what I didnīt really think about was the fact that I would provide Miller a training target when I moved towards Townsville. I thought that moving more than a dozen AA units support by lots of base forces would be enough to at least not permit training runs... I was wrong after seeing how my AA units were shot up by the bombers but not vice versa... but Iīm not yet done in this area and I have to live with the fact that we will provide a training target for two months or so... beware of my movements as soon as Wyndham surrenders...

283 aircraft coming out of a base that doesnīt allow more than 5x50 (+ max 10%)? When there are 283 ac flying out of this base then this means there are 100% surely more than 283, probably over 300... is it that hard to follow house rules? Why am I doing it...

my Tabbies will be used to fly AA units around and thatīs what theyīve done here. Three AA units were moved in to support the half dozen base forces there and it showed some effect today. Lol, isnīt it insane that you have to move in three AA rgts to support half a dozen base forces that already bristle with AA guns?

as it looks now, I guess Irkutsk will never fall. Why? Because itīs not possible to take the forts down and as long as there are level 9 forts the enemy will rebuild his troops faster than we can knock them out. Third attack in a row with hundreds of combat engineers and the third time in a row that we donīt knock down a fort... pffff

those mega battles are just not working in WITP, no matter if air, sea or ground...

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

Miller nearly was lucky enough again to stop me. Exactly today another Russian division moved into this hex. Without the big bomber strike yesterday the enemy could have held the hex. Now itīs time to kill off the region fortress...

Ground combat at Chungking

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 15834 troops, 180 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1657

Defending force 146724 troops, 473 guns, 8 vehicles, Assault Value = 3015

nothing to fear at Chungking, we could even move out another bgd...

Attacking force 22696 troops, 266 guns, 7 vehicles, Assault Value = 2454

Defending force 163516 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 4801

all those units (something like four dozen) that were marching out of Chungking were, according to my recon flights, heading to Yunan and seem to be now also heading towards Kweiyang. Could it be that the Chinese try to kick me out of this hex to end my siege? Could mean huge trouble if they would be able to do so as then South China is all open to them. Two divisions were set to move to Kweiyang to bolster my defenses. Itīs a pity I didnīt have the time and mood to take this base as it would make it impossible for the Chinese to break through here if I would have level 9 forts and the Chinese would be low on supply (which I definetely think they are). Itīs a wooden hex but thereīs definetely a chance for them if they bring enough troops I fear. There will be hordes running towards our MGs throwing stones at us...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 08/18/43

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 74,38

Japanese Ships
AK Sakito Maru, Shell hits 7, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
SS Steelhead

damn Steelhead again... another succesful attack, the big AK has no chance to make port... Radar on the subs make them attack nearly every TF if it is in the same hex as the sub... I really wonder why I have yet to see a major sub offensive. Miller must have dozens of subs... All with working torps and radar... and we have? Dozens of more or less useless PC and PG...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 49,45

Japanese Ships
PC Ch 1
PC Shonon Maru #15
PC Kyo Maru #11
PC Kyo Maru #6
PC Kyo Maru #2
PC Fumi Maru

Allied Ships
SS KXVI, hits 7, on fire, heavy damage

those PCs werenīt useless at all... the sub was hit by an Ann on nav search South of Takao and I expected it to move East so I sent out three ASW TFs... one ends up in the same hex during the night and the PCs achieved 5 direct hits, which has been the best result in terms of direct hits since the start of the war I guess... sub is confirmed sunk... trading one AK for one enemy sub today... thatīs ok with me...

I've finally read this thing all the way through. Congratulations on a very well-played game!

I have learned a LOT just from reading this, especially regarding ground warfare and sieges - enough to take a heavily defended Noumea in my game. Thanks for the lessons!

One minor question - I never have any trouble producing enough Betties to replace all Nells by early '42, yet I notice you are still using Nells into '43. Is there a reason for this decision? I never gave much thought to retaining any Nells and wonder if I'm missing something other than the one hex range advantage, which means little to me as I rarely set either aircraft to beyond 15 hex torp range.

thanks, hope you enjoyed the reading.

the reason I that I still have Nells in use is the fact that they are nearly no different than the Betties at all so Iīm just using up the pool. Iīve never produced Nells and I guess there are some 60-100 left (pool and onmap together). I want to pull out the maximum out of my industry, so no reason to let the Nells rot in pool or being scrapped. I ony produced moderate numbers of Betties but have 200+ in the pool I guess. Everything focusses on the Frances at the moment, should come online in the next couple of months. This will be the only IJNAF bomber of the future together with a few daitais of Betties equipped with Ohkas.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 08/20/43

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1008 encounters mine field at Nanomea Atoll (87,101)

Allied Ships
PG Warrego
PG Swan

looks like the TF that hit a mine when going in is now going out again...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Singapore at 23,50

Japanese Ships
PC Sado, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
PC Matsuwa
PC Ishigaki
PC Hachijo
DD Numakaze
DD Namikaze

Allied Ships
SS Trident, hits 4

more of the same, as usual... sub spotted by search aircraft, sub in my base, created 5x6 ASW TFs in and around Singapore, the sub attacks first and hits one of the precious high ASW PCs. The PC will probably make it as it is disbanded into Singaporeīs port immedietely. 4 laughable near misses in return but Trident was later reported hit by a Helen...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Tsitsihar , at 65,24

Japanese aircraft
Ki-44-IIb Tojo x 21
Ki-45 KAIa Nick x 18

Allied aircraft
Pe-2 x 113

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-44-IIb Tojo: 11 damaged
Ki-45 KAIa Nick: 18 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
Pe-2: 4 destroyed, 29 damaged

Airbase hits 3
Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 16

Aircraft Attacking:
1 x Pe-2 bombing at 10000 feet

Nightfighters donīt work. They do nothing during the night (which isnīt surprising at all) but they also must get some kind of mega penalty during the day. The stats of the Nick arenīt bad at all and it should be more or less a bomber killer if it gets through to the bombers but in fact it is 100% useless... 18 of the 18 Nicks in the air were driven off by enemy defensive fire and the Niks managed to damage two enemy bombers. LOL, what a joke. Lesson learnt, all nightfighters will be brought to Japan and stood down in the next weeks.

But we are lucky, those Pe-2 on extended range are as useless as Japanese bombers, they hit nothing and to make it even better, Miller attacked my airfield and not my industry...

Something like 30 Chinese units are marching towards Kweiyang! Wonder how far the enemyīs av will go up. We have two bgds moving in so our base av should be around 3000. Reasonable thinking should convince me that 3000 base av, well supplied, fully prepped (donīt know if that helps if you donīt own the base) and a wooden hex shoul be enough to withstand 7000 Chinese av that have no or nearly no supply... we will see. In fact, I canīt do anything as there are no more Japanese troops around at the moment.

An important day for the Empire...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 08/21/43

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Tsitsihar , at 65,24

Japanese aircraft
A6M3a Zero x 32
Ki-61 Ic x 19

Allied aircraft
P-40N Warhawk x 27
Pe-2 x 152

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M3a Zero: 1 destroyed, 7 damaged

Pe-2: 7 destroyed, 36 damaged

Airbase hits 5
Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 17

Aircraft Attacking:
8 x Pe-2 bombing at 10000 feet

after only light losses for the attacker yesterday they show up again today and meet a different Cap. The 100% useless nightfighters were flown out and the Tojos were replaced by Tonies and Zeroes which means that we dish out more damage today. While the enemy escorts failed to locate the target yesterday, they show up with the full number of bombers today. Even though absolutely succesful, fighting the escorts did take time and the number of enemy bombers was just too big. After fighting their way through, around 80 bombers dropped their load again and again on the airfield. Nice! But why isnīt Miller bombing my industry? If he wouldnīt have lost his Mitchells and Liberators, he could achieve something. Why? Because I was dumb enough to move out all my units that have engineers in them. Only an aviation regiment is sitting at the airfield and this could have turned out bad. If he would be able to knock out the airfield completely then he could wreck my industry because I canīt repair the airfield without engineers. My bad. But I guess Miller doesnīt know that I donīt have engineers at the base and I have already increased the number of fighters at this base. The Pe-2 are low on morale now so I guess I will keep them honest until my engineers arrive at the base.

Miller nukes Gili Gili. At least he also lost a couple of his bombers in this attack today. Such an attack is devastating as it puts an airfield out of operation for at least a week. Five of those attacks could shut down nearly all of my airfields in the area around Port Moresby. Not good...

and also Apamama is hit hard today. We lose too many aircraft on the ground. Donīt know why so many were sitting on the ground anyway and the same goes for the fact why there is Cap over Apamama. Iīve set two Tony sentais on LRCAP Tarawa so there shouldnīt be any Cap over this base and all my Helens should be out on nav search... oh well... I have to withdraw again and just wait for the things to come. Trying to oppose the enemy (even if unescorted) is a bad idea - as if I wouldnīt know that already... when I have to move in a TF, I have to also move in massive Cap. The TFs unloads and heads back, pull out the Cap also. Thatīs the way to go...

big day for the Allied bomber force it seems. Looks like every base that had big numbers of 4E bombers launched an attack today... losses in total: 10 heavy bombers (if you include the Ventura that is dropping the same number of bombs than a B-17)... the Ventura also seems not that immune to everything as the 4Es...

BANZAI! While I expected to do at least another 3 attacks, the enemy defense absolutely collapsed today and an adjusted Japanese av that nearly achieves the base av is enough to get an impressing 13:1 today. A months long siege ended with a big Japanese victory today. BANZAI! As it stands now, the operation against Northern Australia seems to have turned out as the biggest victory of the war so far and the world is impressed by another succesful combined operation of the Japanese forces. The only downside of this whole operation was the loss of nearly two dozen DDs to mines and PTs and the lucky torp hit on a heavy cruiser that blew up the cruiserīs magazine. All in all it was nevertheless absolutely worth it. We not just forced nearly 150.000 enemy troops to surrender, we also sunk two US CVs, three RN CVs, a modern US BB, three RN BBs and dozens of other ships in the range of DDs, AOs, AKs, etc.

We achieved absolutely more than we could have expected. All we first wanted to do is to stop the enemy expansion out of Timor after the loss of Lautern. It was an all out attempt and while we threw in the kitchen sink, the enemy refused to do so until it was too late. IMO, there were thee big mistakes done by the Allied:

a) concentrating all or most major ground forces at Broome and Derby (due to Allied intel as all my troops were planning for those bases ) when I decided to land at Darwin

b) not using every available bomber and fighter against my invasion of Darwin. No matter if I employed the whole IJN, with four big airbases on Northern Australia and a big base on Timor the Allied could have wrecked havoc on my ships.

c) during the months long siege of Wyndham the deciding factor in the end was supply. As long as the enemy was supplied and as long as we couldnīt knock down the forts, there was no chance at all to achieve something. We could only hope to stalemate the enemy as long as possible, which would have been a success also. Then the Allied show up with all their carriers and lots of other major ships to bring in a supply convoy. No matter how many losses the Allied took in this operation, the task of the mission was to bring in supply and I guess I havenīt been able to sink a single of the supply carrying AKs. BUT and thatīs a big BUT, we spotted something like only a dozen big AKs, which would make up for 66.000 supplies which is by far not enough to feed nearly 200.000 troops that are holding against ongoing attacks. And this must have been the biggest mistake that has lead to this disaster. Would Miller have used 80 AKs, then there would have been 440.000 supplies which would have been enough to hold out forever. Forever means at least long enough until I would have given up or would have been forced to give up due to enemy invasions into my territory somewhere else where I would have needed those troops that sieged Wyndham.

Itīs easy to speak about your opponentīs mistakes when you achieve a victory but my operation wasnīt perfect either:

a) just too many DD losses... I was so pissed off by the enemy super duper mines and PTs that I just refused to accept that itīs totally off that I would lose one or two DDs to mines every time a surface or bombardment TF of mine entered one of the three enemy hexes. The enemy goes in and out of my bases without having to fear anything from 10.000+ mines. The Allied surely didnīt have more than 2000 mines at each base, yet my DDs got wrecked. I should have just stopped the bombardment tries as they didnīt achieve anything anyway. Another thing that works super well for the Allied in this campaign but nearly none at all for me. Never have seen such onesided results concerning mines and bombardments like in this game before. A smart Japanese player would have just accepted it that itīs not worth it and would have stopped them. I didnīt and suffered...

b) I pulled out my tank units for the assault on Russia and opened up another huge front... too early! I could have achieved much more if my tanks would have staid at Wyndham and I shouldnīt have brought them to Russia before Wyndham fell. Then bring them to Russia and do what Iīm doing there now. Would have delayed the Russian adventure by probably two or three months but would have sped up things in total. But I guess the fear of major Allied counterattacks through the Pacific was the reason why I wanted to take on the Russian asap as I could then pull out lots of divisions to garisson the continent in early 44. As it looks now, this wonīt happen before mid 44 but honestly, I seriously doubt that the Allied will threat the continent before 45 anyway.

After having my doubts if we would ever be able to take out Wyndham it was in the end satisfying to see the base surrendering with still so many troops left. The enemy flew out major parts of two USMC divs and at least another USARMY div. Iīm sure that he also was able to pull out fragments of every unit and if heīs luckier than me then those units will rebuild. But that will take time and time is all I need. We will lose in the end, the question is only when will that be...

We scored impressing 2.414 points for Allied ground losses today, now being at 25.490. BANZAI!

And hereīs the screenshot of the units that finally surrendered. There were also major Allied HQs and several units more than fitted into the window of the ground combat. 1st and 2nd USMC div had only fragments surrendering so no idea how much of those units really was brought out. Miller told me he was able to bring out nearly all combat squads but not many support squads but Iīm not sure if this is right or wrong intel.

we decided to attack the staging base of the Pe-2s... first a sweep goes in to take on the Cap. I donīt know how those Russian fighters were able to fight the far better German aircraft compared to the Japanese ones as their gun value is so bad they just canīt take down my fighters. Itīs like sending up Oscars with two crappy MGs against Jugs... this of course only if the stats in the game are correct...

boy is that crap... itīs so crap... can this be real? I have no clue how many AA units there really are at this base but what can I say about this stupid attack? Iīm going in higher than the Allied do all the time but does it help me?

19 Helens lost in this attack? Why not call it the "Japanese canīt attack Allied bases mod"??? Sorry, but giving the Allied an at least ten times more effective flak is off IMO. There is no doubt that Allied flak was better, even far better, but it wasnīt that excessive. If you have 10 dozen Japanese big calibre AA guns and they do nothing against raids coming in at 10.000ft and you have two dozen Allied guns of the same calibre and get murderous flak then I wonder if the flak effect and the durability of aircraft really is right. It wasnīt just the Allied flak itself that was better, when you look at their ships, it was also and to a high degree the huge numbers of AA guns that really made a difference. But I doubt that one 20mm Oerlikon is ten times as effective as one 25mm Japanese AA gun. In Nikmod, it is...

but again, what am I complaining about. I know how it is, so itīs just me being stupid to attack a base where I could expect more than one base force. And more than one base force means the Allied base is immune to Japanese air attacks...

we are moving more troops to Irkutsk but Iīm unsure if itīs worth to attack or if I should wait for the 8 eng units I will bring from Australia. But they canīt be expected to arrive within the next couple of weeks. With the eng regiments from Australia we will field something like 20 eng regiments. Do you think that will bring down the forts? After the fall of Wyndham, Miller already asked what my next target would be. Perth, Alice Springs, Townsville or Cairns. Well, all of them are on my agenda... The biggest problem with those bases is the fact that I canīt surpress them with my airforce which means that in the case the bases are about to fall, Miller can move in ships to pull out his troops to save them...

the Russian region fortress finally surrendered. We scored 60 points for ground losses and are now at 25.558 in total. Divs are moving further North into the next hex where they will encounter the next Russian region fortress in the mountains. Guess the enemy wonīt move in any divs after last time having two of them forced to retreat. If he does, then I will use massive A2G support to disrupt the divisions. guess we wonīt see lesst than the 650 ac I have now in training mode for the rest of the war. The numbers will probably even go up as the war goes on. As we canīt put more than 650 into Clark field and Bataan we will have to look for another target that is just one hex from our base but thatīs not easy, if not impossible at the moment. And as soon as we start flying training runs from more than one hex, we start losing 3-6 ac a day doing those training runs and thatīs not that good...

Now THAT is a victory. Allied LCU, transport and capital ship losses are just horrendous for Miller. I don't see how he seriously threatens you until late '44, and even then his only option will probably be island hopping.

I quickly went through the last few pages - I've been too busy lately to fully follow.  Congratulations, Chris, this really was a large scale operation which paid back every invested penny - with a 666% interest rate !   Even if the Allies get plenty of everything, building back all those LCUs will take a long time.  I wonder if many of them became ghosts.

Now, it's time to finish the conquest of Australia.

thanks guys

The Allied do get plenty of everything, except ground units, better say major infantry units. IMO, there are only two ways of hurting the Allied. Sink lots of shipping or destroy lots of ground units. While we are far from sinking lots of shipping (some 600+ ships lost so far) we arenīt doing bad in destroying Western Allied ground units as weīve destroyed several divs/bgds in India and now we did the same in Australia. Even if the divs in Australia arenīt destroyed or havenīt turned into ghosts, it will still take at least 6 months to get a div from 10% back to 100% I guess. 6 months means they wonīt be ready by mid 44 and until then I will have also received the next major bunch of ground reinforcements when speaking of divs and bgds.

And what we shouldnīt forget at the moment is the fact that Iīm putting pressure on Miller and not the other way around. Even though he could throw those 2000 assault points he landed on Canton Island somewhere else but I donīt see that happening within the next 1,5 months as I wouldnīt use them for an atoll assault if not at least 70 prepped. Otherwise what can he do? Not much I guess as those troops that assaulted Canton Island should be it more or less. And the rest of the Allied combat units is trying to defend the area around Cairns and Townsville. Iīve got more than 4000 av at Charter Towers and have now also freed up 4000 av from Wyndham to be used somewhere so this could result in the next bloody ground battle.

When thereīs one thing the Japanese have during the whole war then it is ground units. They by far donīt have the firepower of Allied ground units but you have loads of them and while you need a lot of units to defend a large area, if you are on the offense and you attack one area, those high number of troops can be pretty devastating in the end. And as long as I keep up the pressure with the ground units, Miller has to more or less focus not to lose more troops in Australia than to send his inf units out to attack one of my places.

The LCU losses were in fact horrendous so far for Miller, donīt think that the capital ship losses were that bad for him though. Even though he lost four US and three RN CVs (not counting the CVEs), he surely already has or shortly will get the first US CVs back that were sunk long ago. And there surely will come new ones out of the shipyards too in the next months. I guess he already or will shortly be able to field a full CV force (with 450 carrier based ac). This means he already has offensive capability, what he needs are the ground units for it. He has lost half a dozen BBs and probably a dozen cruisers but I guess he must have something like 20 BBs and dozens of cruisers. Same goes of course also for the DDs even though weīve sunk a lot of them.

Island hopping may be an option but you should not forget that in WITP (other than AE) you can make islands or atolls more than a tough nut and if I would decide to make Marcus Island, Wake or another atoll a super fortress than thereīs no possibility to overcome the defender. Same goes for the mountaineous islands, with level 9 forts, ample supply, a mountaineous hex and 2000 assault points there is no way to take the base by amphibious attacks.

IMO, the only way for him isnīt island hopping, but going up the way through New Guinea as this is the place where he can hop from base to base within his massed airforce. And you canīt put 1500 av at every Japanese base on New Guinea to defend it. But it will of course be a slow and bloody way to fight your way into the SRA and I can asure you I will do my best to make it really bloody for the enemy.

Miller attacked my PORT? I donīt know if he clicked on the wrong mission or if it was deliberately ordered to bomb the port. We get a funny Cap rate of 25% today and Iīve thought my airfield would be trashed as usual just to find out that the port was targetted. What is this? Pre invasion attack? Canīt be, why should he attack Makin when Baker, Apamama and Tarawa is still in my hands? Does that make sense? Not to me, would be a step too far IMO...

note: not ONE B-24 was lost, coming from a level 4 airfield (too small for a B-24)... I guess we wonīt really hurt the 4Es until we field massive numbers of fighters with a gun value of 12. That wonīt happen until early 44 (for the IJNAF, Jack and George) and mid 44 (for the IJAAF, Frank)...

we canīt bomb from lower alt as the flak is just too strong, even though only 7 units are reported at this base (guess thereīs a region fortress and perhaps one or two base forces together with some inf units). Hit rate is meager but at least we donīt lose more than a couple of bombers due to attacking from only two hexes range... next turn showed that Miler brought all his ac back to Blagoveshchensk to have the save at a base that has 21st century AAA...

I really would love to have it as easy to launch those massive ground attacks. Donīt know why the game engine restricts you to fly ground attacks. Why shouldnīt you fly ground attacks in real life if you order your ac to fly? In WITP you order ground attacks and usually nothing happens... at least as the Japanese...

Miller floods the waters around Japan with his subs at the moment. Looks like heīs started a sub offensive as we spot half a dozen subs daily. Guess that means there are something like a dozen or more subs around. 30 DDs in 5 TFs were sent out to take care of the threat. Gato takes 9 near misses today and is probably out of action and has to return. Expected sys damage 10-20.

7000+ av at Irkutsk now, another 1000 as reserve at Ulan Ude, the base four hexes South of Irkutsk. Iīm unsure if I should start a serious of attacks now that probably will wreck my troops or if I should wait for the engineer rgts from Derby that should arrive within a month or so at Irkutsk.

Point taken. I was thinking Miller's few successes have come from his atoll assaults using the patented "search plane empowered bombardment" technique. However, when he hits an IJA division on one of those atolls it could get ugly. Still, he may think the same way I did. Perhaps a trap can be baited in the Gilberts?

The first time that the massed Kingfishers werenīt used pre bombardment were during the attack on Canton Island. And it was obvious that the bombardments did not have such an effect as if he would have used three dozen floatplanes. But the outcome was the same. After "normal" bombardments of one and a half dozen BBs there was nothing left on the atoll. All CD units and base forces were 100% knocked out and the inf units mopped up my base in no time.

I wonīt really fight for anything until a line Marcus Island - Guam - Truk - Rabaul. If he comes island hopping then this will be the line I will draw and that will be strongly defended. This doesnīt mean I will just watch the Allied taking Tarawa or Kwajalein but I wonīt throw in the kitchen sink like I did it at Timor for example.

One IJA division would not have been enough to stop the assault on Canton Island for example as I had 400 av from inf units at the base and another 100 from base forces. The base forces were wiped out by the BBs which left 400 from the inf units but they could do nothing. So we are more or less speaking of 2 IJA divs on an atoll to really cause trouble.

have ramped up production to get results with R&D, that was the reason for having so many. Have already switched nearly 100 over to R&D of the Frank and in something like a month or so we wonīt have more production capacity than 350-400 anymore. With that production capacity I plan to actually build something like 200 a month.

itīs nice to see the three base forces on Wallis Island achieve some kills from time to time... problem is I canīt pick them up even though the airfield is only 30% damaged... not with transports, not with patrols... this just sucks once again... pick up unit order doesnīt work where it should work but does work for picking up units that are 10 hexes out of range of US transports... love it...
