The new Admiral has gotten yesterday's turn and looked it over. I'm making notes as I make plans to improve the defensive position in the Aleutians. Brad will get tired of my multiple emails with questions and suggestions - we have 36 x AA units in Manchuria and Japan.  I don't think the Allied 4e bomber hordes will be hitting those two areas soon, so I've made a request to start puchasing them (3 per day in PP cost) after the new Armored Division arrives in Manchuria. I'm finding loose engineer rgt and construction units that will be formed together and sent to a base for a rapid build up of the base (port, AF, and forts - especially forts ). I think 2nd ACR had a post somewhere about putting about 2 x Engineer and 4 x Construction and going from base to base. Time to make the Americans bleed for every inch of real estate.

BANZAI!!

Combat Report
August 7, 1942

We are finally back on track, with a replacement for Admiral Cochrane, whose plane went missing over Attu. Until he is back, Admiral Benoit is at the helm!

Today was fairly uneventful, though we expect imminent action in the Aleutians. A large US Fleet is gathering at Kodiak, and I suspect they are bringing the cavalry for the boys stranded at Cold Bay. KB is still repairing in the Home Islands, so we temporarily do not have a CV counter; however, we have fairly strong airpower, so any attempt should be met with Betty and Kates (weather permitting of course).

Otherwise, I sent a long note to Michael on the situation, I am copying it below:

INDIA: BBs will hit Bombay day after tommorow, I intend to co-ordinate that with Ground Attack Bombing and a Deliberate Attack to see if we can knock down a fort. Malir is almost to size 4, at which point I will move bombers there to supress Karachi. As you can see, Ceylon was recently cleared.
In terms of NAVY, the Nagatos are at Mangalore, and the 4 Old BBs are also on the Indian coast. I also have alot of CLs and DDs. THAT REMINDS ME: Please take that CL out of the Bombardment TF; I think John put it there. Bad idea, there are 9.2 in CD guns at Bombay. There are spare DDs here if you need them, we really only need ASW escorts for the DDs.

Please note that BABY KB and the CVEs are near Sinagpore; we pulled them from IO to move to Aleuts. I am on the fence on that one, ultimately I don't think the RN is going to come out anytime soon, so the choices are really:
1. Stand sentry in IO. That force is probably strong enough to give a good account vs. RN CV's.
2. Send to Aleutians. No good by itself though, really a KB supplement. or....
3. Send to Banda Sea; use to support landing at Darwin, or raid Perth.

....let me know your thoughts there.

CHINA: The planes at Hanoi, if you haven't guessed it, are really the Hanoi School of Pilot Training. Most of the other units in China are as well. I like to get the IJN units up in the high-70s, and IJA similar before committing. Do you know how to pull veteran pilots out of units for replacements? I just replenished all the KB fighter units this way.

PHILLIPINES: I pulled land units a long time ago. There are some Nav Gd there building, as well as a few more keeping an eye on things. I hadn't planned on attacking anytime soon, maybe late 1942 for the points if we want to, otherwise they aren't getting any stronger, and besides, the minute we destroy them all the fragments they pulled out begin to rebuild.....

ALEUTIANS: This is your show. You have seen several units in transit. Also, look at Ominato; there are 3 fighter units there for use. Let me know if you need more up there. The remainder of the IJN is basically repairing in Japan, or elsewhere in the Pacific. I would check where John stashed all the CLs and DDs.

PACIFIC: Check it out, in general I think the Marshalls, Wake, Marcus are well-garrisoned and in good shape. The rest needs some work, but I don't forsee a threat anytime soon to be honest. We think the USN is almost entirely at Pearl/NoPac. We think only light forces at Papete, though that is likely well-garrisoned and supplies stockpiled. In Australia, we have seen hardly ANY aircraft at all, hardly any naval activity. We suspect, from prior engagements, that a RN force is in Oz, with at least BC Repulse and a couple D-class CL. More than likely, PoW is there as well. The ANZAC cruisers are mostly in Ironbottom Sound, courtesy of KB.

There are RN CV's at Aden, and certainly RN BBs. We heavily damaged 2 R-Class BB's about a month ago off the coast of India, via miss Betty. (We would have sunk them if the weather gods had been kinder). I don't think they will be back anytime soon until they have an answer for the Betty. I am counting on Bettys to keep the RN at bay and away from karachi/Bombay.

To let others in on what is going on behind the scene, here is my e-mail to Brad after doing my first turn as co-leader of Japanese forces. He will be on R&R for the three day weekend and I'm flying solo.

Economy:
1) 3 x HI in Manchuria that need more supply to repair. I can move the Command HQ and troops within the country to create a greater supply need (hopefully over 10k) to get this done. Can I start this??
2) Oil repairs - besides the need to repair Balikpapan, we need to send 40k to Brunei to get it finished.
3) Resource - I turned off repairs at Balikpapan.
4) Oil needs - Tracker showed that Indo-China (Hanoi and Saigon) have only one day left of Oil. I usually send it to Camhran Bay and allow the AI to move to both bases. I need about 1000 oil/month for the small HI at Aukland. Can we get a few small TKs to pick it up at Ambonia and move it down here.
5) Naval Shipbuilding - Tracker showed a surplus 227/day and 4801 (stockpiled). Thus, I accelerated CV Taiho from 115 to 345 points per day. Also, CVL Ibuki (40), CV Aso (73), and CV Ikoma (73) - since these three are so far out it only cost their durability (x1) to accelerate them (vs x2). Something I learned from Damian who gives me feedback twice monthly on my PBEM game vs Ken which is in mid-March 42. These changes will mean we are -189 per day, but it will take about 25 days to wipe out our surplus. Once it gets down, we can switch Taiho back to normal until Musashi is finished.
6) HI expansions (Japan) - Per Damian, we will need to get these two small HI at Matsuyuma (5) and Matsue (5) up to 20 before they produce on a consistent basis. He reported to me that some of these very small factories of various industries don't produce like they should when they are that small.

You know that I helped, along with Damian, to save John's economy vs Dan. So, I will be more active and offer more input on economic issues than John was. Let me know if you feel I'm stepping on your toes in this area. We will need to start to stockpile more of our HI output to have a surplus when the war gets into late 44 or 45.

Bombay: Can we pull out some of the Naval Infantry and have it shipped over to me as the troops from Ceylon move in?? I would suggest that the para be pulled out and rebuilt. Pull back 2 x Eng from here to Poona as the 2 x Eng are arriving to allow the Eng squads to recover.

Suggestion: Have you sent the needed AKs to Port Arthur to transport the new 1st Tank Division to India?? We have 28k in Oil at Hong Kong. Since that HI is not being used, can you get some TKs in there to move it (possibly to Indo-China)?? I saw some AKs loading Fuel/Oil in Japan. Is this really necessary?? I got into the habit of moving Oil into Japan and then transporting fuel back to Singapore area or Soerabaja on the return leg. I hate having empty AK/TK eat up fuel.

I ordered the 13 Aviation Rgt at Ichang to Shanghai to head to the Pacific since you had 2 x Aviation Rgt there. I'm going to use my back up file to make more notes and start to re-organize the eastern Pacific forces. John's low attention to some of the needed micro-management drove me crazy at times (when assisting in his PBEM vs Dan). I would just do things without telling him and allow him to enjoy the benefits.

I have pulled out some of the heavily damaged ships (over 10 system) from the major repair shipyards and sent them to unused or smaller ports to allow all the repair points to be spent on warships. I have multiple BF in or headed to the Aleutians along with a full division and brigade. Every day the Allies hold off from heading back for Cold Bay, the stronger I will have become. i was always a better chess player playing black. I like the defensive side more.

Back to making notes and getting things ready to be set in motion for the next turn.

I said this about other industries, not HI, HI produces consistently ... sorry if I confused you

These industries are in particular engines and airframes, where I try for at least 16/mth, ideally min size 30 BUT not armor, vehicles, ship building... But I also recommend that repair yards are at least 20+

As for small HI expansion, I am all for it, cause the outlay is small and IF done at multi-points it accumulates quickly.

In this mod, only a very small amount of expansion is required, and because you have captured a bit, all this helps too ...

Having HI sitting without Oil or Res, is something I never want to do.

Regards
Damian

[last edit] iirc - if I talked about inconsistent HI, I must have been talking about surplus... some turns more engines/airframes are produced and hence more HI is used. Similarly I find when reinforcement and sometimes new units arrive, HI requirements spike a bit ...

I just finished my first turn doing all of Japan after doing just one turn as John's replacement. Brad is on R&R for the three day weekend, so I'm flying solo.

I know I'm more of a micro-manager than John and I think I am a little bit more than Brad, but I'm trying to formulate my plans for the eastern Pacific. The good news is the American fleet is still at Kodiak while I fly in more of 7th Ind. Bde into Cold Bay and the fort building continues. Troops are heading in from various places and I spent about 400 PP on an eng rgt, 3 x construction, and 3 x AA from Japan. I'm trying to gather up transports to get them to Umnak to build the AF up (only 52 engineers there). The Aleutians will need another month to get the forces in place and then its just the engineers doing their thing. The first daitai of Tojo's just flew into the islands.

KB is spread out throughout Japan and Shanghai getting their system damage down while the escorts are doing the same. Thank god for Tracker to assist me in identifying the best AA & ASW DDs with endurance of 4000 or greater and where they are at. I've moved out any ships that are not part of KB and her escorts. They are going to smaller ports with smaller repair yards. I truly need another 3 weeks to be ready to sortie the fleet.

Subs - most are headed back to a shipyard as many had double digit system damage which raises their DL. Its hard enough for Japanese subs to survive.

AOs - they are headed to Japan for some R&R and to be used to follow the carriers only. They were down at Truk with a few used to carry fuel to Palmyra?!?

John Update - I spoke with him briefly as he was with Paula and the two boys at mid-day on Tuesday. He had gone home briefly after getting the judge's decision Monday night and left to go to his secondary home later that night after the boys went to bed. Somebody saw him at home and turned him in as police where at his home on Tuesday morning. He was going to turn himself in later on Tuesday or first thing Wednesday morning. He did not know how long he was going to be sentenced and I haven't heard from his wife yet to find out anything.

Under the circumstances, it could be a while.  For those so inclined, prayer for all parties involved would be appreciated I bet. I for one will miss his commentaries until he comes back ( as I assume he will ).

The game continues under Michael and myself; I would have posted sooner, but the pace is down to 1 turn a day, and not much is happening: Bombing of Bombay and Karachi every day, and a calm in the Aleutians while everyone collects their thoughts.

We did sink 3 APs at Geraldton, and I beleive they were the APs we tracked all the way from Aden (HR allows unhindered transit on the map edge). Gerarldton is now a size-3 airbase; I am anticipating this to be an axis of advance. Once they have P-38s, they will undoubtedly start bombing Exmouth, and once the airstrip is rubble, invade.

We will probably do a summary tour of the Empire defenses. In north Australia, they are very sparse; the bulk of the ground troops are in India.

Combat Summary
August 18, 1942

The last few days have been mostly uneventful. I am posting though because I do need some advice: What to do about Bombay?

India

Our last attack on Bombay on the 16th was a disaster. We started by bombarding with BBs; this caused 3300 casualties. So far so good. Poor weather grounded aircraft, but we attacked with 3400 AV, including 5 Engineering Regts., and at least 3 tank regts. The result was terrible; over 10K IJA casualties against the Allied adjusted AV of over 36,000! The Allies suffered just a few hundred. Our units are temporarily shot, and have to be withdrawn to recover.

We have limited reinforcements available; a tank Div in Korea about to be loaded up, plus a division unloading at Madras (from Ceylon). Beyond that, we have a few Nav Gd around, but no division-sized reinforcements available.

We control the air over Bombay (and Karachi), and have been bombing both every day for 2 months. I rotate the bombers to keep them fresh, most of the IJA bombers are in India keeping those bases supressed. We also have all the IJN BB's with the exception of the Kongos (and Yamato, which was sunk off Palmyra). We are getting good results from the BB bombardments.

So, what next? Any experts out there in siege warfare? I am inclined to give up, we can pin them in Bombay with much less than the AV we have there currently, freeing up troops elsewhere, but I don't want to give up easily, because if we take Bombay, we probably ensure a '43 auto-victory. On the other hand, I could use a couple divisions to finally take out the Phillipines. That might also get us there.

Bomb, bombard, use engineers.....that's the only siege formula I know. They haven't unloaded supplies there for at least 2 months, but I believe supplies there were plentiful when it began, otherwise they would not have allowed themselves to be surrounded.

Ideas?

Aleutians

There has been little action, though lots of activity in the Aleutians. For the last 7-10 days, we have observed a large fleet at Kodiak; intel reports the presence of at least 1 CV, (probably more), plus warships, and lots of transport TFs. We now have 2 Bdes at Cold Bay, and the US units are still stranded there. Michael has Umnak close to size 4, at which point getting to Cold Bay figures to be expensive for them.

I don't know what they are waiting for. Once Umnak is size-4, it will get hairy. Maybe they fear KB, because they haven't seen it in quite awhile.

We have had KB in Japan repairing and upgrading for 2 weeks now; most ships are now upgraded, and repairing the last damage. The CV airgroups are full strength. Michael has been moving fuel and supplies up there.

Elsewhere

Quiet...........we sank 3 AP at Geraldton a few days back that were unloading, and Geraldton is now size 3. I suspect they transferred base troops on that convoy from India, and will make an initial move here. Bomb Exmouth from Geraldton using 4E, then invade. They can flatten Exmouth once they get P-38s, but they don't have much Naval Support in Oz. I think a small CV force or a couple BBs could prevent a landing. Michael and I will have to keep and eye on this area, and maybe think about forming a small fleet there.

In China, we pretty much have flattened most Chinese industry. A large Chinese stack is outside Nanchang. I am organizing an attack on Homan, more likely a siege, I suspect lots of forts there.

Attached is the general strategic Map. As you can see, we have occupied alot of ground, for better or for worse. Much of it wasn't really contested.

GREEN DOTS represent surrounded Allied troops at Bombay, Karachi, Bataan, and Manila. The troops in India are apparently supplied, the ones in the PI are not.

In AUSTRALIA, we have captured the northern coast save for Darwin, including Thursday Is.

The LINE ISLANDS was certainly a reach, we don't intend to defend it vigorously, though invading Palmyra accomplished one important thing, which was to draw out USN CVs (we sank 2 there).

This could just be an oddity or a happenstance.  But, I’ll offer it up anyway.  I’ve noticed more then once that if I attack with a ENG unit and Just Armor at deliberate, for some reason they’ll knock the forts down.  where a massed attack with INF goes no where. You won’t get a lot of KIA’s on there side- nor on yours for that matter..  But, I presume your main desire know is to knock down the fort levels.

adjusted av of 36000 ?? then i'd say there's a long way to go before you're going anywhere

doing 3K casualties per bombardment, plus air & grond bombing must be denting both supplies & troops pretty heavy!
(making a run, about every 3 days thats 30K a month )

how many supply hits do you get in the proces?

is there a standard for the amount of bombers designed for airfield bombing and groundbombing?
i assume your still keeping the AF out of order, but do you still score supply hits on the destroyed AF?
if not lessening the AF bombing and increasing ground bombing might be a thing to try.
Something that might even help could be bombing the industry, if Bombay has recources/ HI then it produces supplies by itself
(assuming that making the siege shorter is more important than getting bombay to produce goods for Japan

how was the jap adjusted AV?? with plenty of rest/ support/ supply you should be getting a nice score as well
(not the really to the 36000 .. but thats what we got attrition for)
would shifting HQ's or more engeneers from Karachi make a notable difference?

IMO for as long as you are keeping India in your grasp and on the offensive hand you keep the momentum and the Chance of victory
(or just a good extra year of playing without the Allies knocking on the homelands)

As soon as you start moving into defensive positions the Allies are good to go and will start building up counter offensives, as long KB as isn't needed for the war in India there remains plenty of strength in the Pacific. Therefor i'd say; stay for as long as it takes.

Aleutians 19 August 42

The Americans continue to look out from the safety of Kodiak. As the screen shot shows, they have a few ships here. Almost daily recon shows about 80 F4F-4 Wildcats and 40 P-40E Warhawks on CAP. There are about 15 to 20 ships disbanded.

here are my disposition of forces.

Cold Bay: 21 Res Eng (recently the rest was brought in by Fast TF and Tina's), 7 Ind Bde, 12 Ind Bde, and frag of 51 Aviation (46 aviation support worth). Forts - 2 (56%). Assault Value is 411 in a mtn hex. I only have 4k worht of supply, but I will not try to use small AKs to bring in more until Umnak is built up more.

Dutch Harbor: Only a SNLF present. An AS and AV are forward deployed here.

Umnak: SNLF, Nav Gds, 3 x BF, and construction. The AF is 3(5) 22% with Aviation Support at 85. LBA is 2 daitai Zero, daitai of Kates, daitai of Tojo , and 2 chutai of Helen. Supply is over 20k. One day out is an Army HQ. A week later the 56 Division arrives and two days behind that is the 6 Aviation Rgt. Just to the east of Hokkaido is the 25 Eng, 3 x AA, and 2 x Construction. Once this final TF arrives, then I can move forward more LBA.

Adak: Nothing was here when I took over, but I have added 3 x BF and 1 Gds Mixed Bde. The AF is 1(3) 56% with a daitai of Tojo providing CAP. Plans are to build it up to level 4 or 5 as I have an Aviation Rgt trying to get to the coast from Ichang for transport here.

Amchitka: CD, Nav Gd, BF, and another frag of 51 Aviation (94 aviation support), and recently arrived Air HQ. AF is 4(4) 47% with supplies over 20k. This is my main LBA presence with 2 x daitai of Zero (plus a chutai) and 4 x daitai of Betty. It is exactly 11 hexes to Cold Bay.

Attu: Naval HQ, construction, BF, CD, and main part of 51 Aviation Rgt (116 aviation support). The naval forces operate from here. An AD, MLE, and AR will be here when the 56 Division arrives before moving forward with the fast MLs. I will move the ML and MLE up to Dutch Harbor and get to work laying mines at Cold Bay.

The Japanese CVs and the rest of KB and Company are in Japan and Shanghai port getting upgrades done and system damage down. Only one CV is abve 5, but she still needs her upgrade. By 1 Sept, the Fleet and the Aleutians should be in pretty good shape.

Nice summary by Michael, like I said not much action in the Aleutians, but plenty of activity.

For the most part in 8/42, time is on the Allies's side. But up there, time right now is on our side. They probably don't know Michaels preparations, but if they did, for sure they would be moving now. I can't imagine what they are waiting for, unless it's a convoy of infantry. Let's cross our fingers and hope they wait another 2 weeks. I think they'll move soon, but I have been saying this now for at least a week.

Once KB is repaired, supplying Cold Bay will be impossible without horrific losses. They will be in a race, knowing that if supplies don't get unloaded there by Halloween, those troops will likely freeze to death.

But as Michael said in his post, looking at the Intel.....that's pretty much the USN right there, and they aren't making much of an attempt to hide it.

Line Islands Plus 19 August 42

Christmas Island: 2 x BF with the second just unloaded and supplies needed to finish up. Their is part of a SNLF on three dot bases (two in the screen shot and a third still on Baker) which will be moved up to this base. AF is 0(2) 71% with plans to expand to size 4 and move a daitai of Betty down from the Aleutians to cover the space between here and the Panama shipping channel western map edge.

Palmrya: 11 Ind Bde, 13 Ind Bde, construction, and frag of 10 Aviation Rgt (46 aviation support worth) for the daitai of Zero and chutai of Emily. AF is 4(1), Port 3(2), and Forts 2 - 25% with over 23k supply. Both infantry are half strength with many of those still disabled. They will sit here and recover while the engineers continue to dig in.

Canton: 24 Air HQ, 5 Ind Bde, 22 Eng, 10 Aviation Rgt (main unit with 184 aviation support) for chutai of Zero. AF is 3(2), Port 3(2), and Forts 3 - 26%. I have 4 damaged ships from the "Battle of Palmrya."

Plans: Continue to build up my forts without sending more troops forward. I "might" pull back an Bde from Palmyra to Canton as the Line Islands are nothing but a large speed bump for the Allies.

South Pacific 19 August 42

Pago Pago: 11 Air HQ, 2 x construction, 4 BF (120 aviation support), 2 x SNLF with Assault Strength of 225. The base is AF 4(2), Port 3(2), and Fort 5 - 59%. My LBA is a daitai of Betty doing mainly naval search missions.

Upolu: Nav Gd, construction, and BF with Assault Strength of 136. The base is AF 3(3), Port 1(1), and Fort 3 - 77%.

Savaii: 24 Aviation (140 aviation support), CD, Nav Gd, BF with Assault Strength of 179. The base is AF 4(3), Port 1(2) - 95%, Fort 2 - 10%.

Wallis Island: NLF and 2 x BF with Assault Strength of 87. All these LCUs are on Nukufetau and are awaiting transport and supplies.

Tongarapu: Nav Gd and 2 x BF with Assault Strength of 174. The base is AF 2(4) - 40%, Port 1(2) - 84%, and Fort 1 -48%. My LBA is a chutai of Emily.

Suva: South Sea Det and 28 Special BF (90 aviation support) with Assault Strength of 166. The base is AF 4(3) - 39%, Port 3(2) - 64%, and Forts 1 - 7%. There are over 20 ships in port with some ML which are awaiting an MLE to arrive.

Nandi: 1 x BF. The base is AF 3(3), Port 1(1), and Forts 1-68%.

Plans: As can be clearly seen, I don't have much here, but the fear of KB appearing out of the morning mist. I am moving 2 x Eng from South Island in NZ (its winter down there!) to Aukland and after R&R will be loaded with 3 x construction to head for Tongarapu as my mobile engineer group. A sincere thank you to 2nd ACR for this suggestion in a post somewhere a while back. LBA will be headed this way as the Tojo and Tony are upgraded from Nates and Oscars.

Wow, looks like an autovictory on 1 Jan 1943 is within your reach especially if you kill more of the Allied fleet in the Gulf of Alaska. Just a note, if I were your opponents, I think I would move south towards NZ first. It is at the end of your supply lines and therefore most vunerable. Of course "vulnerable" is a relative term here

No thanks needed really......was just stating what I do.......I use 2-3 engineer regiments or 1 engineer reg with 2-3 const bn's or 4-6 const bn. All move around base to base. I try and keep enough transports to lift 1-2 of each type (6000 worth of AP's for the eng reg and 44,000 worth of AK's for the bn's) so I can rapidly shift them from base to base.

I notice alot of bases have 2 base forces listed.......I think this is a waste. Keep 1 base force (full strength) per base........that will support 30 a/c........have a central (within air transport range of surrounding bases) with a single large base force (90 AS points) and place an aviation reg there too. This allows you to have an immediate air threat with the 30 AS based but the ability to airlift a chunk of the aviation reg where needed to boost AS points as needed. I try and create a primary base within Tabby range of bases (large lift capability) surrounding bases get a single naval guard force (100AV) to prevent fast transport easy capture but my primary base will have a large rapid deployment force (at least 300AV) that can be rapidly air lifted into the threatened base.

I will max out forts unless a HR prevents that. 3-400 AV behind level 9 forts on an atoll can butcher an invasion force. Even my "tripwire/speedbump bases" get built up to max forts. I will also place coastal gun regiments there to pound invasion forces and then begin airlifting fragments of the gun regiments the moment the invasion is ashore so I can rebuild the reg.

Overall, you guys are doing fine.......India is looking rough though.......just keep doing round robin bombardments.

Received this note from John's wife:

Sorry it has taken me some time to get back to you. Life is very upside down right now. We did revoke. John spent two days as real husband and father and is now living in a concrete box. We are awaiting sentencing at the end of the month. He has given me instructions on what/how to post on his forum once we get the final ruling. You are more than welcome to post anything if you wish. If you would like to write him (the old-fashioned way) and keep him up on the WITP, I am sure he would appreciate it.

Thank you for all the thoughts and concern.
