It's a narrow 1-1 at Changsha.  Didn't you bring any armor there ?  Only 28 AFVs ?

no armor. My armor has just flanked the city to the South and closed the kettle to the West this turn. I have now 1500 assault points sitting at the base SW of Changsha to block reinforcements from there and another strong force sitting across the river W of Chansha to block reinforcements from the North. With my tanks finishing the total surrounding of Changsha, this means the Chinese already have lost the 13 units there. Will mean some 70.000+ troops lost.

Well, the units reform, at least the chinese units, but this will take time and should allow you to make a clean sweep across southern China.

yes the units will come back. But it takes time until they show up in Chungking again and when they arrive, they are all at 1/3 strenght. And then it will take supplies and far more time to bring them back up to strenght. There are two things that the Chinese don´t have: supplies and time!

Good news at Canton, that's one more BF lost, if he did not evacuate a cadre.

I doubt that he will have evacced something. More important is the fact that he now has a base in his flank when he will have to bring material towards Aussie land...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/17/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Palmyra at 106,85

Japanese Ships
SS I-8

Allied Ships
AO Sabine, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
DD Phelps
DD Porter
AO Kaskaskia

3 out of 6 torps hit the fuel loaden AO and needless to say, it sank immediately. Either Miller is bringing fuel to Palmyra or there are some TFs in the area that are in need of a replenishment TF...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Ichang , at 47,33

Allied aircraft
IL-4c x 7

Allied aircraft losses

Day Air attack on 48th Chinese Corps, at 44,40

Japanese aircraft

Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 36

Allied aircraft
P-40B Tomahawk x 26

Allied aircraft losses
P-40B Tomahawk: 7 destroyed, 10 damaged

Allied ground losses:
22 casualties reported

Aircraft Attacking:
11 x Ki-27 Nate bombing at 2000 feet

After the unsuccesful LRCAP attempt yesterday, the AVG tries again today. While yesterday we were only able to take down 3 Tomahawks, today 8 in total are lost. That´s great, monthly replacement of P-40B is only 10! This way, the AVG will be worn down pretty fast. Performance of this Allied "elite-group" has been catastrophic so far...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Hopei Militia Division, at 52,28

Japanese aircraft
Ki-30 Ann x 10
Ki-32 Mary x 8
Ki-51 Sonia x 10

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:

Air attack on this Chinese unit and an ordered deliberate attack but guess what! The unit VANISHED after this attack!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Clark Field

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 137407 troops, 1856 guns, 37 vehicles, Assault Value = 2949

Defending force 50726 troops, 586 guns, 217 vehicles, Assault Value = 1301

Allied ground losses:
122 casualties reported
Guns lost 2
Vehicles lost 1

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Changsha

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 184941 troops, 2121 guns, 22 vehicles, Assault Value = 3250

Defending force 65783 troops, 322 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1810

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 4

Japanese max assault: 3273 - adjusted assault: 1196

Allied max defense: 1761 - adjusted defense: 1787

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 4)

Japanese ground losses:
2543 casualties reported
Guns lost 96
Vehicles lost 5

Allied ground losses:
1644 casualties reported
Guns lost 32

Second deliberate attack, second time that we bring down a fort level. While our first attack achieved a 1:1 this time we get a 0:1 with a horrible adjusted av. And still, the 1:1 resulted in twice the losses on our side with only half the losses on the Chinese side, so this attack was pretty good, even if we get only a 0:1. I guess it will take 3 or 4 more attacks and the City surrenders, so we plan to take this base within the next two or three weeks.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Changsha

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 46582 troops, 260 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1691

Miller and I have done a couple of turns yesterday with some interesting developments...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/18/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 151 encounters mine field at Soerabaja (22,65)

Japanese Ships
CA Mogami, Mine hits 1

MK6 mine hit, we were really lucky, the heavy cruiser ended the day with 11 sys, 7 flt. So the mine hit did only some 4 or 5 points of sys damage as the cruiser started the day with sys damage from previous operations already...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 103,73

Japanese Ships
SS I-4, hits 3

Allied Ships
DMS Chandler
DMS Lamberton
DMS Zane
DMS Elliot
DMS Southard

my subs around Johnston are still target of the enemy ASW forces...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Naval bombardment of Soerabaja, at 22,65

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
Hawk 75A: 1 destroyed
Do 24K-2: 1 destroyed
Wirraway: 1 destroyed
CW-22 Falcon: 1 destroyed
Brewster 339D: 1 destroyed
Lockheed 212: 1 destroyed
CW-21B Demon: 1 destroyed

Japanese Ships
CA Mikuma
CA Mogami
CA Chokai

Allied ground losses:
6221 casualties reported
Guns lost 49
Vehicles lost 15

Airbase hits 16
Airbase supply hits 7
Runway hits 65

I didn´t expect such a result, not at all after Mogami hit a mine. Lots of support troops, lots of recon and lots of bombers going in in the past raised the detection high enough to enable a nuke bombardment...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Naval bombardment of Canton Island, at 98,99

Allied Ships
CA Minneapolis
CL Helena
CL St. Louis
CA San Francisco
CL Honolulu
CL Phoenix
CA Astoria
CA Salt Lake City
CA Chester
CA Northampton
CA Indianapolis

Japanese ground losses:
216 casualties reported
Guns lost 5

Airbase hits 2
Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 15
Port hits 6
Port fuel hits 4
Port supply hits 9

whereas a big Allied cruiser sqadron only does little damage to the two naval inf units that took Canton. We were lucky here, a supply TF with 4 AKs left the base yesterday... Too many cruisers in one TF for my taste and I wonder how the enemy CV TF(s) look like...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Rabaul at 61,88

Japanese Ships
AK Tsukikawa Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
SS O23

All my ports are flooded with enemy subs. Truk, Rabaul, Palembang, Lae, Wake, Kwajalein, Gili Gili, Toboali, Canton Island... all ports where Miller thinks IJN ships could go has a sub sitting there. Nearly all of those subs have ASW forces above them but this helps nothing. Every time again I can only shake my head about the myth that you shouldn´t keep subs in a base hex...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Chungking , at 43,32

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 54
Ki-21 Sally x 206
Ki-15 Babs x 6

Allied aircraft
no flights

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21 Sally: 5 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
SB-2c: 12 destroyed
I-153c: 1 destroyed
IL-4c: 1 destroyed

Allied ground losses:
105 casualties reported

Airbase hits 24
Airbase supply hits 6

brought a lot of bombers to China and until yesterday, Chungking had 3 times more aircraft at the airfield. Me thinks the Allied ability to see the Japanese aircraft movements strikes once again as Miller dispersed his aircraft on a couple of airfields exactly the turn we move in a lot of bombers...

after my sub attacked an AO at Palmyra I set KB on full speed to move towards the atoll. KB ended up only in bombing range but Kates bombing from 10.000 ft is like using laser guided bombs, don´t know why but I always have the feeling that high exp, level bombing Kates from 10.000 ft hit more than high exp, dive bombing from 2.000 ft Vals...

We´re still in the morning phase and a small troop convoy is attacked. Interesting, 250kg AP bombs couldn´t penetrate the belt armor of PG Dawson! Both ships should be finished. The bad news is though, that Palmyra was reinforced. Reason for KB being in the area was that we had an invasion TF heading towards the atoll (some 7 days out) to take the base, while hoping to face only a base force. I´m not interested in atoll combat and the 120 assault points I´ve planned to throw at the base won´t be enough, even if there are only minor troops at the base. Means that after Johnston Island, also Palmyra is save now!

This is the afternoon strike and in the end we see 8 DDs going down. Losing 8 DDs in one day isn´t something to be happy about, not even for the Allied. Even when playing the Allied side, I always kinda feel short of DD escorts until mid 44 so sinking those 8 DDs is something I really like. Even though that our plans to take Johnston and Palmyra by coup de main failed I´m still happy with the outcome. The reason I wanted to take those bases is not to hold them at all costs but to inflict casualties on the Allied when they take them back. Casualties, escpeacilla within the enemy Navy. Sinking those 8 DDs and not taking the base is also fine with me as it would be fine if I would have inflicted those losses when the Allied take the base back. We will find another target for my invasion TF...

My subs around Johnston and Mavis from Midway spotted this TF the last two days and as I ordered KB to pop up near Palmyra to destroy the enemy DDs down there, I was pretty sure that Miller would order his TF at Johnston to steam North as he must have been aware that KB only had to move 7 hexes to be within strike range. Well, people tend to forget things and voila, KB moves full speed towards Johnston and the TF is still there... a massacre follows...

The Allied defense of Malaya was a total failure and my troops had it really easy. I guess it´s the first time that I take Singers with the shock attack crossing the river but I won´t complain. Nice, my divisions are in better shape than at the outbreak of the war and are now waiting for being shipped out to attack the next targets. Needless to say, next target will be Java. The enemy airforce is nearly destroyed there, the inf units in excellent conditions, so I don´t expect much problems during the conquest of Java. And the big bonus is that all the industry facilities at Singapore are 100% undamaged!!!!! A great day for the Empire!

There was a big DD TF.

About the cruisers, methink he has no CV TF underway, given the number of cruisers and DDs used elsewhere.  It makes sense, since with only 2 CVs (the one starting on the West Coast needs some time to come into action) it would be very risky to raid with them with KB clearly stuck on the Pacific theater. But at this date, he should have received his 4th CV, and you'll soon have to send your carriers on refit, so then would be the time to disrupt your operations.  What's your KB looking like, about sys-dmg ?  Did you lose many pilots due to ops losses in your 40 days of operations ?

EDIT: congrats for Singapore!

Here´s the situation in China. With the developments of the first 6 weeks of the war, we are facing a wonderful situation there. A couple of mistakes of the Allied commander makes it a totally desperate situation for the Chinese already. Normally I´m not a fan of going on the offensive so early with so much force as most of the troops are only around 80% combat readiness. But with abandoning two bases by the Chinese and not the appropriate movements to go in position for the defense of Southern China, the Allied commander has moved his troops into positions that are unable to hold. Better say, by not moving 300.000 men it´s now desperate.

As you can see, Changsha is totally surrounded, there is no way the enemy can break out of the town. A couple of deliberate attacks more and 80.000 Chinese troops will surrender there. I have a strong force blocking reinforcments from the North (Chungking has some 125.000 troops according to recon) and from the West, Kweiyang also has some 95.000 troops. Now what was totally surprising for me is the fact that 100.000+ troops took position in Hengchow, just to the South West of Changsha. This even though that Miller saw my TK rgts moving around pretty fast on the open terrain. This has lead to the total surrounding of those troops there also. Which means we have now some 170 - 180.000 Chinese troops trapped in Changsha and Hengchow. Both hexes are open terrain so there´s no hope the Allied troops will be able to hold those bases, no matter what fort levels they will be able to build (expect Hengchow to be level 8 or 9 when the assault starts). We have already nearly 2000 assault points sitting at Hengchow to siege the base.

Now going further South. At Wuchow, there are some 1500 Allied assault points, facing 1200 Japanese assault points sitting in a wooden hex. This means the Chinese won´t be able to do anything here. Just to the North, at Kweilin, there´s only one Chinese corps defending this base! I have a couple of divisions and TK rgts moving there, no doubt they will take the base with the first attack. Then I could even move on the road to the NW of Kweilin and block expected reinforcements coming down the road from the North. Also here, wooden hex and I doubt the enemy would be able to break through. That would mean we could have three Chinese strongholds being totally cut off from supply and a possible retreat path! Over 250.000 enemy troops in total lost then! Having three closed kettles at the same time in China is something I was never able to achieve so far. I can´t see any major troop movements from Chinese bases further away from the front so I wonder what Miller is planning. At the moment it really looks like he has written those troops off.

IMO the Chinese can sustain the loss of the troops in Changsha, it will become a major problem if the troops in Hengchow are lost also and if the troops in Wuchow are lost also, this will mean that all of China is lost. With all I mean the majority as I won´t attack Chungking anyway. Excellent developments...

first attack here and I´m pretty satisfied with the results. The enemy wasn´t able to build forts, it´s a hex with clear terrain and we outnumber the enemy combat troops 2:1. The base shouldn´t hold long and the best thing is that my troops moved from the South into Manila, so this means the enemy troops at Clark field won´t be able to retreat into Manila but to Bataan, where I will finish them off then. Don´t know what I should do with the 550 assault points at Manila then, attack or just have them starve to death... With the urban bonus and probably enough supply, those 550 assault points could pretty fast wreck two or three of my divisions...

OMG! This is the first real setback of the war (well, Midway didn´t go as planned also...). I was totally sure to take the base with this attack, getting such an adjusted av is just shocking. I could live with a 0:1 if we wouldn´t have taken such horrendous losses. Both divisions have nearly lost 10% of their combat power... Looks like those 3 understrenght Allied brigades here will become a problem...

after the 0:1 a couple of days ago with only some 2000 casualties we get a 1:1 with nearly 4000 casualties again. The Chinese were able to build up the forts by one level during the last days. I fear I will have to fly some airfield attacks but those are probably not worth it as the airfield is only a level 1 and it takes only one turn to repair it completely after a strike of 150+ bombers... I guess the Chinese supply situation isn´t great though...

I wonder how much this is going to change when AE comes out. I always hate it when the AI moves out massive supplies from Manila to other bases and leaves me with less to hold out with.

well, it´s not just the game. In reality there were two divs, one bgd, two TK rgts, couple of eng and support troops IIRC. This would make some 1200-1350 assault points involved on the Japanese side. I landed more than twice assault points wise. So I can´t really blame the ground combat system, nor the supply routine, well not even my opponent for losing the island pretty fast without doing much damage. Using the available Allied forces differently could have led to a couple of weeks more resistance but that´s it I guess.

Sweep coming from Mandalay. During the Allied bounce phase the enemy performed quite good, achieving nearly a 1:1 kill rate, after the bounce ended, the enemy fighters were just sitting ducks... still, the total plane losses today are only a 1,5:1... Miller is either reinforcing Myitkina or he is withdrawing North from Myitkina as we have spotted 5 units on the trails North of the base. I would guess he´s retreating, everything else would be suicide in the long run IMO...

great! My MSW decided to quit doing their work today and when you have a TF with escorts entering a hex with mines you happen to get this: PG xy locates and destroys a mine... PG yx locates and destroys a mine... 50 times more of the same until boooom AP hits a mine... boooom AP hits another mine... lol

The MSW did nothing the whole day... there was a patch that made minesweeping not what it was before as the MSW just stop at a certain point to do anything...

I guess the next two or three attacks should bring the unconditional surrender of the Chinese troops at Changsha... We have spotted 5 Chinese units marching from Sian to Homan today. 800+ assault points behind level 5 forts are waiting for them at Homan. Doubt that the Chinese will be able to achieve something here, but 800 assault points won´t be enough to drive them back out though if they decide to siege the base. Doesn´t matter, there is no industry so the Chinese can sit there as long as they want to do so...

I've never seen subs be so annoying as to sit in base hexes, thats pretty rough when ASW forces are rather inept.

On an almost unrelated topic, in my Me vs. AI game yesterday my minelaying at baker island paid off when the CV Yorktown ran into a mine on Feb 3 '42.

I happen to be playing Miller in a game, with myself as the Allies.

Methinks I'll take a page from this & put subs in all of his ports.  He never touched Manila in the opening turn, and I have a metric ton of un-touched subs on full sortie out of the base   Maybe I can give him a head ache in return for what he is doing to me

Nice update.  Could you tell which units are bagged in Bataan, or in Manilla ?  649 AV after a battle retreat, this must be quite a few divs & RCT.

And shouldn't you start putting some of those Sallies on naval search/ASW duty ?  It's just a wild suggestion, but if the subs really are in the same hex as a base, you should get many sightings (raising DL) and some (hopefully successful) attacks.  Or do you have a house rule against putting Army bombers on NS/ASW ?
It's a good thing you sunk so many subs in Manilla & Pearl Harbor, seeing how annoying the survivors are now.

They did not surrender at the loss of the base ?  They deserve a medal...

no idea what units exactly surrendered at Bataan but there were a lot. IIRC two dozen units surrendered including different TK, inf and eng units. In Manila are sitting two or three PA divs and support units, all in all some 500 assault points. Those units will be starved, I´m not interested in killing them off with assaults in urban terrain.

I was thinking about using a couple of Sally sentais but I´m still needing them on the front. We have no hr on it but I also don´t want to "overuse" them on ASW, so as soon as I have secured the whole SRA we will have perhaps some 150 IJA bombers spread out over the whole area flying nav search. Max 1 daitai at a base with the bases not overlapping.

I know what I always achieve with my subs already early on and I can´t understand why people argue that subs, better say the US fleet subs, are useless until mid 43. They do work just fine and I always sink a lot of ships with MK14 torps in the first year of the war. Of course you also see enough duds, but sinking 100 ships with subs is IMO definetely better than using the subs for minelaying or have them sit in port.

The Dutch troops at Macassar didn´t surrender because they could retreat North as they did have a valid supply path to a base in the North. Doesn´t matter...

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate this bug! I know that the game tends to unload troops even if you set your TFs to "do not unload". Well, I´ve checked my three TFs that are going in at least five times if they are all set to "do not unload" and they were. Nevertheless, the TF with the support troops unloaded at the wrong base...

it only unloaded during the night phase, which clearly shows that it was NOT set to "unload". When I´ve checked the TF it was still set to "do not unload". Great...

Japanese forces CAPTURE Merak base !!!

this is the base WEST of Batavia where our TFs are heading and will arrive tomorrow. A contingent of the Yokosuka 2 captured the empty base and our TFs can unload safely. Miller garrisoned nearly all coast bases on Java and while I normally like to land at Kragen (NE of Soerabaja) to cut Java in two, he moved a unit there. Java will be a cakewalk, the only downside is the bug that unloaded my support troops on the wrong island for one phase of last turn...

as you can see, I´ve ordered my two divisions to retreat back to Mandalay. Unbelievable, but they were not able to take the base at acceptable losses and the enemy is moving in more troops via the trail from the North. Well, I´m also moving in fresh units, two more divs are coming with APs from Singapore. 1600 assault points should then be enough to take the base at acceptable losses...
