Vehicles lost 1

Airbase hits 5
Airbase supply hits 6
Runway hits 93

Port fuel hits 7
Port supply hits 9

Tomorrow my ground forces attack Rangoon. This should see the defenders sufficiently attrited that Rangoon falls easily. Since I'm planning to move on to India quickly I won't go for Shock Attacks, I'll simply deliberate attack to prevent unnecessary casualties.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 51 encounters mine field at Palembang [Sumatra] (20,55)

Allied aircraft losses
I-16 Type 4: 3 destroyed

Resources hits 72

A 1% loss rate is well within the 3% loss rate above which these missions are no longer useful as training exercises. So, really, these raids against Chungking are an absolute bargain--- I'm achieving major strategic objectives and training some 300 bombers at the same time.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Amboina [Ambon] , at 40,74

Ki-21-II Sally: 2 destroyed, 2 damaged

Hmm, very little is being achieved here... I can't figure out why my bombers appear to be hitting NOTHING at all.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Japanese Ships
DD Hatsuharu

DD Fumizuki, Bomb hits 1, on fire

Aha, a day after I mention it here and 2 months after the war starts 2ndACR finally sends in his Pe-2s over the ceiling of my CAP. Wakaba is doomed but her sacrifice gives me the notice I need to pull the rest of my ships out of range.

Allied ground losses:
810 casualties reported
Guns lost 14

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

The Soviets are pushed out an while many of the resources are damaged the HI is relatively intact adding another 360+ HI to my industry. EXCELLENT !!!! I'm having a major HI squeeze at the moment and have over 300 points of armament production stopped ( and even that's not enough ). Once I get into India I should add another 1500+ HI and that should really begin to ease my problems.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Japanese max assault: 16 - adjusted assault: 20

Allied max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1

Japanese assault odds: 20 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Toungoo [Burma] base !!!

120 OIL points fall into my hands. Score !!!

The whole aim of my war plan is to capture enough HI and OIL etc that I don't have to spend much supply on repairing what I capture ( since even if half of what I capture is damaged I will STILL capture more than I need ) or much supply on expanding what I begin with but up until now I still haven't broken the 13,000 HI mark. I can't wait to get into India as there's about 1500 HI just waiting to be captured there and I'm quite prepared to do the capturing and, finally, turn my war economy fully on.

The lack of CAP over Rangoon leaves a couple of my ships vulnerable to enemy strikes. Still, my losses in invading Rangoon have been absolutely miniscule so far so this doesn't even cut into my excess transport capacity.

This is an extremely interesting combat result as it offers up the possibility of taking Java with the forces I already have committed there. So, the plan to commit an additional 2,000 AV to landing at Kragen are scrubbed and, instead, full-scale loading is begun for the invasion of India. An additional 2,000 AV is ordered to begin loading on my transports and is now to be accompanied by the full scale of supporting troops ( 400 Aviation Support and multiple engineer regiments ).

At present I am considering plans to neutralise the enemy's airfields at Ceylon. I think that I will swap out the Val divebombers from my CVs and replace them with Kates. Then I can launch the Kates from a range of 420 miles ( safely outside of the range of the enemy Pe-2s ) and pulverise the airfields.... If, for some reason, that fails I can always send in my BBs and CAs to close both enemy airfields with naval bombardments ( which will be effective but costly given the presence of massive enemy coastal defences ).

Rangoon falls. Half of Burma is already in my hands. He really must have concentrated everything in India. A good move but I think not keeping the roads open in order to evacuate massive numbers of Chinese troops into India is, IMO, a mistake.

Damn, just missed a 3:1 which would have let me capture this base and destroy, on the ground, the planes based here. Ah well, it still will force the Dutch to retreat in the direction I wish ( along the nicely accessible eastern coastal road in Java ) and so it still serves its main purpose.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/13/42

Magwe secured 120 OIL sources and a nice Level 3 airfield aimed directly at Calcutta. Understandably enough 2nd ACR wanted to close it. I anticipated this and had some Zeroes waiting which did well, but not well enough. Tomorrow he'll meet twice as many and then in another day's time another 50 fighters ( Oscars since I don't have enough Zeroes ) will be added to that number.

AG RTN Cuong, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

More minesweeping by AG. I've got to admit that since these AGs are so plentiful and easily replaced I find it amusing when they hit mines. I probably have more AGs in action than he has mines at my ports.

Hmm, a single British Brigade in good, wooded terrain and behind reasonable forts manages to muster sufficient AV that it would take 3 divisions to shift. I may just bypass Akyab by now. I've operated in the seas off Burma for the past two weeks now and done everything I can to draw his attention here --- but I'm sure he still expects me to go for Ceylon. There's little point in further deceptive manoeuvring at this point. Instead I'm going to head for Ceylon ASAP from now... Four and a half IJA divisions ( plus support elements ) are loading at Rangoon in order to join with the forces moving up from Singapore. That's a total of about 350 transports on their way to Ceylon, pretty damned impressive even if I do say so myself.

I thought I should give an update on the Indian invasion force. Currently I have the following forces loaded up and in transit to India:

1. 15 Infantry Divisions : 2, 4, 5, 16, 18, 31, 33, 38, 48, 51, 52, 54, 200, 201st & Imperial Guards

2. 3 Infantry Brigades

3. 8th Tank Regiment ( the other Tank units are in Siberia or Burma )

4. 3 Major Army HQs and about 5 smaller Army HQs.

5. 10 Engineer Regiments

6. 10 AAA units ( to protect my landing beach )

7. Assorted Aviation and Air HQ units.

In total some 260,000 men are loaded up and ready to invade.

They will be supported by 6 Tank units driving upwards from Burma, 2 Airborne Bns and 2 Airlanding Bdes.

The naval component will comprise 8 BBs, 14 CAs, about 20 CLs and 70 or so DDs. In addition there will be a minimum of 60 or so smaller vessels ( DEs, DMS, MSW, PC, PG etc ) to escort the 360+ transports. CAP will be provided by 4 CVEs, 2 CVLs and 4 CVs who are swapping their Vals out for Kates in order to be able to stand off outside of Pe-2 range and bomb the enemy airfields using level bombing tactics ---- they will be aided and abbetted in this by 200+ G4Ms operating out of Tavoy and Rangoon in the level bombing role.

In short, even if the enemy opposes my landing forces all the way ( and I expect him to ) I expect to be able to provide so many targets that no significant losses are incurred before the unloading is completed ( most of my troops are loaded on 1,000 to 2,000 ton APs and AKs in order to expedite unloading.

What kind of forces can the allies bring to bear defensively in this mode? Seems like 15 divisions is a mighty big stick. I know there'd be no way to stop that this early in stock; are there enough new toys in this mod that the allies have a fighting chance, or is his best play here just to bleed you on the landing and then evac for aden?

You really have beaten allied side to submission!

As for the India adventure and judging by the game date 2/1942 I'am certain India will be pushover. My estimate is that within 2 months 90% of India has fallen. Unless (SEAC) ofcourse allies have signifcantly more ground units (divisions, brigades) than allied do have in stock.

Well, in this mod the Japanese start with two additional divisions and get an additional 4 divisions after gamestart. The Americans alone get 4 or so additional divisions so it balances out fairly well. In addition the Japanese have to buy ALL of these additional divisions out of the Home Islands ( since all these units start out assigned to the Home Islands HQs ) and the Japanese are fairly strapped for PPs.

As to the 15 divisions... Well, 13 of these divisions are present in stock so, really, I'm not invading with much additional force. I haven't, for example, taken a single unit from Manchukuo ( although I have robbed a couple of divisions from China )... I have taken the Pacific VERY much on the cheap and the loss of the US CVs has helped me tremendously in this --- I have 50 G4Ms, 60 Zeroes and 24 Mavis in the entire Pacific which gives you an idea of just how thinly I am holding it since I managed to destroy his fleet ( at great cost ) in December 41 --- so one reason I am so strong is that several Bdes which should be in the Pacific are now on ships headed to India.

Can he hold against 15 divisions? No, I doubt it. If he transferred SEAC troops from China to India from the start of the game ( something I did when I played the Allies and something I felt was necessary to hold India ) then he could hold. My best intel is that he hasn't really reinforced India at all and so I epect it to fall relatively easily---- MUCH easier than it really should fall.

Those SEAC units aren't going to be much use in China since I'm in the process of bombing their supply generating zones back into the stone age and without supplies those additional divisions won't be able to accomplish anything.

I will point out that in this version of the mod the Allied fighter and key bomber replacement rates are 50% higher and the Japanese significantly weaker in terms of strategic bomber and anti-shipping forces than they were in the version of the mod I played in as the Allies and I still held on to India into July and August 1942. So, is it possible to hold India? Yes it is possible even when Japan is stronger and the Allies weaker than in this version of the mod. Do I think 2ndACR will? No, he has made some significant strategic errors and he is about to be fullsomely punished for them... I hope

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/19/42

I've skipped a few days forward as nothing much happened in these days. My divisions are rebuilding in the Soviet Union and Java while my resource bobing campaign continues in China. My carriers and troopships are gathering south-east of Ceylon and 2ndACR knows the hammer is about to fall. Interestingly enough a day ago he hazarded a guess that some 3,500 AV was about to hit India. Figuring that a little despair would be conducive to a rapid advance I pointed out that it was much more like 6,000 AV ( and it should really be more ). Hey, anything which gets him to cluster up in his major defended cities works massively to my advantage as I'll get the resources of the rest of the country ( my real goal ) in an almost undamaged state.

The really good news here is that 16 Pe-2s and 21 Spitfires were destroyed on the ground. That's a LOT of my CVs and fighters saved from certain destruction. Tomorrow I'm going to hit this area with Bettys and Nells ( suffering significant losses to be sure but c'est la guerre ) while my Kates divide their attention between the base and the nearby Allied shipping. At ALL times my forces will stay more than 6 hexes from both bases in Trincomalee until it is time to rush in and land on the raillines south-west of Colombo.

My CVs and Bettys will continue to hit ( and close ) Trincomalee while my bombardment TF ( 7 BBs and 8 CAs ) rushes in to close Colombo in order to cover the unloading of the 350,000+ troops. Circumstances will them dictate where I go from there.

Isn't it interesting how the raids on the airfield at PH suffer low losses while hitting the ground forces there causes significant loss. This is a consistent and repeatable finding. I think this must point to either:
a) different algorithms being used or
b) different supply levels for the Infantry divisions and the base.

The map shows my TFs approaching Ceylon. The bright green line shows the range of Pe-2s operating out of the bases in Ceylon while the dark green line shows their range if operating from MADRAS. As you'll note there is a single hex of Ceylon which is out of range of the enemy Pe-2s operating out of Madras if the two airbases on Ceylon are closed. This hex is where my troops will land... And, yes, it is fair to say that the Pe-2s have my scared silly. I don't mind losing a few transports to them but I won't lose CVs and CVLs to those monsters.

It'll all be decided ( bar the two months of shouting remaining in order to provide the conclusion to what is foregone ) over the next week. Landfall is expected to occur on 25th February.

I have a small transport TF there to lift the paras out of Kragen and land them behind the Dutch column retreating from Batavia. This will then give my 53rd Division an escape route. Unfortunately Singapore ran out of supplies just as I needed to airlift supplies into Kragen to keep 53rd Division combat-worthy.... Why has Singers run out of supplies? Well, I'm trying to run the invasion of India with just 60,000 tons of supplies to back my 15 combat Divisions ( so, I am bringing 1.33 combat loads of supplies - ( 1.33 x 2,200) x 15 ( + a small fudge factor for the engineers etc ). Usually one really needs two to three times the cobat load in order to be certain.... In fact bringing double the combat load is ESSENTIAL if one wants to Shock Attack. So, no Shock Attacks for me in Ceylon.

Why the lack of supplies? Well, my economy... I've had to reduce Zero production by 2/3rds, have patrol seaplane production and completely turn off 3 of my 4 transport plane types as I just don't have the supplies necessary to repair and upgrade everything I need.

This is great though overall as it really shows that an unfettered Japanese expansion can result in a crippled Japan and underpins just how tough it is to manage the economy in EA... I stopped just short of wrecking the economy though and with India soon to fall I should be out of trouble by the end of April.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/21/42

I'm seeing enemy CAs ( and probably BBs ) at Colombo. I have my BBs accompanying my shipping into Ceylon but expect the Royal Navy to try and escape. Accordingly I'm going to move my CVs into position to sprint northward for a day tomorrow and see if I can't pick up a few CAs and BBs in two days time.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/23/42

My dash to the north pays off with a nice ambush of the Royal Navy's battleline.

The expensive preparations carried out over Ceylon are also paying dividends as I have still only lost a single 1,000 ton AP. I expect more to follow it but at this stage my losses are running WELL below what I budgeted for for this operation.

Japanese aircraft losses

BB Warspite, Torpedo hits 7, on fire, heavy damage
BB Royal Sovereign, Torpedo hits 2
BB Resolution, Torpedo hits 6, on fire, heavy damage
CL Caledon, Torpedo hits 1, on fire

Ramilles, Resolution and Warspite sink immediately while Royal Sovereign and Caledon are left to limp back home. Not a bad day's work - 3 BBs, 1 CA and 1 CL sunk with another BB and CL seriously damaged. That's the threat to my landings from surface raiders removed from the picture.

It is all going nicely and smoothly so far with my troops expected to begin landing tomorrow morning and losses, so far, negligible ( 1 x 1,000 ton AP ). I was chafing at the delays leading up to this invasion but the smoothness of the actual landings tends to show it was worth it.

CL Colombo sak later but I really am surprised at the lack of aircraft destroyed. I don't really know what to make of it - except to think that the 2 DDs must have absorbed most of my BB ammo and thus the bombardment was quite anemic.

That's a LOT of troops. Unfortunately I doubt he has the supplies to feed those troops. So, end result is going to be an adjusted AV of only 1,000 which then has to be re-adjusted for low morale, experience and leadership. So, it should be doable. The trick is to do it at a low cost to my infantry divisions.

Madras is also easy pickings.

My landings went in today just south-west of Colombo. Most of my supplies are not yet ashore BUT 3,998 AV of troops are ashore. I have 124,000 men ashore at the end of day one and another 130,000 or so to land --- mostly support troops.

Ah, the B-19s strike again. I think he loves having these. He uses them at every opportunity.

I would, too! Victories for the Allies are few and far between at this point.

Hmm, he must be testing my defences a little. 2ndACR commented that my perimeter must be weak given the number of G4Ms operating in Burma. I pointed out that I have 200 committed to the Pacific and then I began to see shipping popping up all over the map. Some US ships popped up north of Oz, south of Noumea, east of Luganvilla and south and east of Palmyra. He's DEFINITELY testing my defences. I have G4 or G3s at Kendari, Luganville and Palmyra but for some reason none flew yesterday. Today only one group flew. Damnit this unwillingness to attack is annoying.

I guessed that the Allies might try to reinforce Noumea at this time and sent a surface strike group in just in case. Results were gratifying. Unfortunately my powerful combat force only managed to sink 2 DD and the President Polk. The enemy retreat but not before rescuing members of 2nd USMC Division from the water. Well, I'd rather face them here ( in what is, after all, merely a noisy ( albeit ultra-cheap )diversion designed to draw American troops into action far away from the critical theatre, India ) than in the theatre of decision.

Damn, I sent the Kates in at 8,000 feet instead of the 14,000 I had intended and they got butchered. Why? Well, The British have 4 main types of AA. MGs top out at 2,000 feet, the 40mm AA tops out at 7,000 and the medium AAA tops out at 13,000. Only heavy AAA can hit me above 13,000. Unfortunately at 8,000 the medium AAA rips lightly built planes apart.

Ceylon hasn't been cheap in terms of damage to warships, either. Well, at least you don't have to worry much about the RN surface fleet . . .

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/01/42

Well, everything costs. Overall my warship losses so far are 2 training CLs ( top speed 18 knots), 1 APD, 1 DMS and 1 DE. I've had damage to 1 BB, 3 CAs and 1 CL ( battleline capable ) and 3 or 4 DDs. That's pretty light given that the back of the enemy navy and strikegroups have been broken. Obviously though its a matter of perspective. I think the cost is worth it, others may not.

No, it is still ongoing but since no-one but me had posted here for quite some time I figured there wasn't enough interest to warrant the time spent updating a daily AAR.

Basically all that's happened over the past 3 weeks is that Japanese Army forces have suffered about 40,000 casualties at Sian, I've taken Soerabaja and Ceylon and I've landed some 6,000+ AV in India and am driving on Cochin and Madras. My economy is also finally coming out of melt-down as I reduce its industrial expansion and manage to build up a little surplus.

Oh I pretty much destroyed the rest of the RN fleet and for the past week all I've run into are SCs, PCs and, I think, 1 DD running for its life.

I was reading this quite closely actually; your AARs are always a lot of fun and usually quite different from the run of the mill.

Certainly make me happy at least if you could find the time to resume regular updates.

Never played WITP but as a lurker I was also enjoying reading you AAR and find your strategic insight very impressive. If you have the time please keep posting reports.

It's one of my "must read"s on lunchtime. Hope you could find some time to continue with AAR, especially strategic/economic planning part.
