if I canīt interrupt the Allied training runs or make them at least more costly then we will run into serious problem in four months. As this would mean we would face hundreds of top notch Allied fighter pilots that fly top notch Allied fighters. We are barely holding our own against mediocre Allied pilots in Allied fighters at the moment with elite pilots in our crappy fighters. And even if the Tony will hopefully be an improvement, it will be far from equal to Allied fighters. Not good, not good... at the moment I donīt know what to do against those training runs. And in the long run I canīt interdict them anyway as the Allied will get dozens of bases they can fly training runs to... as soon as I run out of skilled pilots, those training runs wonīt be necessary anyway as I will then field 30 exp pilots in obsolete aircraft against 50 exp pilots in excellent aircraft... but Iīm not telling veteran Japanese players anything new...

letīs hope for the Shinden...

The PGs achieve one hit and two near misses... the sub isnīt on fire so I guess the hit was just FOW or it was a very bad die roll that did nearly no damage...

not much more than training raids this turn. No clue why Miller trains up his 4Es, they are deadly enough anyway. But thatīs fine with me, the only thing that worries me is when I see fighters doing training runs...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 05/12/43

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 80,114

Japanese Ships
SS I-177

Allied Ships
AK William P. McArthur, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
AK William M. Stewart
MSW Finch

Allied ground losses:
35 casualties reported

West of the Fidjis, a medium sized AK is hit by a torp, but not in sinking condition it seems. Some troops aboard though. The single MSW wasnīt enough to prevent our sub from achieving a hit, not even with the excellent Allied ASW...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 80,114

Japanese Ships
SS I-177, hits 5

Allied Ships
SC SC-738
SC SC-708
SC SC-707
SC SC-705
SC SC-704
SC SC-636

but just a moment later, an ASW TF attacks, damaging our sub and bringing it in a bad state. Chance to survive is good but floatation is at 45 after four near misses and a hit... only damaging a medium sized AK to have a sub being more or less heavily damaged isnīt worth it. Not even sinking the AK would be worth it. If the sub survives (itīs nevertheless quite a distance to the next major port) it will be out of action for at least three months with the sys damage received and the long way to Japan...

we spot a (probable) supply convoy that reached Efate (staging base of the enemy fighters doing training runs to Luganville) and out of 100 IJN long range bombers Iīve moved to Lunga, only 18 launch. Efate is 12 hexes so no Zeros on escort. Was quite a gamble as Miller could have thought of putting his fighters on Cap as long as the TF is around. Will stand down the bombers next turn as he probably will then put up Cap. A Dinah III has been flying recon over Efate for weeks and will do so tomorrow, then we will see if thereīs Cap or not...

once again the damned "follow unit" order isnīt working. Have set my Army in Manchuko to cross the Russian border, the lead unit stopped moving today and has reset itself to defend. Oh those bugs...

Hi

What are your plans regarding Russia? What are main objectives and probable axis of attack? Are Russian troops still situated around Vladivostok or they retreated North towards Siberia?

And yes .. more pics please

main objective? Knocking them out!

Seriously, Iīm pretty sure that Russia will collapse in a couple of months if Miller hasnīt suddenly become an expert in WITP ground warfare. Iīve got 18.000 assault points (guess there are "only" 16.500 in Manchuko though as a couple of divs in Northern Japan are also counted for the Manchuko garrison) and one of my most important weapons will once again be the Japanese wonder weapon - my tank units...

the tanks will advance into the North to Blitzkrieg there, backed up by several divisions. First target will be the area around Borzya. My main advance will happen in the South on Vladivostok and Ughlahamensk with dozens of divisions. Of course I will also take Okha (400 oil and 600 resources) and the far Eastern island base Petropavlask.

The Russian are static until they are activated so they are still where they always were. As soon as I have activated them, my troops wonīt move further inland and I will give Miller two weeks time to redeploy his troops. My airforce will stay active in that time though.

More pics... well, thereīs nothing happening... itīs just boring so the attack on Russia will bring at least some action...

Well, i'm asking you about Russia because of this:

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=1733319&mpage=2&key=

Jumper AAR , allied player retreated with complete Red Army towards Irkutsk and that was kind of game over for Siberian campaign.

I don't know is Miller skillfull enough to do it same way but nevertheless you must use your tanks to split Red Army forces into 2 or maybe 3 parts and mop them afterwards

Since he has two weeks to move his troops unopposed Miller should be able to avoid getting encircled around Vladivostok.

I wonder if he will move in hordes of 4e bombers to do some strategic bombing while he still has excellent airfields near Japan.

well, if he wants to do that, thatīs perfectly fine for me. And I wouldnīt call it a good idea for the Allied anyway. Losing all of Russia and sitting at Irkutsk, is that a good strategy? I would just place 5000 av there and would have knocked out the Russian forever... Retreating everything to Iskutsk without a fight is not really what I would call skillful...

I wonder if he will move in hordes of 4e bombers to do some strategic bombing while he still has excellent airfields near Japan.

that could be an option for him for a couple of days perhaps but he would lose ALL of his 4Es that he moved in. Iīve moved hundreds of medium bombers to Manchuko and they should be able to take care of the enemy airfields. Like Iīve done in the past in this campaign (and like Iīm trying to do in all of my PBEMs) Iīm really focussing my assets in one place to knock out the enemy as fast as possible and this usually works quite fast. Japan has no chance if it has to fight the Allied simualtenously on the whole map, but if focussing on one area it usually can overwhelm the Allied. This has worked in the SRA, it has worked in the Pacific, it has then worked in India, it worked in China, then it has worked in Northern Australia (which was totally an all out operation) and I guess it will also work in Russia. And thatīs exactly why it is so important for the Allied to keep up the pressure everywhere, just right from the beginning on IMO.

I estimate the total number of 4Es on the map around 350-400. This includes some 100 British Liberators that have "limited" range compared to the US versions. I have dispersed my AA units in Japan where I want them to have so if he really attacks important targets then a lot of his bombers will be damaged and then destroyed on the ground. And if he damages some of my industry then I still expect to get more from the Russians than I will lose in Japan from a limited, not ongoing Allied bomber offensive.

Moving 4Es to Russia isnīt really an option IMO, it would hurt him just too much to lose 200-300 of them when he gets "only" 70-90 a month in total (while 30 are British). And you should not forget that the Russian are not swimming in air support, in fact aviation support troops are limited, at least that is my experience from playing the Allied.

The only question will be if the Russian fighter squadrons will be able to defend their airfields. If not, then I can knock out every airfield with medium bomber strikes of 300-400 bombers a day. Even if I donīt have 4Es available, 400 Helen at normal range can do quite some damage, even if going in at 16.000ft to avoid total slaughter by flak. IMO, the Russian fighter force will be one of the most important things. Iīm sure that we have an edge in experience (probably 20 points on average, with the enemy being at 60 and us being at 80) but like Iīve mentioned earlier, the enemy fighters are more than competitive. The only disadvantage they have (for point defense) is the fact that their armament totally sucks. Gun values of 4 or 5 arenīt impressing at all and they will surely have problems taking down my fighters and bombers if they get the chance to do so. For the offense, there are some bomber squadrons around, but their range is also limited, the fighter range even more so. The IL-2s are also totally useless for example, could only be used for short range attacks...

I first wanted to wait for the Tony to be employed in huge numbers to make sure we wreck havoc on the Russian fighter force but have decided that this will be too far in the future (Tony still being at 9/43 with 517 R&D at the moment). If the Tojos take too many casualties, then I will have to move in 200 Zeros to back them up.

With the defeat of the RN and USN near Darwin Iīm not afraid of a big Allied counteroffensive somewhere in the Pacific, so I surely have the time I need in Russia. As soon as I have knocked out their airforce, I could move out hundreds of aircraft again anyway. For the moment, I guess 250 Betties/Nells can keep the Pacific safe with 300 Zeros as escorts. Not to forget that I have KB upgraded and ready to go, so what else than a very limited attack (for example against Canton Island) can he do? IMO nothing, an attack against Baker for example would look like a suicide attempt.

Considering the fact that it is mid May 1943 already, weīre in an excellent strategic situation...

in the afternoon we attack a TF of a dozen ships near Nanomea atoll and are engaged by three dozen Corsairs and another dozen Warhawks. After being bounced for a very short time we also got the bounce and I guess this is was enabled us to achieve quite a nice result against the Corsairs. In the end we killed more enemy fighters A2A than we lost and it was no problem to get our bombers through. Hit rate wasnīt that great, guess we have to lucky if one of the AKs will sink. Baker didnīt launch a strike, otherwise it could have been worse for the Allied. This strike came from Apamama atoll...

after being engaged by the ASW TF, I-23 kills one of the PGs... probably an ASW TF... there are two more TFs being spotted in the hex, it looks like they are going to one of the dot bases between Efate and New Caledonia, which will probably mean that Miller plans to expand one or more of the dot bases to fly training runs to Luganville. Bad news indeed, this will mean he will be able to have 600+ aircraft a day flying training runs to Luganville...

one of the reasons for my attack on Russia, the oil field of Ohka Sakalin. 400 oil means this site could feed 2400 of my heavy industry which would roughly be 1/6 of my total HI. With the increasing pressure on the SRA in 6 months or so, this could be a REAL important place to have...

Here we go! The airwar over Russia has begun. We launch a huge strike, coming in combined from two of my major airbases in the region. I hoped to see both bases launch as we need a big number of escorts. One base alone could not have provided the escorts we wanted to have in this initial strike. In the beginning I was shocked as during the bounce the enemy Lagg-3 took down 7 of the Tojos for no loss. Thank god thereīs not the total radar coverage like over Western Allied bases and the bounce ended sooner than later, enabling our escorts to really take a toll on the enemy fighters on Cap. What really was amazing was the fact that the enemy was quite low on morale because after two dozen figthers were shot down by our escorts, most of the enemy fighters turned back. Then the bombers smashed the airfield... I consider the Migg, the Yak-1 and the Lagg-3 as the main threat for our airforce and therefore Iīm happy to see nearly 90 of those first line fighters being destroyed today. As we have spotted a lot of obsolete I-16 and I-24 also, this means the Russian are still low on Miggs, Yaks and Laggs and as soon as we have destroyed or seriously reduced the squadrons with first line fighters we have total air superiority in the region around Vladivostok...

Runway hits 154

Aircraft Attacking:
15 x Ki-49 Helen bombing at 11000 feet

all bomber strikes focussed on Vladivostok today, nearly 600 IJAAF medium bombers dropped their load over this base. 600 IJAAF bombers is the max I can field, guess I have some additional 200 spread over the rest of the map doing nav search or are reserves in important areas. If my bomber force isnīt hit hard due to running unescorted into enemy fighters I think those numbers are sufficient...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Petropavlovsk , at 84,32

Japanese aircraft
B5N Kate x 64

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:
23 casualties reported

Port hits 4

Aircraft Attacking:
8 x B5N Kate bombing at 26000 feet

preparing for our invasion next turn... have to take this base to make it impossible to fly Western Allied short legged fighters from Alaska to the Russian. Without help from the American, the Russian Airforce wonīt have a chance... 200 Corsairs could change this immediately though, therefore Petropavlosk is muchas importante...

Out of over 100 IJN bombers at Lunga 45 launch to attack this big TF with some two dozen spotted ships. Guess this attack has sunk 3 AKs... glad my bombers donīt attack the spotted TF at Efate that is sitting under two dozen of enemy fighters on Cap. Itīs a gamble to keep my bombers on nav attack 15 hexes as they could also attack a Capped target and sinking a couple of small AKs isnīt worth losing my high exp bomber pilots...

OUCH! The single base force here has 8 inch guns and really takes a toll on my invasion. The port attack yesterday obviously had NO effect... looks like Miller thought I would again attack Vladivostok this turn as he sent hundreds of Laggs to LRCAP Vladivostok (150+ spotted over the base). They must have come from Uglahamensk as they are really short legged and canīt reach Vladivostok from any other base. Ughlahamensk (level 4 af) itself was uncapped though and one strike hits the base quite hard. Not enough hits on the runway to close it but 31 hits on the base facilities should make maintaining enemy aircraft here quite hard. Only one enemy unit is spotted here, so Iīm sure repairing the damage will take quite long... And we destroyed over 4 dozen of Lagg-3s again... Only one out of three bases launched a strike due to bad weather today...

we take the empty base with itīs ressources and oil fields and once again we are unlucky doing this... the oil and ressources are 35% damaged... we wonīt repair the ressources but will repair the 125 damaged oil points. Guess we can afford this, will ship in supplies from India and from the SRA. The home islands are quite low on supplies. After we have conquered the major ressource and HI sites in Russia (hopefully not totally damaged) we should produce more than enough supplies.

Iīve never experienced supply and fuel shortages in any of my Japanese PBEMs but in this one, supply and especially fuel is really low, due to my continuing major operations and the fact that lift capacity of merchants was nearly reduced, which means that it takes twice the fuel to haul things around... No matter where the fleet is heading too, Iīve always having trouble to have enough fuel on hand...

Japanese Ships

Allied ground losses:
103 casualties reported

could I achieve the same results as the Allied have been doing nearly all of the time in this campaign? With 800+ aircraft attacking this base so far and recon ac flying mission to Vladivostok, there is no explanation for me why our bombardment once again totally sucks...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 70,112

Japanese Ships
SS I-23

Allied Ships
AK Joan Moller, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

I-23 sinks an already damaged small AK heading towards Noumea... Miller is obviously mass employing bombers on nav or asw search from New Caledonia now as all my subs were spotted several times as well as attacked... one sub was hit and is in sinking condition... vacuum cleaning again...

4 x SB-2 bombing at 10000 feet

I swapped out my bombers with fighters on Cap here but wasnīt sure another Russian strike would go in as Miller can see my aircraft transfers immediately. Looks like he didnīt notice it though and in fact he was quite lucky as most of the strike failed to locate the target. What was going in was shot up quite badly but nevertheless, more than a dozen bombers dropped their load over the airfield. One Tojo was destroyed on the ground...

bad weather once again prevented us from striking enemy airfields...

donīt like seeing that many Migs... attacking an empty base of no value, thatīs just a training run for his bombers... but to be honest, I doubt that training runs for the Russians are really worth it as they definetely wonīt have the time to train up. Within the first two or three weeks the faith of the Russian airforce will be decided...

a quiet day overall as my airforce in Russia once again stayed grounded... looks like the Russian winter saved Moscow against the Wehrmacht and now Russian spring thunderstorms save the Russian airforce... one thing to note is that Miller seems to move OUT of Vladivostok. Recon tells me that over a dozen units moved to Uglhahamensk last turn. Boy, could that mean heīs retreating North with everything he has? In every case it looks like he gives Vladivostok up. Where will he hold then? Please tell me itīs not like people posted here that itīs a possible run for Irkutsk... Well, in every case, Miller has 1,5 weeks left to redeploy his troops, then I will give order to my troops to march. Every base he wants to give up is a present for me, no matter if he will end up with all his troops in one base, no matter what base. I can leave 10.000 assault points behind in Russia and those can block every Russian Army, no matter how many reinforcements there will be.

After getting this turns recon Iīm 100% sure that Miller wonīt defend Vladivostok and Uglahamensk as weīve spotted one and a half dozen units moving North. Miller also asked in his email if 30th May will be the day I set my troops to march again. 30th May will be the day when my troops will start marching again and Iīm curious where the enemy will be then...

oh how I hate this stupid feature when the Allied can see the Japanese air transferes... this is a perfect example of how BS it really is... spotted an enemy TF in range of Canton so I decided to move in some bombers. 135 Zeros set to 90% Cap as I knew Miller would launch a strike... Well, we get the laughable number of 57 Zeros into the air and Allied 4Es just laugh about our IJNAF fighters... of course we also didnīt launch a strike to attack the enemy TF...

combined strike from two bases again while one baseīs strike partially failed to locate the target. This could have been bloody for us if the other base wouldnīt have launched. We meet a high number of Laggs that get to bounce us in the beginning downing some of our escorts. After losing two dozen fighters, the Russian turned back, our medium bombers turned the airfield into a moon like landscape... another 118 first line fighters destroyed today... good news... if Miller keeps on fighting in this area where I can mass my airforce in a couple of bases near the front then he will soon run out of aircraft...

4 x G4M1 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet

we then launch a strike against the ships at Efate and achieve quite a nice result considering the size of our strike. Itīs unbelievable for me that Miller doesnīt Cap his base when he knows that I can strike his TF from Lunga... another two medium sized AKs and a PG sunk for one Betty lost... would have the other 50 bombers joint this strike then most of the TF would have gotten annihilated... and with Cap over the base, most of my strike would have suffered...

Thought this screenshot could be interesting also. Our victory points went through 50.000 today and thatīs quite a lot IMO. If Miller loses big amounts of troops in Russia then this will catapult us up to over 55.000 I guess...

Iīm amazed to see Miller attacking here again. The Migs are shot down at a 4:1 ratio but the only thing that saved us here was the real bad gun value of the Mig which is only 4. As you can see a hell a lot of Tojos were damaged and would the Migs carry a cal. 50 six pack, we would have lost more Tojos than we would have shot down Russian fighters. This attack was far from being devastating for the attacker. Out of 160+ fighters at the base, some 100 were airborne...

ouch, flak fire was murderous... out of the 15 Helens lost we also lose 13 crews... This engagement once again shows how "bad" the Tojo is as a dogfighter. Not because it still achieves a 3:1 kill rate but because equally skilled Oscars took down something like 15 enemy fighters for no loss. While speed seems to be one of the major factors for A2A in WITP, if you have a totally crappy man rating you get a totally crappy dogfighter. While the Oscar II is far slower than the Tojo, it is far more agile and this proves to be an important factor. The Russian fighters nearly didnīt get a shot at the Oscars.

The air war in Russia isnīt far from being won...

now that was more than surprising for me. Miller must have seen that I have fighters at this base (Cap about 40% of what could be airborne ) but he still sends in his bombers. Most of them turned back but a couple dropped their load, doing no damage...

another strike, another time the usual pathetic Cap numbers... More Pe-2 (the best Russian bomber) are shot down for no loss on our side... I would use the Russian airforce quite differently. They donīt have really a chance to inflict huge losses on my airforce as my fighters are just too experienced but they could definetely do better if differently employed IMO.

MSW Stawell
MSW Toowoomba
MSW Warrnambool

have had this sub here for a couple of days already as weīve spotted three or four dozen enemy TFs at the atoll... the sub never attacked but was today target of an ASW TF that fortunately achieved nothing... sub will leave this place again...

Allied aircraft losses

IL-2m3 Shturmovik: 5 destroyed, 17 damaged

Airbase hits 2
Runway hits 19

Aircraft Attacking:
13 x IL-2m3 Shturmovik bombing at 2000 feet

Miller keeps attacking this place, for whatever reason. The enemy escorts turned around quite quickly, the flying tanks were higher in morale and two dozen of them pressed through their attack that succesfully torched half a dozen Tojos on the ground. As expected, those IL-2 are really hard to down, nevertheless our fighters take a toll on them and Iīm sure their morale is wrecked now and further opposed attacks will probably turn back...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Harbin , at 65,27

Allied aircraft
P-40N Warhawk x 35
B-25J Mitchell x 19
Pe-2 x 40

Allied aircraft losses
Pe-2: 6 damaged

Resources hits 11

Aircraft Attacking:
12 x Pe-2 bombing at 6000 feet
10 x B-25J Mitchell bombing at 6000 feet

now that was a real surprise!!!! During the replay I was only surprised because the P-40N and the Mitchells are CHINESE squadrons! After the replay I was again surprised because I then realized that the enemy bombed my resource centers and not the airfield. This means that this was the first Russian attack against my positions that was really worth it as itīs the first time that they achieved some damage. 30 resource points were destroyed today. Thatīs no biggy but it has alerted me and I am now in the process of transferring more fighter squadrons into the region to guard my important bases. Losing a couple of dozen resources means NOTHING. And thatīs the point where Iīm wondering why Miller is attacking resources at Harbin and NOT the oil centers, which would hurt me. Thank you Paul!

I expect to conquer more than 1000 resource centers in Russia and hundreds of HI centers (if I donīt get totally sh*tty die rolls) so if I lose a hundred resource points due to Russian attacks then this doesnīt really scare me. I will have decent fighter cover over my oil centers and am also working on bringing fighters in position over my less important resource and HI sites that are in range of Allied bombers out of Russia. The transfer of Chinese bombers to Russia has increased the effective range for Allied bombers from 5 (Pe-2) to 8 (B-25J). The two big airfields in the South are abandoned but there are a couple of smaller airfields further North from Vladivostok, the biggest being a level 5 airfield. In the "long run" we will focus more on defending our important bases than to try to knock out the enemy airfields. The enemy is so low on morale already that they will mostly turn back anyway if they meet our fighters. If the enemy keeps running North, then he will abandon his airfields in the central region anyway and from his Northern bases, he canīt reach my important bases anyway (only with 4Es and I havenīt spotted any of them so far).

quite some Chinese fighters and quite a number of Russian bombers. As I havenīt noticed it early enough last turn that the enemy is NOT attacking my airfield but my resources I didnīt set my fighters on Cap but kept them on escort to guard my bombers on their attack today. At the end of the attack we have lost 78 resources in the last two turns. No biggy, but I should have had Cap here this turn already. My fault... I donīt consider the Chinese Warhawks as a real threat, I guess they will just be low experienced targets for my fighters as soon as we engage them. Next turn sees Cap here, wonder if Miller dares to attack three times in a row. Iīve mentioned that I donīt get why heīs bombing that what Iīve got more than enough of and not attacking oil sites. Thanks again!

this turn quite nicely again shows what this version of Nikmod has made out of flak in general. While the Allied flak is super duper deadly as it always was in Nikmod (enough to make bases immune to airattacks, without having a single fighter there), the Japanese flak is in total LESS effective than in stock. Why? Because Allied bombers are so highly durable that the increase of flak effects seems to not even nearly compensate that. Allied bombers are more dangerous to Japanese flak than vice versa. There are three totally undamaged and fully supplied base forces at Port Moresby and we damage 2 (in words: T W O) enemy bombers going in at 12.000ft, which I would consider quite low. Ridicoulos. 3 bombers are lost to ops at least. Hey, three bombers lost to ops is a success...

and thatīs the performance of Allied flak... Going in at 16.000ft and our strike is hit hard. While we do nice damage on the ground (not devastating though as the enemy flew to attack Harbin - where this strike is coming from) the damage from flak fire is insane and something we canīt sustain...

Aircraft Attacking:

have set this strike to attack in the afternoon and due to going in at extended range we achieve a totally crappy hit rate, while flak is again murderous... No there are not a dozen AA units here, in total weīve spotted 7 units, but surely not all base forces... damn flak, really make Allied bases immune, as attacking them is just stupid if you decide to do that... 26 Helen lost today , 24 crews dead... result from attacking a couple of Allied base forces at 16.000ft...

Well, at least you know not to do that again.

I will have to do it again though. Even if the chances to take out this base are very small, there is a chance to do it. But itīs about the same thing as it was before the (succesful) Allied resupply attempt: supply. If they run out of it, the base will fall. If not, well...

The good thing is that I have A LOT of divisions available. A new one has just arrived in Japan and will be shipped to Darwin also. And as long as Miller canīt do a big style offensive as long can I try to take Wyndham. If he loses all those troops here, I donīt know what divisions should mount an ongoing offensive in early 44.

But to be honest, looking at those adjusted av still makes me thinking about a joke. His troops are fully prepped and fully supplied, sitting behind level 9 forts. My troops are fully supplied, fully prepped, even in range of the Southern Area Army and still get an adjusted av that is just ridicoulos. As ridicoulos as the Allied adjusted av, that nearly was multiplied by four...
