After playing a number of random scenarios to get the hang of the game (if you are new, keep playing until you wipe out the AI, it is good practice).

This reminds me of my second board game Africa Korps by Avalon Hill (Blitzkrieg was the first) before the days of computer games (I think the first computer wargame was Tigers in the Snow). However this Africa scenario is much better and captures well the ebb and flow of the Africa Campaign.I almost had dierrhea when my German units were mostly dwindled to 2-5 action points, and massive replacements arrived just in time. Actually this helped for the following reason.

I had reached a line approximately halfway between Tobruk and the next city when the Allies broke through in the South. So I had to retreat everywhere to avoid annihilation in the lower half of the map. The AI of course reacted by forging forward and did manage to get on of my HQs. However the German and Italian replacements allowed me to stabilize my line, and do do a southward encirclement maneuver with my renovated Panzers from the North of the map.I managed to destroy most enemy units in the pocket.

So at this point, I am well past Tobruk and on the offensive. The visible Allied units are weak and unless they have massive reinforcements coming soon, the British might be in big trouble. OTOH, more fighting will eventually attrit my units to nothing once more, and as the front width shrinks, encirclements will become more difficult.

I havent checked out the replacement list, so I have no idea if I have broken the Allied back or not.

When I played AK as the Nazis, with the help of the Rommel unit I was able to surround the big 4-5 unit of the Brits stuck out too far forward. This the litttle creepy armord cars, etc. running for their l ives!! Great fun to see the Allied player try to recover from this. The first real person I sprung this on was a Dpctpr who lived next door. He quit on the spot!! LOL t

Shortly after the encirclement, the British started to retreat to the Al Alamein bottleneck. I had no trouble breaking through to Alexandria and winning the game. So it appears that they had just lost too many units during the encirclement and other skirmishes.

I didnt see much of the RAF during the campaign, and my air attacks were really deadly. The British would bring in a strong unit and I wold pulverize it with my air force, then mop the floor with it with my ground units. I don't remember if historically the Germans had control of the air.

Anyway the scenario was great fun. It would probably be a lot mmore difficult against a human.

Hmmmm... as fate would have it.... I just posted a separate post (re AT and TOAW) without having seen this one and talked about Africa Korps and AT's North Africa scenario and.... yeah, I played this one out (just the start) a couple of times and looks like it could be a lot of fun.

In TOAW, there is a North Africa scenario that starts right when the war broke out, and I played this one as the Italians and the problem is the British AI gets itself over extended and you can cut the units off from supply and wipe them out. I posted this in the TOAW forums and another player responded saying he had had the same experience. But, there is different AI that you can set for the computer and I proposed using the alternate AI to get the British computer to play more effectively and.... I changed the scenario to the alternative AI but.... yeah, haven't had the time to test it <g>.
