The goal of the "How To Use" topic is to educate new players on how to use units whose roles are not obvious. You are welcome to add to any "How to Use" topic or create your own topic. A new player may think, "HAHAHAHahahahahahaha! Harharharhohohoheheeheeheee! This game has tanks and airplanes! What in the world would you do with horses?" Quite a bit, actually! First, let's look at the massive statistical advantages of horses: - They only cost 200 production per horse, whereas a truck costs 1000. They can carry 10 weight per horse, whereas a truck carries 20. Horses are therefore the most efficient way of moving artillery in the game. - They only eat 1 supply per round, whereas a truck eats 10. This is cheaper on your supplies than riflemen. In the late game, supply management becomes extremely important and you simply cannot afford to give every pair of artillery tubes a whole truck or halftrack. - The "Horse" movement type is the only movement type that is strictly better than another movement type. Horses perform similar to infantry in the swamps, hills, forests and mountains that are the bane of motor units, but are better than foot units on the plains and on roads. Now, the good stuff: how to use horses! 1. Mobilizing Artillery - Horses are simply the most efficient way to move artillery, both in production cost and in supply. Furthermore, they can get your artillery through swamps and mountains. Depending on the map, you could place your artillery in a high mountain position from which it can shell your enemies with little risk, only needing to fear airplanes. 2. With Tanks on the Road - Tanks can only carry 5 weight each, and other mobilizers cost enough such that you'd be better off building more tanks. Horses can move at a decent speed on the road. Tanks are valuable enough such that you want to cover them with as much infantry or other supporting guns as possible, and horses are the most efficient way to bring those other things along for the road. 3. In a Supply War - You can choose to spend either 10 supply per round for 20 carried weight, or only 1 supply per round for 10 carried weight by using horses. Suffice to say, if supplies are in short supply, and you need to wage a large-scale war with a long front, horses are the best choice for getting troops and guns to the battlefield. 4. Tactical HQ LANDCAP - Do you like crazy strategic maneuvers? Have you ever wanted to hide in a muddy swamp, then suddenly pop out and knife your enemy in the heart? Horses are the only way the command centers for such groups will be able to move along at a decent pace, keep the HQs reasonably close to the front without needing large quantities of Engineers, and push reinforcements to the front. Of course, you could always try to use massive quantities of trucks (or in some scenarios/mods, trains) in your home HQs to get reinforcements to your front groups, but the readiness loss is severe.
