as stated ealier today, Rennell Island was taken from the Yankees, and with severe losses of allied troops. This will free up some resources for the fight at Irau and elsewhere...
While losses in the air are staggering, some success was achieved though.

Next days most probably won´t be calm, since I am busy defending Irau and strengthen some other areas which could become future battlegrounds. Fortunately, Imperial High Command noticed the hair-trigger situation down in its possessions in the South and released some additional reinforcements. Of course I am aware these things are rather a drop in the bucket...

Stay tuned!

I hope one flattop less to provide CAP over the ships that are anchoring off Irau, once more in another try to bring in reinforcements...

As with so many issues, this has one good and one bad thing for both sides too. The good news for the Allies is that they now will save alot of Dakotas and Catalinas, since they aren´t longer needed for supplying the starving Rennell garrison...

several units were doomed to get trapped. They´re on their way into the famous prisons of Singapore now, where they will get food and other luxuries which weren´t available for them a couple of days yet... So Frank - better don´t sink any japanese transports anymore. You could kill your own POWs in doing so...

new turn - new action.

Another ScTF visited the allied beachhead at Irau last night, and some guns and Torpedoes were released on both sides... The US screening force wasn´t able to prevent my flotilla from sneaking into his transports. But the results could have been worse I think, considering the potential of destruction carried by the IJN units...

Tonight, CPT. Kogure had orders to fight the remaining allied ships off Irau. And quite a good job he did...
At day, despite bad weather, some allied heavy bombers took off from GG strips and bombed Russell harbour. There they found poor CV JUNYO, which was still repairing flood damage... Unfortunately the medium carrier sunk that afternoon. But I was unable to pull her out earlier since she would have most probably sunk anyway then. Her sys wasn´t too bad actually (65), but a waterlogged flattop is a very juicy target for the US subs around...

But revenge came right on - my bombers made short work of an allied cruiser/destroyer task force heading for Irau... I guess almost all vessels were sunk or are goners.

Due to the recent allied debacle in the Southern Solomons the VP situation swang back into a modest lead for the Japanese... now about 700p ahead of the Allies.

Certain allied losses en detail:

3500 A/C lost (IJN+IJA 3900)

4 CVE
2 BB (modern type)
9 CA
1 CL
50 DD
4 PG
14 APD (out of 17 available)
4 AV
3 DMS
1 DM
15 MSW (out of 20)
4 AO
1 TK
12 SS
53 PT
32 SC (out of 42)
86 transports (43 AP / 33 AK / 7 LST / 3 LCI)

I want to note that almost 20% of the ships (54 units of several type...) were lost to mines...

Turn 456... End of July 1943.
Some Vals finished stragglers limping back towards the Hebrides. IJA Helens tried to attack ships at Woodlark Island, of course in vain... These aircraft are close to teethless tigers.
Land combat situation unchanged. Still a heavy struggle without a winner.

I think I can add another heavy cruiser (along with two destroyers) to the already pretty nice "victims of Irau" list...

once more, the Imperial Japanese Navy found juicy targets off Irau. The last remnants of the allied transport were sent to the bottom.
At land, there occured something like "Zwei Dumme - ein Gedanke" (german saying, means something like "two idiots accidently came up with the same clue"). After several turns of infantry charges, now we both changed to artillery annoyance. But it seems the IJA mortars are a little bit more effective...

wow, now that hurts the allied war efforts. an entire division destroyed at rennel. congratulations to the empire!

Danke! But actually, we´re both halfway to hell... Despite the latest nice developments that led to the Japanese regaining a small edge in points, the overall situation is very tensed. Much will depend on the very next moves, the reinforcements, and replacements available in stock. At least the latter is an issue where the Allies are far, far ahead of the Japanese. Especially mines are almost "sold out" at Truk...

As said before, we´ll see! Many things can happen day by day, and there are still five months to go. I guess they will become the most cruel ones...

So lets ask Frank to contribute this to our AAR then.
Not much changed since my last statistics post above.

last turn a likely FT TF of DDs and a DMS met with some barges of mine at Irau, and three of these cutters sunk.

The Imperial Army at Irau is doing heroic efforts to push the intruders back into the sea. And they´re on the right way to succeed there too as they did at Rennell...

contrary weather is arising, so air ops should further wane. (last few turns already saw some decrease from the busy days before)

my opponent lost alot of C47 today once again, over a dozen are reported missing... His troops must be in serious desperation when they cry for the Dakotas now. They should know that pilots for the TCS squadrons have deserted and replacements are hard to find.
Only at night, in the bars of Noumea and Brisbane the allied GHQ can "recruit" some fearless rookies. The new slogan is "have a drink and sign "...
