Combat

Shore batteries at Cotabato fired on Allied troops coming ashore and the ships disgorging them. The troops had extremely heavy casualties and many ships were hit, some were heavily damaged and burning. Allied ships returned fire and the Japanese had very light losses. The Allied troops dug in and the Japanese inflicted negligible losses with an artillery bombardment.

3 IJN DDs encountered a mine field at Merak,

Hamamatsu was swept by 58 X P-51D, but the Japanese airspace was devoid of Japanese planes. This was the first Allied fighter sweep of Japan.

Tavoy was bombed by 47 X B-24J (1 damaged), 41 X B-25J, 46 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 damaged), 24 X Thunderbolt II and 10 X Spitfire VIII. The airfield was moderately damaged, the port took light damage, there were some secondary explosions and casualties were very light.

Bangkok was swept by 21 X P-51D who met 29 X Zeke, 4 X George, 27 X Jack, 15 X Frank and 4 X Randy. 9 Zekes, 2 Georges, 9 Jacks (1 damaged), 2 Franks and 2 Randys were destroyed at the cost of 7 Mustangs downed and 2 damaged.

Krung Thep was attacked by 35 X B-29 and 113 X Liberator VI. A Liberator was damaged by the AA fire as the airstrip was pounded for very heavy damage, there were a great many secondary explosions and troop losses were moderate.

The Allied ship 37 miles W of Davao was attacked by 4 Bettys and 4 Jacks. A Betty was damaged by the AA fire thrown up by the MSW Tern who was struck by 2 fish. No fighter cover was present. The Tern went down quickly and hours later a few survivors who were blown overboard were rescued before the sharks got them.

The Allied shipping near Dadjangas was attacked by 17 X Grace, 8 X Betty and 25 X Jack. There were 28 Hellcats able to intercept the Japanese raiders. 15 Graces, 6 Bettys and 22 Jacks were shot down and 2 Hellcats were damaged, but the BB Maryland was struck by a torpedo. A naval bombardment did light damage to the port, triggered a few secondary explosions and inflicted very heavy casualties. Japanese artillery pounded Allied troop positions to no effect.

Davao was attacked by 24 X SB2C (11 damaged), 18 X TBF (4 damaged) and 17 X F6F. The airfield took light damage as did the port, 3 X Judy, 2 X Jack, 3 X Frances, 1 X Betty and 1 X Grace were left burning on the ground and personnel losses were moderate.

Cagayan was swept by 15 X P-51D and the Japanese had 5 X Zeke, 6 X George and 7 X Tojo put up a fight. 2 Zekes, a George (1 damaged) and 3 Tojos were blasted from the sky.

Ed is fuming over the Old Gals not getting all of their promised air cover. “It's great that there are no mines around, but it's hell without the fighters above.” Phil interrupts Ed, handing him a message. Ed reads it at his faces lights up with the biggest smile anyone can ever remember seeing on him. “Gentleman, we got lucky today. The Maryland had no damage from the torpedo as it must have been defective. This is cause for a celebration if anyone cares to join me for something in the wardroom follow me.”

Gunny's war should be over as the guy in front of him and the one behind him were hit by Japanese machine gun fire. As they dig in Slim looks up to see Gunny hovering above his hole. “Mindanao, a lovely place isn't it?” he yells above the din of battle. Slim thinks that he knew this was their destination all along and now that they're there it's turned out to be pure hell.

Middelburg was surrendered by the Germans.

Tito's forces took Monastir and now control the entire border with Greece.

Combat

At Cotabato the troops continue to come ashore, taking heavy casualties. Many of the ships continue to be hit by the coastal guns as they disgorge their loads or trade fire. Japanese artillery barrages accounted for moderate Allied losses.

Dadjangas took a pounding from the Old Gals and their losses were light. The IJA 16th Mixed Brigade was struck by 21 X B-24J and 45 X P-38J for moderate losses. Artillery exchanges saw the Allies take negligible losses and the Japanese had moderate casualties.

Bangkok had 37 X Zeke, 4 X George, 19 X Jack, 19 X Frank and 6 X Randy aloft when 130 X B-29 appeared. The plan for the day went completely to hell as the fighter sweep by Lightnings that was to proceed the bombers hadn't arrived nor had the big birds escorts ever joined them. The fighters took a terrible toll and then the AA fire chipped in. 25 B-29s were shot down and 50 were damaged. 2 Zekes (22 damaged), 2 Georges, 2 Jacks (12 damaged), 2 Franks (10 damaged) were destroyed a pair of Randys were also shot up. Negligible damage was done to the airfield.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force was hit by 12 Peggys who missed the target.

3 Bettys tried to attack the Allied ships near Cotabato only to be rudely greeted and downed by 51 X F6F. Then another 6 Bettys made an effort to pierce the CAP only to loose 4 planes. 2 Bettys escaped into the clouds and 3 Hellcats were damaged.

At his daily update FDR sits through a report given my an Army major. “Our landings at Dadjangas went off about as expected, but the Japanese didn't bite at the feint. The main landings at Cotabato were expected to meet little resistance, but the Japanese moved in shore batteries and at least a division just before we hit the beaches. Overall our losses have been much heavier than expected and our units are in big trouble. Plans are being made to commence loading the troops earmarked for the next phase of operations to bail out the assault on Mindanao. Any questions?” The room is in a state of shocked silence. Nothing of this magnitude was expected. FDR then says that whatever needs to be done should be in motion already and the meeting adjourns.

Troops on Ulithi, Morotai and Menado are on alert to move. The commanders of the units are upset at the prospect of an unexpected operation. More than one division commander has complained about these orders. “We haven't even had any planning time,” exploded one of them. The armored formation COs just seem to be raring to go regardless of where.

Slim can't believe that here he is stuck within 400 yards of the beach, constantly sending for more ammo and water. He can't remember ever being this thirsty. When his runner returns there's more ammo and he's told that water and food are being brought up a little later.

Stick sits near the airstrip awaiting his rotation on CAP duty while he listens to bomber and fighter pilots discussing the rough goings on and over Mindanao. He wishes his Corsair had the range to get into the fight, but it is what it is. The base is on alert for a surprise that the Japanese could launch against them at any time.

The Helena docked at Los Angeles, where she will undergo upgrades. Bill immediately headed to the base's HQs to make sure every went according to plan for the work on his ship, only to learn that he has been relieved of command. His orders grant him 30 days liberty commencing immediately. He is to return to Mare Island at which time further orders will await him. His head is swimming, but he starts thinking of travel to see Sandy and Dave. He wangles usage of a phone and tries to call her, but nobody answers. No problem, he thinks, I'll just call from one of the train stops. So he's off to the train station to head north to San Francisco when an old Annapolis classmate bumps into him. “The train to 'Frisco? Why? I can get you a plane ride for just after lunch. How's that sound? In the meantime we can catch up a bit if you can wait about an hour for me.” Bill readily agrees.

“Mindanao? That's extended range, lots of gas, fewer bombs. We go where the Army says to.” Jake looks over the map and sighs as it'll be one of the longest trips the Lucky 11 have made.

FDR was elected for a fourth term and Harry S. Truman becomes the new VP.

Combat

A Helldiver spotted an AP at Cagayan and reported scoring a hit. A Coronado spotted the same ship in the afternoon and also claimed a bomb hit.

A Kingfisher spotted and attacked a sub 64 miles SW of Cotabato. Later an oil slick was spotted in that area. A little later the AO Caliente was hit by a torpedo and was burning. The escorts couldn't find the attacker.

The Allied troops continued to come ashore at Cotabato and the Japanese shelled them inflicting negligible losses. The IJA 18th Division was targeted by 8 X TBF (1 damaged),152 X TBM (2 downed, 52 damaged), 130 X FM-2, and 8 X F4F-4 for moderate casualties. Before they knew what was going on the IJA 18th Division underwent another attack, this time from 114 X SB2C (1 downed, 32 damaged), 50 X SBD (12 damaged), and 80 X F6F. Troop losses were heavy this time around. 80 X TBF, 73 X TBM and 87 X F6F were next up and the port facilities were the target and missed, but there were some fuel tanks that went up, many other secondary explosions were seen and casualties were moderate. 3 Bettys tried to attack the unloading ships and ran into 48 Hellcats instead. The Bettys turned tail and they lost 2 bombers to the CAP. Japanese artillery threw all they had at the Allied troops, but only caused negligible losses.

Dadjangas was hit by some of the Old Gals and the bombardment caused heavy Japanese casualties. An hour later 178 X B-29 dumped their loads on the port doing moderate damage, triggering a great many secondary explosions and causing moderate troop losses. Then the IJA 16th Mixed Brigade was jumped by 26 X B-24J and 43 X P-38J for moderate losses. Another air attack made up of 20 X SB2C, 27 X TBF and 1 X F6F hit next, but failed to drop on target. Artillery exchanges throughout the day caused no Allied casualties and moderate Japanese losses.

An IJN sub struck an LST with a torpedo 21 miles W of Dadjangas, The escorts quickly found and attacked the sub, claiming many hits. For hours the escorts continued their ASW attack and claimed that they scored many more hits on a sub. While the sub was being attacked the LST's crew was ordered to abandon ship and orders to scuttle were given. Her skipper slipped and went down a ladder hitting his head. He was knocked out and nobody noticed that he was missing until it was to late.

Bangkok was swept by 128 X P-38J and the Japanese foolishly gave them a fight with 36 X Zeke, 4 X George, 23 X Jack, 15 X Frank and 4 X Randy. The Japanese managed to kill 3 Lightnings and damage another 4. The Allied fighters feasted on the over matched Japanese planes shooting down all of the Zekes, Georges and Randys, all but 1 of the Jacks were destroyed and 8 Franks were flamed.

Krung Thep was hit by 41 X B-25J and 12 X Spitfire VIII for very light damage to the airstrip and a single secondary explosion. 8 of the Mitchells were damaged by the AA fire.

The Japanese ships near Tagbalarin were attacked by 16 PB4Ys who hit 1 AP with a bomb causing a fire and another with 6 bombs, doing heavy damage and flames. Troops were seen diving into the water and a third AP left them there. 3 more PB4Ys rolled in, but missed the AP that was undamaged.

Allied troops unloaded over beach at Kavieng taking heavy losses.

During the long flight from Guam to Mindanao Gil got some sleep, as usual. When they arrived over the target and dropped their bombs their path took them out over the Celebes Sea, which was full of American ships of all imaginable types. Ham called to Gil, “Come here and get a load of this.” Gil was amazed and he thought that this sight was something that would stay with him for the rest of his life. He remarked to Ham that he never knew that there were so many ships in the world and then thanked him for calling him to take in the view. The long flight back was pretty boring and Gil consumed some V8 juice and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Gil idles away the time staring at a picture of Elaine that he has hanging at his station and when they get back to Guam he detaches it and brings it back to his Quonset hut. The guys grab some chow and then sack out, but Gil is to wound up so he writes a letter to Elaine and then another to his family.

Slim can't understand why the order to push inland hasn't been passed and he curses at a gun crew as they fumble with the changing of a gun barrel. At least he has water and food along with plenty of ammo. Gunny suddenly appears to check if all is OK and Slim says, “Just peachy. It's a good thing that this landing was supposed to be virtually unopposed. I'd hate to think of what it'd be like if the Japs were here in strength.” Gunny grins, pats Slim on the back and says he'll be back later and off he goes. Slim thinks that Gunny must lead a charmed life to be exposed so much enemy fire and still be in one piece.

Stick flew another CAP mission and of course nothing happened. A snooper flew over the base while he was on an outbound leg of his racetrack pattern that had him to far away to even attempt to intercept. He wonders if he'll ever get a chance at a kill.

Bill's flight to San Francisco was uneventful and uncomfortable in the C-47. It felt strange that the roar of the motors became a drone and then when that was gone the quiet was weird. Now Bill is sitting on a bus that will take him to his destination. He still hasn't been able to call ahead and let them know that he's on his way. It'll be interesting, he thinks.

Sandy leaves the Post Office with a stack of letters in hand. When she rejoins Dave he sees her bundle and says, “He must've been in a port somewhere.” When all of their errands are done they head back home.

For the first time Hitler failed to appear in Munich to speak on the anniversary of the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch. Himmler appeared instead.

25,000 Jews were marched over 100 miles in rain and snow from Budapest to the Austrian border. The second march of over 50,000 ended at the Mauthausen Concentration camp.

Combat

A Helldiver spotted an AP near Cebu Island and claimed a hit. An SBD located and attacked another AP in the same area in the afternoon, claiming a hit. A PB4Y got into the act and hit a ship that had prior damage, again in the same general area. A Japanese AK near Cebu Island was attacked by a TBM and a Hellcat. Though they did no damage to the vessel it was reported as heavily damaged and burning from a previous attack.

Allied troops continued to unload over beach at Cotabato, taking negligible losses. Japanese artillery accounted for moderate casualties. The IJA 18th Division was jumped by 43 X SBD (14 damaged), 98 X SB2C (3 downed, 25 damaged), 30 X TBM (3 destroyed, 17 damaged), 88 X F6F, 31 X FM-2 and 8 X F4F-4. The unit absorbed heavy casualties. At almost the same time the IJA 100th Division, nearby, was bombed by a single SB2C, an F6F and 89 X FM-2. The Helldiver was damaged and no harm was done to the Japanese.

The SS Scamp, 13 miles E of Iloilo, attacked an AK under escort by 7 X PG. The target was struck by a torpedo which caused heavy damage and fires to break out. The sub underwent a violent time as the escorts hammered away at her for hours and she'll now return to base for repairs as she has light systems damage and moderate flooding.

Dadjangas was pounded by some of the Old Gals. The port had light damage, there were some secondary explosions and casualties were light. The IJA 16th Mixed Brigade was attacked by 22 X B-24J and 29 X P-38J. Troop losses were light. The unit then absorbed another strike made by 31 X B-24D (3 damaged) and 56 X B-24J (2 damaged). This time the casualties were heavy. Artillery exchanges throughout the day cost both sides very light losses.

Krung Thep was raided by 30 X B-25J, 11 X Thunderbolt II and 9 X Spitfire VIII. They were surprised to find 2 X Zeke, 2 X George, 7 X Jack and 10 X Frank there to meet them. The Allied escorts did their job well as they nailed both Zekes, a pair of Jacks and 6 Franks. The bombers lost a plane to AA fire as they did very light damage to the airfield, a few secondary explosions were seen and personnel losses were extremely light.

A Helldiver spotted an AP near Cagayan and reported a hit. Another AP was spotted and hit by an SB2C later on in the day. Cagayan was swept by 21 X P-51D who attacked the CAP of 8 X Zeke, 13 X George, 7 X Tojo and 13 X Tony. A Mustang exploded and 3 others were damaged as the Japanese lost 2 Zekes, 4 Georges (1 damaged), 3 Tojos and 3 Tonys. An IJN AP was attacked by 4 X PB4Y and 3 X P-38J. 6 X Zeke, 10 X George, 5 X Tojo and 15 X Tony attacked them and knocked down a bomber, damaging 2 others. The ship was hit by 2 bombs and was burning. Then the CAP had to deal with 6 X PB4Y and 26 X P-38J. A Zeke, 2 Georges, 2 Tojos and 2 Tonys were shot down as the Lightnings did their job of protecting the bombers well. 2 APs were hit, 1 a few times and it was heavily damaged and both were burning. Troops were observed going into the water. One of the ships was seen sinking a little later.

Gili Gili was struck by 47 X B-17E, 96 X B-24D, 48 X B-24J and 5 X Spitfire VIII for light damage to the port, heavy damage to the airstrip, some secondary explosions were observed and casualties were heavy.

The 1st Engineer Regiment, at Dobodura, was hit by 8 X A-20G, 63 X P-38J, 7 X Spitfire VIII and 12 X F4U-1 for light losses.

The SS Sennet, 189 miles E of Marcus Island, attacked an unescorted AP. Her deck gun scored a pair of hits and 3 fish tore out the side of the hapless vessel, which went under rapidly.

Kavieng was taken by Allied forces.

The SS Tarpon departed Palau for a patrol in the Sulu Sea. The crew hopes that hunting will be better than it was in the Solomons.

FDR once again holds a meeting about the situation on Mindanao. Once all of the military are done presenting the situation as they see it FDR thanks them and says, “I don't care what it takes, I want that island liberated. If it means that every formation held for our next operation must be thrown into the fight then so be it. If the Japanese are willing to throw more troops into Mindanao we should see this as an opportunity to eliminate these units now, rather than face them later. The excuse that our forces will be weaker from losses will hold true for the Japanese also. Remember about my being told that we hold command of the air and sea? You also informed me that this allows us to apply superior force on the ground at just about any point we choose to do so. Well gentlemen I choose to do so on Mindanao so hold nothing back. The Philippine people have waited long enough to have the yoke of Japan removed from their throats.” With that the meeting breaks up. A Presidential aide tells Franklin that would've made a great speech for a radio address to the nation and Franklin replies that maybe in the future, but not now. “We don't want the Japanese to know what our plans are.”

Sam watches as a Japanese plane flies overhead , looking around. The boredom is overbearing. The only distraction is caring for your gear, waiting for the Japanese to attack. The fact that they've been untouched so far is unbelievable to Sam. It just makes no sense to let your enemy camp out on your doorstep and not respond.

Slim's section lost a man to a mortar barrage today. They burrow into their holes, deeper and deeper wondering what the hell is going on. It seems that the Japanese are throwing more and more at them and Slim wonders if an assault by either side is in the offing. One of the lads was heard to grumble, “We landed and then turned turtle waiting for the Japs to try and push us back into the sea.” Slim thinks about this and is worried that there's no place to retreat to. He calls over a couple of his ammo carriers and tells them to go and get more ammo and water. He has a suspicion that they'll be needing lots of both very soon.

Bill's bus broke down and it finally arrived at his destination. His only problem is that it's the middle of the night so he decides to sleep in the town's bus terminal. It's actually little more than a bus stop and when he stretches out on the bench a police officer observes him. Once the officer sees Bill's uniform he offers the hospitality of the police station. Bill thanks him and hops into the police car. While they head to the station Bill is asked where he's going and upon hearing that his goal is to reach Dave's service station the policeman says, “Hell, I can drive you out there first thing in the morning.”

The Germans surrendered Walcheren and evacuated the Moerdijk bridgehead across the Meuse.

Combat

Tabar was occupied by the Allies

Some of the Old Gals conducted a naval bombardment of Dadjangas causing heavy casualties.

Tavoy was hit by 19 X B-25J (1 downed, 1 damaged), 11 X Thunderbolt II and 12 X Spitfire VIII. The airfield was very lightly damaged and a secondary explosion was seen .

Bangkok was swept by 71 X P-38J who swooped in on 26 X Zeke, 4 X George, 12 X Jack, 11 X Frank and 3 X Randy. The fight was fast and furious as 23 Zekes, all of the Georges, 11 Jacks, 7 Franks and all of the Randys were blasted from the sky. 3 Lightnings were destroyed and 2 were damaged.

Cagayan was swept by 37 X F6F and 6 X Zeke, 11 X George, 7 X Tojo and 24 X Tony gave battle. 3 Hellcats were downed and another was damaged as the Japanese lost 2 Zekes, 8 Georges, 4 Tojos and 17 Tonys. A little later a reduced CAP of 4 X Zeke, 3 X George and 7 X Tony were faced with 19 X P-51D who dove on them out of the sun. 3 Zekes and 3 Tonys were killed as the Japanese planes tried to run. A Zeke, 3 Georges and 4 Tonys were then faced with an attack made by 38 X SB2C, 53 X TBF, 131 X TBM (2 downed, 1 damaged) and 4 X F6F. Once again the Japanese fighters ran and the attackers lined up the ships below. Methodically they dealt out punishment and the results were.

These ships were loaded with troops destined to join the fight on Mindanao, but now they are fish bait. Another attack was made by 9 X PB4Y and 21 X P-38J. The Zeke, 3 Georges and 4 Tonys decided to fight this time around. The Zeke was flamed and 3 Tonys were shot down while they managed to damage a Lightning. 2 APs were struck by 2 bombs each and both suffered heavy damage and were burning. More Japanese soldiers found themselves in the water struggling to survive. Then 3 Georges and a Tony faced 4 X SBD and an F6F, but they didn`t attack. An AK paid the price by absorbing a bomb hit that caused a fire to break out. These same fighters then witnessed 18 X TBF and a Hellcat arrive. A George was shot down when it tried a half hearted attack. An AK was struck by 2 torpedoes, suffering heavy damage and fires that caused her demise. Later 4 X PB4Y arrived and 2 Zekes, 5 Georges, 3 Tojos and 3 Tonys intercepted them. A George was shot up, a bomber was lost and another was damaged. The target was not harmed.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was bombed by 11 Peggys who missed their target.

A Japanese AP near Dumaguete was attacked by 20 X SB2C and 18 X TBM. The ship was struck by 12 bombs which caused massive damage and fires. Ultimately the ship went under. Another AP in the same area was jumped by 12 X SB2C and an F6F. The vessel was ravaged by 5 bomb hits and slid under the waves.. Yet another AP soaked up 5 bomb hits, 3 torpedo hits, on fire, heavy damage when attacked by 16 Helldivers, 18 Avengers and a Hellcat. A Helldiver spotted an AK and reported a hit. In the afternoon another Helldiver spotted an AP in the same area and claimed a hit.

A Japanese AK near Cebu Island was attacked by 18 X TBF and a Hellcat. The ship was hammered by 4 fish, sinking it. A PB2Y located a merchantman and claimed a hit in the same area.

A Japanese AP 27 miles W of Iloilo was spotted and attacked by a Helldiver who missed.

At Cotabato Japanese artillery inflicted moderate Allied casualties.

Dadjangas was the scene of artillery exchanges with the Japanese sustaining negligible losses and the Allies none.

At another meeting FDR wonders aloud if the Japanese are denuding Leyte to send so many troops to Mindanao. The generals say that it's possible, but that we can't leave our boys hanging on facing so many Japanese and not send in the muscle to deal with the problem. It's agreed that a debacle must be avoided and if Mindanao is to be a battle of wills then the United States will not be the one to blink. An admiral coughs and says that maintaining the carriers in this fight is draining their air groups of serviceable aircraft and that a rotation must begin shortly to bring them back up to strength.

Ed wonders how long his Old Gals can keep this pace up. He's split the force in half to have more guns on target more often, but the resupply and fuel at Morotai is putting a strain on the ships. Phil watches in amazement at the broadsides hurled at the target and wonders how anybody can survive it.

Slim is cursing and pointing so that the men will train their gun on the Japanese showing themselves on the right. Gunny comes by and asks how they're doing. “Oh we're just great,” says Slim. “Everybody but the brass seems to know that the Japanese must have their whole damned army facing us and what do we get? I'll tell what we get. canned peaches. We could use a few more divisions here otherwise I'll have to kill more than my share for a change.” Gunny claps him on the back and shouts that as long as everything is normal he'll be back later. The shelling doesn't seem to let up, but now orders have been passed that everything from 60mm mortars to the 105s will open up tomorrow. Slim wishes the planes were still attacking, but they're off somewhere else.

Gil is stunned that they'll have no fighter escort and be hitting a hornet's nest at extended range. “Cagayan is where on Mindao?” he mutters to himself looking at the map. Brooklyn seems so far away. A couple of the guys join him looking at the map and there's not a smiling face among them.

Bill arrives after sharing a breakfast with the patrolman, who then drove him to Dave and Sandy's. Bill walks from the station, which is still closed, to the house and knocks on the door. Dave answers and with a huge smile on his face places a finger across his lips as a signal to be quiet while shaking Bill's hand. Dave then asks Sandy to please get the door and he steps aside just in time as Sandy, upon seeing Bill, almost bowls him over. “I'll leave you two alone for a bit,” says Dave as Bill and Sandy embrace and kiss.

Combat

Once more some of Ed's Old Gals conducted a naval bombardment of Dadjangas and they damaged the port lightly. The IJA 16th Mixed Brigade was hit by 21 X B-24J and 28 X P-38J for moderate casualties. Another strike was then made by 25 X B-24D and 57 X B-24J (4 damaged) for moderate losses. The Japanese artillery missed their targets completely while the Allied artillery barrage inflicted moderate casualties on the Japanese.


Tavoy was raided by 13 X B-25J, 11 X Thunderbolt II and 9 X Spitfire VIII. AA fire knocked down 2 Mitchells and damaged 3 others. The airstrip took light damage, a secondary explosion was seen and casualties were extremely light. Another attack was made by 64 X B-25J (3 damaged), 37 X Mosquito FB.VI (2 damaged) and 24 X Thunderbolt II. Damage to the airfield was heavy, a few secondary explosions were claimed and personnel losses were light.

Bangkok was swept by 46 X P-38J who pounced on 20 X Zeke, 3 X George, 15 X Jack, 20 X Frank and 4 X Randy. 13 Zekes, a George (1 damaged), 13 Jacks, 11 Franks and all of the Randys were downed while 4 Lightnings were lost and 3 took damage. Another sweep was made by 22 X P-51D who attacked 6 Zekes, 2 Georges and 2 Jacks. 2 Mustangs were shot down and the Japanese lost 4 Zekes, both Georges and the pair of Jacks.

Krung Thep was bombed by 48 X B-29, 48 X B-24J (1 damaged) and 134 X Liberator VI (2 damaged). The airfield was very heavily damaged, there were innumerable secondary explosions and casualties were heavy.

Cagayan was swept by 42 X F6F who met opposition from 3 X Zeke, 8 X George, 4 X Tojo, 19 X Tony and 34 X Frank. Once the sides had separated the cost to the Japanese had been 2 Zekes, 2 Georges, 3 Tojos, 12 Tonys and 8 Franks destroyed with another Frank having been damaged. 13 Hellcats were lost and 4 were damaged. A reduced CAP of a Zeke, 6 Georges, a Tojo, 7 Tonys and 26 Franks were then faced with an attack from 32 X B-29. Between the flak and fighters 6 bombers were shot down and 7 more took damage. A Zeke was damaged as were 3 Georges, a Tony and 8 Franks. A George, a Tojo, a Tony and 5 Jacks were shot down. The airstrip had light damage, a couple of secondary explosions were observed and casualties were light. The Japanese shipping was attacked by 39 X SBD, 56 X SB2C, 79 X TBF, 138 X TBM, 68 X F6F (1 downed) and 86 X FM-2 (6 destroyed). Through the sacrifice of the Allied fighters the Japanese CAP of a Zeke, 6 Georges, a Tojo, 6 Tonys and 26 Franks never got to the dive bombers and torpedo planes. The Zeke, all of the Georges, the Tojo, 3 Tonys and 12 Franks were shot down. The ships took a pounding.

Men were observed going into the water. Later an AK was attacked by an Avenger and a Hellcat, but it was missed.

Kwajalein was struck by 33 X PB4Y for light airfield damage and very light casualties.

Gili Gili took a pasting from 45 X B-17E, 94 X B-24D, 20 X B-24J and 5 X Spitfire VIII. The airstrip was very heavily damaged, the port took light damage, there were lots of secondary explosions and casualties were moderate.

Lunga was visited by 56 X B-24J who did heavy damage to the port, caused many secondary explosions and inflicted very light troop losses.

The 1st Engineer Regiment, at Dobodura, was pounded by 8 X A-20G, 63 X P-38J, 10 X F4U-1 and 7 X Spitfire VIII for light casualties. Then 6 X B-25J, 12 X A-20G and 2 X Kittyhawk III appeared, but they missed the target.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force was missed by 8 Peggys.

A Helldiver has spotted an AP near Dumaguete and reported scoring a hit. Then another Helldiver has spotted an AP and they too claimed a hit. Later in the day 16 X SB2C, 18 X TBM and an F6F attacked an AK. It took 6 bomb hits and was a burning, twisted wreck that went down, Another AK took 5 bomb hits, from 22 Helldivers, 18 X Avengers and a Hellcat.

At Cotabato Japanese artillery caused moderate Allied losses and they in turn suffered similar losses from the Allied guns.

Due to cloud cover the 500th BG never found the target. Gil was happy that happened because their group wasn't the only one to have this problem and he's still in one piece. Later he found out that one of the groups had managed to attack the target, but had been met by Japanese fighters who exacted a heavy price.

Gunny sits in a hole with Slim munching on a chocolate bar as he says, “Scuttlebutt has it that a few divisions are on their way to Dadjangas along with some armored formations. They're supposed to kick things loose and relieve us here.” Slim mentions that there's no room for retreat on this front and Gunny replies, “Marines never retreat.” Slim nods and thinks that they get asked to do damned near impossible things.

Sam lies on his back watching the Japanese plane drone by. He has gotten himself a recognition book and mutters, the plane type and then looks at the book to see if he's right. Boredom has many cures, none of which are available at the present time on Tori Shima, except for the dog.

Bill and Sandy are lost in each other's company. Dave makes himself scare by heading to the garage to do some stuff.

The German 1st Army HQs left Metz as the US 3rd Army gained 3 bridgeheads over the Moselle.

Dadjangas was bombarded again by the Old Gals for light port damage, some secondary explosions and heavy casualties. Then suddenly the sky was filled with Allied aircraft. 41 X SB2C, 27 X TBF, 18 X TBM and 29 X F6F did light damage to the port, triggered a single secondary explosion and caused extremely light casualties. Both sides hurled shells of all sizes at one another with the Japanese having light casualties and the Allies none.

Tavoy was raided by 56 X B-25J, 42 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 damaged) and 15 X Thunderbolt II. The airstrip took heavy damage, there were a large number of secondary explosions and troop losses were light.

Krung Thep was bombed by 48 X B-29, 45 X B-24J (1 damaged) and 117 Liberator VI (4 damaged). The airfield took extremely heavy damage, a huge number of secondary explosions erupted and casualties were moderate.

Cagayan witnessed a wayward Hellcat chased off by the CAP of 3 Zekes, 2 Georges, 2 Tojos, 7 Tonys and 11 Franks. A Japanese AK near Cagayan was attacked by 1 X TBM, 60 X F6F, 65 X FM-2 and 8 X F4F-4. Some of the Hellcats were on a sweep and just happened to arrive on target at the same time as the other Allied planes. The Japanese CAP didn't do so well this time around as all of the aircraft were shot down except for a pair of Tonys and a Frank. 3 Hellcats were downed, 8 FM-2s were destroyed (3 damaged) and an F4F-4 went down. The ship was unharmed. Later a Frank chased a Helldiver away before it could attack an AK. A renewed CAP of a Zeke, a Tony and 2 Franks were faced with 20 X SBD, 47 X SB2C (1 damaged), 79 X TBF, 149 X TBM (1 downed, 2 damaged) and 18 X F6F. The CAP was brushed aside with all of the Japanese fighters being shot down. The airstrip took moderate damage, the port was heavily hit, there were a very large number of secondary explosions, a Zeke, a Frank, a Jack, a George and a Tojo were trashed on the ground and troop losses were light.

Gili Gili suffered through an attack made by 43 X B-17E, 64 X B-24D, 43 X B-24J and 5 X Spitfire VIII who caused very heavy damage to the airfield, light damage to the port, some secondary explosions and moderate personnel losses.

Lunga was hit by 52 X B-24J for light damage to the port and many secondary explosions.

The 1st Engineer Regiment, at Dobodura, was pounced on by 9 X A-20G, 48 X P-38J and 7 X Spitfire VIII, but the Japanese were protected from harm hidden by the jungle canopy. Later 6 X B-25J, 11 X A-20G and 2 X Kittyhawk III attacked, but they too failed to harm the starving Japanese.

The 5th New Chinese Corps had moderate losses due to a raid made by 11 X Peggy.

A Japanese AP near Bacolod was spotted and attacked by an SB2C who claimed a hit that caused heavy damage and fire.

Nagoya was under an umbrella of 11 X Frank when 50 X P-51D appeared on a sweep. 5 of the Franks were killed as they fled.

At Cotabato Slim's prayers were answered as 23 X SBD (1 damaged), 23 X SB2C (3 damaged), 9 X TBF, 36 X TBM (3 damaged), 36 X F6F, 58 X FM-2, and 8 X F4F-4 attacked. The airfield was lightly damaged, the port was also lightly hit, there were a few secondary explosions and personnel losses were light. Artillery exchanges raged throughout the day with the Allies having very light casualties and the Japanese had heavy losses.

FDR has been given an update on the situation on Mindanao and though nothing has really changed there the scales will soon be tipped as more troops should start arriving within the next few days. The supply situation there is good and so far morale is OK as the troops believe that they will prevail.

It was all he could do to keep himself in his fighting hole and not to jump up and down with joy at seeing the Navy's planes buzzing overhead. Slim isn't deluding himself as he knows that they're up against it with the Japanese growing in numbers daily.

Stick hear rumors of the air battles over Mindanao and he wonders if the Flying Deuces will ever get into the thick of things. “The quickest way to cool a spot off is to send us in,” he quips.

Chris enjoys a dip as he swims around, not to far from the beach. With the Yorktown anchored not far away there's nothing for him to do. He's flown lots of missions and doesn't regret not being involved in the action around Mindanao. He's got 9 kills to his credit and if he never sees another Japanese plane that would be OK with him. He's tired of the war and especially the stress of flying off of a carrier all of the time. He knows that this respite from combat will not last though.

Bill and Sandy went for a hike today and he teased her about how she looked bundled up against the cold. “Then you'll have to grow longer arms to put around me,” she teased back.

Gene stares at the keel of the ship and tells his crew to hold off until he returns. When he gets back the big wheels have assigned his crew to another job while the bigger problem with the ship is taken care of by qualified workers who know how to deal with it. “We're all specialists these days,” he tells his guys as they get set up to make repairs to another area. Some of these ships have battle damage, but most are fatigued, just worn out.

The RAF finally managed to sink the Tirpitz near Tromso, Norway. Over 1,000 of the crew were trapped when the ship capsized and were lost.

Combat

New Hanover Island was occupied by the Allies

The SS Sabalo, mid ocean between Japan and Marcus Island, spotted and attacked a lone AP. In the predawn light she scored 4 hits with her deck gun and 2 torpedo hits. Many soldiers were seen jumping from the burning, twisted wreck.

The Old Gals once again unloaded a naval bombardment on the Japanese defenders at Dadjangas. A secondary explosion blossomed and casualties were heavy. The coastal guns fired at Allied troops that were landing, causing very heavy losses and an LCI(G) took 4 hits. A strike of 31 X B-24J and 28 X P-38J targeted the port and did moderately light damage to it, triggered a secondary explosion and caused very light casualties. Sporadic artillery exchanges caused no Allied losses and light Japanese casualties.

Nagoya was swept by 50 X P-51D who found 3 Franks aloft. 2 of the Japanese fighters were shot down and the other ducked into the clouds.

Tavoy was bombed by 52 X B-25J (5 damaged), 43 X Mosquito FB.VI (3 damaged) and 23 X Thunderbolt II. The airstrip took heavy damage, a secondary explosion was claimed and personnel losses were light.

Bangkok underwent a fighter sweep made by 66 X P-47D who attacked 21 X Zeke, 4 X George, 17 X Jack, 6 X Tony, 12 X Frank and a Randy. The Jugs, who were flying at extended range, ditched their drop tanks and tore into the Japanese fighters. 14 Zekes, 3 Georges, 11 Jacks, 5 Tonys, 8 Franks and the Randy were shot down. This didn't happen without cost as 13 Thunderbolts were lost and 5 others were damaged.

Krung Thep was hit by 45 X B-29, 43 X B-24J and 108 X Liberator VI (2 damaged). A lone Zeke was in the air and promptly vacated the area. The airfield was very heavily damaged, there were many secondary explosions and troop losses were heavy.

Lautem's port was lightly damaged and there were a couple of secondary explosions seen by the 48 X B-24J who attacked the base.

Davao was bombed by 91 X B-24J (1 damaged), 41 X B-24D (3 damaged) and 10 X PB4Y. The airfield was subjected to very heavy damage, there were a great many secondary explosions, 4 Jacks were left burning and casualties were heavy.

Cagayan was the object of attention of 2 pair of Hellcats who had the audacity to engage 16 X Zeke, 3 X George, a Tojo, 8 X Tony and 8 X Frank. 3 Zekes tumbled from the sky and a Hellcat was damaged. Then a fighter sweep of 21 X P-51D dove on the CAP and 6 Zekes (1 damaged), 2 Georges, 2 Tonys and 2 Franks were shot down. 2 Mustangs were lost and another was damaged. A Japanese AK near Cagayan was attacked by a TBM and 3 Hellcats. 7 Zekes, a George, a Tojo, 6 Tonys and 6 Franks half halfheartedly intercepted the Allied planes. A George was destroyed and the torpedo bomber missed the ship. The CAP was then challenged by 1 X SB2C, 1 X TBM, 31 X F6F, 94 X FM-2 and 8 X F4F-4. Though the Japanese planes tried to avoid a fight they were all destroyed. They did manage to down a Hellcat (1 damaged), 5 FM-2s (1 damaged) and an F4F-4. The pair of PGs attacked avoided being hit. A little later 6 X Zeke and a George had the misfortune to be in the way of another Allied strike consisting of 16 X SBD (1 damaged), 45 X SB2C (2 damaged), 58 X TBF (1 damaged), 166 X TBM (1 downed) and 17 X F6F (1 downed). 4 of the Zekes, were shot down and the George ran for it's life. The airstrip was lightly damaged, the port took heavy damage, a very large number of secondary explosions were seen, 4 Franks, a Jack, a Tojo and a Tony were ravaged on the ground and personnel losses were light.

Gili Gili suffered through an attack made by 39 X B-17E, 87 X B-24D, 45 X B-24J and 5 X Spitfire VIII. The airstrip took heavy damage, the port was lightly damaged, a great many secondary explosions were reported and troop losses were moderate.

The 1st Engineer Regiment, at Dobodura, was once more saved by the jungle as 6 X A-20G, 48 X P-38J and 7 X Spitfire VIII tried to harm them. In the afternoon another attack was made by 7 X B-25J, 14 X A-20G and Kittyhawk III and it too failed. The jungle is ravaging the troops on both sides with disease and saving them from other things.

5th New Chinese Corps had very light losses from 8 marauding Peggys.

Nanning had a CAP of 7 Zekes, 18 Jacks, 6 Tojos, 12 Nicks and 10 Tonys up when a fighter sweep of 47 X P-38J arrived. In the brief battle 4 Zekes, 12 Jacks, 5 Tojos, 7 Nicks and all of the Tonys were destroyed while there were 4 Lightnings downed and 2 damaged.

Cotabato was hit by 2 X SBD, 23 X SB2C (1 damaged), 9 X TBF, 20 X TBM (2 damaged), 20 X F6F and 101 X FM-2 for very light damage to the airfield and there were moderate casualties. Both sides threw artillery shells at each other all day long and the Japanese sustained moderate losses while the Allied forces had light casualties.

Slim is curled up in his hole cheering the Allied planes until he's lost his voice. All the while Japanese mortar rounds explode around the defensive line held by the 2nd Marine Division. The Japanese strength has grown while the Americans hang on to their little beachhead awaiting the inevitable assault on them.

Sam stares at the Japanese snooper and says “Dinah.” The guy with him looks at the recognition book and agrees. “I'm getting good at this crap. Now if somebody would just shoot the bastards down I'd be happy,” he says as he scratches Frankie's head.

Red leans on the rail of the Palawan and stares at all of the ships loading and unloading at Morotai. He's heard many plain language radio transmissions from the many ships operating in the waters around Mindanao and he wonders if his convoy is bound for there or they're just waiting to unload. Cookie has already said that their cargo is destined to go to Mindanao and that they're just waiting for a base to fall to the Allied troops before they depart. Red replies that time will tell.

Combat

A Helldiver spotted and attacked an AP hundreds of miles NE of Marcus Island, claiming a hit.

At Dadjangas the Japanese gunners busily continued to pour fire on the troops landing, inflicting heavy casualties and firing at the ships standing offshore. The Old Gals continued their daily naval bombardment causing light damage to the port, a couple of secondary explosions and heavy troop losses. Artillery barrages were thrown at both sides of the lines with the Japanese having negligible casualties and the Allies none.

Tavoy came under attack from 46 X B-25J (2 damaged), 45 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 damaged), 24 X Thunderbolt II and 10 X Spitfire VIII. The airfield was heavily hit, there were some secondary explosions and casualties were very light.

Bangkok was swept by 24 P-51D who dove into the gaggle of Japanese fighters even though they were vastly outnumbered. 18 X Zeke, 5 X George, 16 X Jack, a Tony, 14 X Frank and a pair of Randys tried to fight the Mustangs off as best as they could. A pair of Mustangs were shot down and another was shot up while they tore up the Japanese planes to the tune of 8 Zekes, 3 Georges, 5 Jacks, a Tony, 7 Franks and a Randy blasted from the sky. The only thing that saved the Japanese survivors was lack of ammunition in the Mustangs.

Krung Thep was hit by 40 X B-29, 43 X B-24J (1 damaged) and 102 X Liberator VI. The airfield took extremely heavy damage, there were a great number of secondary explosions and personnel losses were moderate.

Koepang was raided by 36 X B-24J and AA fire damaged 5 of them. The port was moderately damaged and there was a very large number of secondary explosions seen.

The 5th New Chinese Corps had light casualties from 13 Peggys.

An attack was made on a lone AP by the SS Lancetfish near Cagayan. The target absorbed 2 torpedo hits, was burning and heavily damaged. The the base was attacked by 12 X SBD (1 damaged), 6 X SB2C (1 damaged), 55 X TBF (1 damaged), 161 X TBM (5 downed, 3 damaged) and 21 X F6F. 4 X Zeke, 3 X George, 1 X Tojo, 2 X Tony and 7 X Frank tried to stop the attack, but the Hellcats went about their deadly job with great efficiency destroying a Zeke, a George, 2 Tojos and 3 Franks. Another Frank took damage and the Japanese never penetrated the Allied fighter's protective umbrella. The airfield took extremely light damage, the port none, there were many secondary explosions claimed and casualties were extremely light. Japanese ships were attacked by 1 X SB2C, 1 X TBM, 13 X F6F, 84 X FM-2 and 8 X F4F-4. 3 X Zeke, 2 X George, 2 X Tony and 4 X Frank tried to stop the Allied planes and as a result all of them were shot down. 5 FM-2 were lost and 2 others were damaged as a PG was hit by a bomb.

Cotabato was attacked by 4 X SBD, 47 X SB2C (3 damaged), 9 X TBF, 5 X TBM and 27 X F6F for negligible damage to the airstrip, light damage to the port, some secondary explosions were observed and troop losses were light. Artillery exchanges raged on and off throughout the day as Allied losses were moderate and the Japanese had heavy casualties.

Tori Shima was attacked by 18 X Betty, 27 X Zero, 18 X Randy and a snooping Dinah. They had the misfortune to be intercepted by 47 X P-51D. 2 Bettys, 14 Zeros and 18 Randys were shot down. The Dinah was damaged and all of the survivors turned back before ever reaching their target. 7 Mustangs took some damage during the battle.

Reports of sinking APs and AKs from the recent battles in the Mindanao area continue to pour in from the air patrols.

“A Dinah!,” Sam shouts above the din of it's motor. “Get him,” he yells at the Mustang on it's tail. Sam didn't get to see the battle not to far from the island, but he's pleased that the Dinah was smoking as it disappeared with an American fighter chasing it. Later on he hears scuttlebutt about the Japanese sending a huge air armada at the island and how the Mustangs swept them all from the sky. “See I knew that sooner or later they would come at us. They'll be back too, mark my words,” he announces to anybody within earshot.

Another day of rain keeps Guam's B-29 crews happily bored. Some of the Lucky 11 grab soap and rush outside for a shower and luckily the rain continues so they are rinsed off too. Gil finds it amusing to see so many naked men running around happily soaping themselves up.

Red now knows that the first functional port facility taken on Mindanao is where the Palawan will be going. There are advantages to manning the ship's radio other than avoiding the back breaking work.

Art eases the O'Bannon out of the anchorage at Ulithi and they join up with some DDs and CVEs for action in the Mindanao area. Frank is concerned that this will be the first action for many of his crew and though they have trained to a high state of readiness nothing is like the real thing. Frank allows his mind to drift back to the bleak days where the O'Bannon fought for her life under the command of Bill and he hopes that he can also bring his ship home.

Slim doesn't need to be told that the Japanese troop strength facing him is growing daily. The plane attacks today were fewer in number and he's beginning to worry that the 2nd Marines are in for a very tough time in the struggle to survive. His fighting hole is about 400 yards inland and that leaves nowhere to fall back to. He stares at all of the ammo boxes, spare gun barrels and all the other stuff that they need and wonders how many Japanese they'll have to kill and when more help will arrive. For now both sides seem to be content throwing artillery and mortar rounds at each other, but Slim knows that the inevitable attacks will soon begin.

Sandy and Bill sit together silently watching the flames dance in the fireplace. He's wondering about asking her to marry him and how to pop the question while she's wondering if he'll ever ask her. Dave snaps them out of their thought with the suggestion that some hot coffee has been freshly brewed and the apple pie that Sandy made today would go very nicely with it. “Would either of you two care to join me? I've been meaning to ask you about the quality of the Navy's coffee. Care to fill me in?”

Combat

An SB2C Helldiver spotted an AK near Dumaguete and reported scoring a hit. Later in the day a TBM and 5 F6Fs found an AK in the same general area. The torpedo bomber scored a hit with her torpedo, sinking what was presumed to have been the same ship.

The coastal guns at Dadjangas continued firing at the Allied ships lying offshore and the troops that continue to land. Casualties were extremely heavy, 2 LSTs and an MSW were struck multiple times and 2 DDs were hit once each. The Old Gals conducted another naval bombardment and inflicted light casualties. The IJA 16th Mixed Brigade was attacked by 53 X SB2C and 30 F6F. Casualties were light. Then 20 X B-24J (1 damaged) and 27 X P-38J dumped their bombs on the 16th, adding moderate losses. The 16th was still not done being abused from above as another strike of 63 X B-24J (4 damaged), 28 X B-24D (1 damaged) and 18 X P-51D added heavy casualties. 18 X TBM, 27 X TBF (1 damaged) and 30 X F6F attacked the port doing no damage to any facilities, but they did see a secondary explosions. Shellings were traded during the day and the Japanese had very light losses while the Allies had none.

A sub attack 28 miles W of Pontianak was made by the SS Blackfish. The AK was hit by a torpedo that did heavy damage and caused fires. The sub was then pounded by the 4 DDs for an extended period of time before she finally broke contact. In the afternoon the sub came into contact with an AK under the protection of 4 DDs. The sub penetrated the screen and fed the AK a fish, leaving it burning as she evaded the escorts and vacated the area.

Victoria Point was raided by 55 X B-29 who ran into 14 Franks. A B-29 was shot down and 9 took damage from the fighters and the flak. A Frank went down and 3 were shot up in the running battle. The airfield was heavily damaged, there were a large number of secondary explosions, 2 Myrts, 2 Bettys and a Frances were destroyed and personnel losses were heavy.

Tavoy was raided by 41 X B-25J (1 downed, 4 damaged), 44 X Mosquito FB.VI and 22 X Thunderbolt II who did heavy damage to the airstrip, caused some secondary explosions and inflicted very light casualties.

Krung Thep was bashed by 40 X B-29, 45 X B-24J (1 damaged) and 108 X Liberator VI for very heavy damage to the airfield, an extremely large number of secondary explosions were observed and troop losses were heavy.

Koepang's port was lightly hit by 20 X B-24J who also caused a few secondary explosions.

Cagayan was under the protection of 5 X Zeke, 2 X George, 3 X Tojo, 3 X Tony and 5 X Frank when 2 wayward Hellcats stumbled into them. Neither side was inclined to do battle so the Hellcats departed unscathed. A lone Helldiver attacked a PG but failed to get a hit. 5 Zekes, 2 Georges, 3 Tojos, 3 Tonys and 5 Franks tried to stop the attack, but the Allies had 5 Hellcats and 74 FM-2s on the scene. A Tony and 4 Franks survived the fight, though a Frank was trailing smoke. 5 Wildcats were shot down and the PG managed to damage the dive bomber. Later a Tony and 3 Franks intercepted a TBM and an F6F. The Avenger was damaged before the Allied planes could reach the clouds. A Tony and 3 X Frank were on patrol when 1 X SB2C, 11 X F6F, 78 X FM-2 and 8 X F4F-4 attacked a PG. A Tony and a Frank were shot down, the PG was struck by a bomb and an FM-2 and an F4F-4 were killed.

The IJA 102nd Division, at Cotabato, was hit by 8 X TBF (2 damaged), 141 X TBM (6downed, 52 damaged), 16 X F6F, 29 X FM-2 and 8 X F4F-4. The unit absorbed heavy losses. At the same time 34 X SBD, 56 X SB2C, 68 X TBF (1 damaged), 36 X TBM and 52 X F6F were working over the airstrip to the tune of moderate damage, some fuel tanks exploded, a couple of other secondary explosions were claimed and casualties were heavy. Artillery traded punches and the Allies had moderate losses while the Japanese suffered heavily.

A Dinah was taking photos of the 1st BAF AA Regiment, 19 miles N of Krung Thep, when 7 Thunderbolt IIs drove it off.

The SS Swordfish, 49 miles NW of Ormoc, found a pair of MSWs and hit one of them with 2 torpedoes, sinking it.

“Right you are sarge,” says the guy looking at the book, “It's a Dinah alright.” Sam knows that recognition book inside and out.

The crew of the Palawan has a pool as to when they will weigh anchor to make for Mindanao. A second pool also was formed as to where they will land their cargo, but that one is limited to 6 entrants, one for each possible spot. The former pool is $10 to get in and the second one cost $50.

Slim is tired of picking dirt out of his ears from the shelling that the Japanese are throwing his way. He's getting angrier with each passing day and he doesn't know who he should be madder at, the brass for this mess or the Japanese for making his life a living hell. One of the lads in the platoon snapped and just started muttering nonsensical babble to himself as he wandered around oblivious to the Japanese fire. By some miracle he was unharmed and was taken back to the beach for evacuation.

Combat

A PB2Y spotted AK near Cagayan and reported hitting it. A Japanese PG in the same area was attacked by 18 X TBF, 18 X TBM, 4 X F6F, 65 X FM-2 and 3 X F4F-4. The Japanese intercepted the attackers with 4 X Zeke, 3 X George, 1 X Tojo, 2 X Tony and 6 X Frank a little to late to prevent the vessel being struck by 3 torpedoes, which spelled her doom. 5 FM-2s were destroyed in the battle and 3 others were damaged as the Japanese planes were fended off. 2 Zekes, a George, a Tojo, 2 Tonys and 2 Franks were shot down.

The troops continue to come ashore at Dadjangas, taking extremely heavy casualties from the shore batteries and a DD was hit once. Japanese artillery was virtually ineffective against the Allied troops on the lines. Then a general assault took place breaching the Japanese lines in several spots, thereby reducing the fortifications. Japanese losses were very heavy and the Allies had heavy casualties.

The IJA 100th Division, at Cotabato, was hit by 49 X SB2C (1 downed, 14 damaged), 8 X TBF (1 downed, 2 damaged), 143 X TBM (3 downed, 37 damaged), 33 X F6F, 106 X FM-2 and 8 X F4F-4 for heavy losses. The port was attacked by 9 X TBF. The AA fire damaged 1 plane and a secondary explosion was caused by the attackers along with extremely light casualties. Artillery exchanges cost the Allies negligible casualties and the Japanese moderate losses.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force was futilely attacked by 11 Peggys.

Victoria Point was swept by 23 Mustangs who ran into 7 Franks. The Franks turned tail and ran for the clouds, loosing 1 plane.

Bangkok was swept by 54 X P-38J who dove into a gaggle of 22 X Zeke, 4 X George, 15 X Jack, 1 X Tony, 13 X Frank and 1 X Randy. The Allies lost 4 planes and had 2 others damaged as they shredded the Japanese, destroying 13 Zekes, 4 Georges, 10 Jacks, a Tony, 13 Franks and the Randy. It wasn't a good day to fly for the Japanese pilots.

The SS Sealion, 22 miles NW of Iloilo, found an MSW and promptly hit it with a torpedo. The ship took a heavy list and fire raged as a result of the attack. The target disappeared before the sub departed the area.

Sam sees another Dinah, but today nobody is challenging it's being here. He wonders why these Japanese planes are rarely chased away. Maybe they are, he thinks and he just doesn't get to see it happening. That thought gives him some comfort.

“Relief is on the way so now our job is to hang on here and then join in the attack,” Gunny tells Slim. Slim mutters that it can't happen to soon as the din of the explosions continues unabated.

Dave mentions to Bill that the top Aces in the Pacific are, “LT GT Burgard of the AVG, flying a P-51D, until he went missing and LT M Daley of the 23 FG flying a P-38J. They both have 33 kills.” Bill tells Dave that he's seen these planes, but the Navy fighters are different and sent from heaven for an old sailor like him. Sandy listens to the two of them talking about the war and all she can think of is it ending.

The captain tells Red that the convoy leaves before first light. Red passes the word to Cookie, who already knows as do the rest of the crew so Red tells Lucky who just tilts his head and then walks away. This convoy has gotten the word to move as it's anticipated that Dadjangas will fall in a day, 2 at the most. Of course the Japanese have other ideas on Mindanao.

Tomorrow the Lucky 11 are scheduled to hit Truk. It's a maximum effort raid on the airfield and port. Something about “maximum effort” that irks Gil. He wonders if they'll ever be able to reduce Truk to a worthless piece of nothing.

The “Red Ball Express” was shut down as now the ports of Antwerp and Marseilles are operational.

The RAF dropped a record 5,689 tons of bombs on German lines east of Aachen.

Combat

Dadjangas continued to witness Allied troops landing over the beach and the Japanese inflicted very heavy casualties on them. A naval bombardment by the Old Gals caused light port damage, a couple of secondary explosions and very heavy casualties. The IJA 16th Mixed Brigade was attacked by 24 X B-24J and 27 X P-38J for moderate casualties. A short while later 32 X TBM and 24 X FM-2 attacked, but caused no harm. Once more Japanese artillery failed to cause any losses to the Allied troops already ashore. An Allied assault cut through the Japanese defenses like a hot knife through butter. The Japanese had extremely heavy losses and the Allies had moderate casualties. The base is now in Allied hands and the defeated Japanese units retreated towards Davao.

The SS Gar, 23 miles NW of San Jose, hit an unescorted with her deck gun and 3 fish, which caused the ship to break in two.

Tavoy was attacked by 36 X B-25J (3 damaged), 45 X Mosquito FB.VI (3 damaged) and 23 X Thunderbolt II. The airfield was heavily damaged and casualties were placed at moderate.

Krung Thep was bombed by 44 X B-29, 40 X B-24J (1 damaged) and 118 X Liberator VI (1 damaged) who administered very heavy damage to the airstrip, a huge number of secondary explosions occurred and personnel losses were heavy.

Koepang was struck by 37 X B-24D and the AA fire damaged 9 of them. The port took moderate damage, there were many secondary explosions and casualties were moderate.

At Truk 187 X B-29 ravaged the airfield for very heavy damage, the port took very heavy damage, there were some secondary explosions and troop losses were moderate.

Kwajalein was visited by 34 X PB4Y who caused light damage to the airstrip.

Gili Gili got pounded by 46 X B-17E, 95 X B-24D, 47 X B-24J and 12 X Spitfire VIII. The airstrip was heavily hit as was the port, a large number of secondary explosions were observed and losses were thought to have been moderate.

Lunga was blasted by 54 X B-24J for very heavy port damage, some secondary explosions were reported and personnel losses were very light.

At Cagayan the Japanese shipping came under attack from 1 X SBD, 28 X SB2C, 62 X TBF, 22 X TBM, 54 X F6F, 104 X FM-2 and 8 X F4F-4. The Japanese had 4 X Zeke, 3 X George, 2 X Tojo, 1 X Tony and 11 X Frank in the air only to have them swept aside by the Allied fighters. 8 Franks survived only because they turned tail and made for the clouds. 3 Hellcats and 3 FM-2s were shot down and 1 of each type took damage.

Japanese troop losses appeared to be heavy as a very large number of soldiers took to the water in an effort to survive the carnage. Another strike of 8 X PB4Y and 3 X P-38J appeared , but they turned away having done no damage. A replenished CAP of 3 X Zeke, 2 X George and 6 X Frank ran into a TBM and 2 F6Fs. The Avengers bomb missed and a Frank went down in flames.

The Japanese defenders at Cotabato were jumped on by 4 X SBD, 28 X SB2C, 57 X TBF, 21 X TBM, 47 X F6F, 96 X FM-2, and 7 X F4F-4. The port was lightly damaged, so was the airstrip, there were some secondary explosions and casualties were moderate. Artillery barrages were traded throughout the day with the Japanese sustaining heavy losses and the Allied casualties were light.

Reports of Japanese merchantmen sinking in the waters to the North of Mindanao continue to come in.

The toehold on Mindanao has become a foothold and the Allied intentions are to kick the door in. The Japanese have obliged the Allied planners by throwing so many of their combat formations into a fight that can only result in their elimination. The question is what will the cost be.

The Palawan's convoy now has it's destination, Dadjangas. Red grumbles at losing in the pools about destination and departure dates. If it weren't for gambling and joking around the boredom would be unbearable.

Slim is told by Gunny that help is on the way as Dadjangas has fallen and that the force is strong enough to sweep aside any blocking force the Japanese throw at it. “The Navy has pretty much sealed off the island from Japanese reinforcements and our stuff is pouring in. All we have to do is sit tight and wait for the word and then we'll be kicking some Japanese butts.” Slim gives a grin at the prospect of being able to push the Japanese back. He hopes the help hurries though as Japanese strength facing Allied positions continues to grow daily.

The work to the CL Helena has been completed and her new skipper awaits orders. The XO is chomping at the bit to get back into the war and he's told by the skipper to relax that they'll be off whenever the Navy wishes it.

Bill and Sandy took a hike today and he feels totally relaxed, like there is no war. He knows that in a few weeks he'll be back in it and wonders what the Navy has in store for him. In the meantime he struggles with his feelings for Sandy and what to do about them. Finally he told her that he wants to share his life with her, but he can't marry her until the war is over. She tells him that she doesn't need to wait, but if that's what he wants then she will.

Combat

A PBM spotted an AP at Cagayan and reported a hit. A Japanese AP was attacked by 1 X SBD, 46 X F6F, 103 X FM-2 and 8 X F4F-4. They tried to repel the Allied planes by throwing 6 X Zeke, 2 X George, 2 X Tojo, a Tony and 10 X Frank in their path. The Allied fighters shot down all of the Japanese planes except for a Zeke and 2 Franks at the cost of 2 F6Fs (1 damaged), 8 FM-2s (4 damaged) and a F4F-4 destroyed. The AP was hit by a bomb that did heavy damage and the ship was burning. Japanese troops went into the water.

The SS Sealion, 22 miles NW of Iloilo, was detected by 5 IJN DDs and subjected to a prolonged attack. The sub will attempt to limp to a port. She has moderate systems damage and heavy flooding.

The SS Wahoo, 36 miles W of Toboali, was getting ready to attack 5 DDs when they turned the table on her. A bit later she did manage to attack them and a DD was hammered by 2 torpedo hits that caused very heavy damage and fires. In the afternoon the 4 other DDs gave her a rough time of it. She will cut the patrol short and return to base for repairs as she has light systems damage and light flooding.

Osaka/Kobe was swept by 50 X P-51D who attacked 3 X George, 11 X Jack, 43 X Zero, 33 X Tojo, 8 X Tony, 11 X Frank and 5 X Randy. It was a wild fight that cost 8 Mustangs lost and another damaged. The Japanese suffered the loss of a George, 8 Jacks, 14 Zeros (1 damaged), 12 Tojos, all of the Tonys, 5 Franks (1 damaged) and a Randy.

Koepang was paid a visit by 28 X B-24D who did moderately heavy damage to the port, caused many secondary explosions and inflicted light casualties.

Truk was bombed by 172 X B-29 who tore the place up doing very heavy damage to the airstrip, heavy damage to the port, a couple of fuel explosions were triggered, a few secondary explosions were seen and troop losses were heavy.

Kwajalein was raided by 32 X PB4Y for light damage to the airfield and some secondary explosions were reported.

Gili Gili was blasted by 45 X B-17E, 93 X B-24D, 43 X B-24J, and 12 X Spitfire VIII for heavy airfield damage, light damage to the port, some secondary explosions were claimed and casualties were placed at heavy.

Lunga was raided by 39 X B-24J who managed to heavily damage the port and cause some secondary explosions.

The 56th Division, at Cotabato, was hit by 27 X B-24D (1 downed, 8 damaged), 55 X B-24J (1 downed, 6 damaged) and 17 X P-51D for very heavy losses. A naval bombardment by the Old Gals caused very heavy Japanese casualties. Artillery exchanges did no harm to the Allies, but inflicted heavy Japanese losses.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was bombed by 7 Peggys and took light casualties.

Slim happily watched the Japanese positions getting bombed and shelled. He also prays that the rumors of an overpowering relief force that's on it's way arrives soon. The Japanese not having attacked yet befuddles him the more he thinks about it. “We have such a small area under our control and they seem to have a huge force facing us,” he tells Gunny. “It just doesn't make any sense. In a fight you pounce on a guy when he's weak and exposed.”

“Scuttlebutt has it that we're going to move to an airstrip on Mindanao,” says the line mechanic to Stick while the two of them drink some warm beer. Stick wonders if this is true and if he'll see some Japanese planes.

Four bomb groups pounded Truk and no planes were damaged by the Japanese, but 4 planes were scrapped and 1 crew was lost due to operational causes. Gil is amazed that one of the crews managed to escape from their plane when they crashed on landing. The crew that was lost didn't manage to take off. This war is rapidly turning into a very grim business and they haven't even had to face opposition in the air or heavy flak yet.

Ed huddles with his staff and Phil expresses concerns about the demands being placed on the Old Gals and recommends that fuel, supplies and an AE be placed at Dadjangas to shorten the trips being made by the TFs between the target areas and their replenishment base. Ed tells his staff to get on it immediately knowing that the key element will be the Sea Bees.

Dave was asleep yesterday when Bill and Sandy returned from their hike. When he walks into the kitchen for breakfast he reminds them that hiking at night, especially this late in the year, in the mountains can be dangerous. Sandy smiles at him and gives him a hug and then she says, “If Bill doesn't change his mind we're going to get married as soon as this damned war is over and the Navy let's him have a little time off. Dave face breaks into a big grin and he says that he knew she was a smart girl and her choice proves it and he thumps Bill on the back.

The US 3rd Army crossed the German frontier. Metz is now cut off.

The German hospital ship Tubingen was sunk by Allied planes, accidentally, in the Adriatic. No wounded were on the ship at the time of her sinking and London expressed regrets to the Germans.

Combat

An SB2C Helldiver spotted an AK at Cagayan and reported a hit. Later another SB2C Helldiver spotted what was presumed to have been the same AK and reported a hit. A CAP of 5 Zekes, 5 Georges, 2 Tojos, a Tony and 5 Franks was up when 30 X B-24J and 36 X P-38J arrived. The fighters attacked and the Lightnings went to work protecting the bombers. 2 Georges, a Tojo, the Tony and 2 Franks were shot down. 2 Zekes and a Frank were damaged while the Americans lost 5 Lightnings and another took damage. 2 of the bombers were damaged by the AA fire. The port was virtually undamaged, but there were many secondary explosions and troop losses were extremely light. A reduced CAP of 3 Zekes, a George, a Tojo and 2 Franks were overwhelmed by the next wave of American planes. 58 X B-24J (1 damaged), 34 X B-24D (1 damaged) and 20 X P-51D Mustang roared in and the Mustangs made short work of the Japanese CAP, destroying all of them at no cost to themselves. The airfield was heavily damaged, there were some secondary explosions, 2 Georges, a Tojo, 16 Franks, 5 Jacks and 2 Tonys were left burning on the ground and casualties were moderate. A Zeke, a George and a Frank were all that stood between an SBD, 34 Hellcats, 76 FM-2s and 8 F4F-4s and an AP. The Frank escaped, but the Zeke and George were shot down. 3 FM-2s and a F4F-4 were downed and the ship was missed. In the afternoon an SBD Dauntless has spotted an AK, reported hitting it and watching it sink. This was thought to have been a different ship from the one attacked in the morning.

Some of the Old Gals conducted a naval bombardment of Cotabato doing little other than causing light casualties. At the same time 4 X SBD, 81 X SB2C (2 damaged), 70 X TBF, 167 X TBM (2 damaged), 33 X F6F, 96 X FM-2, and 6 X F4F-4 did moderate damage to the airstrip, moderate damage to the port, a fuel tank blew, there were many secondary explosions and personnel losses were moderately heavy. A Japanese artillery bombardment caused very light Allied losses and the Allied response inflicted heavy casualties on the Japanese. The IJA 4th Division was hit by 48 X TBM and 7 FM-2. An Avenger was destroyed and 21 took damage as the Japanese unit had moderate losses.

The SS Sennet, was about 27 miles E of Marcus Island when her radar detected a surface contact. The sub intercepted and attacked a lone AP clobbering it with 3 hits from the deck gun and 2 torpedoes. The ship was heavily damaged, burning and troops were jumping into the water.

Tavoy was raided by 42 X B-25J and 10 X Spitfire VIII. The airstrip was lightly damaged and there was a single secondary explosion. Another wave of planes appeared a little later and the 34 X B-25J (3 damaged), 42 X Mosquito FB.VI and 22 X Thunderbolt II added moderate damage to the airfield, another secondary explosion and light personnel losses.

Bangkok still stubbornly sends up fighters to face the Allied sweeps and today 41 X Zeke, 9 X George, 31 X Jack, 2 X Tony, 14 X Frank and 5 X Randy were served up for 66 X P-38J. 26 Zekes, 6 Georges, 13 Jacks (3 damaged), both Tonys, 12 Franks and all of the Randys were hastily disposed of. The Allies lost 4 Lightnings and 5 were damaged.

Krung Thep underwent a bombing by 40 X B-29, 48 X B-24J (1 damaged) and 129 X Liberator VI (2 damaged). The airfield took very heavy damage, there were a huge number of secondary explosions claimed and casualties were placed at heavy.

Koepang 's port was raided by 24 X B-24D and the AA fire damaged a pair of them. No facilities were hit, but a few secondary explosions were observed.

Kwajalein had light damage to it's airstrip done by 22 X PB4Y who also accounted for some secondary explosions.

Gili Gili was blasted by 46 X B-17E, 91 X B-24D, 41 X B-24J, and 12 X Spitfire VIII for heavy damage to the airfield, light port damage, many secondary explosions were reported and personnel losses were light.

Phil ponders the fuel stocks and the ravenous thirst of the Old Gals and wonders how much longer they will be able to continue to lend their muscle to the operations ongoing at Mindanao. He has raised holy hell with the rest of the staff, accusing them of dragging their feet and Ed happened to overhear the heated exchange of agitated voices so he entered the room and got to the bottom of things. “Gentlemen I don't care about anything other than getting the job done so we can defeat the Japanese. That is our job, nothing else. If there is a problem with doing your job then I'm sure that another posting can be obtained for you. I want you to shake the trees, move heaven and earth if need be, I want Dadjangas up and running for us ASAP.” Ed leaves and knows that he needs to make some changes as soon as possible, otherwise Phil is likely to hand some of them their heads and he agrees.

Gil has decided that as quickly as he can return to the States after the fighting is over he'll go to Pittsburgh, have Elaine arrange a wedding and then he'll go to Brooklyn to see his family and make the announcement. He's still trying to figure out what a pretty girl like Elaine, who comes from a family with money would want with a poor boy from Brooklyn. He sits down on his cot and starts a letter to Elaine.

Pearl has a fever and Sylvia immediately carts her daughter off to the hospital where the doctor examines the baby and pronounces that there is no reason for worry. He then asks about Pete and Sylvia tells him that her husband is kept busy by the hotel, pub and family.

Combat

The SS Tarpon was on patrol near Boac when she was forced to dive by 5 X DD who appeared suddenly. After a violent depth charge attack she gave them the slip. A few hours later she was checking to see if it was clear to surface, but instead spotted 5 X PC. CDR Wallace decided to attack and they hit a PC with a torpedo, causing catastrophic damage and fires, sinking it. She then tried to depart the area. The attack was a mistake as the DDs appeared once again and they pinned the sub's location, giving her a horrible pounding. The sub was forced to surface and with moderate systems damage and catastrophic flooding the order to abandon was given. Tarpon's skipper gave the order to scuttle the boat and that was the last anybody ever saw him. The Japanese DDs moved off and a few hours late the SS Tullibee arrived and began plucking men from the water.

The SS S-30, near Cebu Island, located and attacked an AP. She scored 2 torpedo hits on her target, leaving it heavily damaged and on fire. Recon flights later confirmed that the ship had indeed been sunk.

Tavoy was struck by 38 X B-25J, 46 X Mosquito FB.VI (2 damaged) and 22 X Thunderbolt II for heavy damage to the airfield, a couple of secondary explosions and extremely light casualties.

Andaman Island was bombed by 133 X B-29 and the AA fire damaged 6 of the big birds. The airstrip took heavy damage, there were some secondary explosions seen, 10 X Frances and 2 X Grace were destroyed and personnel losses were light.

Bangkok was swept by 22 X P-51D who took on 24 X Zeke, 6 X George, 20 X Jack, a Tony, 13 X Frank and 2 X Randy. Their utter lack of respect for the Japanese pilots resulted in some sloppy flying in the battle and 5 Mustangs were shot down and another was damaged. 13 Zekes (1 damaged), 2 Georges, 8 Jacks, 6 Franks and a Randy were destroyed.

Krung Thep was hit by 38 X B-29, 41 X B-24J and 129 X Liberator VI (1 damaged) for very heavy airfield damage, a very large number of secondary explosions were claimed and casualties were heavy.

Koepang was visited by 39 X B-24J and the flak damaged 10 of them. The port took moderate damage, there were a few secondary explosions and troop losses were light.

Lautem was the target for 144 X B-25J, 21 X P-40N and 18 X Kittyhawk III who did light damage to the port and claimed a secondary explosion.

Cagayan was being protected by a Zeke and a Frank when 17 unescorted B-24Ds appeared. The Japanese fighters didn't attack, but the AA damaged 3 of the bombers. The airfield was moderately damaged, a secondary explosion was seen, 3 Franks and 3 Jacks were destroyed and personnel losses were extremely light. Later the same Zeke and Frank were destroyed when 12 X PB4Y and 27 X P-38J showed up to attack the pair of AKs in the harbor. AA fire damaged a bomber and an AK was struck 7 times for heavy damage and fires that caused it to sink while the other AK was hit once and was burning. Then 1 X SBD, 40 X F6F, 58 X FM-2 and 4 X F4F-4 appeared, but the dive bomber missed.

Kwajalein was bombed by 28 X PB4Y. The airfield was lightly damaged and a secondary explosion was reported.

Gili Gili was hammered by 44 X B-17E, 84 X B-24D, 33 X B-24J and 12 X Spitfire VIII. The port took moderate damage, the airstrip was heavily damaged, there were some secondary explosions and casualties were moderate.

Lunga had it's port attacked by 40 X B-24J. Light damage was done to it and there were some secondary explosions.

The 5th New Chinese Corps had light casualties from an attack made by 13 Peggys.

A Dinah was snooping on the 1st BAF AA Regiment, 21 miles N of Krung Thep, when 5 Thunderbolt IIs suddenly appeared and downed it.

Cotabato was attacked by 4 X SBD, 80 X SB2C, 70 X TBF, 173 X TBM (3 damaged) and 4 X F6F. The airfield was moderately damaged, the port was lightly damaged, there were many secondary explosions and troop losses were moderate. The IJA 102nd Division was attacked by 48 X TBM and 7 X FM-2. 3 TBMs were downed and 19 took damage while the Japanese had moderate losses. Japanese artillery was busy, but the Allied troops sustained very light casualties. The Allied guns accounted for moderate Japanese losses.

“Has anybody other than me noticed that there seem to be more Japs here than before?” Sam asks nobody in particular, but loud enough for the visiting company CO to hear him. There has been an increase in Japanese probes, especially at night, in the past couple of days and Slim keeps telling his lads to keep on their toes and anybody who is on guard duty damned well better not nod off or they'll have to deal with him and he'll make the Japs look like pansies.

Memboro was occupied by the Japanese

|The SS Wahoo, 83 miles E of Banjarmasin, was heading for port with light systems damage from an earlier encounter with the IJN when she spotted and attacked 2 DDs. One of them was struck by 2 torpedoes, setting it ablaze and doing heavy damage. Later the Wahoo was back on her base course when she spotted some Japanese ships 23 miles S of Balikpapan. She attacked an AK under escort by 4 DDs and the target was hit by a torpedo, but the sub underwent a violent attack from the escorts. The sub now has heavy systems damage and heavy flooding. The issue is in doubt as they try for Morotai.

Tavoy was hit by 47 X B-25J and 10 X Spitfire VIII. AA fire damaged 7 of the bombers. The airfield took moderate damage, a couple of secondary explosions were seen and casualties were very light.

Bangkok underwent a fighter sweep made by 66 X P-38J who swooped in on 21 X Zeke, 7 X George, 22 X Jack, 1 X Tony, 10 X Frank and 1 X Randy. 16 Zekes, 5 Georges, 20 Jacks, the Tony, 9 Franks and the Randy were blasted out of the air at the cost of 4 lost Lightnings and 4 others damaged.

Sam is disgusted as another Dinah drones by. “There's no challenge in spotting and identifying the same damned type of plane all the time,” he complains out loud to himself. He decides that he will start a rigorous exercise program for himself and his squad to help pass the time. Of course when he mentions it the guys moan and groan as they'd rather just relax.

Slim crouches in the bottom of his hole listening to the outgoing artillery rounds. Gunny told him that the LT was upset with his mouthing off yesterday and Slim replied that he doesn't care what the CO thinks. He finished with, “After all what can he do to me that the Japs aren't doing?” Gunny laughed, slapped Slim on the back and told him to behave himself and to keep an eye on our hosts. Slim wonders how many Japanese are facing their little toehold.

Reports from air patrols state that Japanese ships in the Mindanao area continue to sink while attempting to flee towards safe refuge.

The Palawan rests at Morotai, awaiting orders. Red is relaxing listening to the radio when Cookie joins him. “Do you think that we'll ever get back to Pearl?” Cookie ponders the question, shrugs and shuts the hatch so he can light up a smoke.

Slim feels like he's ready to snap. The brass should turn them loose or maybe he should start digging a tunnel towards the Japanese lines. Last night one of the lads was killed as he left his hole to relieve himself. Damned fool knew better than to leave his hole at night, thinks Slim. His existence has been a living hell since they came ashore and it hasn't improved since then. There are constant explosions, machine gun fire keeps everyone's heads down and then the Navy shows up and the ground shakes. He is glad that he's not Japanese as it must be even worse for them.

Pete is thinking of Thanksgiving and pushes it out of his head as he's an Australian now. He lives here in Brisbane, has a family in Brisbane, but he still thinks like an American. He supposes that in time that will change. Milt pops into the pub and pours himself a pint while saying hello to Pete who is enjoying a cup of tea., lost in thought. Milt's arrival snaps him back to the here and now so he gets busy doing what needs to be done.

The RAF made a second breach in the Dortmund-Ems Canal.

Combat

An ASW attack 619 miles NE of Pearl Harbor was made by the convoy escorts on a Japanese sub that tried to penetrate the screen. A large number of hits were claimed, but no confirmed kill was awarded.

Tavoy was attacked by 2 waves of aircraft today. The first was 16 X B-25J (1 damaged), 11 X Thunderbolt II and 9 X Spitfire VIII who did light damage to the airstrip. The second strike package was made up of 36 X B-25J (4 damaged), 31 X Mosquito FB.VI and 11 X Thunderbolt II. They added moderate damage to the airfield, caused a secondary explosion and there were extremely light casualties.

Bangkok was swept by 62 X P-38J who came in blazing away at the 19 X Zeke, 5 X George, 16 X Jack, 1 X Tony, 9 X Frank and 2 X Randy that were up. The Japanese pilots and planes were totally outclassed as they only managed to shoot down 3 Lightnings and damage another while their losses were horrific. Only 6 Zekes and a Jack survived the lopsided battle and then only because they ran for the clouds.

Krung Thep got clobbered by Allied aircraft as 46 X B-29, 9 X B-24J and 128 X Liberator VI unloaded on the airfield causing very heavy damage, a huge number of secondary explosions and moderate personnel losses.

Cotabato's airfield was moderately damaged, the port lightly and there were a very large number of secondary explosions from 5 X SBD, 84 X SB2C (1 damaged), 64 X TBF, 179 X TBM and 6 X F6F. Allied artillery inflicted moderate casualties on the Japanese.

British commanders are very concerned with the large number of units detected at Bangkok. Any thoughts of an offensive will be shelved, but they need to know the composition of all of these units.

Gil sits on his bunk and sighs as he thinks of tomorrow's maximum effort against Truk's airfield and port. One of the guys jokingly says that all of the missions are minimum effort for Gil as he sleeps on them. “Yeah, if he was on a B-17 he'd be awake and manning a gun. He sure does have it easy,” Hoppy says as he pats Gil on the back. None of this bothers Gil as he knows everyone on Jake's Jalopy has their job to do and they all do their jobs well. They all have confidence in one another that come from combat.

Bill and Sandy went into town with Dave and they strolled around while Dave picked up some parts that he's been waiting for. The made a stop at the Post Office, which was closed, but the Postmaster stopped by and gave Sandy 3 letters and Sandy introduced him to Bill. Life in a small town where everybody knows each other is sure different from the cities, thinks Bill. Bill asked her who the letters were from and she replied, “From my beau. He's off fighting the war. He's in the Navy and is always at some exotic port with a girl on each arm.” He laughs and that night they read the letters together. For Bill he thinks of what was happening when they were written. When they get back he helps her in the kitchen when she gets busy with the finishing touches on their Thanksgiving dinner.

Combat

A naval bombardment of Cotabato was conducted by Ed's Old Gals. The Japanese had very heavy casualties as a result of it. Then the base was the object of attention for 45 X B-24D, 79 X B-24J (2 damaged) and 23 X P-51D who hit the airfield for heavy damage, the port for light damage, a very large number of secondary explosions were reported and casualties were light. The IJA 56th Division was jumped by 31 X TBM (1 downed, 29 damaged) and 15 X P-47D for light losses. Allied artillery accounted for heavy Japanese casualties.

Near Roxas the SS Tullibee tracked 4 PCs and managed to achieve a favorable position from which to launch an attack. A pair of fish slammed into a PC, sinking it, and the sub slipped away undetected. In the afternoon 5 X DD found her and gave the sub a rough time. The Tullibee will now make for Palau with moderate systems damage and moderate flooding.

Andaman Island was bombed by 37 X B-29 and the airfield was moderately damaged, a secondary explosion was claimed, 4 X Frances were destroyed and personnel losses were moderate.

Bangkok was swept again, this time by 57 X P-38J. 27 X Zeke, 5 X George, 20 X Jack, 7 X Tony, 22 X Frank and 3 X Randy opposed the Lightnings and destroyed 8 of them, damaging 6 others. This came at the price of 15 Zekes, a George, 13 Jacks, 5 Tonys, 15 Franks and all of the Randys being downed. The Japanese had a reduced CAP of 10 X Zeke, 4 X George, 2 X Jack, a Tony and 4 X Frank aloft when 44 X B-29, 32 X B-24J, 123 X Liberator VI, 48 X Mosquito FB.VI, 68 X P-47D and 44 X P-38J arrived on the scene. The Allied fighter escort went to work and decimated the CAP while losing a Jug and having another damaged. The AA fire was heavy and accurate as 2 B-29s, 3 B-24Js, 15 Liberator VI (1 downed) and a Mosquito FB.VI (1 downed) were damaged. The airfield took extremely heavy damage, the port was heavily damaged, there were a very large number of secondary explosions seen, 4 Zekes, 2 Georges, 9 Jacks, 3 Tonys, 4 Franks, an Irving, 2 Dinahs and a Frances were wrecked and casualties were extremely heavy.

Cagayan was hit by 30 X B-24J and 29 X P-38J. The flak damaged 4 of the bombers as the airstrip took moderate damage, 9 Franks and a Tony were destroyed and troop losses were very light.

Truk was blasted by 192 X B-29 for very heavy damage to the airstrip, very heavy damage to the port, a fuel explosion was observed, a couple of other secondary explosions were seen and troop losses were heavy.

Gili Gili was struck by 44 X B-24D, 36 X B-24J and 12 X Spitfire VIII for moderate airfield damage, moderate port damage, some secondary explosions and moderate casualties.

Rabaul was bombed by 39 X B-17E and 40 X B-24D. The airfield was moderately damaged, the port had light damage, there were a few secondary explosions and personnel losses were light.

The Wahoo continues her brave battle against the sea, but it's still a long, long way to go.

Today Slim's spirits are sky high. He has no voice left from cheering on the ships, planes and artillery fire that poured death and destruction on the Japanese. He feels that as long as there are days like this the Japanese won't be able to launch a successful attack on his position. He prays that it doesn't rain and prevent the planes from flying. Gunny drops by and Slim asks, “Where the hell are those reinforcements that are supposed to save us from all of those Japs over there that want me dead?” Gunny tells him that they should arrive soon.

Gil is tired despite sleeping through a good part of the flight home. He got to sit in Ham's position for part of the flight and marveled at the view it afforded. After being debriefed the Lucky 11 wander off to various spots and Gil heads for chow and then back to the hut to write a letter to Elaine.

Stick isn't feeling very good so he was scratched from today's flying roster. He moans at the thought that with his luck Japanese planes will appear. “Don't worry, it's top secret that you're not flying today so the Japs won't be coming this way,” jokes one of the guys. Stick smiles, but his obsession with bagging any type of enemy plane is getting the best of him.

Combat

Tavoy was raided by 38 X B-29 (5 damaged) and 13 X Thunderbolt II who caused moderate damage to the port, some secondary explosions and very light casualties.

Andaman Island was hit by 43 X B-25J (2 damaged) and 47 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 damaged). The port took light damage, there were a few secondary explosions and casualties were negligible.

Krung Thep had it's day ruined by 31 X B-24J and 109 X Liberator VI (5 damaged). The damage to the airstrip was very heavy, there were numerous secondary explosions and personnel losses were heavy.

Gili Gili was bombed by 33 X B-24J and 10 X Spitfire VIII who did light damage to the airfield and triggered a few secondary explosions.

Rabaul was hit by 34 X B-24D for light port damage, a couple of secondary explosions and very light casualties.

The IJA 56th Division, at Cotabato, was struck by 32 X TBM and 15 X P-47D. An Avenger was downed and 27 others were damaged while the Japanese had very light troop losses. At virtually the same time 7 X SBD, 70 X SB2C, 60 X TBF, 182 X TBM and 7 X F6F caused moderate damage to the airstrip, moderate damage to the port, a large number of secondary explosions and moderate casualties. Allied artillery lobbed shells into the Japanese positions causing heavy losses.

The 5th New Chinese Corps had no losses despite the 7 Peggys trying their best.

Flights to Paramushiro Jima were intercepted by Thunderbolts based out of Petropavlask.

The SS Wahoo is trying for Menado, but the flooding is severe and though an AS will be on hand to lend it's support, the question is can the sub make the last 293 miles?

Slim continues to be happily entertained by the airstrikes on the Japanese even though he knows that they are just a pin **** to the Japanese. He wonders when his next hat meal will be and if he'll ever get the crud off of his body. The Japanese artillery has had little effect since the first days of the landings, but he hates being showered with dirt.

Bill sits in the kitchen watching Sandy preparing leftovers for today's lunch. His mind drifts off to the war and he knows that in less than 2 weeks he'll be gone again. She notices that he's lost in his thoughts and walks over to give him a hug.

Gene scratches his head and marvels that the ship's plates weren't just buckled from the collision. He checks and sees that everything they need for the job is on hand and when his crew arrives he turns them loose. His thoughts run to yesterday's holiday meal and knows what's going to be on the table when he gets home tonight. The thoughts of lasagna, sausage, turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, cranberries and so many other things brings a smile to his face. Combat

Nanning was swept by 40 X P-38J who encountered 6 X Zeke, 18 X Jack, 37 X Tojo, 11 X Nick and 14 X Tony. Despite the numerical advantage better pilots in better planes prevailed as the Japanese lost 2 Zekes, 6 Jacks, 17 Tojos (2 damaged), 9 Nicks and 10 Tonys. The Allies had 3 Lightnings destroyed and another took some damage.

Tavoy had it's port lightly damaged by 25 X B-29 and 11 X Thunderbolt II who also caused a very large number of secondary explosions and extremely light casualties. Another 33 X B-29 attacked a while later and did moderate damage to the airfield, triggered some secondary explosions and there were moderate personnel losses.

Andaman Island was bombed by 44 X B-25J (2 damaged) and 44 X Mosquito FB.VI. The port was lightly hit and there was a secondary explosion.

A fighter sweep of Bangkok was made by 67 X P-47D. They dove in on 12 X Zeke, 4 X George, 12 X Jack, 2 X Tony, 7 X Frank and 2 X Randy. 9 Zekes, 2 Georges, 10 Jacks, both Tonys, 6 Franks and both of the Randys were swept from the sky at a cost of 4 Thunderbolts lost and a pair were damaged.

Krung Thep was visited by 31 X B-24J (1 damaged) and 106 X Liberator VI (1 damaged) who caused heavy damage to the airfield, a huge number of secondary explosions and heavy casualties.

Koepang was struck by 48 X B-24J (8 damaged) and 48 X B-24D (1 damaged) for heavy damage to the port and many secondary explosions were reported.

Lautem was bombed by 141 X B-25J, 12 X P-40N and 22 X Kittyhawk III. The airstrip was heavily damaged, the port took moderate damage and there were many secondary explosions seen.

Davao was hit by 16 X TBM-3d and 15 X P-47D. An Avenger was destroyed and 4 more took damage. The airfield was very lightly damaged, there was a secondary explosion and troop losses were light. Later 78 X B-24J (5 damaged), 38 X B-24D and 20 X P-51D attacked and did heavy damage to the airfield, caused many secondary explosions and casualties were heavy.

Cotabato was attacked by 26 X B-24J and 30 X P-38J for moderate airfield damage and a secondary explosion was observed. 7 X SBD, 68 X SB2C, 52 X TBF, 174 X TBM and 7 X F6F caused light airfield and port damage and some secondary explosions. Allied artillery chipped in by adding heavy Japanese casualties.

Gili Gili underwent an air attack made by 41 X B-24J, 44 X B-24D and 11 X Spitfire VIII who scored light damage to the port, moderately heavy airfield damage, some secondary explosions and extremely light personnel losses.

Rabaul was hit by 39 X B-17E and 43 X B-24D for moderate port damage, moderate damage to the airstrip, a couple of secondary explosions and moderate casualties.

The 5th New Chinese Corps, still frozen in place, was paid a visit by 10 X Peggy who did no harm.

Within 157 miles of port the order to scuttle was given on the Wahoo as the pumps failed and the water continued to rise.

Combat

Near Roxas the SS Swordfish managed to ambush 5 DDs, hitting one of them with a torpedo, causing fires to break out. The other 4 destroyers tried and failed to pin the sub's location.

Tavoy was attacked by 45 X B-25J (4 damaged) and 26 X Thunderbolt II who managed to do heavy damage to the airfield, trigger a secondary explosion and cause very light casualties. Another strike was made by 27 X B-29 and 26 X Thunderbolt II and they inflicted light damage to the port and there were many secondary explosions.

Andaman Island was raided by 46 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 damaged) and 45 X B-25J (1 damaged). Though no facilities were damaged there were a couple of secondary explosions and very light personnel losses.

Krung Thep was swept by 32 X Spitfire VIII, but they found no opposition. Then 81 X Liberator VI (4 damaged) and 25 X B-24J did moderately heavy damage to the airstrip, they claimed a large number of secondary explosions and casualties were very light.

Allied artillery accounted for moderately heavy Japanese losses.

Sam watches the Sea Bees working on the island's defenses and the airfield. He amazed at how they've transformed the place. Then he wonders at how they manage to do all of this and still make the odds and ends that they sell to the troops.

Work is going smoothly and Gene is more than pleased. His crew has gotten the reputation that they can handle just about any job thrown at them. The company even gave each man a bonus along with last week's pay. One of the guys was joking about becoming the richest man in the cemetery, but that didn't go over to well as one of the men recently lost a son somewhere in France.

Bill and Sandy are both starting to feel the impending departure and she asks him once again if he's sure about waiting until after the war to get married. He insists that is the best thing as he's afraid of making her a widow, but he won't say that.

Slim was watching the Allied planes going overhead and found himself wishing there were more of them. The promised reinforcements are still nowhere to be found and there are more than enough Japanese pinning them to their precarious toehold.

The Red Army broke through the German and Hungarian lines to take Mohacs.

The German ship Rigel was sunk and over 2,570 drowned, mostly POWs.

Ed's Old Gals opened the day with a naval bombardment of Cotabato, causing heavy casualties. Next up were 37 X PB4Y, 26 X B-24J and 30 X P-38J who accounted for moderate damage to the airstrip, a couple of secondary explosions and negligible troop losses. Another strike of 12 X PB4Y, 26 X B-24D, 61 X B-24J and 16 X P-51D caused moderately heavy damage to the airfield, light damage to the port and a couple of secondary explosions. The IJA 4th Division was jumped by 46 X TBM and 8 X FM-2. 2 Avengers went down and 40 were damaged as they only managed to inflict negligible losses on the unit. Next up was a strike made by 7 X SBD, 70 X SB2C, 59 X TBF, 181 X TBM and 7 X F6F who were able to lightly damage the airfield and port, trigger a few secondary explosions and inflict extremely light casualties. An Allied attack on the Japanese defenses was made and both sides suffered very heavily and no ground was gained.

Tokyo was swept by 54 X P-51D and as expected the Japanese gave battle with a very large gaggle of fighters consisting of 15 X Jack, 23 X Tony, 54 X Frank and 16 X Randy. 10 Mustangs were lost in the fight and 4 more were damaged. The Japanese lost 10 Jacks, 6 Tonys, 18 Franks and 5 Randys.

Tavoy was hit by 39 X B-25J (5 damaged), 12 X Thunderbolt II and 12 X Spitfire VIII who did light damage to the airfield, caused a couple of secondary explosions and inflicted very light personnel losses. Krung Thep was paid a visit by 104 X Liberator VI (3 damaged) and 26 X B-24J. The airstrip took very heavy damage, there were many secondary explosions reported and casualties were moderate.

Davao was attacked by 12 X TBM-3d (4 damaged) and 14 X P-47D who did very light damage to the airfield and caused extremely light personnel losses.

Kwajalein was bombed by 34 X PB4Y for light airfield damage.

The 1st BAF AA Regiment, 19 miles N of Krung Thep damaged a snooping Dinah.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force had no losses from the 11 Peggys who hit it.

Wasile was again swept by 14 X F6F despite no orders given to do that.

Japanese transports flying in and out of Cagayan were intercepted by some P-38Js.

Slim can't believe that he was wounded. He was ordered by a Navy Corpsman to the rear to be treated. The main concern was the danger of infection and once the doctor removed the shrapnel and patched him up Slim announced that he was off back to his unit. When he returned the lads were happy to see him as they hold him in high regard and don't want to lose him. Late Gunny comes by and looks Slim over and asks how he's doing. Slim said, “swell, I love fighting a war in a place nobody ever heard of and being outnumbered.” Gunny smiles and tells him that help really is on the way.

Bill and Sandy spent the day at the garage with Dave. Sandy and Bill busied themselves doing an inventory of parts laying around. Dave muttered that he didn't even know that he had that here on more than one occasion. The day went quickly and Bill announced that bringing some semblance of order to the garage would make it a more efficient operation. Sandy laughed and said that her father won't change his ways and Dave just suggested that they go to the house and see about something to eat.

The US 9th Army reached the Rohr today.

The SS Crevalle, 219 miles N of Marcus Island, attacked a lone AP hitting it with 5 rounds from the deck gun and 2 torpedoes. The ship was heavily damaged and burning. As the sub departed the target dove to the bottom, stern first.

The Old Gals conducted another naval bombardment of Cotabato causing moderate casualties. Then the base was struck by 45 X PB4Y, 29 X B-24J and 29 X P-38J for heavy damage to the airfield, a couple of secondary explosions and very light casualties. Another strike of 10 X PB4Y, 34 X B-24D, 73 X B-24J and 17 X P-51D added heavy damage to the airfield, light damage to the port and some secondary explosions. The IJA 56th Division was attacked by 43 X TBM (3 downed, 31 damaged) and 8 X FM-2 for moderate casualties. Then 8 X SBD, 73 X SB2C, 59 X TBF, 180 X TBM and 7 X F6F Added to the mayhem with moderate airfield damage, light port damage, some secondary explosions and very light troop losses. The Allied relief force crossed the river with each side taking appalling losses, but the Allies now have a very powerful force in place.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was hit by 7 Peggys who did no damage as the LCU is almost nonexistent.

“See, I told you help was on the way and it would arrive soon,” said Gunny to Slim. Some of the lads happily give up their holes to and Army unit and they bark at the soldiers, one of whom muttered something about those crazy Marines. Before leaving the lads managed to pilfer some of the abundant supplies the Army brought with them.

Bill can't help but wonder what he'll be handed as his time with Sandy is drawing to a close. Sandy was notably quieter today as she has Bill's pending departure tearing at her. She has promised herself that she won't make a scene, but the thought of his leaving hurts.

The enlisted members of the Lucky 11 are huddled around a map and looking to see how far away Mindanao is. Hoppy emits a low whistle and they all agree that it'll take lots of gas to get them there and back. “Gil, you'll have lots of time for napping,” Hoppy says.

The Russians crossed the Danube into SW Hungary today.

Combat

The SS Pilotfish, 23 miles E of Jambi, attacked 4 PGs and a PC. She hit one of the PGs with a torpedo and the other Japanese vessels hunted, found and pounded her for a while.

The SS Cod, near Roxas, played hide and seek with 4 IJN DDs during the morning. After a few hours the sub managed to hunt the hunters and hit a DD with 2 fish. She was in turn subjected to a violent depth charge attack that lasted about an hour.

Davao was attacked by 6 X TBM-3d and 13 X P-47D for very light airfield damage. An Avenger was damaged by ground fire.

Kwajalein was raided by 29 X PB4Y who did light damage to the airstrip, caused a secondary explosion and inflicted very light casualties.

Gili Gili was bombed by 43 X B-17E, 44 X B-24D and 12 X Spitfire VIII. The airfield took very heavy damage, there were some secondary explosions and troop losses were moderate.

Rabaul was hit by 44 X B-24D and 39 X B-24J for light port damage, moderate damage to the airstrip, a secondary explosion was claimed and a Dave was destroyed.

Cotabato saw an Allied armored unit cross the river today with both sides taking heavy losses.

Slim's unit has been pulled off the line for the men to get some rest and a hot meal. He has no illusions as he poked Gunny in the ribs and says, “See they're fattening us up for the slaughter.” Gunny laughed and told him that the Corps never had any other intentions for them from the time they hit Boot Camp.

Another meeting has finally ended and the new timetable for the taking of Mindanao has been revised to the beginning of January. It compresses the time the Navy has for moving it's assets for the next four operations and now two of them look to be getting delayed a little longer than wanted.

Dave has a copy of yesterday's newspaper and he finds a story about the top aces in the PTO. “Capt LP Manbeck of the 23 FG has 40 kills, Lt N Jennings of the 33 FG has 39 and Lt Daley of the 23 FG has 37. They all fly Lightnings,” he says. “How come the Navy doesn't get in on the top aces?” he asks Bill. Bill finishes chewing his mouthful of flapjacks and tells him that the Japanese are afraid of Navy pilots. Then he explains that the Navy's mission is different than the Army Air Corps. Sandy scoops a stack of flapjacks onto Dave’s plate and he asks her for some more coffee.

Combat

A PB4Y Liberator spotted an AK at Tarakan and reported a hit. Later on the Japanese ships were attacked by 28 X PB4Y and flak downed 1 of them. A DD took 10 bomb hits and was reported to be a burning hulk that was sinking. Another 6 PB4Ys roared in a short time later and hit 2 AKs with 2 bombs apiece leaving both on fire and 1 of them was heavily damaged.

The SS Gar was near Roxas when 3 PCs tried to pin her location. The sub managed to elude her would be attackers.

Koepang was bombed by 47 X B-24D and 47 X B-24J who did moderate damage to the port, caused some secondary explosions and inflicted very light casualties.

Lautem was struck by 116 X B-25J, 15 X P-40N and 20 X Kittyhawk III for heavy airfield damage and a couple of secondary explosions.

Davao was visited by 143 X B-29 and AA fire damaged 7 of them. The airfield was heavily damaged, the port moderately, a couple of fuel explosions and a large number of other secondary explosions were observed while troop losses were heavy.

Gili Gili was attacked by 42 X B-17E, 43 X B-24D and 12 X Spitfire VIII for very heavy airfield damage, a few secondary explosions and moderately light casualties.

Rabaul was bombed by 42 X B-24D and 38 X B-24J for moderate damage to the airstrip, light damage to the port, a single secondary explosions was seen and personnel losses were light.


The 5th New Chinese Corps had very light losses from 7 Peggys.

Bangkok was swept by 54 X P-38J who met 30 X Zeke, 10 X George, 20 X Jack, 4 X Tony, 14 X Frank and 5 X Randy. It was a furball and in the confusion the Allies lost 2 Lightnings and another pair were damaged. The Japanese were ravaged for 23 Zekes, 6 Georges, 14 Jacks, 4 Tonys, 14 Franks and 5 Randys destroyed.

Cotabato was hit by 10 X SBD, 63 X SB2C, 54 X TBF, 177 X TBM and 10 X F6F for moderate damage to the airstrip and port, some secondary explosions were reported and casualties were light. The IJA 56th Division was jumped by 41 X TBM Avenger and a Hellcat. The ground fire was heavy and accurate as 2 Avengers were lost and 29 more were damaged. The Japanese had moderate casualties. Allied artillery accounted for light Japanese losses

Kwajalein was raided by 32 PB4Ys who did light damage to the airfield.

Japanese flights to and from Paramushiro Jima were intercepted.

Gil and the rest of the Lucky 11 are exhausted from the long flight to and from Mindanao. After the debriefing they are informed that they will fly the same mission again tomorrow. The guys are shocked to hear that they are supposed to fly missions at such great distances on back to back days. Donny says, “There must be a real problem there that they need us again so soon.”

With less than a week to go before Bill has to report in Sandy is stressed. They go for a hike even though it's bitterly cold. As they're hiking a wind picks up and then snow starts to fall. They made a beeline back to the house and she made coffee. Dave magically appeared and smiled as he filled a mug.

Stalin paces as the meeting go on. He wants to attack the Japanese, but to do so would be folly in the winter. “Soon the whole world will learn to fear us,” he announces. “The Germans are going to fight to the bitter end and that is good so we can kill the vermin. We will honor our commitment to our American Allies and of course anything we take from the Japanese will become ours. I will not see the Rodina be cheated.” With that he stalks out of the meeting leaving his generals to do their jobs.

Tavoy was hit by 26 X B-25J and 9 X Spitfire VIII for light damage to the airfield and some secondary explosions were seen Next up were 34 X B-29 (3 damaged), 45 X Mosquito FB.VI (4 damaged) and 24 X Thunderbolt II who added moderate damage to the airfield, light port damage, many secondary explosions were reported and casualties were very light.

Andaman Island's port was subjected to moderate damage from 35 X B-25J. The AA fire claimed a Mitchell and damaged 6 others. Later 30 X B-29 came and the ground fire damaged 3 of them. The airstrip was moderately damaged, there were some secondary explosions, a Frances was destroyed and troop losses were very light.

Bangkok stubbornly put up 30 X Zeke, 11 X George, 21 X Jack, 3 X Tony, 13 X Frank and 4 X Randy. A fighter sweep of 66 X P-38J tore through them and 21 Zekes, 8 Georges, 11 Jacks, 2 Tonys, 8 Franks and all of the Randys were shot down. 12 Lightnings were destroyed and 6 more took damage.

Krung Thep was bombed by 90 X Liberator VI (3 damaged) and 32 X B-24J (1 damaged), sustaining heavy airfield damage, a very large number of secondary explosions and heavy casualties.

Davao was raided by 134 X B-29 (4 damaged). The airstrip took heavy damage, the port was lightly damaged, there were a few secondary explosions noted and troop losses were heavy.

Lunga was struck by 36 X B-24J for moderate airfield damage, a secondary explosion and extremely light casualties.

At Cotabato the IJA 56th Division was attacked by 44 X TBM (3 downed, 28 damaged) and an F6F. The unit had moderate casualties. Then 28 X SB2C, 39 X TBF, 147 X TBM and 7 X F6F did light damage to the airstrip and port, caused a couple of secondary explosions and inflicted negligible losses. Allied artillery chipped in by adding moderate personnel losses to the Japanese.

The 5th New Chinese Corps had very light losses due to 13 Peggys.

A Japanese AK was attacked by 11 X PB4Y, 10 bomb hits were claimed, but no position was given in the report.

Kwajalein's airstrip was lightly hit by 17 X PB4Y.

Japanese flights into and out of Paramushiro Jima were intercepted.

The Lucky 11 drag themselves from Jake's Jalopy swearing that if anyone expects them to fly tomorrow they'll face charges instead. Gil can't remember ever having felt so beat. He did manage to grab some sleep, but mostly he was awake for the entire mission. He's developing a distaste for V8 juice, though he does love the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches the have on the missions.

Sandy is suffering from anxiety as Bill will be leaving soon. He's organized his things and tomorrow they'll take a trip into town so he can get a bus ticket for his departure.

Slim wonders when the next push will come and who will be the side pushing. The Allied positions are so densely packed that he figures it must be impossible for the Japanese artillery to miss. “Soon,” he mutters to himself. “Soon.”

Another attack by 40 X B-24D, 78 X B-24J and 21 X P-51D resulted in heavy airfield damage, some secondary explosions and very light troop losses. Then the USN joined in with 28 X SB2C, 57 X TBF, 221 X TBM and 7 X F6F. The airstrip and port took very light damage, a single secondary explosion was observed and losses were extremely light. Allied artillery participated by adding light Japanese casualties.

Bill quietly packs his things while Sandy watches with tears rolling down her cheeks. She tells him that she promised herself that she wouldn't do this, but can't help herself. He embraces her and tells her not to worry as the Navy will probably assign him to a desk somewhere safe and sound.

Slim huddles in his hole wondering if anybody will ever make a movie that shows how truly horrible war is. Between the boredom, terror and worse than horrible conditions he lives under he can't believe that people actually do this to each other. He wants to make the Corps his career, but one war is more than enough for anybody to suffer through, if they're lucky enough to survive. One of the mortar men cracked today and Slim thinks that it's beginning to happen to more and more of the lads. Then he wonders if it's happening to him.

Churchill contacted FDR once again asking for the USN to help rid the Bay of Bengal of the IJN once and for all. The request was rebuffed, respectfully. The Navy is stretched now and in the near future the demands will put a tremendous strain on the men and machines.

Britain's Home Guard was stood down today.

The US 3rd Army penetrated the Westwall near Saarlautern.
