All right! All right!! We can all whip ourselves. I'd really rather we just let it go, let it slide, let it be, etc, etc. We all need to keep in mind that the longer we can avoid a political subject , the sooner Robert and others may return. At least that's what I'm hopping. But then again , I'm still hoping for a pony at Christmas too!

International law states that the five countries which control Arctic coastline -- Canada, Russia, the United States, Norway and Denmark -- are allowed a 320 km (200 mile) economic zone north of their shores.

But countries have until May 2009 to submit new ownership claims over the Arctic to a United Nations commission.

Russia has claimed jurisdiction over much of the Arctic because an underwater ridge links Siberia to the seabed that runs underneath the North Pole.

Yesterday, the Russians announced a 27% increase in their defence budget for next year. It's a good thing there are sensible men in the Kremlin... No, wait... That's not right, is it?

So? There's a ridge from Greenland to the North Pole as well, so Denmark is the rightful owner of the North Pole. It's so obvious.

It will be something to watch Denmark defend it's claim against the Russian Navy. Of course the US has had it's claim tied up by the UN , so the USN is out of it. And of course, NATO has neither the jurisdiction, nor the ability.

It sounds silly, but these geological facts are immensely important for defining underwater boundaries.
