AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/01/44

we enter 1944 and the Japanese Empire is in a very good position and the Allied carrier forces are wrecked... we are still on the offense with our ground forces and there isn´t a way to do a major ongoing Allied offensive at the moment IMO. The AAR started 10/27/2008 so it didn´t take us a year real life to get into 1944. Thanks to my two opponents Miller and bigbaba.

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

I´ve said it earlier and can just repeat myself. It seems to be hardcoded that the Japanese just have to lose at this date. This is either the biggest secret of Grigsby and Co as it was never mentioned or the ground combat model is the as bad as it could be. It was mentioned often enough, the ground combat model is beyond anything bad but until this game and the last two months I´ve thought it´s something I can live with. Well, at some point I´m getting just sick of it. I´ve been playing WITP for years now and was looking forward to AE as I´ve thought this would be the way to go. Many threads and lots of combat reports have convinced me that AE needs a lot more work and is far from what I would call a ready product ready for PBEM, not even against the AI (while the AI has really improved and AndyMac obviously has done a perfect job).

Well, this was a turn I did late at night and turned off the PC immedietely after watching the replay, even thinking about just deleting the game from my hard drive as it´s just too ridicoulos. Want to know the facts? Well, you can think of them anyway as it´s just the same as at Kweiyang.

Kweiyang: all my troops between 95 and 99 exp, fully supplied, fully prepped. Wooden hex. The enemy that has been starving for over a year and who is losing at least half a dozen points for ground losses daily just from starving shock attacked me out of the town because we only got an adjusted av that was just our base av. This was just plain silly and I´ve thought this can only happen once in 100.000 turns.

So it went on. The enemy moves his out of supply troops to Chungking now, an URBAN hex. What do I have there? Fully supplied and fully prepped units that should get a 4 time multiplier for defending in an urban hex. What does the enemy have? Units that have been starving for over a year more or less without any heavy weapons. How does the Allied av of thos out of supply units look like? Just perfect. What do we get for defending in an URBAN hex? An adjusted av that is LOWER than our base av. No, my troops weren´t disrupted, all was just fine. It´s either due to a 100% STUPID game design or the hardcoded secret that the Japanese just have to lose at this date. I forgot that the Wehrmacht is still fighting in Stalingrad nowadays and that being out of supply doesn´t effect ground warfare at all. Seriously, the ones that did the designs for ground combat in WITP have no clue about anything and as it is, I can understand people complaining about having continental ground warfare included in WITP at all.

It´s just plain stupid design and there´s no explanation for this. But on the other hand, 12.000 fully prepped and fully supplied av can´t overcome 2.500 Russian av, while the Russian kill off 6.000 av after 3 attacks. Plain stupid.... 250.000 out of supply Chinese troops can now take the whole continent if they are fast enough. If not, they will have died because of starvation...

this PBEM should have been stopped at least half a year ago... next stop in a year when AE might be what it could be. If not, just move on... too many hours spent in two dozen PBEMs with too many moments that make you just

most of the strike failed to locate the target, I´m in the process of moving in a whole division as reinforcment of this "mountain fortress"... more troops to come to bring up the defense in my Northern bases to what I´m expecting it to be... shortest route to Japan but surely not an easy one. We´re in the middle of winter so I wouldn´t expect anything to happen the next months anyway. But the ongoing bomber offensives made me a bit sceptical...

those naval bombardments are more or less useless... would send the BC into the Pacific. While there are surely still enough BBs around, the massacre around the Gilberts not just took a toll on the enemy CV fleet but also a couple of BBs were sunk and more were damaged... and near Karachi there´s no use at all for this battlecruiser...

not surprising that last turn´s attack on this TF triggered more bombers on nav attack this turn... I thought the TF would make it out early enough but two ships had still a very small number of troops aboard which enabled the enemy to fly more attacks today...

the Ventura´s were dropping 2000lb bombs which are far more ship killers than a Japanese aerial torp... the same goes for the 4Es, as soon as they hit decent exp, they are the ultimate ship killers with fat bombs... and that´s why I consider an Allied 4E a far bigger threat for shipping in WITP and especially in Nikmod than my Betties, which are all Frances now...

flak claims another bomber. I hope that there´s not much ammo left for the flak guns. Every day the enemy´s av is dropping due to starvation so I´m sure there isn´t that much supply left but still enough to see occasional flak burst that are enough to take down a bomber now and then...

I have ordered ALL my troops at Karachi to fall back one hex into Malir. Swamp hex and level 9 forts, if I´m lucky then I´ll get a doubled adjusted av if the enemy tries to attack. The enemy´s artillery is so strong that my units get killed off from just sitting in enemy hexes and with the magic date of 1944 that sees only hardcoded BS IJA adjusted avs it´s safer to sit in an own hex with level 9 forts I guess...

the Wellingtons are mopped up today though. Bringing in three AA rgts to reinforce the 100 AA guns at the base already paid off and bigbaba paid for it today. Wellingtons and Venturas, not the number one choice for base attacks but I´m repeating myself. Use them for navstrikes when they´ve got decent exp and you will have a better weapon than the so feared Betty. Use them for base attacks and you will lose more than you would when using 4Es only.

before sending my troops from the Irkutsk assault Army to China I wanted to finish off Iman to free the division there holding position. With the experience of China I wasn´t sure a divison in a mountaineous hex could hold it´s position against eqaul av that are out of supply...

next attack should finish those troops off, then the Army will march to China to (perhaps) take out the out of supply Chinese. Not sure about this as Gary Grigsby logic gives the out of supply Chinese uber abilities while our fully supplied troops get their avs cut in half instead of trippled...

this is what I mean... the disruption of the unit was down to 28 again this turn, nevertheless our av is once again cut to pieces... this just begins to stink at some point... must be due to the same reason that I get a 1:1 adjusted av in an urban hex instead of it multiplied by 4... it just stinks... this way, a Chinese Army that has been starving for over a year without heavy weapons can kick around a fully supplied Japanese Army... it just STINKS...

bigbaba has some 100 units at Chungking now and dozens seem to cross the river North to take back Chengtu (no problem, I would need 10.000 av to stop three dozen understrenght and undersupplied Chinese corps) while others are moving towards Sian...

lol 100 units....

all of them are completely understrenght and have been starving for over a year... doesn´t mean I will be able to stop them with my fully supplied troops that also have all their heavy weapons (something that can´t be said at all about the Chinese).

second deliberate attack at Iman and the Russian defense collapses... guess this will be one of the last big victories for us when speaking of the ground war. Especially if the Chinese out of supply Army keeps kicking our arse. Out of supply isn´t valid much longer anyway as they probably can take the whole continent and will free India with the WITP ground combat model where supply isn´t necessary... my troops will now head to China...

the enemy has lost more than 500 points for ground losses today, now at 28.128. Quite an impressing number IMO...

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

I´ve watched the bgd in this hex closely and while we got some 50 adjusted av the last turns, it now got even worse... why? only Gary Grigsby must know because the unit neither had high disruption, nor no supply (which doesn´t matter for the Chinese...) or any other reason I could identify... the unit is now down to 60% strenght...

will be interesting if the Chinese can break the defense of Chengtu with it´s level 9 forts... I guess they will, they can do all they want...

moved fighters to Onnekotan Jima and they are now leaking to Paramushiro Jima... I don´t like, better say hate leaking Cap. In this case it didn´t hit us though and I´m more than amazed that the bombers showed up unescorted as they didn´t do that the last couple of months... hmmm... they went in at 5.000ft again...

none were shot down during the replay but in the end we destroyed 19 bombers today which was quite surprising when I looked at the airlosses...

it has taken two days until we see the enemy reacting to our fighters up North. This is the hated leaking Cap but I guess bigbaba thinks I´ve based my fighters at Paramushiro Jima while I have them all at Onnekotan Jima, 60 miles to the West. This area is completely covered with our new land based Type 13 radar sets but we saw no effects during combat as we did not bounce the enemy. No, the enemy even got a short phase where he bounced us. But hey, perhaps there is a difference now, without half a dozen radar sets we would have been bounced endlessly... thank god there were only two dozen Lightnings, otherwise all of our leaking Cap would have been shot down I guess... leaking Cap

We take 3 P-38J down for 3 Tonies lost in the end, not really encouraging considering the fact that my sentais have mid 80 exp, have radar and the enemy has to fly 9 hexes and is on escort. Only very few bombers were lost...

today saw a 160 Lightning sweep to Paramashiro Jima. Lol, just like I´ve said, I guess bigbaba thinks I´ve got my fighters at this base but what he saw was the fridging leaking Cap. It´s shocking to see such a number of long range killers being up in the North... my fighters will be flown out again... one more thing has been a problem the last months. I could say that this has to do something with the hardcoded must be fact that the Allied have to win... When I set my fighters on Cap, they get damaged... not just a few, setting Cap to 70% results in 1/3 of my fighters being damaged in no time, just like in an earlier version of Nikmod when the too high durability was the reason for this. Well, until one or two months, this wasn´t true for this mod version. So I doubt it´s a problem of the mod, it seems to be hardcoded. Lol, is this a joke? Same goes for my bombers and recons on nav search, they were flying for years on 100% nav search and had only very, very few ac damaged. Now they have up to 50% of the ac damaged from flying nav search only. again, is this a joke???

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/14/44

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Chungking , at 43,32

Japanese aircraft
J2M3 Jack x 56
Ki-61 Ic x 68

Allied aircraft
P-40N Warhawk x 33
Hurricane IIc x 32

Japanese aircraft losses
J2M3 Jack: 2 destroyed, 4 damaged
Ki-61 Ic: 14 destroyed, 20 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
P-40N Warhawk: 31 destroyed
Hurricane IIc: 20 destroyed

this was a test. I wanted to test the performance of the Jack and I was quite pleased as the Jack is more or less comparable with the Tony when looking at the flight stats but has four 20mm cannons which gives it a gun value of 12 and this is a major increase in killing ability over the Tony with a gun value of 10. Will be interesting when our first fighters with 4x20mm cannon armament will meet 4E bombers. Against enemy fighters, this means at least 30-40% more succesful attacks when you otherwise only get a damaged ac, the Jack (and the George) will score a kill.

The kill ratio isn´t that good to be honest (considering the fact that we faced Chinese fighters, the British pilots should have quite a nice exp though). A 2.7:1 kill ratio against outdated Hurricanes and moderately exp Chinese Warhawks is far from what I want to see as I can already imagine how it will look like when we have to take on US fighters again. The reason for this is quite simple again: The ALLIED bounce! Every ****ing defending fighter squadron got the bounce against our leading Tony sentai, a 87! experienced sentai that was completely shot up. 12 Tonies (including pilot of course) were lost in this sentai, the enemy achieved a 6:1 kill rate during the bounce. Wonder how many working radar sets there still are at Chungking after the Chinese having starved for years. This once again clearly shows how overrated the bounce is in the game, it´s just too powerful. There came the point when the bounce ended (thank god, otherwise none of my ac would have returned) and then the enemy got completely shot up. Which again shows me how powerful the bounce is and it also shows me that the enemy wasn´t even nearly as experienced as our pilots. Let alone the fact that we had the better fighters. We achieved something like a 7:1 kill rate when the bounce ended. So the difference in this engagment was: the Allied had the bounce - they achieve a 6:1 kill rate. The Allied didn´t have the bounce anymore (we of course never got it) and then they lose 7:1.

too powerful IMO...

it was a succesful test as it showed me that if the cannon armed only fighters get a shot at the enemy they achieve far more kills than the mixed MG/cannon armanent fighters. But it was a costly test, which doesn´t make it worth it as we lost 1/3 of the high experienced pilots in one of our best Tony sentais.

Castor,

I think the damaged a/c issue up at PJ/OJ has to do with weather. These are actic zone bases and it is January. In my PBEM we are in August of 1944 and my P-47 at Adak are getting dinged up without even flying missions.

the problem is that this not only happens up North due to arctic weather, but also in the SRA, in Japan, on Makin, Truk, etc... everywhere...

still seeing occasional flak fire... but it´s not enough to really influence our training runs here. And it´s still safer to do those training runs from one hex against occasional flak fire than to do it from two hexes against an undefended target. Three bases here in one hex range of the target, one is already built up to level 7 (max), the other ones are at 4/4 and 5/4 while 200 engineers are working at both bases to max them out.

I guess we will have something like 1000+ high experineced fighters in total when the enemy will launch his next major offensive. And this will mean that we will be able to really hurt the enemy again if he choses a target of high value for me where we can employ both LBA and carriers, just like we did it in the Gilberts. And in expected five months, we will start producing the Frank (if the R&D is succesful which I expect with 400+ R&D already) and this won´t make life easier for the Allied. I´m not sure about the effect of our land based Type 13 radar sets as I haven´t seen more than one aerial engagement under friendly radar coverage so far but the one I´ve seen wasn´t impressing. We are getting hundreds of aircraft as reinforcements the next weeks and my training bases will fill up to the maximum again, while we will be able to move out dozens of daitais/sentais that have reached 80+ again. Amazing and the first time that I enter 44 with an airforce that has a higher average experience than it had at the start of the war. There´s one bug that I´ve discovered though as the Type 13 radar set has a replacement rate set in the editor of 30/month but we have produced 200 already and all our base forces are equipped with it already. This is strange so to say...

I guess it was the right choice not to engage the enemy if it wasn´t 100% necessary while concentrating everything I had when I had to. India, Northern Australia and especially the Gilberts come to mind. (while the enemy didn´t engage our invasion forces in India). The rest of the time nearly every aircraft that wasn´t in reserve somewhere near the front was doing training runs and with all the reinforcements I will get, the number of high exp daitais at the front should even go up the next couple of months. We will be ready in mid 44 and I doubt the enemy will be able to field nearly the same number of carrier based ac (not to talk about the quality) than we can in the next 6 months. Of course the hr about max number of carrier based ac per hex is helping the Allied now as I can´t put all my carriers into one hex. LOL, it has helped the Allied in the early stages of the war, it was equal near the Gilberts with more or less equal forces and is now helping the Allied again due to me having more carriers than the Allied. The hr was intended to "help" the Allied until 43 while it should help the Japanese from mid 43 on until the end of the war. If we see a carrier clash until the end of the year than we are not helpless, there are advantages for both sides. Our biggest advantage is the fact that we now have the Jill, with a torp range of 5, max range of 6. While the Zeke has a range of 6, the Judy only has a range of 5 so we probably won´t attack from further than 5 hexes if not 100% necessary. Also an advantage is the fact that we have higher exp pilots (at least at the moment). This of course doesn´t mean we should underestimate the enemy ability to hurt us hard as there are more advantages on the enemy´s side IMO. Allied sipborne flak is a killer and could/will take out lots of our bombers again. The Hellcat is superior to the Zeke and will probably achieve a 2.5:1 on Cap and perhaps a 1:1.5 or 1:2 on escort if the exp of the Hellcat pilots is high enough. The Allied ac are far more durable than ours and therefore many more ac will survive. The Helldiver is available already and IIRC it will drop 1000bl bombs at 4 hexes and this definetely is a problem for our fragile carriers. Which leads me to another big advantage of the Allied: their carriers can absorb and amazing amount of damage and if you don´t put five torps and some bombs into them you can´t be sure that they will sink. Put three or four 1000lb bombs into an IJN carrier and the chances are high to see it sink if not near a major port. It will be interesting in any case if there will ever be a carrier engagement in this campaign. The basic strategy hasn´t changed though: do not engage the enemy carriers with your carriers without having big LBA support. Even after having let 1000 land based ac loose against the Allied carriers near the Gilberts, we still lost CV Junyo (and nearly two CVEs) to an already trashed enemy carrier air arm. But trading Junyo for half a dozen Essex class carriers and some CVLs, BBs etc. was nevertheless a dream for every JFB. No matter how many epic victories we achieved so far, we should not get overconfident, I guess this is what we should bear in mind. As long as we´re cautios we will be able to achieve more than we will achieve with a hooorey style strategy.

CV Taiho has arrived and the airgroups will now be doing training runs for at least 1,5 - 2 months. CV Katsuragi will also arrive within the next two weeks. Shinano is out 9 more months and will be ready for front duty at the beginning of 45. By then, all our CVs will be completed except CVL Ibuki which I don´t care much about. Also four CVEs are still in the production queue but I don´t care about them either (they´re all crap) and as soon as I can stop them I will do that.

All in all, we´re looking at a very nice strategic situation at the moment. Even for 42 we would be in a perfect situation but we are already in 44. While I´ve always said that we can´t "win", another disaster for the Allied like they suffered near the Gilberts would give us the chance to really win! lol...

I can tell you my biggest fear at the moment though: in mid 44, some 150 B-29 will arrive each month and this means the enemy can trash everything in 24 hex range of level 6 airfields (min airfield size by hr for B-29).

at the moment we have a 1850 aircraft capacity at all our training airfields and they are filled out nearly to the max, some 1800 ac I guess. An airfield is considered a training airfield if it´s one hex away from the target. With the possibility to further increase three of the airfields we will have a max capacity of 2150 as soon as all of them will have hit the max level, but this will take at least 4 more months as I have only dedicated 2x200 engineers to build them up.

Here´s the newly arrived CV Taiho stripped off it´s airgroups that are heading to Clark field for enhanced training. CV Taiho is the best carrier at the moment and will be part of KB which I hope to see as consisting of:

CV Taiho
CV Shokaku
CV Zuikaku
CV Unryu
CV Amagi
CV Katsuragi
CV Hiryu
the four Kongo class BBs
BB Ise (converted and carrying two dozen float planes)
5 CLs (with their upgraded AA suits)
8 DDs Akizuki class

togheter around 450 carrier based ac. You may wonder why I haven´t Kaga and Akagi in KB and the reason for this is simple. The three Unryus all carry Type 13 radar sets while Kaga and Akagi don´t (nor do the other carriers in KB). I´ve also got CLs with good AA values (for Japanese terms) and radar and this enables me to include the Akizukis with their 3.9 DP guns in the TF instead of the radar equipped Yugumos. The radar equipped Yugumos will be included in "baby KB" (lol) which will be full of fleet CVs and CVLs lead by Akagi and Kaga. Having 7 CVs and 5 BBs in KB also gives me hope that if the enemy will get through my Cap (which he will for sure) then damage will hopefully be spread out between those ships. AA value of KB will be around 8000, which is a hell a lot for a Japanese TF. I guess an enemy CV TF has around 15.000 if it comes along with 5 Essex classes, one or two modern BBs and escorts.

Planto use the carriers is the same as near the Gilberts as soon as LBA has worn down the enemy. Send in KB, followed by "baby KB". The only thing that went wrong near the Gilberts was the fact that the enemy carriers attacked baby KB (that was one hex further away from the enemy than KB) instead of going after KB with a higher number of fighters on Cap. This resulted in Junyo sunk while it otherwise could have resulted in either no damage or only light damage to one or two carriers within KB.

I´m sorry guys, the game is just as boring as it has been since the Allied defeat near the Gilberts... can´t blame the Allied that there´s nothing going on and I´m not really tempted to do much more in an offensive way than the upcoming ground war against the Chinese... should I invade the West Coast???

air strike out of the Aleutians. I hovered over Attu and Kiska and Attu showed an airbalance of 3000+ . Well, I would have bet my arse off that there are not the allowed 250 ac but FAR more. So I´ve stated in my email that I´m not "happy" about it when I´m sure that bigbaba keeps deliberetely ignoring the most important hr in this PBEM: STACKING LIMITS! At least he admitted that there were far too many ac and he moved them out. He told me that half of the ac seemed to have been damaged... any reason why this should make me feel better? He didn´t care about stacking limits when he took over from Miller again and I accepted it to some degree as he had to regroup all his aircraft according to his plans. But this has been long ago and when I´m now sure that he bases something like twice the allowed ac at a front base I could really tick out. If I would be sure to find another opponent (which is hardly possible after bigbaba has thrown away all of his CVs near the Gilberts) I would tell him that if I´m just once again thinking he would ignore the stacking limits I would bail out.

Attu and Kiska are now back to "reasonable" ac numbers (according to the airbalance numbers) but there are lots of other bases where I´m 100% sure that there are probably twice (if not more) ac than allowed. Airbalance numbers aren´t telling you 100% exact ac numbers but if you get used to you can easily find out if somewhere are 200 ac or 400. At the moment I´m sure that a base some 10 hexes East of Attu received all the excess ac from Attu and Kiska and is now far above allowed numbers, same for the Fidjis and New Caledoina (Noumea for sure). So what to do now? Asking again: "could it be that you have absolutely ignored our stacking limit at Suva?" "And perhaps also at Noumea?" "And at x?" "And y?"

This is getting annoying. Either you follow hrs or you don´t. If you don´t, then don´t expect your opponent to accept it forever... Especially if he knows how to read the airbalance numbers...

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

three hexes South of Chungking, a lonely, understrenght and out of supply Chinese Corps is kicked one hex back... our adjusted av looks horrible once again, but so does the enemy´s adjusted av...

the situation in China is stable again already. The enemy seems to now dig in at Chungking and Kweiyang and not going further on the offensive... he lost the initiative anyway after being able to kick out my fully supplied troops from both towns with his out of supply units... now it´s too late, reinforcements are in position and we will soon finish the Chinese once and for all...
