effects of liquor.

The letter last night had been a bitter blow

“ ………..so you see my darling husband, we are totally ruined. The Army even as I write this are tearing down our shop –the entire street –for this new airfield. Ironic isn’t it?. I will try to do my best , maybe my Mother shall settle her distaste of me, and take me back in, while I try to re establish our life some where else……….”

He was tired, he was hung over, he was bitter. He was not concentrating.

He turned into circuit late –and Inoute turned early.
Collision.

The bang!, bought Kuroe sharply back into focus –what!!! –had he hit a bird? –or?
The plane seemed fine –yes was fine –a cautious turn to the left, to the right –and – OH crap – a fighter spinning down below him – tail gone –and , and –jump !!! –for heavens sake –jump! –and relief as the chute opens moments before the first lost fighter for 47th sentai craters into the paddy field below

Wo Inoute lands heavily, very heavily. This is the third time in his career he has “hit the silk” –this time third time unlucky – landing on the edge of the paddy field –right knee thrusting up terribly hard into his chest.

He breaks 3 ribs, wrenches his knee, and bruises his arse badly.

Wo Inoute wont be following the sentai for some time………….

from the diary of Col Kanbayashi

Losing a plane yesterday was a blow - and we were very lucky not to lose 2 -and 2 pilots to go with them.
I must find something tomorrow to get Kuroe's mind back onto the job.
I expect that Inoute will be back in a month or so -all things considering.

have had a hell of a day trying to find out from any one where the hell I am meant to take us tomorrow.
I have learnt a big lesson today -regardless of the imperitive -no more long range transfer missions -all that ocean yesterday worried me -and navigating and flying over water -well -Im not up to it.
I admit it.
we were lucky indeed -any bad weather and e may not have made it.

Khota Bharu tomorrow -I am getting a sheep dog to guide us -some fine fellows I met at the mess today promise to do the job............

The sheep dog is a successful tactic -the entire Sentai -now reduced to 8 planes and 8 pilots, makes a incident free transfer to Khota Bharu.
It was a very long flight -and few of the pilots have the energy to explore the new surroundings -simply grabbing their allocated tents -and collapsing

The field is intensly busy this day - Japan is opening her bombing offensive proper against Singapore today -and the field thunders to the sound of KI-21 medium bombers, and the snarl of the escorting oscars.

The war is going well -the army closes in on Singapore itself -Clarke airfield has been taken, and the battle for Soerabaya is ripe for taking.

extract from letter Capt Izumida, addresses to Lt Argo, 33rd Sentai

(letter apparently never delivered)

...........and we made it with out another loss -a surprise if you ask me.
The KI-21s took a hammering today -aren't you glad we made fighters? -flying those trucks would be a nightmare.
There are some British Hudson bombers wrecks here -well the remains of some - and Im not impressed at all - I think even our pathetic guns can take them down.
However -if you meet an American Fortress -what a giant of a plane - you will learn a lesson real quick!
We are going to move again tomorrow -following the Army South..........

47sentai move south today to kuantan -recently captured by the advancing Army

It is not a happy re deployment - 8 planes arrive safely at the field -again a sheep dog leading the way - but Major Takenaka's plane suffers a badly bent prop taxiing into the reverments here -courtesy of the plowed up field.

TOn the other hand -the pilots are very pleased with what they find in the way of support -Colonel Kanbayashi has already been with some of the transports -and support seems to be coming out of the fields ears.

The pilots happily are told to"go and rest" -Even Takenaka's plane is promised to be repaired for tomorrow -yet another long flight -to palembang

The twins are walking around the field, inspecting some of the remains of war scattered about the field -various Dutch and british wrecks.

Just to the south of the field -where some of the wreckage lays thickest -is a series of small ponds -each about 10 metres across.
Already the jungle is starting to claim them -but there is no doubt at the moment that these ponds have not formed naturally

Juni V points to them " And that my friend -is why our father wanted us in the Navy"
"So we could skulk around under the ocean -with no daylight -and splash around in puddles?"
The twins grin.

"Idiot" - Juni V outlines the ponds with his hands" That you ignouramous -is where a big fat Navy shell -in fact -a whole series of big fat Navy shells landed."His Brother looked carefully.
he was right. Soberingly right
" I understand now why the opposition has been so light in the air - who'd want to be at the end of this lot?"
