I had to take the daughter unit to the orthodontist today and afterward went for a look round a mall and there was a model shop! I nearly bought the BoB memorial Airfix kit to introduce the boy to the dlights of it.

Of course, said Spanish Heinkels also took part in Battle of Britain the movie.

I wonder if that's what I saw, it was the year before the film was released.

I remember my early close encounters of the Testor's kind. I had a little room with no windows in it in the basement (suitable place for somebody like me, eh?) in which to build my plastic models. Not only was the glue sniff strange, but the spray paint was kind of ... brain cell destroying, too.

Who knows? Maybe without all the mental damage I could have grown up to - dare I say it? - conquer the world...

Hi all,

I still remember how my father bought the 1:72 Nieport 17c more than 30 years ago... I must have been around 6 or 7... he made it and I watched... after that we made them together and then I made them myself...

I still have around 50 diorama models (aircraft in 1:72 and 1:48, ships in 1:400 and tanks in 1:35)... and the Nieport 17c is there as well...

Why work that hard. With those extra brain cells you can develop the technology for first contact then sell us out to our alien overlords.

Looked like it... BTW, magnificent bit of fly-boy cockiness there; "Du Doch Nicht", in this context, roughly translates as "even though you're behind me and can read this, you won't shoot me down".

Never much good with WWI planes, me... I can just about identify a Fokker Dr.I and an SE5 when I see them, but that's it.

In other news, here's the current standings in the Pregnant Females In My Department Since I Started Working At The Hospital League:

Doctors: 3
Nurses: 4
Secretaries: 2

Amazing I have time to get any actual work done...

I understood the German and was imagining that the plane was an albatross but realized that I could be wrong. Before I wrote a short story around the saying I thought I should try and identify the aircraft. (now to think of the pilots name and the story will begin to flesh out)

From what i just searched, it was Udet.

EDIT: This "Du Doch Nicht" reminds me of the "Blue Max" novel, in which a German pilot paints some nasty words in English on his wing... the first plane he encounters has its two man crew so startled/amused that he manages to capture it and force it to land it his base (iirc).

flyable replica. the camel, tri wing and fokker are all flyable replica's even though i can't tell you the last time someone actualy took one of them up. so many planes to fly and maintane and not enought time to do it. they have 4 full time mechanics on staff.

D'oh, I just came up with the name Otto Glatz and was putting together a story, I guess that particular planes story is already owned

The story went I was thinking of went along the lines of pilots in training. Each night at the bar each pilot would brag about his simulated kills, yet each time one implicated young Glatz as his victim Glatz would reply "Du doch Nicht". Finally training end and each pilot is sent to the front. On Glat's first mission his flight is pulled into a giant melee with many planes on each side. As he tries to keep in formation with his leader Glatz is seperated and soon in trouble with a SPAD on his tail. He begins to freeze uncertain as to what action he should take and then thinks "Du doch Nicht" and without thinking, and a lot of luck, maneuvers again and again to safety.

Arriving back at the aerodrome Glatz is welcomed by the grounds crew. They are put off as the young pilot continues to repeat the phrase to himself over and over again as they help him from the cockpit. The story is spread and the next morning Otto goes out to his plane only to find the phrase painted onto the tail.

The German tri-wing is the Fokker DR I. Everyone knows it because Richthofen flew it. Just like everyone knows the Sopwith Camel because Snoopy flew it.

I actually suspect most of you would recognize a Nieuport if you saw it too. That upper-wing mounted Lewis is pretty tell-tale.
