FOX, JOHN R.

Citation: For extraordinary heroism against an armed enemy in the vicinity of Sommocolonia, Italy on 26 December 1944, while serving as a member of Cannon Company, 366th Infantry Regiment, 92d Infantry Division. During the preceding few weeks, Lieutenant Fox served with the 598th Field Artillery Battalion as a forward observer. On Christmas night, enemy soldiers gradually infiltrated the town of Sommocolonia in civilian clothes, and by early morning the town was largely in hostile hands. Commencing with a heavy barrage of enemy artillery at 0400 hours on 26 December 1944, an organized attack by uniformed German units began. Being greatly outnumbered, most of the United States Infantry forces were forced to withdraw from the town, but Lieutenant Fox and some other members of his observer party voluntarily remained on the second floor of a house to direct defensive artillery fire. At 0800 hours, Lieutenant Fox reported that the Germans were in the streets and attacking in strength. He then called for defensive artillery fire to slow the enemy advance. As the Germans continued to press the attack towards the area that Lieutenant Fox occupied, he adjusted the artillery fire closer to his position. Finally he was warned that the next adjustment would bring the deadly artillery right on top of his position. After acknowledging the danger, Lieutenant Fox insisted that the last adjustment be fired as this was the only way to defeat the attacking soldiers. Later, when a counterattack retook the position from the Germans, Lieutenant Fox's body was found with the bodies of approximately 100 German soldiers. Lieutenant Fox's gallant and courageous actions, at the supreme sacrifice of his own life, contributed greatly to delaying the enemy advance until other infantry and artillery units could reorganize to repel the attack. His extraordinary valorous actions were in keeping with the most cherished traditions of military service, and reflect the utmost credit on him, his unit, and the United States Army.

ROBINSON, JAMES E., JR.

Rank and organization: First Lieutenant, U.S. Army, Battery A, 861st Field Artillery Battalion, 63d Infantry Division. Place and date: Near Untergriesheim, Germany, 6 April 1945. Entered service at: Waco, Tex. Birth: Toledo, Ohio. G.O. No.: 117, 11 December 1945. Citation: He was a field artillery forward observer attached to Company A, 253d Infantry, near Untergriesheim, Germany, on 6 April 1945. Eight hours of desperate fighting over open terrain swept by German machinegun, mortar, and small-arms fire had decimated Company A, robbing it of its commanding officer and most of its key enlisted personnel when 1st Lt. Robinson rallied the 23 remaining uninjured riflemen and a few walking wounded, and, while carrying his heavy radio for communication with American batteries, led them through intense fire in a charge against the objective. Ten German infantrymen in foxholes threatened to stop the assault, but the gallant leader killed them all at point-blank range with rifle and pistol fire and then pressed on with his men to sweep the area of all resistance. Soon afterward he was ordered to seize the defended town of Kressbach. He went to each of the 19 exhausted survivors with cheering words, instilling in them courage and fortitude, before leading the little band forward once more. In the advance he was seriously wounded in the throat by a shell fragment, but, despite great pain and loss of blood, he refused medical attention and continued the attack, directing supporting artillery fire even though he was mortally wounded. Only after the town had been taken and he could no longer speak did he leave the command he had inspired in victory and walk nearly 2 miles to an aid station where he died from his wound. By his intrepid leadership 1st Lt. Robinson was directly responsible for Company A's accomplishing its mission against tremendous odds.

Barker:

I acknowledge the bravery and sacrifice of the two referenced solders... but what does that have to do with the subject of this thread - "Artillery spotting change idea?"

Most observers from what I have read and understand were attached to line units

By the way these gentlemen were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, amazing how an integral part someone can be such as an FO can be instrumental to the outcome of an event

And that capability is already modeled into CS since line units are able to call in artillery fire?

Barker - you keep "kicking the tires" here... why don't you just come out and make your point(s)...

Gents:

Time to "dust off" an earlier post I made on this thread... since few players who keep introducing new CS rules seem willing to discuss?

Looks like we are heading down another slippery slope with this "new" old idea concerning artillery spotting?

As I understand this proposal:

* Introducing additional units (FO's) will break all existing scenarios.
* All existing scenarios would need to be updated (that would be hundreds)
* There would need to be different versions of scenarios - for players who wanted to use FO's and those who did not.
* How many FO's to assign per nationality?
* Kill off all (or even some of the enemy FO's), your artillery does not fire (or is not available in some sector) - unbalancing scenarios that were never designed with FO's

Several posts in this thread from a former artillery officer and CS player, are warning developers to not implement these proposed artillery spotting rule changes from both a "realism" and "playability" perspective.

Again, why break the game engine to accomodate the next "kool" idea?

There must be higher priority CS development issues then "tinkering around" with the artillery rules that currently work - especially with the abstracted artillery treatment found in CS?

It has stood the test of time?
