Hi all,

OK chaps, I'd like some advice. I'm rebuilding my PC (well, pretty much building a new one apart from the HD and DVD drive...) seeing as i've had a month of not spending any cash . It needs to be fairly up to date so I won't have to buy any new bits in the near future. So far I'm thinking along the lines of the following parts plus a case, and probably Vista Premium (64 bit) :

AMD PhenomX4 9850

Gigabyte AM2 AMD 790X DDR2

MSI GeForce 8800GT

Corsair Memory TWIN2X2048

CoolerMaster 1000W REAL POWER PRO MODULAR PSU

I am more Intel Core CPU + Asus m/b + nVIDIA gfx card but your proposal is not bad at all... BTW, try making calculation with exchanging CPU for Intel Core and m/b for Asus...

Leo "Apollo11"

Do you have any particular recommendations in these areas? So far I've used several Asus boards and been very pleased with them. I've not used an INtel processor for many years now though, in fact the last Intel chip I used was way back in the days of Pentium when 133Mhz was fast

It all depends how much money you have... I suggest you get both Intel CPU and Asus m/b within your price range - post here what you can find...

BTW, new Intel "Neleham" will be released this autumn and all prices of current hardware will drop (the new CPU requires new motherboard since it has new pin layout and has new CPU socket)... this CPU is faster than current ones as much as Core was faster than Pentoim 4 (and that is MUCH)!

I always had Asus m/b and Intel CPUs with just 2 exceptions:

Intel 486 DX66
AMD 486 DX100
Intel Pentim 2
Inte Pentium 3 (several CPUs with speeds)
Intel Pentium 4 (several CPUs with speeds)
AMD X2 4400 Dual Core
Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 2.66 GHz (my current CPU for past 2 years)

IMO Quad Cores are a waste of money right now - only very few programs can use them efficiently (what programs will you run on your machine?). I'd go for a Dual Core CPU with a high clock rate.

OK then, how about this Processor/MoBo combo? I may be able to stretch to a few more £ but my budget is starting to reach it's limits.

Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16GHz

Asustek S775 Intel P35 PCI-E ATX

Does the PC have to be quiet, Dixie?

I'm with Leo regarding Intel/AMD, I prefer Intel ATM.

This CPU one would be my recommendation:

Darn... Matrix site crashed and my long typed answer dissapeared...

To cut long story short... the CPU is OK and motherboard is mainstream (Intel P35 chipset) although it additionally has WiFi- do you need that Matrin?

Matrin (VSWG) that is the very same CPU Martin (Dixie) found in his 2nd try (see above)...

The forum was down...?

As for the mainboard, Intel just released a new Chipset, 'Eaglelake'. Advantage: better slot for GPU (PCI Express 2.0), up to 16 GB RAM. Otherwise, not much new, but the boards aren't more expensive either... Two variants, P45 and the cheaper P43. If you're not going to use 2 GPUs for Crossfire, and you won't be using more than 8 GB RAM, then the P43 is OK for you. Have a look at these boards:

P43: http://www.dabs.com/ProductView.aspx?quicklinx=54HW

P45:

Yep - not only forum - whole Matrix site...

Even newer chipset and new socket for new CPU will be launched in the autumn (Intel called this new CPU "Neleham" in developement and it will be sold under name "i7" i.e. Pentium was "i5" and "Intel Core" was "i6")...

A mixed review for 'Eaglelake' here, maybe stick with P35? http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/intel-p45-chipset,1961.html#

Anyway, time to now...

Good Evening Friends.
And to Dixie, I would choose that Intel CPU over any AMD offering.
Intel is king of CPUs now and I agree with what was said about the quad cores, they are not true quads yet anyway.
2 dual cores actually.

Intel will be coming out with a true "quad" core cpu this winter, those will be the ones to get.
When they run applications that can't utuilize all 4 cores the cpu "learns" and will overclock itself using whatever core the application can utilize. Neat stuff.
For right now, go with your Intel choice, I have an E6600 which has been a workhorse.
They are really good CPUs that outperform their AMD competition rather nicely.

Quad cores are useful if you plan to use virtualization...which I would recommend. Niceguy's thought on installing Ubuntu and running WinXP in a VM is a great idea, and I can confirm from experience that Witp runs nicely in VMWare workstation.

Unless you are planning to do 3D gaming, an expensive gfx card isn't going to be that big of a need.

Morning chaps

Expensive PC parts are on order   I took the advice of the Threadsters and went with the Intel chip and a P45 board.  At least this way the possibility of using dual GPUs is there for when I get back into playing flight sims and such

You will have to have two identical ATI cards for that (but those are not expensive) - what you might need more is VERY STRONG Power Supply Unit!

I'll take your word for it.

In other news, I just had a tumour removed! Went to my doctor to have him look at a mole on my back, and he says, "That's a small benign skin tumour. Should I remove it?"

"Yes please"...

I hope that your doctor put your removed tissue for analysis - only under microscope they can for sure know if something is benign or malign...

Best wishes "T"!!!

Tithe and good morning guys.  T, Leo is right , keep an eye on things like that. And never expect medical professionals to do it for you. They just have too many patients to keep track of everyone, and you don't want to be the one who "falls through the cracks".
