as usual, the av of my troops gets halfed, that´s just how it is... everywhere... when the Allied would also need 25.000 av to overcome 2.000 of my av behind level 9 forts than they wouldn´t be able to take a single base back... But the Allied only need 4.000 av max to easily overcome 2.000 of my av behind level 9 forts, inflicting more casualties on my troops behind level 9 forts than vice versa...

it´s so fridging wrong... everything that is related to ground combat with more than 50.000 troops is just 100% BS... I have all but 3 or 4 combat engineer rgts the Japanese have on the whole map here at Irkutsk. I had 11.500 av worth of divisions that are fully prepped and fully supplied and after two failed attacks ALL my combat eng rgts are 100% wrecked and we´ve lost 6.000 av for troops disabled already. This against an enemy behind level 9 forts in an open hex with less experienced troops and only 2.500 av at start...

bigbaba wasn´t happy with his flak losses and mentioned that IJA flak seems to be quite effective as he loses 30 ac daily... well, he doesn´t really lose 30 daily but still a good number... BUT that isn´t because IJA flak is so effective that´s rather because ALL the IJA flak rgts/btns are sitting in the couple of hexes the enemy attacks... my flak is not even 10% as effective against the enemy bombers as the Allied flak is against my bombers...

bigbaba has one week off, so hopefully we get some more turns done daily, otherwise there´s not much sense going on with this campaign as it´s horrible boring at the moment. And I can´t see why this should dramatically change soon as the enemy hasn´t really a competitive CV force at the moment. At least that´s what I guess. I think if the Allied put every flight deck together (CV, CVL and CVE) they could perhaps field something like 500 ac. But the high exp crews went down with all the CVs around the Gilberts so at the moment I´m definetely of the oppinion that KB is absolutely superior to everything the Allied could send in as I´ve brought up KB´s airwings up to strenght again, disbanding lots of high experienced daitais into it.

I´m not surprised that our remaining combat eng can´t do anything. Within two attacks we had over a thousand combat eng disabled... we achieve a 1:1 though and the forts are down to 6 now. Pretty sure when we will attack the next time they will be up to 7 again. First time that we´ve caused serious casualties within the enemy. I´m still not very confident that we´ll take that base as our losses were once again catastrophic...

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

lol... lol should be all I say...

the first thought when this shock attack popped up: oh boy, does my opponent really know what he´s doing? In 1 out of 500 tries this hardly would achieve anything... until I saw the adjusted av... just... ridicoulos...

while I get adjusted avs on the offense that are just (when my troops are fully prepped and fully supplied), we´ve also hit a timeframe where the Japanese obviously just have to lose, no matter how, they have to lose. I´m not pissed because of losing (in this small area), I´m pissed as there´s just no reason for it. This is the most funny ground combat I´ve seen so far in my thousands of PBEM turns.

I´ve got 3000 av sitting in a wooden hex, they are fully prepped and also have built a fort. So what does the enemy have? On the paper, he has over 300.000 troops. On the paper he has over 600 guns. But they are also completely out of supply as they´ve been starving not just for months, but for over a year already and their av has been constantly going down which is a clear evidence that those troops were 100% out of supply. But put everything together and WE get a halfed adjusted av for a reason only god knows. Sorry, only the developers know.

Wooden hex gives you a 2x positive multiplier alone but we get our av halfed. Just laughable.

So what´s the situation now? I complained last turn it´s just boring. This has changed slightly. We lost 20% of our troops and their morale is now below 20... lol. Where can the enemy´s morale be after being starved for a year? Bigbaba either would have to be a ground combat genius or needs another couple of such lotto jackpots like he had this turn, otherwise he will achieve... nothing... he can now move either to Changsha (and get stucked) or move to Canton (and get stucked).

What will we do? We will finish off the Russian and then we will move those troops to China to finish off the Chinese ONCE AND FOR ALL. All that we will leave them will be Chungking.

period...

I really hope AE has some fixes for this sort of thing, on both sides of the ticket, attacking and defending adjustments.

Still lurking here Chris.

Bigbaba is flogging a dead horse. I put it on the critical list and he finished it off when he lost the rest of the Allied CV fleet around Makin.

Time to move onto AE (once they sort the air model out)

at least a couple of people are still reading. I´m not sure I even should continue the AAR because most people are over at the AE forum anyway.

I wanted (and to some extend still want) to get the game into the last years of the war. Don´t know if that´s possible, at least with the strange outcome of the out of supply and starving Chinese offensive there is some challenge again.

I´m closely following the AE posts, especially the combat reports and I have to say while I surely will be a fan of all the new options, I´m not convinced about the naval warfare at the moment. Same goes for the air combat. So it´s like I´ve always said, I need at least two patches to really start to get into AE, not to talk about starting a PBEM. And I haven´t even downloaded it yet. I will do that within the sale but probably won´t have a look at it as long as this PBEM is still going.

I am following your AAR, especially for your comments on combat report and stupid things which occur.
As a modder of WitP, i am always interested by all the small or big things in WitP which are incomprehensible.
And your last ground combat at Kweiyang is a good example if i can say that.

About AE, i didn't make any test concerning naval combat but about the air model combat above CV, the least i can say (after some tests published here) is that i am not convinced.
This could kill the new game, to my point of wiew.

I'm still around too, come here to read your and CFs AARs and updating my own.

About AE, I kinda like the changes, but still alot of stuff I do not know how to handle.
Love the fact that you will not get all your planes at CAP at all times (last turn I had 36-19-14-4-1 P-40s ready over Manilla as the AI started to come in in waves).
About naval combat, the only thing I've seen is my PTs vs Jap AI invasion force off PHI. The Jap had only a PB protecting its 15 or so transports. 8 transports lost to 2 PTs, both PTs sunk by the PB. But now I need to sail my PTs to Soerebaja and then to Singers to reload torps. Manilla's port is only lvl 5 and I lack some 60 pts of naval support.

lots of flak but no kills, the heavies don´t take losses flying in winter storms due to their very high durability in Nikmod. Knowing from my own experience, I tried to do a major air offensive out of the Aleutans in stock as the Allied and my bombers dropped out of the air in the dozens due to bad weather. But the durability of Allied bombers is far lower in stock so the Allied aren´t effected by weather in Nikmod at all. Only effect would be a cloud above their base which would prevent them from flying. Excellent weather or thunderstorm or blizzard, it is not reflected at all. While durability of Japanese aircraft is also higher in Nikmod compared to stock, it´s still low enough that you see massive op losses if you have your bombers in the air during bad weather.

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

one of the strange things in WITP. You may know that big inf units can build forts to level 1 (quite quickly) and to level 2 (if you´re lucky) when being in a hex outside of a friendly base. Well, small inf units or base force can build forts even to level 9 outside of a base hex. In this case, all my inf units had level 1 and 2 when they were forced to retreat yesterday and this base force had level 7 when it was forced to retreat today. So my inf units had some foxholes while the base force had concrete bunkers. One of the strange things in WITP... after sitting here for a year my inf units should have something like forts level 5 as they could dig a position that would be very hard to overcome. Not a Maginot line but at least something that is better than just a couple of foxholes... oh well...

we were forced to retreat by an enemy that doesn´t even have enough food to feed his Army, no supply for heavy weapons of which he nearly has none at all. We had hundreds of heavy guns and the out of supply troops just kicked our backside. Still no explanation for it but WITP ground combat can´t be explained anyway. In two or three turns we will see where the Chinese land death star will head to. Even out of supply with probably mostly only inf squads the multipliers in WITP are so wrong that this Army still gets adjusted avs in the thousands. Even though this "Army" would be 100% combat ineffective in real life. Just like a 300.000 POW camp that has no food or supply which is guarded by 7 fully supplied IJA divisions with heavy weapons. But the prisoners kicked the IJA´s arse... L O L

I guess with the 300+ fighters on Cap over Irkutsk there are at least two times more aircraft set to attack than the hr would allow. In fact, I´m pretty sure that every single ac is set to attack (out of the 1000+)... but I´m sick of insisting on following a hr... if I´m unlucky enough, the ongoing air attacks are the major factor that I won´t be able to take out Irkutsk...

at least a couple of people are still reading. I´m not sure I even should continue the AAR because most people are over at the AE forum anyway.

I'm still here too. I don't have too much time, so when I come I read your AAR, Cuttlefish's Small Ship, Big War, and whatever else I can - which is usually not much.

I hope you manage to reach '45.

Greetings,

glad to have you onboard, it´s good to know there are still some readers. Otherwise it wouldn´t make much sense to do an AAR anyway. Unfortunately the AAR is far from how interesting it should be, there has just not been enough action since the last defeat of the Allies near the Gilberts.

We´ve got half a month done this weekend and should get some more turns done until mid this week, then it will slow down a bit as I´m moving house but should get turns out by early next week again.

the ground combat at Irkutsk has just been a joke, to a more extreme extend it was even more insane than the fights in Australia. We had over 12.000 assault points, they were fully prepped, we had 1000 COMBAT engineers, the troops were fully supplied, it´s a clear hex and 2.500 defending Russian av was able to inflict over 100.000 casualties, 100% disable all 1000 combat engineers within two attacks and make the assault a failure. That´s ground combat in WITP. Not to forget is the fact that our troops mostly were of 99 experience while the Russian troops saw nearly no combat before...

on the other side, completely out of supply Chinese without heavy weapons kicked out our high exp and fully prepped divisions worth 3000 av from a wooden hex which should give us 6000 adjusted av just with this multiplier. It´s like I said, at this stage of the game it just seems like there´s a hardcoded negative multiplier for the Japanese in ground combat as it seems they just have to lose. I wouldn´t wonder if the 2000 remaining Russian av would kick us out from Ulan Ude as this is where we will retreat now. Due to 4 failed attacks on Irkutsk (again: there were 2.500 defending av) we have halfed our assault value. From 12.000 to 6.000. Quite ridicoulos.

example of the air war at the moment. We lose between 6 and a dozen ac daily doing training runs, the enemy loses around 20 ac attacking hexes with a more or less insane number of Japanese flak guns as I´ve massed nearly all available AA units in those hexes.

wow! We weren´t kicked out? Looking at the av of the enemy over time, the Russian are clearly starving here and it´s a mountaineous hex. Nevertheless, our adjusted av is far from what it should look like considering the fact that the mountains give you a 3 time positive multiplier.

one good example of how borked WITP is (and I´ve already mentioned this) is the fact that you can damage an airfield/port more than just 100%. It´s not just 100% destroyed, it´s destroyed destroyed, so completely destroyed... ehm, destroyed... I´ve got something like 800 engineers at this base and when I look at the base, the airfield is still 100% destroyed. During a turn, first the attack, at the end the repairs. If 800 eng can´t repair a single percent then this means the airfield was something like 150% destroyed... just crazy. And usually only hits the Japanese as the Allied most often have so many eng vehicles that it doesn´t matter if the airfield is 100%, 150% or even 200% damaged. It´s repaired within no time. Same as the fact that those eng vehicles can build a maginot line while being assaulted by 500.000 enemies within 3 days. Seen it too often that a fort goes up from 8 to 9 in just a couple of days.

One of those questions at the moment is: "where will the Chinese Army - that is out of supply - march to?". As soon as they meet some resistance I expect them to do another out of supply shock attack, still getting an adjusted av of a couple of thousand points... my recon flights tell me they are marching West on the road from Kweiyang...

the highlight of this turn... we sent dozens of barges towards Gasmata to deliver some supplies and ordered three Tony sentais to fly LRCAP to engage the expected barge busters... 10 of them were easily shot down...

the 4 penetrating hits from the 20mm Hispano did exactly NO damage so I wonder once again if this is a bug or bad design... you can sink the barges with bombs but cannon or MG fire does nothing... 20 mm Oerlikon fire from PTs is of course enough to wreck DDs en masse...

this is one of the example of the things when I´m saying the Japanese just have to suffer at this date in the war... the Pe-2 is even more crap than the IJAAF medium bombers. It carries 2000 lb of bombs (same as the Helen/Sally) but has only 5 hexes range. My troops are sitting behind level 9 forts and those crappy bombers inflict 1444 casualties this turn... 3 of such results would be the same as my 500.000 troops could inflict with a deliberate attack... insane...

some half a dozen turns ago our DinahIII at Bombay have spotted a big convoy (some 40+ ships) leaving Karachi. This was confirmed by the DinahIII that are daily reconning Karachi´s port. First I had no doubt that this convoy will head towards Australia but soon I had to find out that this TF was heading towards Ceylon. So what the heck is my opponent thinking? To some point I can understand a lot, but in this game we have left this point of understanding far behind us... This TF is reported as mainly consisting of AKs, there are also DDs and obviously also CA Sussex. But there´s only one CVE loaded up with some Corsairs and that´s all this TF can field regarding Cap. Ceylon is within strike range of several of my bases and I can move in a hundred bombers and fighters within no time. Would I really have believed that this TF was heading towards Ceylon (and it took me long to believe that such a move could come to the Allied commander´s mind) I would have had far more bombers and fighters ready.

The Helens performed exellently in this attack, putting at least a dozen bombs into Battler before the first torp has hit it´s target. Needless to say that the CVE was finished off and sank during this attack before all bombers finished their attack runs. The rest of the convoy is unharmed but Bigbaba loses another CVE for... nothing...

and I don´t get it... I just don´t get the moves of my enemy...

"ATTACKER" Class Escort Aircraft Carrier obtained inter US/UK Land Lease Agreement. The ship was under construction at Pascagoula, Mississippi by Ingalls and had bean laid down on 15th May 1941 for mercantile use as ss MORMACTERN. She was requisitioned by the US Navy on 26th Dec. 1941 for conversion as an auxiliary (AVG) to be named USS ALTAMAHA and was launched on 4th April 1942

This ship was transferred to the RN on 31st October 1942 when build was completed and and commissioned for service as HMS BATTLER, a name not previously used for an RN ship. Design changes made, based on the experience gained during build of the earlier ARCHER Class, included a larger hangar. Her propulsion machinery consisted of two steam turbines driving a single shaft as compared with Diesel engines used for previous conversions.
