You're reading "Day of Battle", right?

I'm reading "An Army at Dawn" at right now - great book!

Both are excellent! I can't wait for the final book!

Actually, I used to sail competitively 30 years ago.  It was a small 2 man sailboat.  I was the "crew".  I handled the jib and "tried" to keep the sailboat level.  We'd pull the fin out so it would go faster.  All of me from the knees up was outside the boat.  My feet were hooked under a padded chain that ran the length of the boat in the center.  The skipper handled the mainsail and rudder.  With the fin gone, a drop in wind speed usually caused me to fall overboard backward.  A strong wind gust would catapult me over the sails into the water.  That was a blast.

Man those were good times.

Sounds like you need to get back on the water again. I know that I do. I'm currently boatless (lost my boat in a fire last year, and haven't replaced it). A bad day sailing is better than a good day doing almost anything else.

Hi all,

Tropical storm Fay update........

According to the weather radar, the eye of this thing is right on top of me.

I guess that is why there is no wind or rain at the moment.

Take care Bruce!

BTW, was there strong wind and heavy rain in your area?

Leo "Apollo11"

Yes we lost power last night, for how long I do not know I was asleep

There is quite a bit of wind generated debris (torn leaves, small branches, etc) in the yard. This tells me we had a bit of wind. Again, I was asleep.

When the eye passes over, I expect more wind and rain.

It could be a while though, this thing is moving at a measely 5 mph.

As long as there is no damage or injury, that can be a very cool experience!

Windsurfing??

Windsurfing, a special surboard with a sail rig attached. My son owns one. His cousin is teaching him how to windsurf. His cousin makes a living giving windsurfing and kite surfing lessons (he's pretty darn good).

I've tried it a few times. To me it seems to incorporate more surfing than sailing , but then again , I'm not a surfer.

Yeah, but unfortunately, it's not the same on a lake in central Ohio. Nothing beats the ocean. I was on a sailboat (big one) last summer when we visited the South Outer Banks. First time in 30 years. I really do miss it. My wife and family loved it too. We decided that whenever we vacation at the coast, we'll seek out a boat to go sailing. It was only $20 per person for 1.5 hours. I got to sail her too. What a blast.

Well, off to do those chores I've been neglecting. Later all.

My swamp in the bag yard usually has 6 inches of water in it in the summer. This year it's been dry. It now has a couple of inches of water in it.

Ocean sailing is best. I haven't done any for a while. Last time I did , we were living on Guam , and that was a trip! It's a weird feeling sailing over the Marianas trench , knowing if you drop something overboard, it's a long, long way down to get it! It shouldn't make any difference, but for some reason it does. Almost as freaky as snorkeling over it.

I've been told the I might be able to rent something at the Bolling AFB marina, or perhaps the Alexandria marina. I'll let you know what the Potomac is like.

HI all - I passed the Registered Foresters Exam Yesterday.  It was tough and I can see how many recent college grads fail the first time they take it.  Having on the ground experience really helped.

When I sailed 30 years ago, it was in Chesapeake Bay east of Annapolis. Never made it as far south as the Potomic. We used to sail our little 8' long sailboats around the big freighters.
