I nearly always buy another brigade artillery for my units containing this attribute, as I dont see the great use of it. But maybe I am missing something. Does the "25% of damage that unit inflicts is made with the range profile of a 6pdr gun" mean that 1 out of 4 attacks the unit makes, uses the 6pdr gun profile? Or is it calculated in another way?

From what I seem to experience it is .75xnormal weapon+.25x6pdr gun.
One main advantage to this is if fired upon from a distance, as alot of the guns have 25 gun rating at ranges of 3 and more, the 6pdr has a higher gun rating at a distance, thus improving your ranged damage.

I never use it however, find it to be a waste of options, I prefer going for one or two of these instead medic/smokelesspowder/sharpshooter.

Hmmm

first inf target I take out is one with Attached Arty, it is the most dangerous unit to let close with your units

my shock troops all have attached Arty with them

it may give you a little bonus at longer ranges, but it is murder pointblank

Thanks for the answers. I can see they might be very useful when getting really close. So maybe I will reconsider my usual strategy.

add one or two of them and see how they do in battle

remember, with my style of play, I like them, but depending on how you play, they may not be worth it

You can always play a bit with the "Attack Report" toggled on, and then you'll see what BArt does.

They are really good if you have early war weapons, but once you get better weapons, the bang for the buck decreases.

I agree with Romeo, brigade artillery is best in the early days.
When you start getting Spencers and the like, you're better off equipping your close combat units with these and use the brigade artillery slot for an extra medic or something. This will also give you back some movement points which are important for shock units that need to penetrate deep into enemy lines or for daring flanking manouvres, to hit where it hurts the most.

One thing I never really got to work, though, was horse artillery.
The movement penalty really hurts the cavalry, I think, and I've never really seen that impressive results in fire combat.
Even a 'double' horse artillery performs pretty mediocre, is my experience.
Much, much better here, to give your cavalry a hard hitting carbine and leave them their full mobility.

Doubling up and creating artillery units probably remains its main advantage although its a useful addition singly and they are handy for soaking up surplus northern iron. Medical units are especially valuable because of their dual role; often essential for divisions that are spending lengthy periods in enemy/barren territory - provided you can afford them.

Horse artillery is best used in combination with quick horses although you then lose out on the full movement gain. If your main use for cavalry is scouting, longer range and if possible a decent weapon (that you can afford/supply) is the best combination.
