Warspite1

There are a few in the naval dept.

The heavy cruiser Shropshire is shown as an Australian ship - but was only transferred to the RAN in 1942 due to the loss of HMAS Canberra.

HMNZS Achilles and Leander are shown as a New Zealand ships but the New Zealand navy did not exist in its own right until 1941. Prior to this, they were part of the New Zealand squadron of the Royal Navy. HMS Neptune was to have been transferred too but losses in the Med meant she could not be sent to New Zealand as planned. However she had aboard 150 New Zealanders when she was sunk in December 1941 - all of whom lost their lives.

HMNZS Gambia also started life as an RN ship and was transferred to the Kiwi`s early in her career. It too is shown as a Kiwi ship.

I have not checked for others - but these are the obvious ones.

All of which leads me to another question. Which was the only ship of the British Pacific Fleet to have been in the war from day one?

Q.1 The only Merlin I know of is the Magician/Wizard from King Arthur

For Q5, didn't the CSS Hunley (Confederate States of America) have a version of the "schnorkel"?

Status: offline 		The Germans stole their schnorkel design from the Dutch. But that might have been from one of the companies the Germans themselves helped set up to circumvent the Versailles restrictions on them having subs, I forget on the schnorkel. But a Finnish firm set up like that did the basic design for the VIIC type U-Boat.

I remember something about a very big french submarine, named the Surcouf (name of a french corsair or naval commander from the beginning of the 19th century who did some feats in India region I think).  According to wikipedia 4218 tons, huge for a sub at this time.

Thats why I was not sure if it was the French (Surcouf) or the Japanese (I-400). But plumped for the Japanese sub - which luckily was right.

Ahh...the Surcouf. It bring's back fond memories of a naval campaign I was in where I had the submarine at my disposal. Going around shelling the enemy with the 2 8 inch guns on board. How cool is that - okay, also pretty stupid, but what can I say.

I think it is believed that she was rammed by an allied merchantment somewhere in the Caribbean.
