Well, heat would kill you too if it got that much hotter than our body temperatures as it gets colder. 30 below is 128 degrees different from our body temperatures.....know what happens at 228 degrees?

Yet I can survive 30 below with just some good clothing. I'd need a specially designed suit to handle 228.

Nope, we are much better suited to handle cold than heat.

The point is - it doesn't GET to be 130 deg F over body temperature outside... we are talking weather here, not volcanoes!

And even with good clothing, when the wind blows when it is that cold - forget it... only option is to stay in shelter (inside, preferably, or in a car in an emergency, although lots of folks tend to die when they get stuck in their cars during something like that...)

Question for Threadsters: what is the coldest place you've lived for 1 year or more??

My personal answer: Syracuse, NY - which i think is colder than Niagara Falls (which is N of Buffalo)... certainly gets more snow than Buffalo... worst winter i had was in Connecticut (it was normally not too bad, but that was the worst winter for the area in recorded history).

Chicago, I remember cold fronts that blew in that actually froze Lake Michigan
-60 or so wind chills as well.
In January/February you will see wind chills below zero to maybe -20-30 but every now and then look out, it literaly is painful when that wind slaps you in the face or other uncovered body parts.
I miss Chicago but not that awful winter weather.

Northern Minnesota, the place where the only thing separating you from the North Pole is a barbed wire fence.

I particularly liked what they called their weather systems in the winter ... things like the "Alberta Clipper" and the "Siberian Express."

The folks around Buffalo look forward to Lake Erie freezing in the winter - it cuts down on the "lake effect" snowstorms (wind sucks up moisture from the lakes, dumps it on the lee shore... when the lake is frozen, this is much less prone to happen).

EDIT: on one occasion in recorded history, it got cold enough that Niagara Falls actually froze!!

Ogdensburg, New York.

One time over the Christmas holidays it went from 32 DegF to -28 DegF in less than 8 hours

I will admit that, when this happened, I was living in Florida. It was Christmas 1986 I think. We were back for the holidays

When it gets that cold there is no lake effect snow, the air is so cold and dense the humidity is almost non-exsistant.
Besides mostly inidiana and Michigan get the brunt of the lake effect snow.

oh, i dunno - Syracuse gets something like 190" of snow on average each year, and upper NY (around Waterville, close to where Bruce was raised) gets far more than that.

EDIT: These are mostly lake-effect snowstorms.

yes, but I was meaning only when the temps dip below zero and the north winds howl. Southern Indiana because of the Lake won't see those cold temps and get lake-effect snow as your friends in Syracuse experience.
It can be below zero in Chicago and South bend and other areas of Indiana will be plenty warmer because of lake temperature and see snow.
Very strange.

Upstate NY (Syracuse - Watertown) gets the worst of both worlds - it is cold, but the lake doesn't freeze (unlike Erie, it is too deep): so, it gets really cold and you get lots of snow... USUALLY not at the same time...

Northern Minnesota, though, is the coldest place on the Threadsters list so far (i think).

Question for Threadsters: what is the coldest place you've lived for 1 year or more??

Rochester, Minnesota, for 4.5 years, with 5 winters. Christmas Day of 2000, the morning temperature was actually 25 degrees F below zero. No wind, so it didn't feel nearly as cold as some milder, but windier days. The coldest wind chill I remember was -79 degrees F.

Can't remember exactly the size of the Pizza, but they had a gigantic pizza for family gatherings.
