When Fog of War is off, I obviously see every enemy TF, but without any recon even the KB may be displayed as "1 AK" or something like that. And I see every enemy SS.
Right?

But does the AI gain the same advantage? It seems like it does, because it strictly avoids hexes where I placed my Subs and I mostly only hit with my Subs, when I moved them to a new hex or if the hex is inavoidable for the enemy TF to reach a goal.

Furthermore I find recon and detection levels rather bad displayed. Even spotted the 100th times, an enemy TF will never displayed with what it really contains. Therefore, the KB will sometimes be shown as "CV CV BB BB" or as "DD DD DD DD DD DD" and so on. Am I missing something, or is it just this way?

Have only played with fog of war off, as I'm just playing my first campaign as Allies and still learning a lot about this game. :)

If you could explain the real difference between FoW off an on, I would be glad.

Hi Sarganto,

I have only played with FoW on.  In that mode I cannot see what the other side is doing unless my own units are in a position to spot the enemy.  (There appear to be exceptions.  I think we always get an indicator that an airfield has planes even if no one is available to "spot" the airfield.")  Task force composition is uncertain.  I can be sure something is in the hex, but I cannot be sure if the number of vessels is correct or if the reported types are correct.

Even when the FOW is off, there is uncertainty in the sighting reports.  At great distance, you may only get one ship out of a TF spotted and you never get more than about 10 ships in a sighting report.  If the TF has more than 10 ships, then the computer lets you miss some.  Also, there is an element of randomization so cruisers become a battleship or battleships a cruiser, or the carrier that sank last turn still gets "spotted".  When it comes to ports, you get a sample of what's in the port so if there are some warships salted among a 100 AK's, the spotting report will amost certainly just give you a bunch of AK's.  When you do a recon by fire by launching a Port Attack, then the planes will (largely) ignore the trivial targets and go after the most valuable ships in the harbor.

When FOW is on, then you'll only see what you actually spot with aerial recon, coast watchers, your subs, sig-int, GI's diving into slit trenches when the 15" shells arc in from the sea, etc.

And, of course, you don't see every SS.  They have to be spoted as well.  That's why they magically appear right off shore when an aircraft of some flavor spots them.
