I am still thinks on the request for the save files. Not sure I was to open that door.

We have not posted anything because nothing major has happened. Crocky has reclaimed most of the bases in NG that I had to abandon and we have both been gathering our forces. We did have the biggest air-to-air battle yet. My P38 did good.

Seppuku.......ritualistic suicide of the Japanese Samurai Class

by Robert G. Ross

This rather unpleasant form of suicide was regarded by the Samurai class as a way of saving face or honour following an instance which would bring considerable shame or dishonour upon anyone. However the Japanese rationale and justification for committing such and act change with the passage of time. In military terms it was considered honorable to commit seppuku to follow your master or overlord in death, other forms of justification or reasoning for taking of one's life was the feeling of guilt for one's inadequacy, from imprudent or reckless behaviour or indeed failing to fulfill one's duty to a superior. but this became diluted following the rise of the Tokugawa to power. This form of ritualistic suicide was known as sokotsu-shi.

Another form which sprang from rage or enmity which could not be discharged agisnt its cause was known as funshi. The warrior could also chose to kill himself out of protest or outrage at a master's unfair treatment and this was know as kanshi.

Among the classical and ritualistic suicides include those who had committed a crime and wished to atone by taking an active part in his own punishment. There were strict laws regulating this. Equally, if a warrior had caused his overlord some form of embarrassment or if the master wished to absolve his retainer (or himself) from a certain responsibility, this alone justify the commission of seppuku.

The practice of seppuku involved using a special blade to cut into the part of the body which was considered to house man's life force - the hara and source of his power. The blade would vary in specification according to the circumstances. On the battlefield the warrior would use his wakizashi.

The incision would start from the left side of his abdomen and be drawn horizontally toward the right. If his strength permitted it then it would be followed with another cut made vertically. Another variant of this would be to prolong the horizontal cut or start a new one from the middle of the first and driving the blade upwards in the direction of his throat. Originally the first horizontal cut was delivered with a long blade to sever the spinal nerve centres and the second cut complemented the first being redirected towards the aorta.

It was not always possible to ensure a quick death by such a complicated way of disemboweling and therefore warriors appointed the assistance of a second - a trusted friend - and this became a custom. The second would be perhaps a comrade, someone of equal rank etc. His job was to decapitate the warrior once he had completed the ritualistic cuts and offered his neck or at the first sign of grimace to save the honour of his friend.

As time passed and the ritual became clinical and almost sterile, the second played a very pivotal role. Often the role of the second was more resembling the executioner, and many times the second would not even wait for the first voluntary cut before carrying out his job of decapitation.....................

Or you can send all ships back to Truk. Return to Japan all non combat ships and the small stuff. Hopefully this will result in more combat ships being sent. Move all airgroups to Truk. Dig in and try to score little points with subs and sneak attacks. What units remain in Japan?

As the US doggedly moved up the Solomon Island chain, the pressure on the Japs became too much and with typical Crocky flare they struck back. While I was concentrating on bombing Rabaul and Shortland into coral chunks, Crocky was apparently assembling a huge fleet. This fleet slipped in under the weather and pounced on Lunga before I could react. Lucky for me the attack on San Cristobal was delayed on turn and allowed me to bring in a Surface Action Group consisting of 2 BBs and several CAs. As it turned out the Tennessee and the Yamato had a dueling contest and the US came out on the worst end (see combat report for details). However, the bombardment mission was turned back with only minor damage to the airfield, which has over 500 planes operating from it. Several air strikes were made scoring some hits. The weather prevented most of the planes from getting off the ground. For two days a Jab bombardment fleet sat in Lunga harbor lobbing in shells while my pilots refused to come out of their tent because of a little rain. Well, enough crying. I diverted my carrier groups from Rabaul and Shortland to intercept the retiring battle groups but only one group was able to launch a strike. This strike took out a CVL, who for some strange reason (I’ll let Crocky tell you) did not have a CAP up.

The next turn should prove decisive. Will the Japs still land? Will the fly boys come out in the rain? Can the battered US fleet face the 6 BBs sighted in the area? I have over 500 bombers in range of his strike force if only they would come out of their tents. ahaha

Check out the map at the end of this post.

20th division troops are ashore at San Cristobel and assaulting the base the navy has been forced to withdraw from the area....

The intention was that the naval bombardment grounds the many squadrons of B17 and Liberators and the ground assault would destroy them.....unfortunately all it seem I may achieve now is to wipe out several engineer and Base force units if Im lucky

Hi, Hey every group always has a few damaged aircraft.
Not as good as killing the whole group but if you capture the nice airfield you can put bombers in a nice place to kill US supply ships.

The last two turns have been very bloody. The US has come off the better and will soon drive the Japs back into the ocean. The 5th Marines are being airlifted in to do the job.

The Jap invasion of San Cristobal has been contained. US transports have entered Shortland lagoon and are preparing to unload marines in an attempt to secure this primay base. The US air campaign has ground to a halt due to lack of supplies. All the transports in the South Pacific are being used for the invasion of Shortland.

Kid,

with a shortage in AP's you are going to have to start using your DD's to run troops/supplies. Always good as a stop-gap. But I find that the Sys Damage goes up alarmingly when I use my DD's in this role for long periods of time (say a month or so). Guess that the Grunts and cases of spam must really knock around the DD's:D

I was surprised at the small number of troops defending Shortland, I would have expected 20k at least.

What DDs? This has been a very hard fought campaign. Every ship I have, except the recently arrived carrier TF, has over 20% system damage. I maybe have a total of 10 DD. I have pulled ever LR bomber I have back to the main bases to fly supplies. I will spend the next few week just trying to hold it together.

As for the Shortland Garrison. I've been bombing it for months and I don't think that many supplies were getting through. He had a lot of units on the island but they were all under strength.
Also, both Crocky and I have been attacking each other for several turns I only showed the last battle. Its a very bloody game.

Rick :)

Major Carrier action off Rabual 7/43

Allies were surprised me thinks......Results 1 CVE badly damaged CVL Princetown took 3 250kg bombs and CV Victorious got hit by a 250kg to go with the torpedo hit from I 2 earlier in the day

Unfortunately the Japanese admiral decided to withdraw before he could take advantage of the situation
