Talked a friend into buyin WitP, and we're silly noobs and bent on diving right in (mostly), so we're going to run the Tutorials and poke around in the manual after we've started (heh, we're nuts). I've read that the Manual's 'iffy' and figured experience is the best teacher anyway...

Ok, since I haven't had a weekend off to do a full run-through of the tutorial I'd thought I'd simply get as far as I could, save the game, and then come back to work my way further along the next day. Imagine my irritation when, on the 2nd day, I look for my save game and can't find it, being I'd only saved one game it should be hard to miss.

Ok, no biggy, I'll just start over. Re-doing things is far faster and I'm back up to my previous end-point, and then some. I have to save (never resize the windowed mode!!!) and re-load to clear up my little 'graphics issue'. I start the client again, there IS a save game (huzzah) and proceed to load it to finish Japan Turn 1. Oddly enough, I can't click on Palu Oh, ok, now I see, I'm suddenly the Americans!

What am I doing wrong here? Am I going to have to do turns completely in one sitting before I can save a turn? I don't claim to have read everything in the "must read" forums, but I don't recal seeing this being in the FAQ either.

Gday Gommer,

Life as you know it is about to end.

I dont know why your save game has gone, but you should be able to go to the 'autosave' button and, I believe, this will reload at you last completed turn, though this may be day 2 which might not be what you want

Yes, you must complete a turn before you can save it.

Turning into an American!!  You have to choose the side you play at the main menu befire you go to open the saved game (That were you went to look wasnt it, not the scenario file??)

Read the manual, its probably 75% right. I think it lags behind any updates they do to the game and therefore can be wrong.

Take your time, and be ready for the Admirals Edition or WITP XXVII, which ever arrives first.

Hi Gommer, sorry you're having trouble

Hard to tell for sure from your description, either you didn't really save or you're not looking in the right place for your save.

I'd suggest a tiny bit of practice with the Coral Sea scenario in terms of saving mid-turn and resuming. And yes it is possible to save mid-turn and then resume later.

Joe

whoops,

I thought it was meant after hitting the play turn button

Yep, you can save up to that point. (Or is there a way to save within this period?)

If you play against the AI, you have to set each time which side plays the AI before you load a game. Japanese AI is the default. If you play Japan, you have to turn the switch to Allied AI after each start of the client.

No. It is possible to safe and reload any time, you don't have to complete the turn first.

You must push the "end turn" bottom if you want to generate the savegame which you will send to your PBEM opponent. But for your own use, you can save and reload as often as you want. Yust use the save menu (hotkey f) to save the game, not "end turn".

Hi Gommer, welcome ... I thought a picture can tell a 1000 words...

Button 1 -> General save. (you can come back to it so you can issue more orders before completing your turn). I use this often during my orders phase, just in case I do something I want to reverse.
Button 2 -> End of turn save.(your turn is over ... no comeback)

Also, many hours go into making a good first turn, many players, save this (button 1) and archive it for later...

I also use 2 save slots, one for the turn and one for the general save ...

Lastly, I believe you became the Americans, because you did an End of turn save ... then came back and you put the same password in for the Allies (player 2) and it opened ...

Hey but forget about all of that and challenge your friend to a short pbemail game. That is the best way to learn the game and I think most here will agree that a human opponent is really much better than playing the AI. My experience is that the AI sucks so bad that you will only develop bad habits. Pbemail has some different steps but is not hard.

Have fun, this is a great game.

Gommer,

My guess is that you saved in slot 001. Do not use this slot, your save will be overwritten by the combat replay. Only use slot 2 or higher.

Also, when you click the "Save" button that n01487477 is showing as "1" above, this will take you to the save screen, once in the screen, you must pick the slot you want to save in....and DO NOT FORGET to hit the little "save" button in the lower left. After you hit the save button, you then hit the "exit" botton to go back to the game, where you can exit out of the game if desired.

And we have a winner! Turns out that it's the same case if you're playing Head-to-Head (as the Tutorial has you doing). Set to H2H and fired up the save, everything as I left it mid-turn.

I've only managed to suck(er) one of my friends into buying WitP so far, but I'm working on another. Both are interested in playing the Jap side of things, I'm just not wired agressively enough. We're going with the "Play Tutorial to learn basics, then start a Scen 15 PBEM next" plan. Reading the manual is entirely optional at this point. I'm sure desperation will lead to it at some point, but we'll see who caves in first

Part of what drew me to the game was the fantastic community on these boards, and the responces here have only underlined my initial opinion! Now to get buddy #1 on the forums so he can ask YOU folks silly newb questions (ie: Jap ecconomy, the glutton for punishment) instead of asking me and ME ending up posting here.

No, I will not be posting my (ok, our) shame, er... an AAR on our feeble attempts to run a campaign out-of-box. I'm sure you'll all figure out enough based on our cries for help here.

Thanks again all!
