I used to, but I'm pretty sure that my ISP is filtering them now.

Virtually none is getting through, excepting stuff that I subscribe to, Newegg, Mwave, Amazon, and so on.

Erik, you're at a disadvantage in this regard because your email is public.

Oh, don't even get me started regarding the amount of spam that appears in my inbox every day and every pre-fetch filtering solution I've tried ends up eventually grabbing some unexpected important e-mail and causing me real problems.

Actually, Matrix appears to be doing a pretty good job in this regard. One of the developer forums that I visit from time to time, has it a LOT worse. In fact about two-thirds of its MEMBERS are spam generated!

Work email can be a tough deal. Away from home, I have to use Lotus Notes a lot, and the email administrator uses a proggy called Postini to filter out spam (to the tune of 500-600 messages per week). The problem with the filter is that it also quarantines legit emails from different commercial concerns. So, I still have to carefully go through my "junk-mail" folder, periodically, and I'm not a helluva lot better off than I'd be if there were NO filter at all.

Same issue with me, Grell. My regular use account on Gmail seems to do a pretty good job of filtering out the spam on it's own, but my Yahoo Mail account...every bloody day I've got 6 offers of tons of money from Burkina Faso, and, lately, several claiming I have somehow managed to win British lotteries and UN grants.

I have tried creating a filter to just block the emails I receive with the word "Viagra" in them and it wouldn't work on my Gmail account. I cannot understand why it won't filter emails containing a single word, but it won't even filter the emails with "Viagra" in the title!

Heh, If I cashed in my UN grant money I "won" I could be very very comfortably well off.

The new bacon flavoured Spam is good but could use more bacon flavour. I like the smoked flavour too. Sliced and pan fried.

Don't delete the spam you get at work. Don't open it either. Just move it to a personal folder and leave it. You'll find the spam will cease. And who ever is selling the list with your addy on it will have it removed as a dead address. Worked for me.

Actually, that may be what's happening. Once a week, I get a notification to login to a "junkmail" folder. I do so, so that I can view the flotsam and jetsom, therein. After I've recovered/restored anything of value, I exit, and Postini takes it from there. I don't know if the virtual mountain of spam is archived, or not.

After the second thing is gone, how would you remember the first ?

Seriously : I don't get it - what I mean is that spam for me is 5-10 messages each day on my hotmail account I've been using for a decade on every forum to register, every newslist to subscribe to, every sign-up, etc, and on which there's no filter that I'm aware off. In other words : you couldn't get a more public and open address if you tried. A google search on it turns up 1500 hits. Yet the spam is minimal and clicking those 10 checkboxes and hitting the <spam> button takes me about 2 seconds each day. A small price to pay to make sure no important mails are ever accidentely filtered out.

So, here's one satisfied customer of web-based mail-addresses where all the junk remains on the M$ servers and is not send through to my computer.

Greetz,

Eddy Sterckx

Hotmail has huge spam filters, and you're gettting as much as we do. Maybe they've taken away your right to peruse the spam folder, or your wishful thinking at not seing that folder is working ? ;)
e.g with Gmail, you still see the vast amounts of spam that hit every ISP and webmail providers out there.
How much you get in your inbox is in direct proportion to their filter's aggressivity.

Well, I just checked my Hotmail "Junk" folder and it's empty ... again - maybe they've maxed-out the filters for me but when I subscribe to a newsletter or order stuff from a website the confirmation mail never seems to get lost.

In other words : for all practical purposes, spam for me is an OPP - an other people's problem - and the only correct advice I can give based on my findings is : get yourself a Hotmail account - got mine a decade ago and I'm still using it daily.

Greetz,

Eddy Sterckx

Spam sends out read replies if opened and a similar tag if it is deleted, therefore the recipient is still active.
