I wish the USS Texas here had the same areas open to see, although for her age she is in good shape and they are talking of an overhaul for her. Next time I make it there I will post some pictures. Thank you for these, they are very impressive.

I just got back from there as well - about three weeks ago.
Here's another one for scale...
That little figure down there in the lower left is a man, about 6' tall...

And, Just for Drill... This picture is of the hatchway they cut (Lord alone know how long it took!) into the barbette on what is the 2nd Deck...I believe, just under the armor deck. The guy in the picture is my winger, with whom I have visited about 14 ships (some more than once) in the past 35 years... His arm is a little more than a cubit long.. so you can see what they had for armor in the barbettes.

This is an interesting read. Makes me want to start planning a vacatiion to some of these sites. I realized that I have actually been to see more ships that I first remembered, often because I am in certain towns for business and made time over the years to run by and see ship/plane museums. Maybe we could  eventually have a permanent thread with a listing of such places, and/or of forum members pictures.

As a point of reference the earlier photo, of the 20mm Magazines hanging on the wall, was shot in the passageway behind the battery near the center of the below photo.

She's riding very high in the water. I wonder how stable she is.

I believe she is resting on a sandbar or something similar. There are pictures on the web taken after hurricane Katrina that shows her with a slight list, which was due to the winds and storm surge tilting her on her port side in the mud.

Actually, here it is

I think they have ocassional "hard hat" tours where they take people into areas that are not ordinarily open to the public. You need to be in fairly good shape, and expect to get dirty.

I haven't been to USS Texas in over 30 years, but back then you could get into the engineering spaces. I remember the triple expansion engines. I'm not at all claustrophobic, but I decided I would not like to be down there when someone was shooting at the ship.
