That's OK IKE. I will have 3 more carriers, and at least another F4U group on one of them. I see you are not too anxious to try and catch the small convoys going to and from Irau now

PM falls!!!!!  I would like to say it was a grand operation worthy of the fine traditions of the US navy, but that would be a stretch. A small TF, landing a small detachment, an Aus ENG unit, and found the base abandoned! Not sure what IKE is up to, but I am sure it will be someting interesting!

You lost an AP to mine at PM.

Every fighter in the Solomons on Escort and a Betty group fly into a 250 plane CAP unescorted.

Stupid s h i t.

I will gladly trade one AP for PM any day of the year!  Not sure what to say about target selection and such... (see my recent thread about the KB). Once I get the airstrip operational there things will sure get interesting!

Naw, Bush is out of office now!!!!

Nice strike by IKE. It's the price I pay to get PM up and running quickly, although I had higher hopes for my fighters, and I did not see the KB coming. He may get one more good shot before I have nearly 200 fighters there and can start a good air war to drain his strength.

The Empire may strike back my friend, but you ain't my father!!!!

Ike has been flying either sweeps or CAP over PM. He has lost about 60 fighters to my 20 over the last couple turns.

today is a great day in the struggle against Japan. B-17's and B-24's became operational at our new level 5 airbase at PM. Smaller B-25's and B-26's have been active Against IKE's Mid-range bases. He has also apparently given up on his Sweeps and attacks on PM by air.

He appears to be happy staying behind his bases, and ready to use the KB in longer range strikes against my coming landings.

quick update as a smeak away from painting the kitchen!   Units of teh 6th Aus division landed and captured G-G. Again, Ike pulled out the garrison. Our carriers are taking a tour of the Soloman sea, trying to see if IKE will bring out his fleet. one CS was sunk in port at Shortland. Assorted airbese strikes have cost IKE around 30 Bettys in the first half of April. Not sure exactly when IKE plans to contest a landing, but I am glad he waited until Pearl released a few more heavy units!

Disaster for the allies.... in spite of setting not to react, and orders to follow a surface TF, my casrriers charged 6 hexes of course towards Shortland. My planes attacked a small TF. sinking one AO and 3 DD's. Several waves of unescorted SBD's were slaughtered, even though my CAP was at 60%. IKE's carriers were apparently under huge levels of land based cap. HIs stikes badly damaged 4 of my carriers. IKE's losses were around 180 Vals and Kates. In the same turn, my land based p-38's at Gili Gili elected to help fly CAP on my CV's instead of the convoy in port, and IKE's Bettys pounded that pretty good as well.

I salute IKE on his plan, and do not intend to take anything away from his skill by saying that there is nothing worse than spending months on a game, and have a computer "decision" such as this happen. I intend to keep fighting on, but the odds are now very much in IKE's favor.

one note.... we made it to 4-28-43 with Pearl only sending one BB into the game for the allies....

I intend to keep fighting on.

I have noticed when Ike plays very late he is about to spring a trap. I should have gone to bed 2 hours earlier. I made a command mistake late at night and lost 2 carriers.. and IKe had something happen to a surface TF and it got slammed by me. The TF did not perform as he expected(moved into LBA range).

I expected his carriers to be lurking, and had sighted them for 3 previous turns lurking between Rabaul and the islands. If my carriers had not charged off without orders, things probably would have been fine, as his bombers would have been at long range, and the Kates would not have been loaded with torps. Oh well, still 8 months to go.

With IKE's vacation, I have not been doing much with this ARR. I am sorry.

Ike strategy contines to confuse me. Only a moderate force was stationed at Lugna. After landing the 2nd Marine Div to the east, the base was taken at the end of May. IKE still has a nearly 2000 point advantage, but i am closing this at the rate of about 20 points per day. Sooner or later he has to commit his fleet, but my land based air cover is coming into effective range of more and more of his bases. Soon Hellcats and Thunderbolts will start arriving.

Overall Pearl has been very slow to release ships. I common theme when I play IKE. I made it until April 43 until the 2nd BB was sent, which up until now has limited my ability to launch large invasions, as my CA's simply cannot stand up to his heavy units, and the AI "bug" for the lack of a better term that charged my CV's off to get hammered has cut my carrier air power in half. Still, the advance continues!

Lunga can´t be held. If you put 20,000 Japanese there 20,000 are going to be lost, if put 40,000 there, 40,000 will be lost and so on.

I think it is better to save these Divisions and look for possible openings and counter attack.

staging a counter attack is going to start getting very hard. A few more weeks and my p-47's arrive, and every base from Rabaul to Shortland will be unsafe for your naval units to base from.

patterns my _____. 3 groups of p-38's decided to stay home instead of flying 50% escorts. Ike has build many small airfields around the map, and resumed his night bombing of may bases. on the plus side, he is loosing about 2-5 Bettys/Nells a day in good weather, and thus each week his overall strength is less.

the slow allied push forward continues. Sooner or later IKE's main fleet will have to come out, although being down 4 carriers will limit me a great deal it does.

sweet revenge! 6-22-43. this time the AI bites IKE. He tried another of his 10-hex carrier battles, and wave after wave of his planes flew unescorted into my fighters. 150+ planes lost. No hits or even attempted hits on my ships. This does make up for him knocking out my 4 carriers a bit. IKE still has his carriers, but planes for them is rapidly becomming a problem.

IKE tries again.....

I figure a large level of CAP is covering hi carriers from hisland bases, as my planes will not fly, but over 120 mre Vls and Kates lost for onl minor damange to the Lexington.

IKE tries again.....

Less than 100 carrier based corsairs have virtually destroyed the entire Japanese carrier air wings and entire land based bomber wings. Over 1,000 aircraft were shot down in 4 days for 1 torpedo hit.

Use the no corsairs on carriers rule. Definately a game breaker play balance problem with them on carriers.

yes, the dreaded F4U's. Or late war allied fighters in general. The main slaughter has been from my 5 land based groups flying cover. The last stages of the game are going to be centered on our surface strength I think, and given the low number of BB's Pearl has sent, even with 4 carriers going home for repairs, it will be interesting to see what IKE can do. The plan had been to fly my land bombers from both ends of the map to hit his land bases to hurt his Bettys, and then park my carriers under land based F4U cover and let IKEs airforce fly against it. Even though all of IKE's carriers are intact, he should be so short of planes, that they will pose mch less of a threat now. ( no charge for the free intel IKE).

the corsair is simply stuppid overpowerd. i remember one of my games, in which 16 corsairs shot down 75 japanese fighters.

thats one of the reasons, why i went over to WITP. because game engine weakneses of UV will not be patched away.

The great thing about WITP is the editor. If one thinks something is too strong or too weak, just change it. UV editor is very limited.

I would personaly like to see in UV the Wilcat brought up a little in air to air combat. Hellcat brought down just slightly, Corsair brought down quite a lot, Tony brought up slightly.

Yes, but good luck getting Matrix to admit it. I am sure in the research they did, they simply looked at kill ratios. In a recent game, p-47's form Buna cleared the skys of rabaul that had good pilots. At the time I had them outnumbered, but that and quality do not seem to matter much. Yes, Wildcats and p-40's need raised, late war fighters need lowered.

Having personally flown the F4U, I can personally attest to its air-to-air capability.  Landed like a brick,  but great in the air,  so much power in that 2,000 hp engine & great manouverability/roll as well for such a large heavy aircraft.
For what it's worth,  the F4U had the best kill ratio in air-to-air combat of all the Allied types in the Pacific, something like 15-1 (Hellcats only managed 10.5-1) although it was used less than both the Wildcat and the Hellcat.  Most F4U losses were due to AA flak, or else landing accidents (which both exceeded air-to-air losses by a large margin)  not other planes.
Wildcat was and still is a great plane but was used poorly against Zero's, which I think is reflected correclty in this game.  During 1942 & first half of 1943 the pilots were still trying conventional turning dog-fighting tactics against Zero's, and usually coming out second best.  Joe Foss's cactus airforce seems to be just about the only exception to this rule, in his memoirs he states that whilst at Henderson he & his fellows, fed up with being danced rings around by the more manouevable Zero's in a low-speed turning dogfight,  threw away the official rule-book and training manual and started making up new & different tactics - the biggest difference was instigating combat at a much higher altitude and using height to more of an advantage.  He also states this golden rule about battling a Zero : 'Never fight a Zero one-to-one,  if you do so you are outnumbered'.
When the Hellcat's started appearing in June/July '43 the tactics changed, and the 'Thatch weave' & using pairs of Hellcat's to take on a single Zero was officially incorporated into the training manual.  Interesting, Thatch developed good tactics for taking on Zero's fairly early in the war but they were never officially incorporated into the UN training manual until mid-'43 & then only with the new crop of Hellcat pilots

I think in UV the kill ratio for the F4U is greater than 15-1.

Wiki

quote:

The U.S. Navy counted an 11:1 kill ratio with the F4U Corsair.

From February 1943 onward, the F4U operated from Guadalcanal and ultimately other bases in the Solomon Islands. A dozen USMC F4U-1s of VMF-124, commanded by Major William E. Gise, arrived at Henderson Field (code name "Cactus") on 12 February. The first recorded combat engagement was on February 14, 1943, when Corsairs of VMF-124 under Major Gise assisted P-40s and P-38s in escorting a formation of B-24 Liberators on a raid against a Japanese aerodrome at Kahili. Japanese fighters contested the raid and the Americans got the worst of it, with four P-38s, two P-40s, two Corsairs and two Liberators lost. No more than four Japanese Zeros were destroyed. A Corsair was responsible for one of the kills, although this was due to a midair collision.

Although the Corsair's combat debut was not impressive, the Marines quickly learned how to make better use of the aircraft and started demonstrating its superiority over Japanese fighters.

In UV these Corsairs would have shredded all the Japanese planes. Experience needs to be more of a factor in Air Combat.

Agree!

And bring some types at all or don´t even list them in the inventory / replacement pool at all. Ki-84, Ki-44 for example.

quick update. Tulagi captured by 25th infantry div.  Long range bombers from PM and Irau are scoring nearly a dozen assorted hits per turn on IKE's ships trying to run supplies to his bases.

As for the F4u. Yes, great aircraft, I think the best all around fighter of WWII. However, against good pilots, and outnumbered 3-1+, there is no way it would have racked up the kill ratios it does in this game. F4U, P-47, and F6f are over-rated. hopefully the talk of another patch is more than just talk, and they will add the editor to this game.

It´s interesting in WITP, the UV scenario there has quite a different forces than the same UV scenario although both clame to be historic.

edit-¨claim¨

That´s really bad spelling!!
