I'm growing a little weary of the WWII themed games, so I'm looking for a new game set during contemporary times, preferably (but not exclusively) involving desert warfare. While I still play AT and TOAoW III, I'm looking for something on a smaller scale. Thanks.

or Combat Mission: Shock Force (more desert!) You might find Air Assault Task Force worth a look as well, even with rather less desert (Vietnam, Somalia, Afghanistan) if lack of eye candy doesn't worry you.

Or you could try this freebie: Armored Brigade It's pretty good.

I've had Close Combat: MT since it came out. Not the best in the series, but still fairly fun.

This game has crossed my mind a few times. How is it right now? I'm a huge fan of the CM series, but I heard nothing but terrible things (buggy, bad engine, ****ty A.I., etc) about this entry since it was released and I haven't bothered to check it's status in awhile.

This looks great!

Any way, I'm open to many more suggestions.

I still think the upgraded version of modern Steel Panthers is the best modern warfare game. Try the free version.

Flashpoint Germany.  Not desert warfare but modern.  It's a good value for what you get!

Some of the HPS Squad Battles are modern.  I like the games but they are a bit pricey.

'Fixed' is the word that best describes it now. Not perfect, mind, but an awful lot better than it was on release and about as good as it's likely to get. Best to forget the previous CM games, though... despite the bolt-on WEGO option it was designed as real-time and plays best that way once you get used to it.

That's where I buy most of my games.  The guy that runs the place is really good.  Good service.

If you are feeling flush, you could try Steel Beasts ProPE. It is an excellent tactical sim.

Well, after reading these suggestions, I decided to read up a bit more on Combat Mission: Shock Force. After reading the patch notes and CM:SF forum, I decided to buy it. After toying around with it for an hour, I can't honestly say this was a worthwhile purchase... the interface is horrendous, the AI is (still) very buggy, pathfinding needs a bit more work, and, worst of all, despite it's dated graphics, I'll occasionally get a drastic FPS drop. I mean, I can run Crysis maxed-out for God's sake, so why the hell am I getting lag spikes? Aside from that, the engine itself is still extremely buggy. Several times I witnessed a few of my tanks simply wonder right through concrete walls and into buildings, without even damaging either. Battlefront really dropped the ball with this one.

Any way, as for the HPS Squad Battle games, I already own a few and I just ordered SB: Soviet-Afghan. I can't wait.

Of all the suggestions already posted, this one has peaked my interest the most. This looks amazing, but 125 dollars? I wish they would post a demo but still, I just may save up for this.

Any how, for now, I think I'll just give Flashpoint Germany a spin, then SP: MTB. If these do not satiate my hunger for a modern combat sim, then I guess it's back to TOAoW III.

Just don't buy it first. Probably greatest thing of commercial version over free one is possibility to change game's screen resolution.

CM:SF's realtime feature sucks.U will find yourself ordering units while paused alot,so you my as well play turn based. From afar CM:SF's terrain looks pretty dull, but zoomed in,the units, buildings and effects are quite nice. When it comes to classic turn based,CMSF is one fun game.

Well I have had a very different experience with CM:SF. Sure there are issues...there are in every game I own...some more than others. But to play it, I find it a blast. I also like the RT aspect, even though I am not a RT fan.

So go figure.

I think a lot of people's complaints about CMSF are based off the release game, which I guess was a mess, as opposed to the now patched version of the game.

You might want to look at Armored Task Force and Air Assault Task Force at the Shrapnel Games site, too.  They are realtime games at the squad/platoon/company level.  They play in a way that will remind you of HTTR and COTA.

Also nobody has mentioned Harpoon. Obviously no desert warfare here as it's naval warfare but it is a very good game with plenty of varied scenarios to keep you going

Any of those titles represent squad-based themes? Am looking for something like Squad Leader in modern. ( or like Campaign Series)
Thanks
