Hi All - EXCEPT RUPD

Well firstly an intro - I am a newbie playing as Japan against a pro RUPD. This is my first ever PBEM and AAR. The reason I am starting an AAR is that I need some help. I must go on the record and say Tom is a first rate guy and is a pleasure to play against. I will try my best not to moan to much in this AAR but playing as Japan is so frustrating at times. We haven't got many house rules except 4Es can't go below 10k. We are playing 2 day turns which is hard for the Jap player some times but I like it as it make the game go fast.

History - Well I attacked Manila on day one and things went quite well for a few months. I took Manila and Singapore in short order and expanded to Myitkina. In the south I expanded historically - Java and Timor. I have taken Port Moresby and Thursday Island. In the east I took Wake and Baker island. For a something embarrassing I did a half pie attack on India and lost a lot of ships including 1CV and many others are still in the yards being repaired. I still hold Sri Lanka with about 1.5k AV

The date now is 19/9/42 and I am on the defensive big time. Tom has retaken Baker, Wake and all of the Marshalls except Kwajalein and Eniwetok, in the east and Timor in the south. This turn he has just landed at Tassafaronga and will slowly work his way up the island chain.

What I have done well is taken all of China - the Allies are hold up in Chungking of course with 67 units but they are surrounded and we have agreed to hold there.

I will post some screen shots shortly but what I am after is advice on what to do and of course some support. I have 6-7k AV spare now in Chineses units.

It will be a basic combat reply format with comments.

the airplanes sound like either a missing air HQ, or some fatique (for which HQ's are usefull as well),

clueless about the 8 K mines, he brought some DMS (TF 1030), but with 8K even those couldn't have cleared all of that

a pity the betties didn't  get some of that bombardment TF

Here is the production screen. My research seems to be going very slowly. I have plenty of fuel and not many supplies.

I had a fighter sweep setup to attack this hex and they didn't over two days. They would have help clear the way. This is a strange combat report as he would have had more aircraft in the air than that. He likes to set his cap very high I would say 80% as very few fighters have ever accompained his strikes. A fact I hope to take advantage of at some stage.

Allies very lucky that 18 high experienced Betties 75+ exp couldn't hit anything

What I would like to do is plan for an invasion of Russia, using the combined CEF and Kwantung forces and a lot of SAA force as well. I should have 16 to 18K AV. It is a bit late now as winter is very close and I am still moving the troops into position. In Spring I wish to attack. Although I am not sure the exact months winter is. This is where ideas and suggestions are welcome.

I will post further screen shots tomorrow.

Gordo - IMO you are lucky to have researched that many Franks as you are almost 2 years away from their introduction... It is harder to research planes that are further out.

Your questions are not specific about the production side to really allow me to talk you through what is happening, but suffice to say each factory that is repairing will cost 1000 supply - so if you are low on supplies you may need to rethink what you are repairing.

Tools such as witptracker and decoder can help you with the economy (I'm part of the dynamic duo who made tracker - so I prefer that!)

Give me some clarity of figures and what you are trying to achieve and then I'm willing to give you a hand..

[edit] having looked at the figures above about your industry - I will say it looks like you are doing well anyway... surplus in everything, vehicles look a little low, but this depends on the mod and you should think of expanding the ship repair facilities - but otherwise good. Many players don't like to expand HI - I do (but it your choice as to the supplies you want to expend to do this. And in your game you are doing well anyway.)

Thanks n01487477 - and yes I have expanded the repair yards a bit already Tokyo is 240 and Singapore is 100

This turn was a bit sad as the Allies once agian massed their Carriers at Tassafaronga and my aircraft died on the cap. It is ok as I am slowly wearing them down. And I have hundereds of Zeros in reserve.

Gordon - some pointers before I get into the air production screens... (and I have to go out for dinner in 10 mins ... so quickly)

At present your HI is using less than the resources and Oil you are producing, which is a good thing.
However to get over some problems that I can foresee ...

1. You might think of turning of repairs to your resource centres as you need not repair these. The same could be said for the Oil centres (but there might be some here you wish to keep repairing - I'm talking about the bases which are vulnerable to attack in the near term)
2. You have not been moving your resources and Oil around as efficiently as you need to ... You really need to start hording these in Japan for a time when SS's are doing added damage and the Allies are on the offensive. Also I notice that at many HI centres you getting close to running out of Oil / Res. (see attached)
3. You have supplies sitting in Manchuria and on some Japanese Islands and other locations you may wish to bring back to the Home Is.... and this will bring me to the air production which I will get into shortly...

I have more to say here and will come back in an hour or two and give you some more pointers ... sorry girlfriend needs a beer after a hard day at it ...

Let's talk about your production choices and eventually engines ...

I'm guessing you are playing the game with PDU on. This allows you to choose your planes and not stay within the "historical" build.

So you need to think long term about what you want and how much you will need. The first thing I would do is look at the aircraft comparison screen (not shown here) and determine what planes you think you would like to invest in. What is going to be a good point defense fighter and which you might use for sweeps or escort duty.

Having decided that then come to the production screen as shown and look at the factory upgrades. As you might well know factories upgrade along the path taken by "historical/scenario defined" plane upgrades.

So clicking the factory upgrade shows what the factories will upgrade to... so the A6M2 ->M3a ->M5 & the M3 -> M5, so you have 2 paths going to the M5. Let us think of the numbers of factories which will upgrade here...

Now let me say at the offset that Tracker needs a tweak here as I neglected to think about Not Building (next release fix)... let me continue, the green box 139 M2 factories are shown in the last column of the M3a (but it should be 139 + 158(not building too)...and this will move onto the M5 eventually when it is available. As will the 72 M3 factories to join the 73(47) M5's you are already producing... giving you a total of 489 M5 factories...

Now that is all fine and dandy if you wish to produce this amount of M5's but I think there are better alternatives here if you have PDU on. And I believe you are duplicating production...

The choice to research a planes before its availability comes down to do you want to roll the dice and hope to get the plane early(haphazard at best) or are you gearing up early to get max output when it arrives. This is your choice, but having said that supplies are dwindling, it might be prudent to turn off some of the factories repairing more than 12 months out (determined by your desire to get them early - remember you need 100 to get a dice roll)... Actually I am really surprised you have built as much as you have with some of the models in '44. Someone tested this a while ago ... more than a year out models take longer to repair and larger factories are better at repair here.

Let's look at the second screen (once again just looking a fighters)

TBO (Total Build Out) - these are the number of planes of this model that are needed to fill your groups which will arrive in the future. So the A6M2 has another 102 planes to fill these groups, 86 planes are needed to cover reinforcements for units on map and the next group will be available in 49 days....

So firstly as you have a good pool of M2's, get those groups at full strength and if you are low on pilots, assign some as training groups and add pilots once your pool shows 0. And read about the methods of training, withdrawing and disbanding... I actually use the method of continuous training with no disbanding or withdrawing but upgrade downgrade combining.

Now let's go back to the M5 - there is a huge TBO of 1071, with the first group arriving in more than a year - of course you need to think about those existing planes
which need to be upgraded too... If you are using PDU - do you really want all these planes to be M5's or would you convert them to something else ? Could you just have a small pool of M5's after equipping the planes you want on CV's (and there might be better alternatives here), to bring in the new reinforcements and then just upgrade them to another model ... these are your choices my friend ...

Engines - all looks good here or does it ?

1. No Aichi Engine factories ... ok it is a year away, but you need to decide which of your other engines you will convert sometime... I suggest one of the small ones. Also while 75 is the TBO, you will need to replace all the divebombers on your CV's etc...
2. You need to look at the planes you will be producing and determine the factory use... the Pl Fcty use + R&D (planes*engines) = Pot. Engine Use. So taking the Mitsub 1498 is the total plane fact usage (if all factories you have are building), whereas you are building 985 ... now the caveat here is that not all factories will be producing at the same time, and some will convert to others - so this is where you need to do some mental arithmetic.

But having said all this, honestly - your engine build looks solid, money in the bank as some say is to horde engines for the future.

Hope some of this is useful ... I usually look at each engine and then determine what is needed and plan for the future ... future Tracker builds might have this mapped in a better way to help ppl do the mind map over time ...

Hey Damian

Many thanks for that guidance, very awesome. Regarding the resources, what I do is collect from the main bases around the SRA and drop them all at Singapore then have one huge convoy going from Singapore to Osaka. Not sure if this is the most efficient way but seems to work ok.

RE: aircraft production, what do you mean duplicating production? Tell me with research is the 100 level reached accross all factories of that model or is it at one factory with 100 or more? I take your point about Zeros I think I will convert one factory to Jacks.

Thanks again

Hey Damian

Many thanks for that guidance, very awesome. Regarding the resources, what I do is collect from the main bases around the SRA and drop them all at Singapore then have one huge convoy going from Singapore to Osaka. Not sure if this is the most efficient way but seems to work ok.

Many ppl use this method - I guess my point is that you might want to increase the number of AK's bringing Res/Oil here as you are already in late '42 and you should really be hording more in the Home Islands, IMO there is too much surplus of these scattered. '43 will start getting more difficult, '44 hard to move res/oil and to plan ahead now is best.
quote:

RE: aircraft production, what do you mean duplicating production?

Just the simple fact that due to upgrade paths you are researching planes that will get other factories once they upgrade - I got the sense that you thought of straight totals rather than accumulative totals of what you were going to produce ... guess the zero example is what I mean.

quote:

Tell me with research is the 100 level reached across all factories of that model or is it at one factory with 100 or more? I take your point about Zeros I think I will convert one factory to Jacks.

Thanks again

From the manual:
Aircraft not yet available with a production capacity will cause research and may move up the availability of the new aircraft type. Whenever a plane would have been produced, 1 development point is gained by the new aircraft type. For every 100 development points the availability of the aircraft type will be moved up one month.(this last point I(and others) dispute "will" for randomly might).

Attack on Russia Planning

Advice please on possible routes for my main thrust.

See the possible routes I am thinking. I like an armoured thrust through Mongolia then north to cut the railway then possibly back towards Vladivostock. With two other infantry thrusts near Vladivostock and the other near Khabravrosk

I wonder if I am wasting my time bombing his troops at Tassafaronga. He has 27 units there and must be 100k troops. It is only a size 1 port and the spoilage must be huge to supply all of these units.

Ship Losses to date
Japan/Allies

CL 6/10

APD 2/1

AP 121/5

As you can see I need all the help I can get. Tom is playing very cautiously but in some ways very agressively. He brings everything to take a base. And I can't stop it as half of KB is still in the yards and he puts lots of fighters on his CV's and uses them as a big 'Cap Death Star'. Then once he takes a base suddenly a whole bunch of PT's appear.

Enjoying it though

I don't like to moan but overall I lost 169 aircraft only 20ish in the air and Tom lost in the air 5:1. But I got killed on the ground. 2 Problems with this, the way the game works the Allies get to see the Jap moves and plan accordingly. And only ever half max of the fighters fly CAP.

The way it works is Jap moves only seeing the last turn, then the Allies seeing where the Jap moves base their moves on that info, then the turn is run. The way it should work is BOTH move simultanously only seeing the last turn position then the turn is run. The Allied air power in this game is overpowering and doesn't need any extra advantage. Especially when you consider the Jap AA doesn't work and the only way to cause damage is with A2A

The only good thing is I didn't lose many pilots, however, now that the airfields closed and there is no aircraft to fly them out they are trapped.

Not so much a joke - actually pretty much replicates what the Japanese had to endure during the war... Allied SigInt could and did accurately predict not only where but WHEN the Japanese were transferring planes into a new base... the Allies would then time their raids so that they would hit just after the Japanese air unit would land... the CAP couldn't even fly... (see The Emperor's Codes if you are interested).

Anyway, it turns out that it really isn't so much a game artifact as a replication of what went on in the course of actual events.

Thanks rtrapasso I stand corrected. It is always good to know the reasons for things. Unfortunitely it doesn't help me stop his bombers. Although.....I am thinking of a cunning plan. Lets see if I know, he knows my moves then I can plan accordingly and set traps etc.

Watch this space
