Ok, I'm surprised so many people actually posted. In light of that I'm happy to continue this albeit that things are on a bit of a slower pace while I finish crushing John3rd's Rebels at Gettysburg .

I'll post a screencapture of India over the next day or two and discuss the economic situation as really that was teetering on the edge for quite a few months and is finally moving in the right direction. With that said though moving in the right direction isn't the same as "I can build whatever I need".

It appears you have a fan club nemo, albeit upto now a closet one

Lack of response in AAR's is a bit uninspiring to put it mildly, but frankly
i have absolutely no advice to give. Your coverage pretty much removes the need for
a "what's happening in xyz?"type question. But i'll make an effort in the future just so you know there are a few of us having a darn good read. Thank you for carrying on.

Ah well a day or two turned into a couple of months.

Basically it is now 4th May 1942. Bombay has just fallen to my forces and about 1,200 AV of Allied troops have been chewed up and spat out by the victorious IJA. Enemy forces have made several daring surface raids and transport runs into Koumac and the number of POWs ( umm, I mean Allied troops ) there has increased to just under 900 AV. I continue to pour troops in also but am building up a significant surface fleet to transport them to the real targets when the time comes.

The IJN is repairing at a rapid rate and, already, I am able to put 3 CVs and 2 CVLs into action around Koumac. I haven't used them for anything other than sub-hunting yet but their time will come. So far 2ndACR doesn't seem to have asked himself just why he is having so much success running troops and supplies into Koumac in the face of strong IJN and IJA aerial forces when much smaller IJN and IJA forces in India have utterly crucified every resupply/reinforcement effort from Aden over the past 2 months. He really should ask himself this.

Forces in the Northern Route are being slowly strengthened and in about 45 to 50 days time I think my naval forces will be in sufficient repair to begin another 2 to 3 months of intensive campaigning. What is 2ndACR doing? He's trying to threaten me in China, hunkering down in his fortified bases in India and in the Soviet Union appears to be prepping for an assault through Borzya ( which I should handily counter ). He is also putting pressure on my holdings in the Aleutians but I think that my fighters should prove sufficient to hold him off once I can get Ki-109s into action over my Northern Route bases.

Apart from that not much else is happening. He's probably eyeing Java from Oz but to attempt this would be nothing but suicide on his part. He should also evacuate New Zealand but I doubt that's going to happen.

Some excellent play -- but a disturbing echo of modern-day events . . .

There was an opportunity to kill a BB and some other ships around Noumea on the 6th so I took it. My CVs unmasked and sank the Royal Navy BB Lion, a CA and a CL. One CL and a few DDs escaped. There's about 900 AV trapped in Noumea now.

In other news I'm moving on Ahmadabad and Karachi in India and I've managed to sneak forces in behind the 3000 AV of Soviet forces at Blago. So, things are going nicely and well. It is now 7th May 1942.

Well, I wouldn't want to update too often so a month and a half have gone by.

In that time my invasion of India continues apace with Allied forces trapped in four pockets at Madras, Karachi, Delhi and Calcutta. None of the pockets is sufficiently strong to survive a significant Japanese assault so in another 6 weeks India will be completely mine. I'll be ready to move onward by the end of July 1942 and then some 4,000 additional AV will be available to really make things happen in the Pacific.

In Java things remain entirely unchanged without even a move on Timor to show for the last couple of months. This is entirely intentional though. At Exmouth a daring Japanese airborne assault captured the base. Immediately 2 Bdes of infantry were flown in and Zeroes and H8K2s took up station and began discomfiting the Allies. Over the course of several brave but doomed raids almost 30 B-17s were downed trying to close Exmouth. At present Exmouth is on its way to be a Level 4 airfield in a great position to strangle shipping into and out of Perth.

Noumea fell in a single day when the attack came. Some 1800 AV of Japanese troops quickly overwhelmed 3 NZ Bdes and the US Americal Division. Next it will be time to make my moves on NZ, spend planes and ships in wearing down his defences and then move somewhere else entirely.

Elsewhere my training regime is paying off and I am slowly but surely managing to rotate 1 graduated Zero group into each theatre and withdraw other groups. In effect this means I replace 150 or so Zeroes of 70 Exp with 40 Zeroes of 90+ Exp. My losses fall and Allied losses rise but the number of ops I can escort per turn also drops dramatically. At this point in time with the lower tempo which is present this isn't too serious a problem.

Production:
I'm about to begin producing about 70 Ki-264 Angels per month, am ramping up production for the Ki-44 III in 8 months time and am just about to bring the 2nd Yamato class CVA into service. KB is finishing its rest and refit cycle and is almost ready to go to see again with its newly trained pilots. It should rule the sea wherever it sails.

For those who count that sort of thing Japan has about 51,000 points and the Allies have about 10,500. Once India fully falls I expect the gap to rise to about 53,000 vs 9,000. But, to be clear, the points have no bearing on when this game ends. This game will end when the Allies land on the Japanese mainland and not before ( excepting of course if things are utterly hopeless ).

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/02/42

The Allies are getting frisky with a recent attempt to build Lihue into a major base- resulting in about a half-dozen sunk AKs and APs to their forces - and multiple attacks in the north and south of the Pacific. I'm happy to allow these attacks as it gives me a chance to inflict disproportionate loss on the enemy. In India Karachi should fall in the next couple of days.

There's only a single Regiment of Allied infantry supported by a Bn of tanks and lots of support troops in Karachi. This is fortunate for me as their basic AV is boosted tenfold by all the defensive bonuses they get. My plan of drawing the Allies out of position and cutting them into 4 or 5 pockets throughout India, allowing me to mass and overwhelm each pocket in succession, has worked well. It took a bit longer but I think it is going to prove well worth it in the long run. I've already destroyed 1500 AV in several pockets and it looks like I have another 2000 or so AV pocketed up and awaiting destruction.

In the picture you can see the surviving Allied pockets in India ( although Karachi is off-map ) which gives you a foretaste of what is going to happen over the next month or so.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/05/42

Preparations continue apace at Noumea for the second great Japanese offensive. I am committing all but 54 G4Ms and almost my entire force of Navy fighters to this mission. I am also committing over 6 CVs ( including my only serviceable CVA ), 4 CVLs and all my available BBs to this operation. Over 100 transports stand ready to transport the troops at Noumea ( just under 2,000 AV of hardened combat troops ) to their targets.

My plan is to smash Fiji and NZ with CV-based fighter sweeps before sending in hordes of long-range G4Ms to attack the ports. I'm hitting the other island simply to prevent the Allies using it to launch major forays into my SLOCs. My troops will then splash ashore and, with a little luck, will have the numbers to overwhelm the enemy forces. It is going to be damned bloody but with things in India winding down ( only 4 pockets remain to be eradicated ) I can afford to incur the losses this operation will entail.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/09/42

Well today was a good deal. I can see lots and lots of Allied planes concentrated in New Zealand and I'm sure the Allied navy and a goodly portion of its army are also there. Obviously there's no way I'm going for NZ but it has been a rather grand ( and it seems succesful ) maskirovka. I'll further it by taking Norfolk Island and making a few small raids on NZ with carriers before hitting my real targets.

Geez, it's reading AARs like this that make me realize how far away from being competitive in a PBEM against a good IJN player I am. I have no idea what I would be doing in 2ndACR's position.

stuman,

Well I'm not sure I'd label myself a good player but I would point out that this whole good IJN or good US player is simply a fallacy. If someone has a good grasp of the basics of strategy etc then they'll be good no matter which side they play.

And now back to our usual programming

There we go, Norfolk's fallen.

I have spotted a convoy approaching NZ from the east. Could these be reinforcements? Well, only one way to find out.... I fly 48 Kates onto my CVs and send my CVs south.

We'll see what tomorrow brings. Either way this will look as though I'm trying to prevent reinforcements reaching NZ when, in fact, I' happy for anything to reach NZ as NZ is not the fulcrum or this theatre.

The submarine-based interdiction of Allied shipping channels continues. So far the IJN submarine force is having a pretty good war. By staying away from enemy bases only their ship-based ASW has to be feared and that is not, yet, all that potent as the ships, while technically well-equipped are not yet sufficiently experienced.

And once she has been damaged my torpedo bombers swarmed the cripple and took her down. By day's end Hornet slips beneath the waves. Now with my CVs about the rush in the Americans are bound to try to run away towards Oz ---- and into the arms of the Musashi TF. With a little luck I could take out the 2nd CV. As a result of an operation which is only a maskirovka that would be quite welcome.

My invasion TFs are almost loaded and once I take care of the enemy CVs and battleline around NZ my CVs will move to cover the invasion fleets.

In other news I've finally managed to cut most of the Soviet army off from its main base at Ulan Ude. It may not stay cut off but I'm hoping it'll push 2ndACR into a precipitous retreat.

Unfortunately 2ndACR has to withdraw due to some real life issues... No opprobium attaches to this choice at all.

So, we have 4 options:
1. The game ends here and now.

2. A suitably brave player or group of players ( Alfred, Hartwig etc? ) seeks to turn the Allied fortunes around. If the Allies make it into 1943 then the Japanese are pretty much doomed.

3. I take over the Allied side and with a suitable period of time to allow for rebuilding ( perhaps a month ) since the Allies are in rather nasty shape right now we recommence the game and fight it out.

4. We jump back a little in time.

Personally I don't care about winning, I just want to be pushed to play my best so I'm perfectly happy to take over the Allied side and take things from there.

I should point out that the Allied side in this game is significantly reinforced over the Allied side in the game I have with Damian. They have increased fighter reinforcement rates, better and quicker upgrades and more flexible upgrade paths. So, the Allied position is far from hopeless as it is.

I would like to invite people or groups of players who are interested in playing on to let me know in this thread. My preference would be to play on as Japan but I would be willing to play on as Allies given a sufficient breathing space to conduct some much-needed redeployment or the ability to step 1 to 2 months back in the past before some irredeemable errors were made. All would be up for negotiation.

In the end the Allies will win. They are just too strong in 1943 and 1944 for this not to be the outcome and, properly managed, the Allies can even be winning by end-42. I repeat that the Allied position is far from hopeless, it just requires some ruthlesness.

So, no takers to take over as Japan with a 55000+ to 10,000 victory point lead in June 1942? That's a pity.

Sorry to see the game end , while your mod, while a great read isn't for me as a player. Sadly i had to bail on 2ACR for rl problems a year or so back. I wish him well whatever they maybe.

Nemo,

I might consider taking over the Allied side to get a spanking. I learned a lot from most spankings I received in my life . I only ask myself "am I up to the task"... There are several caveat, however:

1) Right now, I will be S L O W. Cannot guarantee more than 2-3 turns per week. This should get better by the end of March though.
2) Not sure whether this would be much fun to you - I do not think I am a good or experienced player. On the other hand, with a bunch of seasoned advisors...
3) Can you link me to the detailed info on this mod, including what I need to do to install ? I have never played anything but vanilla so far...
4) Could you provide a file for the Allied a) for the point of time this game is at and b) a point of time you are thinking about moving back to ? I'll pm my e-mail to you.

To sum up: If you wish to keep this game alive and are not bothered by 1) a slow game and 2) a not very seasoned opponent but avid learner (as I understand from your AARs, you comment in interplayer-communication, which I appreciate a lot), I will consider taking over.

Regards

Hartwig

Hartwig... Email sent.  Slow isn't a problem. I have Real Life ( which always comes first ), another PBEM game and a testing committment so a slow game sounds just fine.

Advisors... Absolutely, have as many as you think is a good idea.

Best link for the mod is http://sites.google.com/site/empiresablaze/ which, I think, explains the concepts behind it.

All I can say is WOW, your a great player Nemo I just uploaded this mod and am looking for an opponent. I hope I fair better than your opponent did. I hope to play allies only due to the learning curve for Japan.

This mod has some great "what ifs" added to it. It also demands someone with a good grasp on the Japanese economy and knows how to use Tracker to aid in managing it.

I'm looking forward to this mod being modified for AE when it comes out.

Miller,

No, not a great player, just someone who applies the basics thoroughly. Good luck in your game with BlitzK.

Interesting data so far on my new opponent - Hartwig... I've read all of his posts obviously and between his posts and his mails there are some interesting indicators. There have been mentions of, and links to, articles on CI ( crowd intelligence ) and not just the usual BS about the intelligence of crowds ensuring accuracy which is what we see in the mass media and elsewhere but also a rather more nuanced view of the potential perils of same.

Here's an interesting question he posed to me tonight as part of the discussion on rules
quote:

b) Do you know the solution for the world's most complicated chess problem ? I ask this because it is related to doing a "turn 1" (even if this is not the real turn 1, it is for me). It starts from the starting position of the pieces and is "White to move and win..." Let me know when you solved it...

This is, IMO, a nice little ploy to start getting to know me. Obviously it was important to give a reasonable answer without going into too much detail so here's what I replied:

quote:

b) The solution to that problem is the same as the solution to ANY chess problem, "Get to know your opponent and then cause dis-ease in his mind such that he defeats himself."

So, he wants to read me. M'uadib would be proud of him. 10 sci-fi geek awards for knowing the novel and 40 more for knowing which part of the novel I'm referencing ( hint: knife-fighting ).

The interesting question now is going to be just how he plays. He will, undoubtedly, single in on the DEI and the northern routes as good avenues of attack. Which of those he chooses will tell me a lot PARTICULARLY if he plays beneath his ability to try to anchor my expectations lower.

It can be quite tricky to discern if someone is just playing badly and that's the best they can do or if he's actually making intentional mistakes. I think though that if he plays well with the occasional foolish move then he is trying to anchor me low...

So, what does this mean? Well, he'll try to anchor my expectations low so that I become lax. What this means is that he'll probably try for ineffectual strikes on Exmouth followed by a raid on the DEI ( where I have left isolated bases rather unthreatened just to tempt this sort of ineffectual loss-leading enterprise ).

Since I can't really be bothered into letting him have significant forces transitting into the DEI right now I'll have to take that little atoll to the wet of Ceylon and base seaplanes there. I'll be happy to let him range up past Exmouth as that's a mis-allocation of force.

In the north I'll commit small garrisons to my holdings and begin building up the necessary forces for a stronger naval and aerial defence.

In the south my previous plan ( minus he NZ sweep which now has no operational surprise to bolster it ) will be carried out and the remainders of the Pacific will fall to my troops.

In China he should redeploy his forces westward into Vietnam. This should give me an opportunity for offensive action and I need to make sure to take this.

So, a big state of flux in which he'll be trying to mislead me as to his ability by playing slightly worse at the front lines while he gets his rear echelons into gear at top speed. Should be interesting.

So, quite a bit has happened in the past week of gametime.

Hartwig has ruthlessly exploited the leeway I gave him to bomb from Soviet bases ( which due to a game bug I can't retaliate against ) and he is trying many other tricks elsewhere to free up the situation ( landing a few troops outside of Bombay to try and free the troops there from their sitzkrieg ).

He is also most assuredly testing my defences elsewhere. I've gotten sniffs of merchant vessels all along my perimeter trying to see what my recon shell is like and how far he can expect to get when spotted. I've been watching and waiting for the past few days, letting them get in deep before launching co-ordinated attacks to kill as many as I can. Today my forces strike...

Hartwig's new "strategy" is to land troops using barges ( or small, damaged AKs and APs) at bases anywhere along my lines in an effort to annoy me to death. This, unfortunately, costs him ships and troops and, to be honest, trying to "annoy" an opponent with strategically meaningless landings is piss-poor strategy.

He's going to miss those ships in a year's time when he has the troops and planes to support major amphibious landings.

In other news in a couple of days time I'll have the last of the shipping I need in place at Noumea to perform the series of amphibious landings I have planned to take all of the necessary islands in the south-eastern Pacific. --- My recent CV raids have been aimed at preventing any last-minute reinforcements to the first phase of islands which will be invaded and appear to have been successful in that aim. The next stage is to land and overwhelm the ground defenders. It'll cost but it'll be worth it. Once I have Bora Bora and Papaete I'll be able to really prevent USN meddling in the Pacific --- which will give me the ability to focus on the Soviet Union and Australia - which are the next targets for amphibious invasion.
