I have noticed that ranges on my scenarios and indeed many ( if not all ) of the battles I set up are either set automatically to some fixed minimum or are set to some low random value. This forces me to reset all of the response ranges for my units and formations. Is this a problem for anyone else? Or am I missing something? I have had my butt unnecessarily kicked by some of my pals ( pals!?) due to a failure on my part to look at all ranges. Wasupwid dat? ------------------ "Mediocrity carries its own price." I too am intrigued as to how the initial ranges are set. I've had the same thing happen to me in PBEM games when I overlooked the 'range setting' portion of my first turn. Another problem is that a unit will return fire when it is fired at, regardless of where you have set its Op Fire (OF) Range, this action will reset the maximum Op Fire Range to whatever the range is to the target currently being fired at. You almost have to re-check your OF Range after every turn. Yet another problem is that I often want to set different ranges for different tyopes of vehicles/guns within a unit. For example I often set infantry OF very low for ambush purposes, but set half track OF at the max so they will shoot at airplanes. At least in PBEM games you usually have a turn or two to check this stuff before the action becomes intense. Now that we can micromanage our OF in Solitaire and Campaign games its not as important if the game designer set up some goofy OF ranges initially.

Troops that get shot at tend to shoot back :-) can be tough being in charge :-) Seriously, it would be nice to have total extreme control over the opfire of every unit so it only fired in the exact situation you wanted...but how much control is too much control? Some argued the OpFire confirn gives you too much control...We give you choices, but there are trade-offs between realism and gamesmanship that get bent back and forth. Add teh limitations of being stuck with basic design limits and we have pushed the limits as far as we can go. People want to micromanage details to various degrees. Between opfire confirm and resetting ranges, you have the basics you need to control your forces more than any battlefield commander could. It could be improved, of course, but that would be a different game engine... [This message has been edited by Paul Vebber (edited October 03, 2000).]

Sorry...I didn't realize I was asking for extreme control. I just wanted to know how I could get to adjust troop ranges without spending hours doing so. ------------------ "Mediocrity carries its own price." It is my pleasure to communicate with you. Greg - "Hammerhead"
