The SS O16 was hunted by 5 X PC 33 miles S of Singapore, but she managed to avoid an attack.

The SS Roncador was pounded by 3 PGs and 2 PCs 87 miles W of Nagasaki and the sub and all of her crew were lost.

Matsuyama was under the protection of 7 X Frank when 142 X B-29 arrived. A Frank was destroyed and 2 damaged in their attack on the bombers who then faced the flak. All told 5 Superforts were damaged and they hit the Mitsubishi engine plant for light damage.

Amboina was struck for light airfield damage, a secondary explosion and very light casualties. A second attack caused negligible airstrip damage.

Gili Gili was visited by 2 waves of Allied planes who inflicted very light damage on the airfield and moderate losses to the IJA 21st Division. Later a third attack caused moderate Japanese casualties.

At Tavoy the IJA 128th Ind. Mixed Brigade suffered very light losses and managed to destroy a Mosquito FB.VI, damaging 2 others and damaging 4 Beaufighter Mk 21s.

The 18th USA Engineer Regiment, 29 miles N of Toyohara, was attacked by 11 Irvings, but 8 P-47Ds intercepted them and shot down 4 of the Japanese planes. Then another attack was made by 4 X Irving, 33 X Grace, 12 X Betty, 11 X Frances, 12 X Peggy and 35 X Frank on the 197th USA Regimental Combat Team. 8 X P-47D and 8 X FM-2 attacked the Japanese planes destroying an Irving, 2 Peggys and 10 Franks, there was a Grace and a Frances damaged too. 2 Jugs were damaged and 2 Wildcats went down (4 damaged) and the unit took moderate casualties.

At Hong Kong the USN's air power was flexed as they attacked the port and did very heavy damage to it, triggered many secondary explosions, and there were moderate personnel losses. A Helldiver and a TBF were damaged by AA fire. Japanese ships in the harbor were also struck.
PG Shosei Maru 7 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
DD Tamanami 12 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
PC Ch 12 6 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
Later on another wave of planes attacked and 2 SBDs, 1 SB2C, 3 TBFs and a TBM were damaged by the flak. The port had additional heavy damage, some more secondary explosions were reported, moderate casualties and the Japanese ships were hit once again.
PG Shosei Maru 5 bomb hits, sunk
DD Tamanami 12 bomb hits, sunk
PC Ch 12 2 bomb hits, sunk
TK Zuiyo Maru 2 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage

At Clark Field the Allied artillery bombardment attack caused moderate Japanese losses.

At Naga the Allied artillery barrages inflicted heavy casualties on the Japanese.

Word has reached the guys that the attack the other day at Clark faced the same as they have experienced here at Naga. “Pound them into dust with bombs and artillery and then we'll have another go,” said one of the replacements. Jay tells him to shut up as the next attack will teach him to respect the enemy, if he lives through it. Jay hasn't been around as long as some, but longer than others and he's smart enough to know that just staying alive is all due to luck. He won't take any foolish chances, but won't leave his pals either.

Sam gave Frankie a bath today and wonders how the dog can manage to get so filthy. Of course the dog loves to roll around in the dirt and one of the docs told him that the dirt kills parasites. Sam muttered something about maybe he should take up the same habits as the dog.

Jim hangs around with nothing to do and he watches some of the guys taking scraps of metal and fashioning them into bracelets and other trinkets to sell and trade to the thousands of guys who are just as bored as he is.

Kurt flew a CAP mission today and tried to remember everything he's been taught and told to do. When they landed his flight leader told him that he'd have to learn to hold his position in the formation better or some Japanese pilot would be picking him off one of these days.

Did you mean "fared the same"?

Kudos for keeping the AAR going. It looks like you won't have to use a nuke!

Capt. Harlock thanks for the pat on the back. It hasn't been easy between ral life, not being in the mood, writer's block, etc. to keep after this AAR. It's a possibility.

Combat

The Kiwis unloaded over beach at Amboina taking very heavy casualties. 2 Invaders were damaged as they hit for light airstrip damage, light damage to the port, a secondary explosion and very light casualties.

The SS S-38 hit an AK with a torpedo 71 miles E of Soerabaja doing heavy damage to the ship.

The SS Tunny, 17 miles E of Batavia, was attacked by 3 tin cans, but managed to elude them before any real harm was done.

Matsuyama was struck by 102 X B-29 for light heavy industry damage.

Georgetown was jumped by Allied planes for moderate airfield damage, a couple of secondary explosions, a destroyed Zeke and moderate personnel losses.

Gili Gili had very light airstrip damage, heavy casualties and the IJA 21st Division had heavy losses from a few air attacks.

At Tavoy the IJA 31st Division took moderate casualties and the Allies had 2 Mosquito FB.VIs and 3 Beaufighter Mk 21s damaged.

At Clark Field the IJA 54th Ind. Mixed Brigade absorbed heavy losses and there were 2 TBMs, 5 Mitchells, 2 PB4Ys and 1 B-24J damaged. Next up was the IJA 58th Ind. Mixed Brigade and it had very heavy casualties. 8 Lightnings, 3 Jugs (1 downed), 8 Mitchells and 9 Invaders were damaged. Allied artillery chipped in for very heavy Japanese casualties.

The 197th USA Regimental Combat Team, 26 miles N of Toyohara, was attacked by 33 X Grace, 12 X Betty, 11 X Frances, 12 X Peggy and 22 X Frank who were intercepted by 6 X FM-2. A Grace and a Frank were downed as was a Wildcat was damaged while the unit had moderate losses. Questions will be asked about where the P-47Ds were that were assigned to LRCAP duties in that area.

At Naga the Japanese had heavy casualties from the Allied artillery.

Sandy was on one of her hikes and her mind was far away and she forgot all about the time. When she finally got home Dave was sitting on the front porch having a beer, waiting for her. He told her that wandering around the mountains in the dark is dangerous and “For your punishment you'll now have to eat what I prepared for dinner. Wash up and I'll heat up the food.” She just said sorry and OK and headed off to the bathroom wondering what kind of concoction he whipped up.

“So they keep telling us to be ready to go and then they never tell us anything except to be ready,” says Jay's pal. “I'm telling you this army is screwed up. I want to get home and I'm not dumb enough to believe that sitting here in this hole is going to get me there.” Jay agrees though he's leery of the assault on the Japanese positions on the next hill.

Red and Cookie discuss the message sent to them from their lawyer in Honolulu. “What the hell,” said Cookie, “We're so far in debt now what difference does any more make?” Red agrees and they both share the attitude that they can always sell some land to clear the debts if need be. “Our lawyer has thrown some more of his own money into the bottomless pit so he'll either sink of swim with us.” They go to the Captain and Red asks for permission to send a message to the company's Honolulu office so they can send it on to the lawyer and Captain Demasa gives his OK.

Combat

A PBM Mariner spotted an AG-104 at Johore Bahru and claimed a hit.

78 miles E of Teloekbetoeng the SS Sabalo was attacked by 5 X PC who gave her a horrible pounding. The sub will make for port to have her light systems damage repaired.

A naval bombardment of Toyohara resulted in extremely light damage to the airfield and heavy Japanese casualties. The Karafuto Mixed Brigade was being protected by 5 X Irving, 23 X Frank and 2 X Randy when 156 X B-29, 57 X B-24D, 47 X B-25J, 9 X A-26B and 24 X P-51D arrived on the scene. The Mustangs lost 3 planes trying to protect their charges and the AA fire and the fighters that broke through their defense bagged 1 X B-24D (6 damaged) and 3 B-25Js (2 damaged). 5 B-29s and 3 A-26s were also damaged. The unit sustained very heavy losses.

The SS Salmon was brutalized by 4 PCs about 145 miles N of Matsue and the sub was sunk.

The SS S-38 tracked and attacked an AK 16 miles E of Soerabaja, hitting it with 2 torpedoes that destroyed the vessel.

Gili Gili had very light damage done to it's airstrip and had a couple of secondary explosions from 12 X Liberator VI. Another raid later on in the day caught the IJA 21st Division for moderately heavy losses.

At Naga the IJA 43rd Division was hit for moderate casualties and 5 Invaders were damaged. Allied artillery inflicted very heavy losses on the Japanese.

The 197th USA Regimental Combat Team, 16 miles N of Toyohara, was attacked by 32 X Grace, 10 X Betty, 15 X Frances, 10 X Peggy and 25 X Frank. The raiders were intercepted by 51 X P-38J, 35 X P-47D and 12 XFM-2 and they shredded the attackers by splashing 26 X Grace, 10 X Betty, 15 X Frances, 10 X Peggy and 16 X Frank. The Americans had 5 Jugs and 2 Wildcats destroyed and 2 Lightnings and 2 Wildcats were damaged. The unit suffered no harm.

Georgetown was swept by 11 X P-47D who came up empty.

Amboina was bombed by Allied planes who inflicted negligible casualties and had 2 A-26Bs damaged. The Kiwis attacked the Japanese positions, taking some ground and sustaining moderate losses while the Japanese had light casualties.

Near Tokyo 95 X P-51D, some of whom roared in low above the waves to attack the destroyers there and the others were flying shotgun. 8 X Zeke, 25 X Shinden, 28 X Frank and 27 X Tony had other ideas and the furball raged. The Japanese had 6 Zekes, 12 Shindens, 11 Franks and 12 Tonys (1 damaged) shot down and the Americans lost 20 Mustangs (4 damaged) to the Japanese fighters and the flak thrown up by the IJN ships.
DD Kaba 8 shell hits
DD Tochi 16 shell hits
DD Hatsuume 8 shell hits
DD Hatsuzakura 4 shell hits
DD Yadake 4 shell hits
DD Yaezakura 4 shell hits

At Clark Field an Allied assault managed to take no ground, but absorbed very heavy casualties. The Japanese sustained extremely heavy losses, but held their line.

London has been informed that many of the ships for Operation Swift Sword are sailing before dawn. When the news is passed to Churchill he seems to be very happy. He wants very badly to accomplish some big things before the war closes , if for no other reason than to demonstrate to Washington that the UK is not to be disregarded.

“They attacked the Jap lines again today and still haven't been able to make a dent in them?” asks the private. Jay has it all figured out and if he's right then the Japanese know too. Once progress at Clark is made the attacks will begin here at Naga. This doesn't offer him any comfort as he knows that despite the bombings and shellings the Japanese are waiting and determined to make the Americans pay for every inch of ground that they take.

Kurt got to fly a CAP mission today while the more seasoned pilots were off attacking the Japanese ships. Sooner or later he figures that he'll be in on those offensive missions. All he needs to do is keep his nose clean and learn.

Combat

A PBM spotted an AK near Henchow and claimed a hit. In the afternoon 16 X PB4Y attacked the 4 Japanese APs. 2 bombers were damaged and 2 APs each ate a bomb, 1 ship was burning.

Australian troops unloading over beach at Amboina took heavy casualties. An air raid caused a couple of secondary explosions at the cost of a downed A-26B and another damaged. The Kiwis and Aussies assaulted the Japanese defenders taking some more ground, inflicting heavy casualties on the Japanese while having negligible losses of their own.

Okayama had 5 X Frank flying when 124 X B-29 arrived with 45 X P-51D escorts. 4 Franks were shot down and the others fled. The AA fire downed a Superfort and damaged 4 others as they inflicted moderately heavy heavy industry damage. Another wave of 151 B-29s arrived and 2 were damaged by the flak as they caused heavy damage to the heavy industry.

Toyohara was being protected by 4 X Irving, 8 X Frank and 2 X Randy and they managed to chase away a snooping Kingfisher, who escaped without damage. The 15th Engineer Regiment had heavy losses from a pair of air strikes and the CAP was nowhere to be found. In the afternoon the CAP again chased away a Kingfisher without managing to harm it. Allied artillery opened up on the defenders and there were light Japanese losses as a result. Japanese transports flying into and out of Toyohara were intercepted by Allied fighters.

Nagasaki's port was the target for 16 X B-24J (1 downed, 5 damaged) and 21 X P-38J who bulled through 5 Tonys (2 splashed) and 11 Franks (3 destroyed). The port took moderate damage, there was a secondary explosion and personnel losses were placed at extremely light. The Japanese ships in the harbor also caught some bombs.
AK Teiyu Maru 1 bomb hit, on fire, heavy damage
AP Kyuma Maru 1 bomb hit, on fire, heavy damage
AK Tatsubato Maru 2 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
AP Otori Maru 1 bomb hit, on fire, heavy damage
AK Dowa Maru 1 bomb hit, on fire, heavy damage
AP Ayatosan Maru 1 bomb hit, heavy damage
DD Hatsushima 1 bomb hit, on fire, heavy damage

Alor Star had 27 X Zeke, 9 X George and 12 X Jack up when 64 X Mosquito FB.VI and 46 X Thunderbolt II arrived. The Allied fighters destroyed 18 Zekes, 7 Georges and 11 Jacks at the cost of 2 damaged Jugs. The bombers had 3 planes damaged by ground fire as they hit the airstrip for light damage, some secondary explosions, a burning Emily and light casualties.

Georgetown was swept by 17 P-47Ds and they chased, but didn't catch 2 Zekes that were in the area.

Naga was bombed by 44 X B-24D and 41 X B-24J (2 damaged) for moderate airfield damage, light damage to the port, a large number of secondary explosions were reported and troop losses were heavy. The IJA 43rd Division shot down an Invader and damaged 5 others as the Allied planes dumped their bombs off target. Another attack on the same unit 45 minutes later caused very heavy casualties and 11 Invaders and a Liberator were damaged. 3 PB4Ys were damaged as a raid hit for negligible damage to the airfield, a secondary explosion was seen and personnel losses were extremely light. An assault by the Allies gained some ground while inflicting extremely heavy casualties on the Japanese and sustaining very heavy losses of their own.

At Tavoy the IJA 31st Division sustained moderate casualties from an air raid in which a Mosquito FB.VI and a Beaufighter Mk 21 were damaged.

At Clark Field the Allied troops attacked and again failed to gain any ground. The Japanese had extremely heavy casualties and the Allies had heavy losses.

The Yorktown dropped anchor at Takao and Chris' war slows down as the ship replenishes her fuel bunkers, ammo lockers and all of the other things she needs to operate. The first thing he wants to do is get a little time ashore just to walk around with bare feet.

Winston paces, nervous about Operation Swift Sword. This operation must not fail and the RN is throwing just about everything into it. He's still upset that Washington wouldn't even send him some oilers. This Truman fellow is tougher towards Stalin, but Franklin helped his friends more readily.

Jay's unit returned to the line after they had a hot meal and the morning off. He was glad to learn that his company has been placed in reserve and that they missed the attack on the Japanese. He watches the sobering sight of all of the men being transported back to the aid stations and knows that things didn't go so well. Reserve or not it won't be long before they get throw into the meat grinder.

Combat

Australian troops unloaded over beach at Amboina taking moderately light casualties. An air strike caused a secondary explosion and extremely light losses. The assault gained more ground today with the Japanese having moderate casualties and the Allied forces took light losses.

Okayama was under an umbrella of 29 X Frank when 142 X B-29 arrived. The fighters made a fast slashing attack and then were gone. 2 Franks were shot down and 12 were damaged and then the AA fire took over. 2 B-29s were destroyed and 16 were damaged and the heavy industry took moderate damage.

Toyohara's LRCAP of 4 Irvings, 7 Franks and a Randy were engaged by 6 P-51Ds. In the brief running fight an Irving was splashed and a Mustang was damaged. The Karafuto Mixed Brigade was struck by 80 X TBM (1 damaged), 45 FM-2 (3 downed, 1 damaged)) and 8 F4F-4. First the attackers fought their way through 4 X Irving, 7 X Frank and 1 X Randy and the Japanese lost 4 Irvings and 4 Franks. The attack produced light casualties for the Japanese unit. Later another strike on the Karafuto Mixed Brigade was made by 155 X B-29, 50 X B-24D, 40 X B-25J, 9 X A-26B and 31 X P-38J (1 downed) and 3 Franks and a Randy were killed opposing it. This time around the unit had very heavy losses. The 53rd USA Regimental Combat Team was attacked by 24 X Grace and 12 X P-51D and 9 X FM-2 downed 14 of them, a Mustang was damaged and the unit absorbed extremely light casualties. Then the 197th USA Regimental Combat Team was hit by 13 X Grace, 3 X Betty, 3 X Frances, 4 X Peggy and 19 X Frank. 12 X P-51D, 15 X FM-2 and 6 X F4F-4 intercepted them destroying 1 Grace, 1 Betty (1 damaged), 1 Frances (1 damaged), 3 Peggys and 6 Franks. A Mustang (2 damaged) and a Wildcat (5 damaged) were destroyed and the unit had negligible losses. An air strike caused light port damage and negligible Japanese casualties. Allied artillery barrages failed to harm the Japanese troops. Japanese transports flying into and out of the base were intercepted by roving Mustangs.

Nagasaki was swept by 55 P-38J who attacked 3 X Tony and 8 X Frank. All of the Japanese planes were killed and a Lightning went down and another was damaged.

Bangkok's port was hit for heavy damage, many secondary explosions and very heavy personnel losses. 9 Liberator VIs, 3 Mosquito FB.VIs and 4 Beaufighter Mk 21 were damaged in the attack. Almost immediately after that attack 156 X Liberator VI (14 damaged) unloaded on the airfield for very heavy damage, a huge number of secondary explosions were seen, 4 Topsys were trashed and there were very heavy casualties.

Naga was raided unsuccessfully due to overcast and the planes departed, never finding their target. Another strike a couple of hours later managed to do moderate airfield damage, moderate port damage, a very large number of secondary explosions were claimed and casualties were moderate, 3 B-24Ds and 2 B-24Js were damaged. The IJA 43rd Division was struck twice by Allied planes for very heavy losses and a B-24D and a B-25J were damaged. The IJA 55th Ind. Mixed Brigade was saved from harm by low lying cloud cover and the Allied planes departed the area. A Liberator was damaged as a raid did very light damage to the airstrip. The Allied ground attack gained ground with both sides having extremely heavy casualties.

Gili Gili had light airstrip damage and very light troop losses.

At Clark Field the IJA 54th Ind. Mixed Brigade was hit 2 times by Allied aircraft for very heavy casualties. 6 Mitchells, 1 TBM, 4 PB4Ys and 1 B-24J were damaged. The IJA 58th Ind. Mixed Brigade was jumped by marauding Allied planes for heavy losses. A pair of liberators were damaged. Allied artillery caused heavy Japanese casualties.

Near Haichow 6 X PB4Y attacked a pair of APs, hitting 1 of them with 2 bombs that started a fire. Another 4 X PB4Y arrived later and hit an AP with2 bombs, doing heavy damage and triggering fires. 17 X PB4Y arrived in the late afternoon and 1 was damaged as an AP was hit by a bomb and 2 others were hit 4 times each by bombs for heavy damage and raging fires.

Manila was attacked by 24 Helldivers (1 downed, 10 damaged) who did extremely light damage to the airfield, caused a secondary explosion and inflicted moderate casualties.

The British ships continue to steam towards their destination. More ships will follow, but this is a mightiest force that the RN has assembled since D-Day. So much depends on each arm of the military in this operation.

Excitement runs through Bill's veins as he reads his orders. The Mighty Mo is to make ready to depart Cotabato and sail for Ulithi. Escorting vessels are on their way for her and the New Jersey. Maybe the proper repairs can now get done to his ship.

Jay can't believe that his unit's time as a reserve was up and they went forward in the afternoon as his division tried to sustain a little momentum. What they got was 2 guys in the squad wounded. One of them looks like his war is over, if he survives while the other guy is expected back tomorrow or the next day.

Sam continues to hear all kinds of scuttlebutt about the 25th being pulled off of Tori Shima to go fight here or there. We're still here though, he thinks. As he stares at the ceiling of the hut he knows that for an infantryman in a war this is luxury. Just then, from under his cot, Frankie breaks breeze and the guys in the next cots all complained about the smell.

A PBM Mariner spotted an AK at Takamatsu and claimed a hit.

A naval bombardment of Toyohara caused moderate damage to the airfield, heavy port damage, an impossibly huge number of secondary explosions were observed and casualties were extremely heavy. An air attack on the Karafuto Mixed Brigade was met by 1 Irving, 15 Franks and 3 Randys. All of the Japanese fighters were destroyed except for the 7 Franks who ran for home. 1 TBM was damaged, 13 FM-2s went down and 3 dash 4 Wildcats were splashed. The unit had light losses. The 53rd USA Regimental Combat Team was attacked by 15 X Grace, 7 X Betty, 6 X Peggy and 13 X Frank who were greeted by 13 X P-51D and 11 X FM-2. A Grace, 5 Bettys, and 4 Franks were splashed and 2 Peggys were damaged. 2 Wildcats were downed and 2 more damaged and the unit had moderate casualties. 5 Franks tried to thwart a raid by planes and died for their efforts. The port was lightly hit and a couple of secondary explosions were seen. Allied artillery added light Japanese losses to today's tally. Japanese transport planes were intercepted by Allied fighters.

Aussie troops unloading over beach at Amboina had heavy losses. The 15th Engineer Regiment had heavy casualties from 2 air attacks. The Allied assault took more ground and the Japanese had heavy losses while their attackers had very light casualties.

Bangkok was raided by Allied planes and the port had light damage, some secondary explosions were observed and casualties were moderate.

At Clark Field the IJA 54th Ind. Mixed Brigade was jumped on by Allied planes for heavy losses. 1 Jug went down (1 damaged), 4 Lightnings were damaged, 2 Mitchells took damage and an Invader was also damaged. The IJA 58th Ind. Mixed Brigade was attacked twice by planes for extremely heavy casualties. 5 Mitchells, 3 Invaders, 1 Thunderbolt and 6 Lightnings were damaged. The Allied forces attacked the Japanese positions and again failed to take any ground. The Japanese had extremely heavy losses as did the Allies. Intel said the Japanese suffered 3 times the casualties that the Americans did in the fighting.

The 89th Chinese Corps, 39 miles W of Sian, was hit by 6 X Peggy and 11 X Frank for moderate losses.

At Naga an air raid did negligible damage to the airstrip and caused a couple of secondary explosions. An Allied assault took ground and both sides had extremely heavy casualties.

The SS Hawkbill, 77 miles N of Batavia, managed to elude 5 PCs that were hunting her before they could do any harm.

Churchill is driving the Admiralty crazy as he's constantly fretting about Operation Swift Sword. He's aware that the latest intel from the US indicates that it is thought that there are anywhere from 2 to 5 BBs in the CBI. “Where are these ships and are we ready for them if they suddenly appear?” he asks. Despite efforts to sooth him Winston is still fretting as he finally leaves.

The Mighty Mo sailed for Ulithi today. Bill stood on the bridge as a LT JG took the ship out of the harbor. He thought to himself that this kid is a natural who can go far, if he applies himself. Thinking of the young man as a kid makes him wonder if the weight of command makes other skippers feel so old too. He leaves the bridge and takes some time to write a letter to Sandy.

Jay flops into the freshly dug hole and announces that the first person to wake him up risks bodily harm. The other guys left in the squad just smile because they feel the same way. Nobody got hurt today, but the Japanese held their line so the stalemate continues as the bloodletting goes on.

Word was passed to President Truman that the British have elected a new PM. He wonders what dealing with this man will be like and returns his focus to the briefing being given for an operation named Thunder. This operation will we the final move prior to an invasion of Japan itself, Operation Lightning.

Jay flops down and his pal tosses him a can of something or other to eat. Jay doesn't care what it is and it really doesn’t even register as he's so worn out. The sarge got hit today and nobody knows if he'll be returning to them. The thought of a new man coming in and taking charge doesn't sit real well with the guys, but at this rate it doesn't really matter as they'll all get wounded or worse.

Clement Attle was elected PM of Great Britain.

After bulling their way through the fighters the flak took it's toll and 27 Liberator VIs were destroyed and 83 were damaged from all causes. The airfield was heavily damaged, there were many secondary explosions reported, 9 Peggys and 6 Topsys were destroyed on the ground and casualties were very heavy.

At Naga IJA 43rd Division was struck from the air 4 times for extremely heavy casualties. 1 F4U-1, 1 TBM, 1 A-26B, 1 PB4Y, 1 B-24D, 1 B-24J and 4 P-38Js were damaged in the attacks. The IJA 55th Ind. Mixed Brigade was jumped twice by Allied aircraft for heavy losses, 3 Lightnings were damaged in the strikes. The Allies assaulted the Japanese positions and broke the defensive lines, but didn't take the base. Both sides sustained extremely heavy casualties in the fighting.

At Clark Field the IJA 58th Ind. Mixed Brigade had very heavy casualties from an air attack in which a Mitchell and 4 PB4Ys were damaged. The IJA 61st Ind. Mixed Brigade had extremely heavy losses from 3 air strikes. 3 Lightnings, 1 Thunderbolt and a PB4Y were damaged in the attacks. The Allied attack gained ground today and both sides took extremely heavy casualties, but intel thought the loss ratio was 2:1 in the Allies favor.

39 miles W of Sian the 89th Chinese Corps was attacked by 4 Peggys and 11 Franks who were met by 10 Warhawks. A P-40N was downed as was a Peggy (1 damaged). The unit escaped harm.

The IJN ships about 205 miles W of Bankha were attacked by 70 X Avenger II (1 downed, 16 damaged), 24 X Barracuda (7 damaged), 10 X Firefly, 61 X Corsair IV and 25 X Hellcat II with the following results.
BB Ise 6 torpedo hits, sunk
BB Fuso 5 torpedo hits, sunk
Another strike of 9 X Avenger II and 8 X Corsair IV did no harm. A little later 9 X Avenger II and 14 X Hellcat II also managed to do no harm. Then 9 X PB4Y (3 damaged), 53 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 downed, 1 damaged), 48 X Thunderbolt II and 20 X P-47D arrived and the CA Aoba took a bomb hit despite the masterful handling by her skipper, who evaded the rain storm of bombs. 17 X Irving arrived on the scene in time to be shot down by the CAP of of 14 X Firefly, 80 X Corsair IV (1 damaged) and 38 X Hellcat II. Another 6 X Irving were present in the afternoon and the CAP of 80 Corsair IV, 38 X Hellcat II (1 damaged) and 14 X Firefly splashed them all. The Aoba's luck ran out when 68 X Avenger II (2 downed, 34 damaged), 15 X Barracuda (12 damaged), 59 X Corsair IV, 31 X Hellcat II and 10 X Firefly attacked her and the other Japanese ships present. The Aoba was struck by 4 torpedoes that left her a twisted and burning hulk that broke in two and disappeared. Then 6 X PB4Y, 34 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 damaged), 24 X Thunderbolt II and 9 X P-47D attacked, but missed their targets. Later 6 X Mosquito FB.VI, 21 X Thunderbolt II and 8 X P-47D arrived and accomplished nothing. Then a surface encounter happened.

Near Haichow 6 X PB4Y hit an AP with 4 bombs that wrecked the ship. Another 6 X PB4Y arrived and they hit an AP with 2 bombs for heavy damage and fires and another AP with 4 bombs that did heavy damage and triggered fires.

Admiral Vian has ordered the ships to return to Sabang as he won't chance continuing the mission when his BBs are almost out of ammunition. Later in his cabin with a few of his closest confidants he curses his luck and the lack of ammunition that is forcing him to come about. “The PM will have my throat for this decision, but if we continue and the Japanese throw more ships at us he'll have my throat and I'll be responsible for many dead lads. If we get lucky the Japanese will have virtually nothing to try and stop us with when we return after replenishing at Sabang. Let Admiral Sommerville know immediately as his BBs' lack of ammunition is probably worrying him to death.”

Jay's company was held in reserve today and wasn't thrown into the fight. The guys are immune to the sights, smells and sounds surrounding them. Their world is in chaos and even when in reserve they were pressed into duty as stretcher bearers. There weren't enough stretchers for all of the wounded and the collection points were crowded while the wounded awaited transport to aid stations. Once the day was done Jay was exhausted and then they were told that they'd be back in the fighting after their breather. “They think that today was a rest?” asks Jay. “Are they joking? The only difference is that we weren't shooting back at them today. Another member of the squad was hit today as the Japanese paid special attention to the stretcher bearers.

Pete sips on a cup of tea as he reads the newspaper about all of the fighting going on in some places that he's never heard of. Later Sylvia and Pearl stop by to say hi to him just before the afternoon crowd pops by. Pearl is 15 months old and she's showing signs of walking. Everybody's told the proud parents that as soon as Pearl is walking they'll never have a moments peace.

Naha was swept by 17 X P-51D who found and attacked 11 X Zeke, 4 of whom were splashed.

At Clark Field the IJA 58th Ind. Mixed Brigade had very heavy casualties from 2 air attacks in which 2 Mitchells, 1 Lightning and 3 Thunderbolts were damaged. The IJA 61st Ind. Mixed Brigade found itself under attack from the air twice and the unit absorbed very heavy losses. 3 Mitchells (1 downed), 3 B-24Js and 2 PB4Ys were damaged. An Allied assault gained more ground today and the Japanese had extremely heavy casualties and the Allies had very heavy losses.

About 39 miles W of Sian the 89th Chinese Corps was hit by 3 X Peggy and 11 X Frank who ran into 10 X P-40N. A Peggy and 2 Franks were shot down and 4 Warhawks were destroyed, 2 damaged. The unit had extremely light casualties.

73 miles SE of Sabang 3 X Peggy bought the farm as they tried to attack the Allied ships being protected by 5 X Hellcat II, 5 X Corsair IV, 2 X Spitfire VIII, 8 X Thunderbolt II and 2 X P-47D. A Hellcat, a Corsair, a Spit, 3 Thunderbolt IIs and a P-47D were damaged (a very strange an improbable result).

208 miles S of Sabang 5 X Emily were destroyed by the CAP of 24 X Hellcat II, 70 X Corsair IV and 14 X Firefly, 1 of which was damaged. Then 3 X Irving made an attempt and were all splashed and a Firefly was damaged.

Shanghai was under an umbrella of 19 X George when an inbound raid of 52 X B-25J (3 damaged) and 101 X P-38J (2 damaged) arrived. All of the Georges died trying to get to the bombers. The airfield took light damage, 2 Helens, 2 Hickorys, 2 Dinahs and a Betty were destroyed.

Alor Star had 10 X Zeke, 2 X George and 3 X Jack up when 54 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 downed, 3 damaged), 37 X Thunderbolt II and 12 X P-47D arrived. 7 Zekes, 2 Georges and a Jack went down as the airstrip was lightly damaged, there were a couple of secondary explosions and personnel losses were moderate.

The SS Flasher, 26 miles E of Batavia, tried to attack 5 PCs only to have them locate her and she became the hunted. The sub now has light systems damage and her skipper has decided to terminate the patrol and return to base.

At Amboina an Allied attack swept through the shredded Japanese defensive line and took the base. Both sides had moderate casualties. The defeated Japanese retreated towards Bulla.

At Naga the Allied forces assaulted the Japanese positions and achieved a stunning victory, taking the base. The Japanese had extremely heavy losses and the survivors were retreating towards Manila. The Allies had very heavy casualties.

At Toyohara the Allied troops hit the Japanese for very heavy losses while taking heavy casualties of their own. The attack compressed the pocket that the surviving Japanese are squeezed in.

Harry sits at his desk in the Oval Office wondering about his dealings with other world leaders. He's just reread a folder about PM Clement Attlee. Will this man be as anti Stalin as Churchill was?

Jay stands in the shade offered by a shattered tree taking a drink of water. The attack today started out like the other and then suddenly the Japanese line seemed to shatter. Of course the individual Japanese soldiers fought to the death, but the organized defense collapsed and they made a very big advance today. Later on he learns that the Japanese have been pushed back all along the front and that they were retreating. He tries not to be to happy as he knows that they'll be chasing the Japanese and that the next big fight will probably be for Manila. What will fighting in a city be like, he wonders.

Stalin has had a change of heart and orders that troops be sent to the East on an accelerated timetable. “I want the option of crushing the Japanese available to me,” he said. Nobody says a word, they just scurry off to make changes in orders to facilitate what Stalin wants.

Combat

Shimuzu was attacked by 61 X B-29 who caused moderate damage to the Mitsubishi engine works. A second wave of 113 X B-29 arrived and did similar damage to the Nakajima engine plant. Then 176 X B-29 then appeared and clobbered the heavy industry for heavy damage.

Nagasaki was caught sleeping as 79 X B-29 and 63 X P-38J arrived and the AA fire, which was light and inaccurate, managed to damage 2 of the big silver birds. The heavy industry took moderate damage.

Kendari's airstrip was the target of 13 X PB4Y and 9 X Kittyhawk III. Negligible damage was done, but there were 2 secondary explosions. Another raid of 31 X B-24J (2 damaged), 12 X A-26B (1 damaged) and 91 X P-38J followed a short time later and moderate damage was done to the airfield, there were some secondary explosions claimed and casualties were extremely light.

Kadina was visited by 4 X P-51D, but no Japanese planes were found in the air.

Gili Gili had light airfield damage and the IJA 21st Division had moderate losses from a pair of air attacks.

37 miles SE of Manila the IJA 16th Division was hit by Allied planes for heavy casualties. Nearby the IJA 4th Engineer Regiment was also struck and that unit sustained moderate losses. Also the IJA 43rd Division was jumped twice for heavy casualties. The IJA 103rd Division also caught the attention of Allied aircraft resulting in very heavy losses for the unit.

At Clark Field the IJA 61st Ind. Mixed Brigade was pounced on by Allied planes two times for extremely heavy casualties. 1 Avenger, 1 Lightning, 3 Thunderbolts, 5 PB4Ys, 2 B-24Js, 3 Mitchells (1 downed) and 2 Invaders were damaged in the strikes. The Allied attack took some ground and both sides had extremely heavy losses.

39 miles W of Sian the 89th Chinese Corps was attacked by 6 X Peggy and 12 X Frank who were greeted by 9 X P-40N. A Peggy was damaged and 3 Franks went down as the Chinese lost a Warhawk trying to protect the unit which sustained moderate losses. Another strike arrived later in the day and 9 X P-40N tried to stop the 24 X Judy, 19 X Frances and 19 X Reppu. All of the Warhawks were shot down and the Japanese lost a Frances and 2 Reppus as the unit took moderately heavy casualties. The Japanese attacked the Chinese troops, forcing them to retreat towards Chungking with very heavy losses. The Japanese had heavy casualties.

27 miles N of Krung Thep the Japanese surged across the river and smashed into the British lines. The attackers had extremely heavy losses and the defenders took very heavy casualties.

Near Toyohara Allied artillery accounted for heavy Japanese losses.

Another mission done and still in 1 piece, thinks Gil. He didn't even feel like having his shot after the debriefing, but took it anyway. Now he's sitting in the mess hall staring at the food and wondering what Elaine is doing right now.

Jay's unit had 2 hot meals today and he managed to grab enough ammo to carry him through the next fight, he hopes. He'd really love to be able to wash himself and shave, but that's not going to happen any time soon. Tomorrow they'll hit the road, keeping in close contact with the retreating Japanese. They're supposed to push them all the way back to Manila where the plan is to link up with the troops fighting at Clark Field. This time the Japanese have little, if any wiggle room and it's going to be a bloodbath, he thinks.

Clement Attlee has appealed to Truman for help in retaking Singapore, but Harry politely turned him down. The British PM was told that the forces of the United States are already committed to helping the Aussies and Kiwis and that there are some other operations planned to bring Japan to her knees.

The SS Lagarto caught an AK 149 miles E of Muntok just before sunrise. She hit her prey with the deck gun once and 3 torpedoes also struck the doomed vessel, which disintegrated with a huge explosion. Then before she could even effect a full reload another AK presented itself. The deck gun scored 7 times and a torpedo hit also. The ship was sinking in minutes. In the early evening the sub attacked an AK, hitting it with 3 fish that caused it to sink. The crew had a very busy and fruitful day.

An afternoon strike added light airfield damage, a secondary explosion was claimed and an Ida was destroyed.

Gili Gili had negligible damage done to it's airstrip from an air raid. The IJA 21st Division was hit later in the day by Allied planes for moderate losses.

30 miles S of Manila the Sasebo 1st SNLF escaped harm by Allied planes due to heavy cloud cover. The 4th Engineer Regiment also escaped because of the weather. The IJA 43rd Division wasn't as lucky as 2 air strikes caused moderate casualties later in the day as the cloud cover had broken up.

The IJA 6th Ind. Brigade, 37 miles W of Sian, was struck by 20 X B-25J (20 damaged) and 10 X P-40N for heavy casualties. The IJA 115th Division had heavy losses and a Mitchell went down and 21 others were damaged in the air attack.

At Manila the 28th Special Base Force was jumped by Allied aircraft and 4 Liberators were damaged. Another attack on the unit saw 7 more Liberators damaged and the unit had very heavy losses today. The 125th IJNAF Base Force damaged 6 Liberators, but still had very heavy casualties.

27 miles N or Krung Thep the IJA 45th Ind. Mixed Brigade was being protected by 6 X Zeke, 9 X Frank and 7 X Tony when 67 X Liberator VI and 11 X Spitfire VIII arrived. 4 Zekes were damaged, a Frank went down (5 damaged) and 2 Tonys were splashed (2 damaged). 11 of the bombers were damaged in the battle and the unit took very heavy casualties. Then the IJA 70th Ind. Mixed Brigade was attacked by 45 X Liberator VI and 1 X Spitfire VIII who ran afoul of 6 X Zeke, 8 X Frank and 5 X Tony. A Zeke and 2 Tonys were damaged as were 3 Liberators. The unit had heavy losses. The 18th UK Division was being snooped on by a Myrt and a Dinah when 5 Spitfire VIIIs arrived and chased them away. A few hours later that same scene replayed itself.

The 89th Chinese Corps, 74 miles W of Sian, was attacked by 6 X Peggy and 9 X Frank and 9 X P-40N downed a Peggy and 2 Franks while loosing 5 Warhawks. The unit took negligible casualties.

Near Sabang 3 Peggys tried for the Allied ships only to discover a CAP of 60 X Hellcat II, 83 X Corsair IV, 6 X Firefly, 3 X Spitfire VIII, 12 X Thunderbolt II and 3 X P-47D. The Japanese planes never stood a chance. Somehow 3 Corsairs, 2 Spits and 7 Thunderbolts (1 downed) were damaged.

Krung Thep was swept by 32 X Thunderbolt II, but the Japanese planes were nowhere to be found.

Near Kunashiri Jima the Japanese ships were attacked by 32 X B-29, 48 X B-24D, 10 X PB4Y, 18 X P-51D and 6 X P-38J.

AP Aiyo Maru 12 bomb hits, sunk
AK Junyo Maru 8 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
AK Akasisan Maru 6 bomb hits, sunk
The B-29s and B-24s were under orders to execute a city attack.

The Allied troops at Clark Field surged forward and broke the Japanese lines, taking the base. Both sides had extremely heavy losses and the Japanese survivors retreated towards Manila.

Near Toyohara Allied artillery inflicted heavy losses on the Japanese.

“Why am I not excited that tomorrow our march on Manila begins,” says Jay. The other guys in the squad are in agreement that it would be just fine with them to let the Japanese have Manila and starve them out there. The fact that their march was delayed by a day was a welcomed event. Just before chow some replacements arrived and they were distributed among the platoons that were the weakest. Nobody is paying attention to the kid who has joined their squad. Jay feels bad for him and tells him to just do what he's told to do and everything will be fine.

Stick sits silently listening to the intel officer saying that there are no known Japanese aircraft concentrations within the range of the Corsairs and that reduces them to CAPs, escort and ground attack missions that promise little if any Japanese opposition in the air. Stick silently curses his luck.

US, British and French troops entered Vienna today.

Combat

Night time surface combat near Kunashiri Jima happened when 2 X CA, 1 X CL and 6 X DD arrived and found an AK which took 7 shells hits and was sunk. The waters near Japan aren't safe to sail now that the USN has forward bases on the Japanese doorstep.

Allied troops unloaded over beach at San Jose taking moderate casualties.

Kendari underwent an air raid that caused very light damage to the airfield and a secondary explosion.

Manila's airfield was bombed by 2 waves of Liberators (11 damaged) for heavy damage, some secondary explosions were observed and personnel losses were very heavy. The IJA 16th Division had light casualties and 3 Mitchells were damaged in a raid. The IJA 43rd Division had moderate losses from 3 air strikes in which 6 Invaders and 2 Mitchells were damaged. The IJA 103rd Division was hit twice by aircraft for moderate casualties and 2 Mitchells were damaged.

Gili Gili had very light airstrip damage from an air strike. The South Seas Det. was hit for moderately heavy casualties by Allied aircraft. The 21st Division was also struck by planes for moderately heavy losses.

Near Toyohara the Karafuto Mixed Brigade was hit for moderate casualties by Allied planes. Allied artillery accounted for additional light losses for the Japanese.

The IJA 60th Division, 40 miles W of Sian, was being protected by 6 X Reppu when 16 X B-25J and 12 X P-40N arrived. 2 Mitchells (9 damaged) and 2 Warhawks were lost and the Japanese suffered 2 damaged Reppus and the unit had light losses. Then the IJA 115th Division was attacked by 15 X B-25J and 8 X P-40N who were met by 6 X Reppu. 2 Mitchells were destroyed and 11 more damaged as the Japanese had 2 Reppus splashed and the unit took very light casualties.

Alor Star was attacked by 64 X Mosquito FB.VI (2 damaged), 14 X P-47D and 37 X Thunderbolt II and 6 X Zeke, 1 X George and 3 X Jack tried to stop them. 5 Zekes and 2 Jacks were shot down and the airstrip was very lightly damaged, a couple of secondary explosions were claimed and troop losses were light.

Bouncing along the road in the back of the truck the guys are laughing at the new guy who is sick as a dog and throwing up until there's nothing left. Jay moved away from him so he wouldn't get any on him and now he's looking at himself and realizes that his uniform is little more than rags. Sarge assures him that they are going to make some stops along the way to Manila and they should be able to get some new gear then.

Chris was sitting on the beach gazing out at the fleet that stretches into the distance when one of the other pilots found him and gave him a letter from home. Chris opened it and his mother told him that the family dog had died. She went on to say that the dog would spend hours every day by the door and she was sure that the dog was waiting for him to come home. Chris just sits there looking out at the water with tears rolling down his face. “She was a great dog,” he says aloud to himself.

Truman was overjoyed at the news of the advance on Manila and he tries to temper it with the knowledge of the next battle for the city itself. The discussion with his staff then turns to dealing with the latest requests from London and then Operation Thunder.

The French collaboration trials have resulted in the following to date: 1,629 death sentences, 757 hard labor for life, 5,328 hard labor, 1,136 solitary confinement, 11,073 prison sentences, 22,137 national degradation and 3,564 acquitted.

Allied troops unloaded over beach at Bulla, taking heavy casualties.

At San Jose the Allied force took the base against virtually no opposition.

Sam hears of the big offensive in the PIs and wonders if his outfit has been forgotten. They are supposed to be relieved, but they hear nothing about it.

Ed looks over the reports and nods to himself as he sees the build up of the bases, supplies and fuel stocks. He has been told that Formosa will sink under the weight of all of the men, machines, etc. that ultimately will be there for an operation that as far as he knows is yet to be named.

A PBM Mariner spotted an AK at Haichow and claimed a hit. Within minutes of that attack the SS Carp, on patrol nearby, hit an AP with a torpedo, doing heavy damage and setting it ablaze. After reloading her tubes she hit another AP with her deck gun and a torpedo. In the late afternoon the sub attacked another AP, possibly one damaged earlier in the day, hitting it with 2 fish that caused it to sink.

The SS Hawkbill, 72 miles W of Belitung, attacked 5 PCs, hitting 1 with a torpedo that caused it to disappear in a fireball. The other 4 vessels hunted, found and pounded the sub. She'll now make for a port with moderate systems damage and moderate flooding that'll keep the crew very busy.

Krung Thep was swept by 13 X Thunderbolt II who encountered 3 X Zeke, 6 X Frank and 4 X Tony. The Japanese planes ran, but a Frank and a Tony will never take to the sky again.

Kendari was raided twice by Allied planes who caused moderate damage to the airfield, a secondary explosion seen, there were light casualties and a Liberator was damaged. In the afternoon another raid hit the airstrip which took negligible damage and a Myrt was destroyed while the flak damaged a PB4Y.

Manila was hit twice by Allied aircraft for very heavy port damage, light airfield damage, a huge number of secondary explosions were claimed and there were extremely heavy personnel losses for the cost of 4 B-24Ds and 8 B-24Js which were damaged, The IJA 43rd Division had moderate casualties as a result of 4 air attacks made on it. 2 Mitchells and 6 Invaders were damaged in the attacks. The IJA 103rd Division took moderately heavy losses from 3 air raids in which 2 TBMs, 5 A-26Bs and 3 Mitchells were damaged.

Gili Gili was hit by Allied planes for extremely light airfield damage. The IJA 21st Division had moderate casualties from another air strike.

Near Toyohara the Karafuto Mixed Brigade was jumped by USN planes and then the AAC struck too for additional light casualties. Allied artillery inflicted heavy losses on the Japanese throughout the day.

The IJA 49th Division, 28 miles N of Krung Thep, took heavy losses and the Allies had a Mosquito FB.VI downed and 2 Liberator VIs damaged.

The 89th Chinese Corps, 89 miles W of Sian, was attacked by 4 X Peggy and 10 X Frank who were intercepted by 6 X P-40N. No planes were damaged in the action and the LCU absorbed very light casualties.

The Allied ships about 81 miles SE of Taipei were attacked by 28 X Grace, 13 X Betty and 4 X Mary who were received by the CAP of 227 X F6F and 21 X F4U-1D. All save for 1 Betty were destroyed and 2 Hellcats were damaged. Then 3 X Betty and 2 X Helen were destroyed by the CAP of 220 F6Fs, 21 Corsairs and 19 Thunderbolts, 1 of which was damaged.

At Alor Star 2 Zekes and a George were up when 61 X Mosquito FB.VI and 20 X Thunderbolt II arrived. The Japanese fighters ran and the AA destroyed 2 Mosquitoes and damaged 4 more. The airstrip was very lightly damaged, a couple of secondary explosions were observed and troop losses were negligible.

139 miles W of Wakkanai 5 IJN DDs and the SS Bashaw played cat and mouse for a couple of hours with neither side firing a shot.

At Bulla the Allied troops seized the base against no opposition.

The Army is pushing forward with their plans for Operations Thunder and Lightning. The Navy is being pressured into placing almost the entire fleet into these operations. President Truman has given his OK for Thunder and depending on how that goes Lightning will be next. In the meantime Manila is the main focus and then the combat units involved will need time to rest and refit. Washington keeps an eye on the British and smugly many note that for a change the speed of Swift Sword is anything but.

Chris' mother sent him a package that finally caught up to him. He's the most popular guy in the Squadron because cookie crumbs are better than nothing.

Sam killed the day with exercises and a march around the island with full battle gear. All of the guys were moaning and groaning, but Frankie loved it. When they returned to their area and fell out it was a tired and sore squad he had on his hands. After chow they did manage to find the energy to have a card game.

Combat

The SS Kraken attacked a TK 16 miles W of Toboali, striking it with a torpedo that set it on fire. The 5 PGs and 5 PCs hunted, but failed to locate the sub. The Japanese vessels continued to hunt the Kraken throughout the morning in vain, but no matter what the sub tried to do they couldn't make a clean getaway.

Takamatsu was bombed by 113 X B-29 and the AA fire damaged 6 of the bombers as they unloaded on their target. A second strike consisting of 107 X B-29 came on and the flak damaged 3 of them as they contributed to the mayhem below. All told the heavy industry was heavily damaged.

Nagaoka's Mitsubishi engine plant was attacked by 235 X B-29 who moderately damaged it. All of the aircraft retired unharmed.

Kitakyushu was struck by 93 X B-24J and 24 X P-51D who hit their target unmolested. Another strike of 91 X B-29 and 71 X P-38J then arrived and they too had a clear run in and out. A third wave of 117 X B-29 B-29 added their punch to the devastation below and then they headed home unharmed. All told the heavy industry suffered very heavily.

Tokyo underwent a fighter sweep made by 123 X P-51D who sliced into a huge gaggle of Japanese fighters. 11 X Zeke, 31 X Shinden, 61 X Frank and 45 X Tony engaged the Mustangs and the furball was on. 10 Zekes, 29 Shindens, 60 Franks and 30 Tonys fell from the sky at the cost of 28 Mustangs destroyed and 6 others damaged.

Krung Thep was swept by 13 X Thunderbolt II who ran into 6 X Zeke, 9 X Frank and 5 X Tony. The Thunderbolts splashed a Zeke and 2 Franks (1 damaged) as the Japanese planes tried to avoid a fight. All of the big Allied fighters departed safely. Later on 144 X Liberator VI, 33 X Spitfire VIII and 9 X Thunderbolt II attacked and the Japanese had 5 X Zeke, 7 X Frank and 5 X Tony up. This time the Japanese fighters attacked and 4 Zekes, 6 Franks and 5 Tonys were shot down as they tried to stem the tide at the cost of a Jug downed and another damaged. The ground fire damaged 4 of the bombers who inflicted very heavy damage to the airfield, there was an extremely large number of secondary explosions observed and casualties were heavy.

Kendari was raided by Allied planes and a PB4Y was damaged as the port took light damage. A second attack had an A-26B and a B-24J damaged as they hit the airstrip for moderate damage, a secondary explosion and extremely light personnel losses. An afternoon raid caused very light airfield damage and negligible casualties.

Manila was hit by Allied air power repeatedly. 8 B-24Ds and 7 B-24Js were damaged as the port was on the receiving end of extremely heavy damage, a large number of secondary explosions were claimed and casualties were placed at very heavy. The IJA 16th Division sustained heavy casualties from 2 air strikes in which 2 TBMs, 2 B-25Js and 3 A-26Bs were damaged. The IJA 43rd Division had light losses from an air attack in which 3 Mitchells and 3 Invaders were damaged. The IJA 103rd Division had moderate casualties and 7 A-26Bs were damaged in the air strike. Allied artillery caused very heavy Japanese losses.

Naha was under the protection of 8 Zekes who were all splashed when 51 X A-26B, 44 X B-25J, 69 X P-51D and 54 X P-38J arrived on the scene. A Mustang was lost fending off the Zekes and the flak downed 2 Invaders and damaged 5 others and 6 Mitchells were also shot up. The airfield had moderately heavy damage, there were some secondary explosions seen, 1 Sonia, 1 Grace, 1 Mary and 2 Bettys were destroyed and troop losses were light.

Gili Gili was raided by Allied aircraft for very light airfield damage. The IJA 21st Division was also hit and the unit took moderate casualties.

Near Toyohara the Karafuto Mixed Brigade had heavy casualties from a pair of air strikes made by the USN and another by the land based planes. Allied artillery inflicted additional moderate losses.

The IJA 35th Brigade, 26 miles N of Krung Thep, was hit for heavy losses by Allied aircraft.

The Allied ships 137 miles NE of Taipei were under a CAP of 343 X F6F and 21 X F4U-1D when 36 X Grace and 1 X Betty attacked. 10 of the Graces managed to escape the blazing guns of the USN fighters and no ship was ever in danger. 2 Hellcats were damaged in the lopsided fight.

At Alor Star 2 Zekes and a George were shot down facing 50 X Mosquito FB.VI, 36 X Thunderbolt II and 13 X P-47D. The AA damaged 2 Mosquito FB.VIs. The airstrip was lightly damaged, there were some secondary explosions reported and casualties were placed at very light.

Stick has 111 missions under his belt and a goose egg is still his kill total. He's gotten so used to never seeing a Japanese plane that he finds himself getting careless when flying, like the rest of the flying Deuces. The squadron skipper reamed them out today for this and then admitted that even he was guilty. They are now to observe each other and watch for extended level flight. It is hoped that this will get them back to rubbernecking to scan the sky and not wanting to get caught sleeping by the other guys.

Chris was in the air when the Japanese tried for the ships, but his flight was off in a different sector and he had nothing to do other than listen in on the radio traffic as nothing ever came their way. He feels very detached from what's been going on lately, but the funny thing is that he automatically is alert when flying. When discussing this with other pilots they all seem to agree that some guys are born to be fighter pilots and others will never be naturals, no matter how hard they try.

Combat

A Dauntless spotted an AK near Nagasaki and reported a hit. Then a Helldiver also spotted and attacked an AK in the same area. It is suspected, but unconfirmed that this was the same ship. Later on an AP was attacked by the USN and the hapless vessel absorbed 5 bombs and a torpedo, sinking it.

The SS Pipefish tried to attack 3 PCs 79 miles SE of Kagoshima, but failed.

Takamatsu was struck by 110 X B-29 for moderate damage to the heavy industry. The AA fire damaged 8 of the big bombers.

Nagaoka's Mitsubishi engine factory was subjected to moderate damage when it was attacked by 205 X B-29, all of whom departed unscathed.

Bangkok had 5 X Tony aloft when 139 X Liberator VI arrived. 3 of the Tonys were downed in their attack on the bombers and then the flak gunners went to work. All told 1 Liberator was destroyed and 14 damaged. The airfield was heavily damaged, there were many secondary explosions observed and casualties were heavy.

Krung Thep was swept by 13 X Thunderbolt II who pounced on a Zeke and a Frank. The Zeke blew up in midair while the Frank made it to the clouds.

Kendari was struck three times for moderate damage to the airstrip and a secondary explosion.

Manila was repeatedly attacked by Allied planes for light airfield damage, heavy port damage, some secondary explosions and heavy personnel losses. 5 B-24Js, 3 B-24Ds were damaged in the attacks. The IJA 16th Division was hit for very light casualties and 3 Invaders and a Liberator were damaged. The IJA 43rd Division was hit twice for heavy losses and the Allies had 2 TBMs, 5 Mitchells and 10 Liberators damaged. The IJA 103rd Division was struck two time and it had moderately heavy casualties as a result. 2 B-25Js, 3 A-26Bs, 2 B-24Ds and 2 B-24Js were damaged. Allied artillery chipped in for heavy Japanese losses.

Gili Gili was hit for light airfield damage.

Near Toyohara the Karafuto Mixed Brigade was subjected to an air strike and the unit sustained moderate casualties. The Allied artillery barrages caused heavy Japanese losses.

The IJA35th Brigade, 29 miles N of Krung Thep, had moderate losses from an air raid.

The 18th UK Division, at Rahaeng, was attacked by 27 X Betty and 3 X Frances. 6 Spitfire VIIIs managed an intercept and downed 10 Bettys, damaging 4 others. The unit had extremely light casualties.

About 138 miles W of Nagasaki 24 Judys and 13 Franks tried to penetrate the CAP of 223 X F6F and 21 X F4U-1D. The Japanese lost 13 Judys and 12 Franks, never getting close to the ships. Later 37 X Grace, 2 X Betty and 22 X Judy tried and were dealt with by 327 X F6f and 18 X F4U-1D. 22 Graces, 2 Bettys and 22 Judys were splashed in return for 6 damaged Hellcats. Once more the ships were never in peril.

203 miles W of Medan 13 X Frances tried to attack the Allied fleet only to be greeted by 130 X Corsair IV, 73 X Hellcat II and 13 X Firefly. All of the Japanese planes were shot down and 4 Corsairs were damaged.

The SS Guavina, 76 miles W of Belitung, was attacked by 4 PCs who gave her a rough time of it. The sub now has light systems damage and light flooding so the patrol will be curtailed and the next destination is a yard for repairs.

Once again Chris' flight was off in a distant sector when the Japanese raids against the fleet were made. They were vectored to intercept an incoming raid that turned out to be false returns on the radar. Chris is content with that as he knows that kills mean dead people and there could always be leakers that penetrate the CAP and hit the ships. The small raids the Japanese are mounting don't make sense to him. Later in the squadrons ready room the pilots discuss this and wonder why the Japanese don't try to overwhelm the CAP.

Gil wearily gulps his shot down and heads off to their hut with the rest of the Lucky 11. Their group lost a crew today and 2 other planes were so damaged that they are write offs. Supposedly the brass is keeping their targets aimed at points of the least expected resistance. Gil wonders what happens when they run out of these type of targets and why would the Japanese no have planes up in vast numbers to protect themselves. The war in a confusing and horrible thing as far as he's concerned and he's glad that he's not fighting on the ground.

Jay has a new hole to live in for a while as he listens to the shells rumble and scream their way towards the Japanese. The sound is like a continuous rumble and he wonders how the already defeated Japanese Army can continue to fight on in the face of such overpowering firepower. Suddenly more Allied planes roar by overhead to dump their destruction on the Japanese. As bad as the war is for him he still believes that it's 10 times worse for the Japanese. He sighs and thinks of the old adage of “better him than me.”

A PB2Y Coronado spotted an AK at Ominato and claimed a hit.

The SS Requin stalked a pair of DDs 34 miles S of Tokyo, but before she could attack them they detected and attacked her, driving the sub deep.

Sapporo was bombed by 170 X B-29 (3 damaged), 63 X B-24D (5 damaged) and 15 X P-51D. A couple of Zekes were up and they ran, but the Mustangs managed to down one. The heavy industry took moderately heavy damage.

Tavoy was hit by 125 X Liberator VI (1 downed, 7 damaged) and 22 X Spitfire VIII. The airfield was heavily damaged, there were many secondary explosions reported and casualties were moderate.

Kendari was raided a few times for light port damage, moderate airstrip damage and a secondary explosion. 3 PB4Ys and 1 Invader were damaged in the attacks.

Manila was subjected to some bombings that caused light airfield damage, moderate damage to the port, a few secondary explosions were seen and there were heavy personnel losses. 3 B-24Js and 4 B-24Ds were damaged in the attacks. The IJA 16th Division was hit for negligible losses and an Invader took some damage. The IJA 43rd Division was struck a few times for light casualties and 2 TBMs, 1 A-26B and 2 Liberators were damaged. The IJA 103rd Division had heavy losses from 2 air raids in which 2 Mitchells, 1 Invader (1 downed) and 4 Liberators were damaged. The 125th IJNAF Base Force was hit for very light casualties and an A-26B was damaged. Allied artillery barrages accounted for very heavy Japanese troop losses.

Gili Gili was hit for negligible airfield damage. The IJA 21st Division was hit for moderate casualties.

Near Toyohara the Karafuto Mixed Brigade sustained heavy casualties from an air attack. The Japanese unit had moderate losses thanks to the Allied artillery.

The Allied fleet, 143 miles E of Shanghai, was attacked by 12 X Judy and 4 X Frank who ran afoul of 206 X F6F and 18 X F4U-1D. 8 Judys and 2 Franks were splashed and a Hellcat was damaged. Then 25 X Grace, 3 X Betty and 4 X Judy tried and all were shot down except for 3 very lucky Graces. 4 Hellcats took damage.

Alor Star was hit for light airfield damage and 2 Mosquito FB.VIs were damaged.

With Manila virtually surrounded, seemingly low on supply as the return fire from the Japanese troops is light and the Japanese units reeling from their recent defeats the Americans are confident of a speedy victory.

Jay is a combat veteran despite his young age and recent arrival in the Army. The replacements quietly talk amongst themselves, looking at the vets in awe. They are scared to death of the Japanese and even more so of themselves and how they'll act under fire. Jay wants to tell them that they're all scared, but instead he silently keeps to himself.

Sam spent the day watching the flights going in and out of Tori Shima. Tomorrow will be a bit busier as his company will spend some time in the morning on the range expending ammunition in an effort to knock the rust off. At least this training is something to do as it helps to combat the boredom known as Tori Shima. What Sam doesn't know is that the 25th Infantry Division is slated for Operation Thunder and then will in all likelihood Operation Lightning.

Shanghai was flying 8 X George who had the misfortune to meet up with 64 X B-25J and 107 X P-38J. The Lightnings splashed all of the Georges and the AA fire damaged 3 of the Mitchells. The airfield was heavily damaged, there were some secondary explosions observed, 5 Georges, a Peggy and 2 Hickorys were trashed at their revetments and casualties were negligible.

Tavoy was struck by Allied planes for moderate airfield damage, some secondary explosions and negligible personnel losses. 8 Liberator VIs were damaged by the ground fire.

Kendari had light port damage from an air raid.

Naha's airstrip took light damage, a couple of secondary explosions were claimed and a Grace and a Betty were destroyed. The defenders damaged 10 Invaders.

Gili Gili was raided for light airfield damage. The IJA 21st Division was hit later for moderate losses.

Near Toyohara the Karafuto Mixed Brigade escaped harm thanks to low lying clouds that obscured it from Allied aircraft. Another strike arrived later after the cloud cover had broken up and delivered moderately heavy casualties. Allied artillery inflicted moderate losses on the Japanese.

At Manila the IJA 16th Division sustained very light losses and damaged an A-26B. The IJA 103rd Division took heavy casualties from 3 air attacks in which 8 Mitchells, 4 Invaders and 11 Liberators (1 downed) were damaged. Allied artillery dished out very heavy losses.

49 miles S of Moulmein the 28th NLF had heavy casualties from an air raid.

At Rahaeng the 18th UK Division was attacked by 9 X Betty and 3 X Frances, but 11 X Spitfire VIII and 2 X Thunderbolt II managed to intercept and down 4 of the Bettys, damaging another. 2 Spits and a Thunderbolt were damaged and the 18th had negligible losses.

The Allied fleet, 189 miles NW of Kadina, was attacked by 8 X Judy, 8 X Grace, 2 X Betty and 2 X Frank who ran into 201 X F6F and 21 X F4U-1D. 3 Judys escaped and 2 Hellcats were damaged in the fight that saw the Japanese planes die in vain as they never got close enough to even see the ships.

Jay marvels at the amount of men and material gathered around Manila. The number of artillery shells thrown at the Japanese is staggering. All of that and the sky always seems to have Allied planes overhead, making bomb runs on the enemy. He'd half expect the Japanese to crumble, but he knows better than that. They are hopelessly outnumbered and outgunned with no chance. That doesn't matter though as bitter assaults and house to house fighting loom. One of the new guys didn't listen or just forgot as last night he got himself killed. It'll never be known if the Japanese got him or if it was friendly fire. Today the Sarge reamed the guys, reminding them to stay in their holes at night and to keep alert. No matter most of the new guys will be killed or wounded before the fighting in the PIs is over. It's just a fact of life, he thinks.

Ed has new orders for his Old Gals to stand down and await the opening of Operation Thunder. He has been recalled to Guam for a staff meeting of senior commanders concerning this operation and he looks forward to finding out more about it. It'll also be nice to see some old and friendly faces.

Stalin isn't content with the thought of a Spring Offensive and he chides his generals about it. “We kicked the Nazis all the way back to Berlin and our most effective times against them were in the winter. Why wouldn't this work against the Japanese? What to they have that would stand up to our armor? They can't match our artillery either. Instead of acting like old women you should draft an operational plan that would commence in October. I expect to see a rough draft of this plan within the next few days.” With that he seems to have had a change of heart about waiting for the Americans and British to finish off the Japanese. He has serious doubts about Truman and Attlee letting him get what he considers his due once the Japanese collapse. It angers him that the French look to keep Indochina and the British their possessions, but the territories lost by the Czarists to the Japanese might not be returned to Russia.

The Belgians announced that 2,117 collaborators have been sentenced to death out of 16,000 found guilty.

19 X Frank met with 16 X P-40N over the crossroads 147 miles NW of Chungking. Both sides were tentative and as a result 1 Frank and 4 Warhawks (1 damaged) were shot down. A short time later 9 X Reppu and 7 X Warhawks spotted one another, but both sides declined the fight.

Hamamatsu was attacked by 132 X B-29 who were intercepted by 27 X Zeke. The bombers downed 6 Zekes and damaged another 15. The Japanese fighters and AA fire combined to shoot down 3 Superforts and damage 27. The heavy industry was moderately damaged. A fighter sweep arrived 45 minutes after the bombers had left and the 60 X P-51D attacked the 7 X Zeke aloft. All of the Japanese fighters were shot down.

Kitakyushu was targeted by 92 X B-24J and 24 X P-51D who hit their target and then departed unharmed, About 15 minutes later 92 X B-29 came on and they too dumped their bombs on target and left without a scratch. A third attack was made by 118 X B-29 about 10 minutes later and once more the Japanese had nothing to throw at them. The 3 raids combined to do extremely heavy damage to the heavy industry.

Tavoy's airstrip took light damage and there were extremely light casualties from an air raid in which a Liberator VI was destroyed and another was damaged. The IJA 2nd Tank Div was jumped by 37 X Mosquito FB.VI (2 downed, 6 damaged) and 10 X Thunderbolt II for heavy personnel losses.

Gili Gili was struck for extremely light airfield damage.

At Manila the IJA 16th Division was hit twice for heavy losses and the Allies had 1 TBM, 5 B-25Js (1 downed) and 6 A-26Bs damaged. The 28th Special Base Force was visited by Allied aircraft and the unit had light casualties as a result.
The IJA 43rd Division was attacked 2 times and the unit sustained heavy troop losses while the Allies had 4 Mitchells, 1 Invader and 6 Liberators damaged. The IJA 103rd Division damaged an Invader and took extremely light casualties from an Allied air attack. The 125th IJNAF Base Force took heavy losses and 2 A-26Bs were damaged in an air strike. Allied artillery hammered away at the Japanese defenders throughout the day causing very heavy casualties.

At Rahaeng the 18th UK Division was pounced on by 13 X Betty and 3 X Frances. The unit had moderate casualties and as the Japanese planes were departing 10 X Spitfire VIII jumped them, downing 2 fleeing Bettys.

Shanghai was raided by 58 X B-25J (1 downed and 9 damaged) and 17 X P-38J who attacked the port for heavy damage, a couple of secondary explosions and some ships at anchor suffered.
PG Kaikei Maru 4 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
AP Nikki Maru 3 bomb hits, on fire
PG Yoshida Maru 3 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage

2 Graces tried to attack the Allied ships 78 miles N of Ishieak,, but the CAP of 198 X F6F and 20 X F4U-1D had other ideas and the Graces were splashed long before they could even detect the ships.

Near Toyohara the Japanese had heavy losses from the Allied big guns.

The British fleet has been constantly under the eye of Japanese snoopers since they departed Sabang, but nothing has come of it and their own searches have come up empty. Admiral Vian suspects the IJN still have a card up their sleeves so vigilance is the order of the day.

The Lucky 11 have completed another mission over Japan and when they learn that the other 2 bomb groups took heavy losses they just look at each other and wonder how much longer their luck will hold. The shot burned it's way down Gil's throat and he was off for some chow when Hoppy produced a whiskey bottle and the guys headed to their hut for a nip before eating. Their nerves are shot and the booze helps them to unwind.

Jay's squad was lucky enough to get chosen for a patrol. Jay was uncomfortably in the middle of the line and after no contact with the enemy Sarge led them back to their own lines. “No need getting ourselves shot for nothin',” he said. Nobody in the squad would argue with that. “Those were about the dumbest orders we ever got,” he continued. “Like we don't know that there's plenty of Japs out there waitn' for us.”

Above the crossroads, 147 miles NW of Chungking, 18 Franks and 16 Warhawks met and though the Japanese declined the fight they lost a plane. Later about 15 miles S of the crossroads the Chinese had moderate casualties from a Japanese artillery bombardment.

Hamamatsu was attacked by 140 X B-29 and they were bounced by 6 Zekes. A Zeke went down and 3 were damaged and then the AA took over. 5 Zekes engaged the second wave of 248 B-29s and 95 Mustangs. All of the Zekes ran and were damaged. All told 8 Superforts and a Mustang were damaged and the heavy industry was subjected to extremely heavy damage.

Rahaeng was raided by 18 X Betty and 5 X Frances and they were intercepted by 12 X Spitfire VIII. 8 X Betty (3 damaged) and 1 Frances (1 damaged) were shot down as 2 Spits were damaged. The airstrip took negligible damage.

At Manila there were air attacks throughout the day. The IJA 16th Division had extremely light casualties, the 43rd Division took light losses, the 103rd Division absorbed moderate casualties and the 55th Ind. Mixed Brigade was subjected to very light losses all at the cost of 3 B-24Ds, 6 B-24Js, 1 TBM, 5 A-26Bs (1 downed) damaged. Allied artillery caused very heavy casualties among the Japanese defenders.

Near Georgetown 9 X PB4Y (2 damaged), 61 X Mosquito FB.VI (5 downed, 18 damaged), 52 X Thunderbolt II and 21 X P-47D attacked the Japanese ships and hit a CA with a bomb and the BB Haruna with 13 bombs, starting some fires.

At Shanghai 3 X George tried to turn away 96 X B-25J (1 downed, 8 damaged) and 96 X P-38J. A George was splashed and another damaged and then the port was hit for very heavy damage, a couple of secondary explosions and some ships at anchor were struck.

Near Toyohara the bottled up Japanese forces sustained heavy losses from the Allied big guns.

Admirals Sommerville and Vian have agreed that with the discovery of BB Haruna on the other side of Sumatra that their way should be clear to the objective, this time. The planes come and go from predawn to after sunset in an effort to find the Japanese ships that must be out there. To be surprised wouldn't be good for one's career or lifespan for that matter.

Jay has obtained a couple of extra pineapples and when the new guy questions this Jay just shrugs and says that next he wants some more ammo for his M1. Sarge comes by and the new guy asks him and he answers that Jay is a killing machine and that the only thing that scares him is running out of Japanese. Everybody in earshot has troubles not breaking into laughter, most of all Jay himself.

Bill cut through the usual amount of administrative BS today and then managed to find the time to write a letter to Sandy. After he's done with the letter he puts it aside to be mailed tomorrow. He wonders about the O'Bannon and the Helena. He knows that they're in capable hands, but he misses the element of a smaller crew and it's closeness of the destroyer and even the light cruiser compared to the mass of men on the Mighty Mo. He tries to know as many of the men as he can under his command, but on this ship it's more than a tall task.

Knowing that they'll be relieved is great, but wanting to know when is killing them. Sam can't find out a thing about it at all and when the guys in the squad question him he just says that, “Frankie knows more about it than anybody I know.”

The SS Tantalus was attacked by a pair of DDs 21 miles S of Malacca. The sub will head for the barn to get the light systems damage repaired. In the late afternoon 3 X Mosquito FB.VI attacked a PG, which managed to evade the bombs through it's wild maneuvering.

Aomori was bombed by 141 X B-29, 62 X B-24D, 20 X P-51D and 12 X P-38J. The fighters had nothing to do except to mill about and watch the bombers do their deadly job. The AA fire brought down a B-29 and damaged 5 others in addition to damaging 4 Liberators. The heavy industry was lightly damaged.

Near Toyohara the Karafuto Mixed Brigade had negligible casualties from an air raid. An hour later the Allies threw another strike at the unit and this time around it had moderately heavy losses. The unit took moderate casualties from the Allied artillery.

At Manila the IJA 16th Division was hit 3 times by Allied aircraft for moderate casualties costing 10 Mitchells, 2 Invaders and 4 Liberators damaged in the actions. The IJA 43rd Division absorbed moderate casualties from 3 air strikes made on it in which 2 Avengers, 4 Invaders, 2 Mitchells and 7 Liberators were damaged. The IJA 103rd Division took extremely light losses in 3 air attacks made on it and the Allies had 5 Liberators damaged. Allied artillery caused heavy Japanese casualties.

13 miles E of Malacca 10 X PB4Y (1 downed, 3 damaged), 40 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 downed, 4 damaged), 50 X Thunderbolt II and 21 X P-47D Thunderbolt attacked the Japanese ships present.

CA Chokai 5 bomb hits
DD Akebono 1 bomb hit, on fire, heavy damage
In the afternoon Allied planes returned and 6 X PB4Y (1 downed, 2 damaged), 17 X Mosquito FB.VI (9 damaged), 18 X Thunderbolt II and 7 X P-47D hit a pair of cruisers.
CL Agano 1 bomb hit, on fire
CA Chokai 3 bomb hits, on fire
A short time later 9 X Mosquito FB.VI, 26 X Thunderbolt II and 8 X P-47D arrived on the scene, but they failed to score any hits.

139 miles NW of Padang 3 X Frances attempted to pierce the CAP of 97 X Corsair IV, 50 X Hellcat II and 14 X Firefly only to all be blasted from the air long before they had a chance to do any damage to the ships. Another 3 X Frances also tried a bit later only to meet with the Allied fighters. A Frances managed to evade and run for home while the others were splashed.

Shanghai was raided by 82 X B-25J and 5 X George intercepted them. 2 Georges were downed and then the flak chipped in with the Allies suffering 3 B-25Js shot down and 6 damaged. The port was moderately damaged and there were a few secondary explosions claimed. Ships at anchor were also hit.

15 miles S of the crossroads a Japanese attack was repulsed with heavy Chinese casualties and moderately heavy Japanese losses.

Jay busily cleans his rifle and then attends to the rest of his gear as soon there will be the opening assault on Manila. He knows that the Japanese have nowhere to go so that any ground gained will be paid for in blood. The new guy has taken to following Jay around like a lost puppy. Finally Jay tells the guy to cut it out. “Stop following me everywhere I go. You're giving me the creeps.” The guy apologizes and tells Jay that he's scared to death and nobody else in the squad even acknowledges that he's alive except for Sarge. Jay says, “What's your name?” The guy tells him and Jay continued, “Look, nobody's going to call you that so how about Al?” The new guy nods and Jay says, “Besides Alvaro it's to damned long.” With that Jay extends his hand and they shake. “Now, you have to know we're all scared to death. I'm not so scared of getting hurt anymore, because if it happens, it happens and there's nothing you can do about it other than not doing stupid things. What I'm scared of is letting the guys down.” The 2 of them continue to jaw for a while and then the Sarge stops by and tells them that they're now to share a hole. That night Jay tells Al that the first watch is his and that when he wakes Jay up he should call softly to him unless it's an emergency. Al nods and Jay reminds him that if he can't keep his eyes open that he should “Wake me up early because you never know and stupid gets people killed.”

The guys in the pub are having an argument about the war and if Australians should sit back and take it easy now that Japan is looking beaten or if they should go for the kill. They argue some more and finally they ask Pete for his opinion. “I think that there's been way to much killing in this war, but to kick the Japanese out of where they don't belong is a great service to those folks who are being ruled by them.” Some of the men nod in agreement and others just shrug.

At Tavoy 44 X Mosquito FB.VI and 13 X Thunderbolt II raided the airfield. The AA fire damaged 6 of the bombers who dished out light damage to their target, a secondary explosion was reported and casualties were very light.

Kendari was hit twice by aircraft for very light damage to the airstrip and a couple of secondary explosions were seen. The flak damaged 2 PB4Ys.

Gili Gili was struck by Allied planes for light airfield damage, a secondary explosion and light personnel losses. In another attack the IJA 21st Division had moderate casualties.

Near Toyohara the Karafuto Mixed Brigade sustained moderate losses from an air strike. The Japanese had heavy casualties thanks to the Allied artillery.

16 miles S of the crossroads the IJA 110th Division was jumped by 36 Chinese B-25Js and the unit had heavy losses. Nearby another air attack was made by 20 X B-25J on the 17th Aviation Rgt which had moderate casualties. Japanese artillery inflicted moderate losses on the Chinese.

At Manila the 28th Special Base Force took moderate casualties and the ground fire damaged 4 Liberators. The IJA 103rd Division had heavy losses from 3 air attacks in which 7 Mitchells (1 downed), 2 Invaders and 2 Liberators were damaged. The Japanese defenders absorbed very heavy casualties from the Allied artillery barrages.

Tokyo was swept by 117 X P-51D who dove out of the sun into a gaggle of 12 X Zeke, 11 X Shinden, 45 X Frank and 51 X Tony. 12 Zekes, 10 Shindens, 38 Franks and 16 Tonys (4 damaged) were shot down at the cost of 14 Mustangs lost and 2 damaged.

Kadina was bombed by 35 X A-26B and 56 X P-38J for negligible airfield damage and the AA fire damaged 6 of the Invaders.

The Japanese PCs 14 miles W of Malacca were jumped by 3 X PB4Y, 17 X Mosquito FB.VI, 27 X Thunderbolt II and 13 X P-47D.
PC Ch 22 2 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
PC Ch 11 4 bomb hits, sunk

The RN's ships about 91 miles NW of Padang were attacked by 2 X Frances and the CAP of 102 X Corsair IV (1 damaged), 79 X Hellcat II and 15 X Firefly did their deadly work killing both of the Japanese intruders long before they posed a threat.

Chris can't believe that the Japanese continue to throw 2 or 3 planes at them instead of larger strikes. Could it be that they just don't have the aircraft or are they saving them for the expected invasion of Japan itself? He managed to bag a Jap plane shadowing the fleet today and his tally now stands at 14. The ships take their turns topping off their fuel bunkers and then move in turn to replenishing their supplies of food, spare parts and ammo. He watches this dangerous ballet in awe of how the huge ships are handled so close to one another. He shudders to think of what could happen if the ships get to close and collide.

Red and Cookie lean on the rail watching as some APDs arrive at the port. Dadjangas has seen an influx of these vessels and troops for days now and the two men idly discuss what could be up. With the Palawan being forgotten the boredom of having little to do has made the crew surly and any type of distraction is a welcomed event.

Al drops into the hole and presents Jays with the additional bandolier of ammo that he wanted. Jay thanks him and then Al tosses him a carton of Camels. “I won't even ask how you got a hold of these,” said Jay. “Anything else in that sack of goodies?” Al dumps the contents on the ground and Jay stares in disbelief. “You're a real scrounger aren't you? I'll tell you what. When word about your skills get out you'll probably become the most popular guy in the platoon.” Al asks that it be kept their secret for now.

The Japanese had very heavy casualties from the Allied artillery.

At Shanghai 8 Georges were up when 100 X B-25J and 126 X P-38J arrived. 5 Georges went down and 3 Mitchells and a Lightning were damaged. The port was heavily damaged, a couple of secondary explosions were reported, troop losses were very light and a couple of moored ships ate some bombs.

Slim leads his lads onto the LST bound for another fight with the Japanese, this time at Manila. It's the 2nd Marine Division and the 43rd Infantry Division being ferried from Formosa to San Marcelino to help out in the fight. Slim is indifferent to the job ahead of them knowing that if it's not at Manila it'll just be somewhere else.

Stalin asks about the progress in the relocation of his forces and the shipment of men and material from Europe. He reminds his staff that they are not to weaken there force in Europe past the point they agreed to. “The fools in Washington and London want to disarm as fast as they can, but we will be needing our great Army once again and soon. We will never be caught sleeping again like were were when the Nazis invaded the Rodina. Never, not as long as I'm alive.”

Sam tries, but keeps running into the same old answer of nobody knows when. He tries to take comfort in knowing that plans to get the 25th Division off of Tori Shima are in the works. The waiting is what's killing them.

Mixed Brigade took moderate casualties and an Invader was damaged in the air strike. Moderate port damage, very light airstrip damage and heavy casualties were done by 2 air attacks and 7 PB4Ys were damaged. Allied artillery inflicted very heavy losses on the Japanese defenders.

At Shanghai 3 Georges ran when 87 X B-25J and 119 X P-38J arrived. A George was splashed and 7 bombers were damaged by the AA fire as they hit the airfield for moderately heavy damage, there were a couple of secondary explosions and personnel losses were very light.

29 miles NW of Malacca the RN caught up to the 3 IJN DDs that were on the receiving end of an air attack yesterday. The engagement occurred in mid morning.

At the crossroads the Japanese artillery inflicted moderate casualties on the Chinese forces.

88 miles N of Kweilin the Japanese attacked the Allied troops and suffered extremely heavy losses while the Chinese absorbed heavy casualties.

During the night there was the constant chatter of machine guns and small arms fire as both sides nervously faced one another. Jay was able to catch a catnap and that amazed AL as the massive Allied force will attack the Japanese defenders in an effort to liberate Manila tomorrow morning. Jay has heard that this will be the largest Allied ground assault against the Japanese to date.

Slim stands at the rail of the LST that is taking him and his lads to join the goings on around Manila. He quietly hopes that by the time that the 2nd Marine Division arrives the Japanese will have been crushed.

Sam watches planes come and go wondering if he'll ever escape from this awful place. His company CO told him to be careful what he wishes for because at least here he's relatively safe. Safe that is unless the Japanese decide to try and take this place back.

The Allied assault on the Japanese defensive line was like a giant wave that swept over and through the defenses capturing Manila. The Japanese had extremely heavy casualties, as did the Allies. The defeated Japanese units retreated towards Lamon Bay where they expect to do their final duty to the Emperor.

7 Peggys attacked the Manchuria Adv Corps, 14 miles SE of the crossroads, with both sides getting off scott free.

22 miles E of Kuala 6 X PB4Y (2 damaged), 39 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 downed, 2 damaged), 28 X Avenger II (2 downed, 14 damaged), 6 X Barracuda (2 downed, 2 damaged), 20 X Thunderbolt II, 12 X Spitfire VIII, 16 X P-47D, 55 X Corsair IV and 36 X Hellcat II attacked the Japanese ships who threw up a prodigious barrage which blackened the sky. Another strike composed of 6 X Avenger II (5 damaged), 1 X Corsair IV and 2 X Hellcat II arrived about 10 minutes later and they added another torpedo hit to the Mikuma's woes. 9 X Avenger II (6 damaged) arrived 5 minutes later, but they scored no hits. A few minutes later 4 X Avenger II, all of whom were damaged, arrived and they hit the Mikuma with a fish. CA Mikuma 1 bomb hit, on fire, heavy damage

Near Kuala Lumpur a DD was jumped by 3 X PB4Y, 3 X Mosquito FB.VI and 5 X P-47D. The ship was hit by 4 bombs for heavy damage and fires.

Shanghai was raided by 73 X B-25J and they ran into 2 Georges who turned tail and ran. The flak claimed 2 Mitchells destroyed and another 7 damaged. The airfield was moderately damaged, a secondary explosion was observed and a Peggy and 2 Hickorys were destroyed.

The stragglers then arrived and the 8 X Avenger II missed. A short time later 17 X Avenger II and 2 Hellcat II also arrived on the scene and they too missed. 16 X Avenger II attacked in the afternoon and came up empty.

Near Benkolen 13 X Barracuda and 11 X Avenger II attacked a PC, hitting it with 3 fish that caused the craft to disappear in a huge fireball.

78 miles NW of Changsha the Japanese assaulted the Chinese, forcing the defenders to retreat. The Japanese had very heavy losses and the Chinese took heavy casualties in the fight.

14 miles SE of the crossroads Japanese artillery shelled the Chinese who had moderately heavy losses.

Padang's nonexistent defenses were easily overcome and the base is now in Allied hands.

Harry Truman smiles as he listens to the news report on the radio. “The people need good news to buoy their spirits as this damned war drags on and on.”

Jay advanced following in the path of a Sherman tank. By the time they had stopped moving forward he realized that he hadn't even fired a shot and Manila had fallen. The bad news is that they must chase down and kill the Japanese anyway because somebody left the back door unguarded.

Slim is scratched his head wondering what the hell is going on as the convoy came about and they are told that they're returning to Formosa. Later on the company CO gathered all of the noncoms and told them to pass the word to the lads that Manila has fallen. Slim passed the word and added that the Japanese ran because they heard that the 2nd Marine Division was on it's way. The lads laughed a laugh of relieved tension, but Slim knows that they will be in on something soon enough. He feels it in his bones.

President Truman has been assured that the Japanese are boxed in at Lamon Bay and pose no threat as they're battle worn, in very poor supply at best and unprepared to fight there. The American force moving there is expected to quickly crush all opposition.

The PM is fuming at the loss of so many lives and ships. He's simply told that the RN and the RAF have the capability to do only so much and the Japanese simply overwhelmed the forces allocated.

Jay and Al walk along the side of the road as a steady stream of trucks loaded with everything under the sun rumble by. When their unit takes 5 another outfit passes them by. Jay hopes that the entire Allied force in the PIs gets to the Japanese be fore he does. Al questions this because taking Manila was a piece of cake. Jay then tells Al all about Naga and how there just isn't anything right about fighting to the death when it serves no purpose. “The Japs aren't going to go down without a fight and when they have nowhere to go we'll have to dig them out and kill them all.”

Stick asks if anybody has an inkling of the next big operation now that the PIs are all but wrapped up. “Do you think that the Deuces will get pushed forward again?” he asks nobody in particular.

A Betty spotted the AK Samadre unloading at Padang and the ship was hit by a bomb. The base was hit by 9 X Helen, 41 X Frank, 6 X Oscar and 9 X Zero who were warmly received by 14 X Hellcat II, 28 X Corsair IV and 3 X Thunderbolt II. In the ensuing furball 3 Helens (1 damaged), 25 Franks, 6 Oscars and 7 Zeros were shot down at the cost of a Hellcat and a Thunderbolt. The airstrip took negligible damage. Then 3 X Betty, 5 X Frances, 9 X Sally, 6 X Helen, 10 X Peggy, 3 X Zero, 6 X Oscar and 8 X Frank attacked the unloading ships. Once more the Allied fighters on CAP duty swung into action and they downed 4 X Peggys (1 damaged), 5 X Oscar and 3 X Frank and damaged 2 X Frances at the cost of 1 Hellcat (1 damaged) lost and 3 Corsairs damaged. The ships were hit despite the fighter's best efforts.
TK Empire Tagealand 2 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
AK Samadre 1 torpedo hit, on fire, heavy damage, was later scuttled by her crew who then waded ashore with the hope of embarking on a ship for safer places.
The AK Samfairy was also scuttled due to her severe flooding.

Over the crossroads 17 Franks and 14 Warhawks tangled with a Frank and 9 P-40Ns going down.

Tavoy had it's airstrip attacked for moderate damage, a couple of secondary explosions were seen and casualties were moderate. The Allies lost a Mosquito FB.VI and 10 more were damaged by the ground fire.

Rahaeng was attacked by 8 X Betty x and 2 X Frances who were intercepted by 12 X Spitfire VIII. 5 Bettys were shot down and the airfield was negligibly damaged, but an F-5C was destroyed.

Gili Gili's airstrip took light damage and there was a secondary explosion observed and the IJA 21st Division was also hammered and it had moderate losses.

Near Toyohara the Karafuto Mixed Brigade was subjected to a pair of air attacks that cost the unit heavy losses. Allied artillery accounted for heavy Japanese casualties.

14 miles SE of the crossroads the IJA 12th Ind. Brigade was attacked by Chinese aircraft for very heavy casualties. The Japanese artillery did no harm today. The Manchuria Adv Corps escaped harm as the 6 Peggys attacking it dropped their bombs short of the mark.

At Lamon Bay the IJA 32nd Ind. Mixed Brigade suffered through 2 air attacks that resulted in the unit sustaining very heavy casualties. The IJA 58th Ind. Mixed Brigade was hit for moderate troop losses. The IJA 61st Ind. Mixed Brigade was also hit and it had moderate casualties.

The Allied ships about 28 miles E of Benkolen were attacked by 7 X Peggy and all were splashed by the CAP of 69 X Hellcat II, 88 X Corsair IV and 15 X Firefly. 2 Hellcats and 5 Corsairs were damaged. A little later 3 more Peggys arrived and they too were killed. Then 2 Bettys were blasted from the sky.

15 miles N of the crossroads the Japanese caused moderate Chinese losses with their artillery barrages.

After a hot meal and Jay finds himself on the march once again. The benches on the deuce and a half aren't the most comfortable thing in the world, but they sure beat having to walk. It was a welcomed relief when they boarded the trucks this morning. The bad part is that they'll arrive in time to be involved in the fighting. The pursuit of the Japanese is taking him to a place called Lamon Bay and supposedly it's going to be a mop up operation as the Japs have been beaten to a pulp. He wonders if that means lots of bunkers, hidden fire pits and a fanatical defense as usual. In the distance he can hear the faint rumble of explosions and planes are constantly passing overhead.

Red slumps in his seat listening to some music over the radio, There's nothing of any interest going on other than the big fight around the Manila area. For those living aboard the Palawan the monotony of daily life is stifling. Cookie stops by and hands Red a couple of biscuits, one of which gets flipped to Lucky who devours it in a flash and is then looking for more.

Elaine's father is listening to the Pirates game while mowing the grass in the back yard. He actually is getting updates from Elaine as he's to far from the window to hear the radio most of the time. He's happy as the Bucs won the first game of the doubleheader and are doing well in the second game too against the New York Giants. Considering that it's a Wednesday it seems strange to Elaine that her father is at home and the team is playing 2 games like this. Usually a twin set is reserved for Sundays. A short time later her sister hands her a letter from Gil that just arrived. Elaine eagerly tears it open and reads it. Her father asks what's going on in the game and she answers that she doesn't know. He shakes his head and finishes off the grass and heads off to bathe before dinner.
