A little further south of the above shot I came to the realization that even if I took the next 10 turns or so to encircle and destroy a small line of Soviet troops he will just replace them with more.

I believe I destroyed 14 Soviet units in turn 20: all infantry types. Here's the Axis losses so far:

Nothing changed at Odessa ( again ) and I'm beginning to think it's not going to for a long long time. I need more arty or some tanks or a nuclear bomb or something. Those guys deserve metals for holding out in the face of repeated attacks for weeks now. I've tried using all the combat support ( aircraft ) that's available and all the railroad arty and both together at the same time and nothing is budging those guys. There's only three Soviet arty pieces there and they must be some big guns or something like that. I hate to attack at "ignore losses" settings because of the much much higher losses but I may have to to get some progress out of my guys. I've seen units evaporate when on "limit losses" settings so I've been attacking at "minimum losses" settings. Maybe that's the problemo.

Anyway, I've put together a loss history of the HRS squads and I thought you might find it mildly interesting:

So um.......I'm minding my own business when all of a sudden one of my MP units near Kiev goes into reorg during the last combat round of turn 20. I open the moves from Curt and loe and behold I find ALL my MP units are in reorg, even those near Leningrad and those in the Ukraine.

So, all you scenario designers out there.....maybe you should break your formations down into bite-sized chunks so that 40+ units don't go into reorg when only one of them does.

From the manual

"Formation quality is the average of the formation's proficiency and average assigned unit quality. Formation quality is reduced if many units are divided. The formation passes the quality check if this value is greater than a random number from 1 to 100, or if the number of units that experienced severe combat results in the previous turn is smaller than a random number from 1 to the number of units in the formation. This means that formations are subject to reorganization on turns following heavy combat."

and

"Unit Quality = (2*proficiency+readiness)/3.

This is a weighted average of a unit's proficiency and readiness, expressed as a percentage. Regardless of actual proficiency and readiness, quality can be no lower than 10% and no higher than 100%. This is the chance that the unit will pass a quality check. Quality checks are made at numerous points in the game to determine things like the unit's ability to sustain an attack or hold ground in the face of a strong enemy attack
."

I'm seeing a lot of orange readiness status in that screenshot.

So if there are 20 units in a formation, and one unit experiences severe combat results, there is a 95% chance that the formation will be subject to reorganization. And if 10 units experience severe combat results, there is a 50% chance of reorganization.

No wonder I can't win in Vegas.
