In addition to the original ones, I have copy and pasted several 'new' quotations into the Maxims.txt file with the quotations you see in the load screen and I'm interested in further ones.. If anyone has some more exceptional period quotations from the ACW , i wanna hear of it

I've added f.e.:

quote:

Governor, if I had foreseen the use those people designed to make of their victory, there would have been no surrender at Appomattox Courthouse; no sir, not by me. Had I foreseen these results of subjugation, I would have preferred to die at Appomattox with my brave men, my sword in this right hand. - General Robert E. Lee to Governor Stockdale of Texas*

quote:

I hate newspapermen. They come into camp and pick up their camp rumors and print them as facts. I regard them as spies, which, in truth, they are. If I killed them all there would be news from Hell before breakfast. – Gen. William T. Sherman*

quote:

“Captain, my religious belief teaches me to feel as safe in battle as in bed. God has fixed the time for my death. I do not concern myself about that, but to be always ready, no matter when it may overtake me. That is the way all men should live, and then all would be equally brave” - General Thomas Stonewall Jackson*

quote:

“I think I understand what military fame is; to be killed on the field of battle and have your name misspelled in the newspapers.” – Gen. William T. Sherman*

quote:

With all my devotion to the Union, and the feeling of loyalty and duty of an American citizen, I have not been able to make up my mind to raise my hand against my relatives, my children, my home. – R. E. Lee, 1861*

quote:

Still a Union that can only be maintained by swords and bayonets, and in which strife and civil war are to take the place of brotherly love and kindness, has no charm for me. – Col. Robert E. Lee (letter to his son, 1/23/1861)*

quote:

"They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance" - Union General John Sedgwick just moments before being shot dead by a confederate sniper at Spotsylvania*

quote:

"The time for compromise has now passed, and the South is determined to maintain her position, and make all who oppose her smell Southern powder and feel Southern steel" - Jefferson Davis in his inaugural speech on February 16, 1861*

quote:

"You are green, it is true; but they are green also. You are all green alike." - Abraham Lincoln gave this description of the Union Army to its commander, Irvin McDowell, while urging McDowell to attack the Confederates shortly before First Manassas*
