Sorry if this was answered in air thread, but I didn't found it.
Is it now possible to produce old aircraf types when new type become available? e.g. if I
want to produce Nells instead of Betty's...

That is a very good question. I find myself wanting to continue the use of Ki-30s and Ki-32s over having to use those pathetic Ki-51s. While none of the IJA dive bombers are particularly great the older ones have a much more usefull range and can be effective if used in China. As it stands now, you can't produce the ones I'd like to use and are forced to either swap them to Ki-51s (to keep any DBs for the army) or Ki-48s.

In Witp you are not in charge of production (what to build), only how many. I really hope this changes in AE, either the computer is in charge or the player, not both. It's bad design to have the computer over write player changes to production, not to mention it ruins your game when your aircraft production resets to zero when the computer changes aircraft types again!

You can produce any type aircraft you want. If you want Nells, build Nells. Just a matter of assigning the factory to build it.

If you don't want the factories to auto upgrade, just make sure you have "Expand facilities at start" turned off. Also turn off "auto upgrade" and "auto replacement" if you want to control where production units go.

Nothing sucks worse than to have a fighter unit at a forward base suddenly upgrade to a new type on the eve of battle.

So your saying this has been fixed in AE, because the above doesn't work in WITP!!

No it doesn't!!!!

Thats the effect of Auto Upgrade on and has nothing to do with factories.

I've played CHS for the last two years as Japan with (Expand off, Auto Upgrade off, no replacements).

Factories that Build Nells will still change to Bettys, If I change a Betty Factory back to Nells the computer will change it back to build Bettys. This is same as standard WITP.

All of these options do not effect factories and have nothing to do with CHS.

Auto Upgrade - effects air groups not factories!!

Expand On/Off - effects bases(ports/airfields/forts) not factories!

No Replacements - effects air groups not factories!

Upgrading air units in AE can only be done at size 7+ airfields (as it stands now, subject to change).

Edit: I havent played around with the Jap side yet. Still tracking allied bugs

I am also wondering about this, because Zuikaku, pad, and Shark are correct: A factory will automatically upgrade itself to a newer type when that newer type comes into production. An A6M3a factory, for example, will upgrade to A6M5, like it or not.

It's not a great big huge deal, but there are a few older types that there might be a reason to continue to produce. The older IJA DB's have bigger payload, and all around look better than Sonia; the A6M3a has more range than M5, so is a better escort for the Betty if you want to strike more than 5 hexes out. I can't think of any other older types you would want to produce; the Betty is a better plane than the Nell, not sure why one would want to continue Nell production.

I my experience nells are better in delivering torpedoes than bettys. same squads same pilots better results with nells I don´t know why is that but I agree with zuikaku, want to keep my nell production.
