The IJA 16th Mixed Brigade was hit by 21 X B-24J and 28 X P-38J for moderate casualties. Another strike was then made by 25 X B-24D and 57 X B-24J (4 damaged) for moderate losses. The Japanese artillery missed their targets completely while the Allied artillery barrage inflicted moderate casualties on the Japanese. Tavoy was raided by 13 X B-25J, 11 X Thunderbolt II and 9 X Spitfire VIII. AA fire knocked down 2 Mitchells and damaged 3 others. The airstrip took light damage, a secondary explosion was seen and casualties were extremely light. Another attack was made by 64 X B-25J (3 damaged), 37 X Mosquito FB.VI (2 damaged) and 24 X Thunderbolt II. Damage to the airfield was heavy, a few secondary explosions were claimed and personnel losses were light. Bangkok was swept by 46 X P-38J who pounced on 20 X Zeke, 3 X George, 15 X Jack, 20 X Frank and 4 X Randy. 13 Zekes, a George (1 damaged), 13 Jacks, 11 Franks and all of the Randys were downed while 4 Lightnings were lost and 3 took damage. Another sweep was made by 22 X P-51D who attacked 6 Zekes, 2 Georges and 2 Jacks. 2 Mustangs were shot down and the Japanese lost 4 Zekes, both Georges and the pair of Jacks. Krung Thep was bombed by 48 X B-29, 48 X B-24J (1 damaged) and 134 X Liberator VI (2 damaged). The airfield was very heavily damaged, there were innumerable secondary explosions and casualties were heavy. Cagayan was swept by 42 X F6F who met opposition from 3 X Zeke, 8 X George, 4 X Tojo, 19 X Tony and 34 X Frank. Once the sides had separated the cost to the Japanese had been 2 Zekes, 2 Georges, 3 Tojos, 12 Tonys and 8 Franks destroyed with another Frank having been damaged. 13 Hellcats were lost and 4 were damaged. A reduced CAP of a Zeke, 6 Georges, a Tojo, 7 Tonys and 26 Franks were then faced with an attack from 32 X B-29. Between the flak and fighters 6 bombers were shot down and 7 more took damage. A Zeke was damaged as were 3 Georges, a Tony and 8 Franks. A George, a Tojo, a Tony and 5 Jacks were shot down. The airstrip had light damage, a couple of secondary explosions were observed and casualties were light. The Japanese shipping was attacked by 39 X SBD, 56 X SB2C, 79 X TBF, 138 X TBM, 68 X F6F (1 downed) and 86 X FM-2 (6 destroyed). Through the sacrifice of the Allied fighters the Japanese CAP of a Zeke, 6 Georges, a Tojo, 6 Tonys and 26 Franks never got to the dive bombers and torpedo planes. The Zeke, all of the Georges, the Tojo, 3 Tonys and 12 Franks were shot down. The ships took a pounding. AP Tonei Maru, 1 bomb hit, 3 torpedo hits, on fire, heavy damage, sunk AP Ryusei Maru, 10 bomb hits, 2 torpedo hits, on fire, heavy damage, sunk PG Santo Maru, 10 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage, sunk AP Nichiryo Maru, 9 bomb hits, 1 torpedo hit, on fire, heavy damage, sunk PG Seiko Maru, 3 bomb hits, 2 torpedo hits, on fire, heavy damage, sunk AP Sunten Maru, 3 torpedo hits, on fire, heavy damage AP Nichiro Maru, 5 bomb hits, 3 torpedo hits, on fire, heavy damage MSW Misago Maru #11, 1 torpedo hit, on fire, heavy damage, sunk Men were observed going into the water. Later an AK was attacked by an Avenger and a Hellcat, but it was missed. Kwajalein was struck by 33 X PB4Y for light airfield damage and very light casualties. Gili Gili took a pasting from 45 X B-17E, 94 X B-24D, 20 X B-24J and 5 X Spitfire VIII. The airstrip was very heavily damaged, the port took light damage, there were lots of secondary explosions and casualties were moderate. Lunga was visited by 56 X B-24J who did heavy damage to the port, caused many secondary explosions and inflicted very light troop losses. The 1st Engineer Regiment, at Dobodura, was pounded by 8 X A-20G, 63 X P-38J, 10 X F4U-1 and 7 X Spitfire VIII for light casualties. Then 6 X B-25J, 12 X A-20G and 2 X Kittyhawk III appeared, but they missed the target. The 6th Chinese Air Base Force was missed by 8 Peggys. A Helldiver has spotted an AP near Dumaguete and reported scoring a hit. Then another Helldiver has spotted an AP and they too claimed a hit. Later in the day 16 X SB2C, 18 X TBM and an F6F attacked an AK. It took 6 bomb hits and was a burning, twisted wreck that went down, Another AK took 5 bomb hits, from 22 Helldivers, 18 X Avengers and a Hellcat. At Cotabato Japanese artillery caused moderate Allied losses and they in turn suffered similar losses from the Allied guns. Due to cloud cover the 500th BG never found the target. Gil was happy that happened because their group wasn't the only one to have this problem and he's still in one piece. Later he found out that one of the groups had managed to attack the target, but had been met by Japanese fighters who exacted a heavy price. Gunny sits in a hole with Slim munching on a chocolate bar as he says, “Scuttlebutt has it that a few divisions are on their way to Dadjangas along with some armored formations. They're supposed to kick things loose and relieve us here.” Slim mentions that there's no room for retreat on this front and Gunny replies, “Marines never retreat.” Slim nods and thinks that they get asked to do damned near impossible things. Sam lies on his back watching the Japanese plane drone by. He has gotten himself a recognition book and mutters, the plane type and then looks at the book to see if he's right. Boredom has many cures, none of which are available at the present time on Tori Shima, except for the dog. Bill and Sandy are lost in each other's company. Dave makes himself scare by heading to the garage to do some stuff. The German 1st Army HQs left Metz as the US 3rd Army gained 3 bridgeheads over the Moselle.
