Have to disagree on the Tones. It looked like someone dropped the deuce on the forecastle and didn't pick it up.

Agreed w/ bradfordkay on the Gneisenaus.

Oh, I definitely couldn't agree with that. The sleek forecastle is part of what stood out. The whole ship seemed to have a very low profile.

It's a pity that everybody seems to ignore the French. For my two cents (Note: I'm just rating looks, to my personal taste!):

CV: Shokaku. Nice, clean lines. Maybe Taiho and the British armoured CV's, especially Indefatigable.

CA: Algerie (France). The County-class ships are quaintly old-fashioned, like those pseudo-gothic Victorian public buildings. The Italian CA's have this boxy superstructure that I don't like. The Hipper class look unproportioned; the hull seems too short.
CL: the La Galissonniere class (France). Perhaps Leipzig (Germany), low-slung ship that looked rather more effective than it was.
All US cruisers look merely utilitarian, like pickup trucks.

DD: Close run, but I'd go with Shimakaze (that elegant bow!), Le Terrible (France), Karl Galster (Germany). Maybe the British J class. US destroyers are functional and lumpy rather than good-looking, and the Sumner and Gearing classes look like they're buried under those twin turrets to boot.

Hit the nail on the head there for me. I like that sort of look about them, almost classical looking in their construction.

Generally I don't really rate most of the US ships either (cruisers or otherwise).

EDIT: Most of the RN CLs, whilst not ugly are not good looking either. The exception to this is the Edinburgh class which is a hideous looking ship IMO.

For me the Littorios' appearance is spoiled by the oversize X turret barbette.

mikemike knows a good ship when he sees one: Algerie.

I also find the Kongo a handsome ship class, in final form.

But it's hard to beat Salmon and Gluck for looks, even if 11 inch is a piddling main battery calibre.

Personally, I love the fact that each country had its own design 'look'. As an American, I always loved the look of these two...

Agree. Beauty is in the the eye of the beholder. And isn't it just so cool that each country had it's own concept of nautical pulchritude!

This is a great thread. Ciao.

Why don't I like the Japanese ships?

Let's start with the Yamato... a vertical tower in the forward superstructure immediately followed by a sloping funnel. This disparity breaks up the lines and diminishes her beauty.

The Fuso/Yamashiro superstructures look like they were built by a two year old with leggo building blocks - just way too "busy" to be considered beautiful.

I suppose I should mention that to me, beauty is best found in clean, simple lines.

The CL has got something about her, but this CA is butt-ugly! (I guess this is why you should never show people pictures of your kids or pets...)

One of the best destroyer of WW II: the french "le Fantasque" as well as its sisters le Triomphant, le Malin, le Terrible, l'Indomptable and l'Audacieux were considered as light cruisers.
They were able to reach 45 knots.

French Destroyers take a lot of of beating in the operational capabilities department as well as looks. I still think the early Counties have it overall, but I'd go with the Frogs for the Destroyer category. Renown was a mightily handsome Battle Cruiser. Does anyone remember the Sig Yava used to use that Dixie did for him? It was a colourised photograph of a camouflaged Renown - absolutely beautiful...

I've sort of got a tie.

CL Yubari and the BB Ise/Hyuga (Pre-rediculous mini flight deck).

To me their unique looks are what make them beautiful.

I went to the museum in Bremerhaven when I was about 10. I cannot remember this. Is it a recent addition?
Edit Actually I must have been older than that as I was learning German at school and did not do that until Secondary School.

Maybe I'm just silly but I've always thought the Tashkent class DD that Russia ordered from the Italians was very nice looking.

EDIT: Found a better photo...course this one is when she was delivered without a main battery iirc.

For something smaller and German than Scharnhorst/Gneisenau, how about the Prinz Eugen? Lovely lines, nicely balanced profile.

Why, yes. Obviously, you disagree. *sniff*

I like ships that are low and sleek looking. It's not the size of the funnel that matters, but the sheer of the fo'c'sle. Mmmm... curvy.

You'd have to go a long way to beat the French and Italian Super Destroyers for looks. Some British and US Destroyers are ok, but these Big Girls from the Med certainly turned heads.
