another one of those odd days, simi bad weather over England, but decent over Germeny , so if raids get up, they would have clean sailing, but the trouble is, getting up

North gets a day or rest, the moon is starting to get bright, so BC is shut down

so, main effect will be in the Med

to start the day, I sent out 3 low level Sweeps, followed up by two Tac Strikes on the same fields, and then about 30 minutes after the Tac takes off, I have posted 4 Sweeps as a barrier, to try and catch the Axis as they chase the raiders home

hmmm, I may put up two more sweeps to the right hand side, the Axis could slip pass

okay, updated plots

3 more sweeps, to cover the back side and flanks

in this one, you see the rest of the plots for the general area

B-25s going after some OILS, Canes hitting a Port, part of the XVth slipping past to hit a Major BB site

the total plots for the day, to the other side, a number of AF sweeps, with the main raids being to the two ports in the North, with a Tac raid on another AF, Mossies going after the OILS I missed yesterday

when it needs to be destroyed, send in the Mossies

(really, don't waste them, you only get so many, but use them when you have to get the kill)

since questions were asked, 205 Group is hitting one of the ports in Greece, one raid from NA and one from Italy, along with some Intruders, looking for Night Fighters, that I got no idea where they are

ahhhh, my guest as to where the NFs would be based, was right, but basicly, nothing but a pactice run, bombing was poor (PFF found it dead center, of course, most of the bombers from Italy got there a hour ahead of the Pathfinder

(for what ever reason, the AI loves Kamiski AF)

2 of the first 3 sweeps were good (the big one couldn't find the target ?)

then weather kicked in, everything was delayed in taking off, timing is shot, in the end, everything took off at the same time

which means, my barrier sweeps will get to there target, before the raids will, and will break off and head home, before the raids get back to them !!!!

ahhh, the Kittyhawks come in and hammer, 7 kills and 18 damaged 109s left on the runway, with no losses( flak damage, but no losses)

the Canes also did well, the Canes get 5 kills and 8 more damaged

(so, 12 kills and 26 damaged planes before the bomb raids take off, for 1 Cane lost, and a number damaged)

the sweeps on the other coast, are so-so, 8 kills, and 8 damaged, for the loss of 4 Allied fighters

what hurts, is the Axis can take off or have already lifted off, before the raids come in, so they can attack on the way in, instead of trying to chase them down

57th FG and 79th FG of the 12th have a good day, but some B-26s slip away from there cover and get pounded

and the target screen

I need to send out some recon, the big BB site was cloud covered, and I show I didn't do much damage, but I think I did better then the bombing reports

got to say, my target picks may not seem like I got any kind of plan at all, but, the biggest hassle so far, has been weather, if I can't target what I want, I got to target what I can

plus, I have to bleed the LW before I can really hit what I want, even with Ike looking over my shoulder

hmmmm, almost a good day, think it is time to go for the knockout (well, really more like a knockdown, but who wants to bragg about about a knockdown)

the main raids, 4 major EFAC in the south, and BC (one BC raid, the hope is to hit the Area target and creep back into 2 Fuel sites)

of course, all the planning in the world, does no good, if you don't hit the target

missed two targets, did poor damage to another, only only 46% on another

(need new recon, think I did better then the reports show !)

massive losses on both sides, in fact, would have to give the turn to the Axis (don't know what happen, got up to make lunch, BC took it on the chin, NightJagd took it on the chin too though)

don't know if we have shown this

this shows units that have not flown, those that have flown a mission and those that are flying a 2nd mission (from plotting)

so white, blue and red

what the Overload area looks like, been painting it red, but still only in the low teens for Damage %, but that is because of the troops, most of the numbers for these two areas, are the troop numbers

once the VIIIth and BC get locked into the Overlord Targetting, then I would go heavy on the troop bombing

and my Aces as of the last mission

Zmeke was lost on this mission :(

seen two LW Aces pop up

on a oddity, I have seen Kurt Brandle get shot down 3 times (either lives a charmed life, or his time is running out)

my first Ace was shot down, right off the coast of Italy, but he bailed out and was picked up

for me ?

what ever I want :)

but...

still waiting on the rework of the manual

while waiting on the manual, I am trying to correct the ranges/end of the bombers (correct is not the right word, so more fine tune, would be better)

normally, you would think it would be easy, but Gary was nasty when it came to range, good thinking, to be honest, but a royal pain for me, even more so, since we changed how the game uses the fuel system

so, basicly, if I know the true range that I want to set a plane for, that is still not the range the game is going to use, so, I need to work out, when I want the extended range to kick in

so say a B-17, standard bombload was around 4000 pounds, 8 500's, but, if it needed to go deeper, it could offload some bombs, or change to a smaller size bomb, and add in more fuel, so the range with 8 500s, is not the same as the range with 4 (raids to Oil Targets, the could load up with 100 pounders)

so, what I had, worked great, but the planes carried the full bombload, way past where they should of, they wern't going to extended range soon enough, last couple of tests, they were going to extended range too soon, so getting it fine tuned

I am happy with the fighters for the most part, and the Meds looked good to me (these are going to be shorter then they "could" of been, but the AI likes to send them deep if they got the range, I don't want the AI sending them deep

in other words, I am talking in circles

Very Happy with all the work Kevin has done for us, it looks like one of the old Explots for the BoBs is shut down

now if I could just get some of the testers to start talking, I could relax a bit

FWIW, having had two uncles, 1 a Fort pilot, and 1 a Lib navigator, and from many years of reading missions reports from the Library of Congress, and the many bomb group websites on the net, often with mission logs, B-17G's carried 12x500 lb as the most common load by far, with 6x1000 lb second, and 48x100lb incendiary or 10x500 lb basically tied for third. This load was carried to Berlin, as the Fort had no problem hauling a normal load to the vast majority of targets.

The limiting factor was just that the vertical bomb bay didn't have room for more (Brits were smart to use a horizontal configuration), not that the Fort wasn't capable of lifting the same bombload of anything short of a B-29.

odd, had tried to set up a BTR44 to test run and talk about

but, I have gotten the worst weather I have ever seen, so mainly been flying hassle raids and waiting for a break in the weather

finally got one !

of course, then the Med shut down

Noticed the increase in victory points... good!
Noticed the increase in targets... I think that's good!

How is the Aug '42 to March '44 damage being handled? I'm going to guess it is randomized like the old game.

Is there a "special" reason you play with highlighted damage ON? Personal preference?

2nd of March

dang

17% over England and France, but Heavy over Germany, so only close raids today, but in the long run, my bomber boys took a pounding and are not too happy, so they needed some rest

so, time to get Ike off my back, pound some of the French targets and hope for better weather tomorrow (weather will hurt more then the enemy will)

I notice here that Brest now has a railyard icon, and the area around Paris has a few more rails, also.
Has the hidden "area targets" gone away? Meaning every area now has the rail symbol?

Hmm... additional port sysmbols around the sub pens, too!

one thing you can do, once the turn begins, is hit F2, this will then only show the plotted targets, can speed up the game if all of the icons slow you down, and still gives more info then going to the Urban view (you lose your HQs for some reason (you still got them, you just don't see them on the map)

...

I find that later in the game with lots of units, I use my HQ's -- by clicking on them -- for locating its units and airfields for moving
I've gotten to where I don't use the F2 function in TOH anymore.

But, it is a good function as you said.

one of the things the AI will do that will drive your losses up, is to get into the back path of your raid, and then pick off damaged and low on fuel aircraft, anything you can do, to break up, protect the back trail of your raids will pay off

this is a good set up, one raid is headed home, the LW is chasing and into the backpath, while a new raid in headed in

the LW on patrol, are going to jump into the attack, the LW units chasing are going to stay on the chase, the new fighters are fresh, the LW is tired and low on fuel, bad things happen, when you are low on gas

of course, the trick is to make it happen, 5 or 6 raids were sent out today, this is the only one that got the "good" set up

bad part of this kind of deal, is the newer fighters are dropping tanks and burning up gas, easly in there misson, so they are not going to hang with the bombers for long, or as long

(overall, if I am planning major raids in the area, I like to plot along the same path, but have each a little delayed behind the other, so there is always somebody new in the backpath)

This is where I think the fighter sweep is so useful! I plot a few to fly along the return path. Nothing better than long-legged Allied A/C following an Axis aircraft back to their home base! Anyone catching a big unit trying to land... you know what I mean.
