nice air attacks. seems that the japs sushi air force still has some claws even in 1943.

Yeah, it really looks as I was able preserve some nice striking power in my Squadrons. We´ll see if it is enough to repel or at least grossly hinder my opponents expansion...

Also due to bad weather today, only two airstrikes found their mark this turn and the first pretty bold strike (some 6 Lily´s and 47 Vals) had no escort at all - oh my godness, what fools they are! Even more so considering the next "strike" of just nine Kates had more than enough fighters to go with...
though overall a/c losses get escalating by now, I don´t worry much about. Stocks are fine and if I do not attack NOW, there will be no more chance to make some impact.
hundreds of mines again did a fine job and alot of enemy ship are burning hulks. It takes several minutes to go thru all the mine and shore-gun reports...

US SS GRENADIER had a field day and spent some fishes on ships along the road. The small CVL HOSHO is dead in the water and it doesn´t looks all too good for her...

Meanwhile, another allied heavy cruiser is reported sunk - CA AUSTRALIA slid under and is racing towards the bottom of the Pacific Ocean..

Now things are heating up even more. Frank is doing like the "Lernaean Hydra", if you fight one head, the trouble will double. Its seems he isn´t busy enough with Rennell and Irau alone, since he invaded Woodlark and tried for Nevea too last turn! But four landings at once must be too much, even for the powerful Allied forces at this stage of the game.

My surface fleet tried to interfere at the beachhead of Irau last night, this time with rather bad results. Actually, I was surprised still to find an enemy surface TF covering the hex after the heavy bomb rain of the last few days. And I remember BB MARYLAND was amongst them. Though some LL fishes found their mark, the impact was too cockeyed to go on further into the invasion TFs. These guys were still defending their troopships. And a good job they did. However, CA WICHITA sunk outright - as one IJN DD did. Next day another CA and DD of mine met their final destination... My tiny fleet got badly mauled.

Air attacks with long range LBA found some vessels making for Nevea - and released their deadly ordnance. That CVE was smashed to the bottom instantly. Other ships were hit too, and reportedly they left the area to get out of danger ("TF may not unload here and now").
More enemy ships were reported sunk, alot of APs and warships made it onto the list today... Amongst those victims is SS GRENADIER, which was sunk from remaining DDs of this bunch that fought at Irau. At least some relief!

Wow, how intense this struggle is getting now... !

next turn was rather "quiet"... at least almost no air action due to bad weather. An IJN bombardment force received a welcome from PT boats and -damn!- one BB caught a fish. As I found out later my mishap isn´t severe, with no flooding at all and very slight sys damage.
My subarines were able to achieve some success too and two enemy transports were attacked & torpedoed. More ships were reported sunk today. Though no reason to cheer all too loud (since the enemy should have tons of ships to his avail) I am quite happy about this.

Again Thunderstorms ruled the skies instead of a/c... So I used the wuthering weather to sneak into Irau anchorage one more time... And TANAKA RAIZO did a superb job! Not only he dodged almost all the enemies shells (16" amongst them), he also delivered a hammering blow to the enemy fleets. After the inital battle with the Allied cover fleet he crushed into his transports and caused alot of chaos there.

Meanwhile another bombardment group made its presence well known to the GIs at Rennell. Besides well over a dozen Corsairs were gutted in flames and more damaged, enemy troops faced alot of destruction... I think they get in trouble now.

last turns saw intense struggle for three islands at once.
After the the Allied Flattops were out of sight for a few days (rebuilding the depleted airgroups I guess) they got back into the game now, staying out of range SSE of the southern Solomons.
My a/c and the IJN is still busy dealing with the Allied onslaught, with some success I think. Snapped radio traffic suggests that the US are desperately crying for reinforcements, since the whole operation came at a hurting price so far. Ship losses are severe and not only is Irau still in Japanese control, their new "base" Rennell is in heavy trouble now. The (over 80) Corsairs and other A/C were pulled out just two days after they were marshalled to this strip. I guess they´re just out of supply and the Dakota squads are blast out of the skies daily. And the IJA is on it´s way of re-capturing this island from the intruders!

IJN surface operations continue to mop up all enemy fleets in the vicinity... And the countless minefields take their toll despite utmost efforts of anti-mine craft.

Allied ship losses reported for the last two days:

4 Escorts (SC)
6 AP
4 AK
2 AO
2 APD
4 MSW
1 DMS
1 DD

Especially all those VPs of all these naval assets lost for the Allies brought the Imperial forces back into a slight 350 points lead Of course there are alot of A/C shot down, in slight favour for the Allies with their now superior planes.

Turn No. 449 - bad weather prevented any significant air ops. But it gave way for another bombardment run on Rennell, which I guess is almost ripe to fall back home soon.
The struggle for Irau ist still rather even, both sides fighting to gain ground. At least the allies didn´t brought enough troops to endanger my garrison here.

Woodlark is lost, what makes overall situation worse. But my old friend Adm. Yonai Mistumasa back in Tokyo forwarded kinda plan for this issue already...

One enemy DD is reported sunk, while I lost one goner of the doomed APs which try to crawl back to port.

Two...three weeks left for me to hit the nail on the head. Our spy at Pearl has reported some fleet leaving southbound...

Of course I agree no mine defensive can repel an inasion alone. But these eggs can hurt alot and in the right amount (over 10,000) they can really cause a true chaos amongst the intruders.
Considering my opponenent had even attached enough & proper mine-sweeping craft but lost that many ships though, I wonder what would happen without these tiny but precious MSW & DMS vessels... So I always try to sink as many as possible as soon as possible. This can hamper such landing ops in the later game at least to some degree.

One of the biggest problems w/ UV was mine warfare. Unfortunately, it was never resolved by limiting the number or mines, respawning msws, etc. It can almost ruin a game.

another day passed by... with rather mixed results. While Franks carrier air arm pounded my convoi that brought reinforcements I caught one of his FT TFs at Rennell. Both actions led to the loss of ships, but wondrously no troops were lost. So I have to suspect he´s about to pull out of Rennell...
Meanwhile, the attack on my Transport TF cost me another couple of APs...

Bad weather still impedes any bold air engagements.

rather disappointing to see all those monster guns killed just one out of three tiny nutshells... However, always a delight to have some action

this war truly is a tough struggle!
While our A/C are still hampered by the lousy weather, the land battle continues. And it doesn´t look very good for the GIs down in the Southern Solomons.
Some Vals tried feeble-minded attacks on the Allied Carriers and of course were fend off. But my opponent is loosing countless transport planes (Dakotas and Catalinas) day by day over Rennell... And my naval guns are working over this island relentlessly, with quite an impact. One night ago another two US APDs fell victim to my fleet, adding them to the wreck list. They were lonely out on a suicide mission. Again, I wondered since it seemed they had no troops on board (at least no troop losses reported). What were they intended for?

We´ll see who is able to pour sufficient forces into the theatre to win at least this fiery phase of the campaign.

the allied desperation is such that they even stripped Northern Oz and Port Moresby, Buna and Dobadura of all aircraft...! Only GG and Lae have active airstrips in PNG at the moment.

I do not need any aircraft in that area right now. Everything the Enemy has is located in the Solomons. PM, Buna and Dobadura are well supplied so no activity necessary there. No need for CAP fighters as I´m sure that the Japanese will not divert any forces to attack me there and if they do I would appreciate the relief at the Solomons front

Well looking at the overall statistics tells me that this picture can be seen more than tree times the number in Japanese Camps...

Well, the situation is desperate nevertheless. At Irau the Japanes were able to send fresh troops. Their transports won´t come home again but the damage is done. Up to now I was able to reduce the fortification there from 9 to 5 even with 0 to 1 assault odds. But now I think I´m stuck there.
At Rennel the situation has been relieved a little bit. The enemy already was able to get 2 to 1 assault odds with 0 Fortification. But I was able to bring enough Supplies and a few fresh troops even under daily bombardment and also to build up the fortification again to keep the Island for a couple of days more.

All in all there is no doubt that the whole solomons campaign so far is a defeat for me even If I take Irau which is most unlikely right now. It really seems that I found one of the hardest spot in the enemy's defence.

But on the other hand: If I count the enemy troops involved plus the troops he already lost and then take a look at my intel (OOB) I think there is maybe a weak spot somewhere else....
