Pete appears for lunch and Jim says, "Would you take a gander at what the cat dragged in! Where the hell have you been Pete? Will was worried about you, as you know he's like a mother hen since we went swimming."

"Guys," says Pete, "I'm in love. I don't think that I'll be obeying those orders we got. It's not like I'm in the military after all."

Ben chimes in with, "Oh no! Our misguided navigation expert is in lust again."

The men all laugh despite Pete protesting that he's really met the girl of his dreams.

Will wants to keep his group together and is now considering how to accomplish that and not get them into to much trouble. "I'll buy us a few days, but beyond that I make no promises Pete. The Pirates will stick together, even if it means that your new love will have to wait for you to return to her." The men laugh and Will continues with, "Come hell or high water we have work to do and that's going to come first."

In another White House meeting Ed's aide is making his presentation.

The Japanese assaulted Homan with 53.7K troops, losing 239/17/0 while the Chinese defenders numbered 58.8K and lost 316/7/0.

Ed's aide steps away from the podium and an Army officer takes his place. "...and as of the 18th Tobruk was isolated." The room clears except for those highly placed.

"Yesterday Mr. Churchill and The President met to discuss various offensive plans for the ETO," announces a White House staff member. "I have no particulars to give you at this time gentlemen." With that the meeting breaks up.

Ed and Bill Donovan share a car and once inside Ed says, "Bill and Gunny are on their way to SF and the Pirates have received their orders too." Bill nods and the two of them talk of many things from baseball to the war.

Tarpon has sown her mines and is making for home.

Bill and Gunny talk and upon learning about Red Bill exclaims, "Damn it Gunny, why didn't you say something sooner? We could've delayed leaving for a day. It's not like the war won't be around tomorrow."

Gunny replies, "Private matters have to take a back seat for now, until we win this war."

"Spoken like a true jarhead," says Bill with a smile.

"I'm sorry sir, that's all we know of the Pirates and CDR Smith and Gunnery Sgt Gaffney are expected at Mare Island today." The orderly leaves Ed's office with the daily brief that reads:

17 HFAR is planning for Wyndham

Landings continue at Sabang.

The submarine Tautog is being sent to San Diego for major repairs after being made seaworthy at PH.

Bill and Gunny report in at Mare Island as ordered and to their shock learn that their orders will take them on separate paths. Bill is to sit tight and await assignment to a ship, which of course pleases him greatly. Gunny, on the other hand, will report to Camp Pendleton to help with it's construction and operation. They learn that the USMC has obtained 122,798 acres south of San Clemente and north of Oceanside. This new facility is about 4 months into construction. As it's viewed as a temporary base it's being built to minimum standards.

"It's to bad Gunny, about you and Red, this being Father's Day and all," says Bill. "If there's anything that I can do for you in the future just give me a shout." He grasps Gunny's hand, shakes it and wishes him luck.

Gunny Replies, "No sweat about the kid as I'll get in touch with him and together we'll solve this mystery. As to your generous offer, imagine a Marine needing a Squids help," he laughs and also wishes Bill the best of luck.

"The Pirates are staying put for a bit before we travel," says Will into the phone. "I don't care who wants what from us. You boys forget that we're civilians, not military. You can tell Admiral Landy for us that we'll be leaving this wonderful place soon and we'll make our way to Brisbane before heading east."

Ed enters General Marshall's office and tells him that intel has removed any doubts about Japanese intentions concerning Australia. "Is there any way that the Navy can get together with the Army and reschedule convoys and troop priorities? We need to get those 2 infantry divisions to Australia, and fast," says Ed.

"Operations Comet and Constellation have been carefully orchestrated and we'll have to live with their schedules. To try and change things now will be chaotic and you know that these ships can only travel at a certain speed while in a convoy. We'll try to do whatever else we can though. Thanks for this information Ed. As usual you and your people are doing an outstanding job. Now if you'll excuse me I have another meeting to attend," says General Marshall. Ed rises and heads of to see Admiral Leahy for a chat and some coffee.

Red confides with Cookie that this Father's Day is different than others have been. "I want to get to the bottom of this stuff with Sgt Gaffney, but to tell you the truth since I've come aboard the Palawan you've been more of a father to me than I ever had before."

Cookie smiles at Red and says, "Red you'd make any man proud to have you for a son. Besides we're business partners and we've got to watch out for one another. Now where's that forever hungry four legged monster of yours?"

The Australians are making plans to beef up the defenses at Alice Springs and Darwin and they ask the British and Americans for help.

Gunny reports to Camp Pendleton and is dismayed by what he sees. The base looks like it has been blown up, not under construction. Well, he thinks, if I'm going to be here I'll give my all for the Corps, like always. A Marine private approaches Gunny and says, "You Gunny Ralph Gaffney?" Gunny nods and the man simply says, "Follow me." They take a short walk and enter the base HQs. Gunny is shown into an office and an orderly hands him his orders.

"The Major would like to see you first thing tomorrow morning, after breakfast," the orderly says.

Gunny nods and walks off and finds a tree to sit under while he reads his orders. He has been charged with overseeing the construction of training facilities and the training program itself. Well, he says to himself, we'll start with proper discipline around here as it's a bit lax. How can we train people to be Marines without proper discipline?

Pete has spent another night with his latest flame. The men don't tease him about it like they usually do as it seems different this time. Will confides to them that they have again been ordered to get going to Brisbane where they will be supplied with transport eastwards. "We'll have to get moving eventually," says Will.

Phil has the bridge aboard Benham as they sweep ahead of the TF constantly searching for the enemy. This exercise is good to keep the ship's crew on their toes, but there's nothing like the real thing. Another 2 or 3 days of this and they'll be back at Pearl. He wonders if Bill will still be there.

The British inform the Australians that there's nothing other than the RN that's already there that can be offered. The Americans response was more comforting, if a bit vague. There will be 2 or 3 infantry divisions sent, but no time frame is given.

Stalin looms over the table looking at the recon reports and asks why it's always the same places that the planes are taking pictures of. A general tells him that they can only reach certain Japanese bases and that they need more recon planes. The others wait for the expected temper flareup, but it doesn't come. "You see, a man who isn't afraid to tell me the truth when he answers my question. I need more men like this to fight the war, not cowards who make excuses." With that Stalin leaves the room which is in a silent state of shock.

Submarine laid mines have been discovered at Trimcomalee and the MSW HMS Cromarty is dispatched to deal with this threat.

The Pirates are still in Darwin and appear, from all reports, to be in no hurry to leave. Ed considers himself a patient man, but he's used to people obeying his orders. "I want the Pirates ordered to Brisbane immediately. I want it made clear to these men that their noncompliance will no longer be tolerated. It's either leave now or face time in the brig." The orderly to whom he is speaking to has turned pale as there is nothing as scary as an upset Admiral except for an upset Chief. The man promptly heads into the outer office to cut the orders and send them on their way.

Gunny enters Major Tomas Smith's office, is shown into the Major's inner sanctum and is told to take a seat. "I want you to know that what we're doing here is based on existing Marine bases. I've been tasked with building up this facility and you are going to help me. I want your input as what we need to do to make this place work, and fast. I'm not going to beat around the bush and I want you to be blunt. Outside of this office rank may be important, but if we're to work well together I'd prefer to be partners and take advantage of your years of experience. OK?"

Gunny just replies that he's ready to start at the Major's pleasure.

Pete and Will have spent the better part of the afternoon arguing. "I can't buy more time and powerful people are getting just a tad upset with us. One more day and then I'll drag you out of Darwin if I have to. Our discussion is over and now we're going to go out to dinner, all of us and meet this love of yours," says Will.

"OK," says Pete, "But Jim, Ben and you have to be on your best behavior as she is a real lady, not the type of girl that I used to chase after."

The Pirates all agree to act as gentlemen and head off to dinner. The men arrive in the restaurant and a woman appears at their table minutes later. Pete rises to give her a kiss. "Oh no," murmurs Jim, "I used to know this gal." Ben just stares at him.

"Guys," says Pete, "This is Florence. Florence this is Will, Ben and Jim. We all go back a ways." Florence says hi and when she recognizes Jim she turns pale. "Are you OK honey? Do you need some water? What can I do Flo?" asks Pete.

"I think I need some air is all," says Florence. She immediately leaves the table, goes through the front door and never looks back.

After waiting a while Pete goes to look for her and returns empty handed. "I don't know what's going on and I'd go to her house to see but I don't know where she lives. I don't even have a telephone number."

The men give Pete all sorts of encouragement, knowing that seeing Jim caused her to run. They'll never say anything to Pete about Jim and Flo's history. They have dinner and some drinks before heading back to the base.

Status: offline 		Today Todd killed himself in frustration with the forum.  Just joking.  I spent lots of time with my latest entry to the AAR only to lose it all because the forum timed out on me.  I'll try again later in the day.  Is there a way to prevent this from happening again in the future?

Operation Comet has started as troops and supplies for Nandi and Noumea are now loading onto the first convoy of the operation. The USN< USMC and Army brass are holding their collective breath as they hope that all goes smoothly. With the intel of the Japanese prepping for a move on Oz they hope to be able to build up bases right under the Japanese noses without detection. Of course plans call for all possible circumstances, but as it's widely known if you cover 99 different possibilities you opponent will opt for number 100.

The submarine Cuttlefish approaches her patrol area guarding the approaches to Attu and Kiska. The has been no activity in this area and plans for the Army to extend it's reach are under way, though the USN is considering moving the fleet elsewhere.

Ed has sent his daily report on it's way.

The landings at Koepang have continued and on the first assault 3.1K Japanese troops capture the base from it's defenders. The Japanese suffer casualities of 92/2/0 while the men of the 1 Timor Garrison are either dead or POWs, all 554 of them.

Homan has been assaulted by 197.5K Japanese troops who suffered loses of 3086/79/1. The Chinese defenders, 49K strong, lost 2084/46/0 and the fortifications have been reduced to 0. It's expected that the city will fall with the next push by the Japs.

Bill is suffering from the same fate that Phil endured at the start of the war, wait. Eventually the Navy will have something for him to do.

Gunny has become a whirlwind that seems to be everywhere. If the workers do something wrong Gunny is there to set them straight. The workers are beginning to call Gunny by a new nickname. Overall these men can't really complain because the pay is good, the work steady and a defense related job keeps them as civilians. After the first flood of volunteers, many of whom were turned away, things have leveled off. New formations and replacements will cause almost everybody to be called up sooner or later.

June 24, 1942 Continued

The Benham arrives at Pearl Harbor and is immediately ordered to resupply, refuel and to make ready to depart. "Isn't this just like the Navy," says LCDR Worthington to Phil. "We are told to do things now so that we'll be ready whenever. More waiting lies ahead for us so set up a rotation for the men to have shore leave, one day passes as I want everybody to get a chance before we weigh anchor again." Phil agrees and summons the Chief to whom he delegates the authority to carry out the Skipper's orders.

The Pirates awaken in various states of being hung over from the night before. Will announces that he'll meet them at the mess for lunch after he visits ops and arranges their travel, etc. Will is bleary eyed and has felt better, but is pleased as he's managed to keep his men alive and together. At Ops he checks in and is handed the orders from Admiral Landy. Will reads it and tells the orderly to send the following reply, "OK, on our way." Travel arrangements are made for the Pirates to leave in the morning for Cairns and from there they will make further arrangements for Brisbane. With that he heads over to the mess and informs the Pirates that they're leaving in the morning and that the rest of the day is for them to get ready to travel and relax. Pete announces that he's heading to the beach and Ben volunteers to join him. The Pirates have an agreement, unknown to Pete, that he's not to be left alone while they're in Darwin. Pete is torn between his loyalty to his friends and his feelings for Flo and he doesn't know what to do. He and Ben spend a peaceful day walking along the shoreline talking about many different things, but not a peep about Florence and then they return to the base.

Submarines are being readied for patrols off the northern coast of Oz and plans to enlarge airstrips so that the bombing of Japanese bases in PNG can commence in force are being prepared. The Australians are working on a plan that they hope will prevent the Japanese from establishing anything more than a temporary toehold in their country. Orders are cut and the staff of various units ready to move as ordered. "If only we had more warning and more troops," says an army Captain.

Steve's AAR is about one month behind mine and mine is a little over a month behind the game itself. 

Now for the big question....Would it add to the entertainment value of the AARs if they were both, more or less, in synch time wise?  Please contribute your thoughts. 

I'm not proposing that I don't make any entries until Steve catches up, rather maybe slowing down a bit until he does.

OK so as usual everybody's keyboards are not working.

New post later today as the war heats up.

June 25, 1942 Pearl Harbor

The submarine Tarpon has concluded another mission and has yet to spot the enemy. The crew, although relieved to safely end another cruise, wants to "get on the scoreboard". Tarpon will take on fuel and make minor repairs and while awaiting new orders the crew will have time on their hands.

The BB North Carolina and her escorts arrive at Pearl and she immediately moves to refuel, take on provisions and be inspected by the brass. Everybody is in awe of her graceful lines and awesome power. "So this is what we've been waiting for? It's about time that these ships arrive so we can start kicking some Japs out of where they don't belong," say a dockworker to his pals.

Back in the Pentagon Ed is concluding another boring day in his office and looks forward to a quiet dinner with Admiral Leahy. His report for the day was:

A Coronado patrol plane has overflown Wake Island and the pictures taken show that there are 6 LCUs there made up of 13120/64/0.

Homan is still undergoing heavy bombardments as the Japanese are preparing for a final assault. The Chinese are suffering terrible loses, their morale is low and the field commanders are inadequate, a formula for failure.

The Pirates wake up and immediately see that Pete isn't there. They head over to the mess in the hope of finding him there, but don't. They have 2 hours before their transport leaves Darwin for the long trip to Cairns. Will decides that they'll split up and search for him and meet back at the airfield in time to catch their flight.

Pete has spent the night in a flop house near the docks. He needs to conserve his money and find some work while he searches for Flo.

Gunny continues to seem to be everywhere at the growing Camp Pendleton and he's swiftly earned the respect of all those there. His nickname of "Mother" among the workers is known to him, but he doesn't care as long as schedules are met.

Bill has taken to being a tourist in the San Francisco Bay area as he's got nothing else to do until orders arrive.

The large convoy continues loading and is scheduled to sail tomorrow. The US strategy hinges on the success of Operation Comet.

The Pirates have failed to find Pete so Will leaves word for him at the base ops center and they leave, as planned.

The first of Operation Comet convoys sails. There is much hope that this operation can stem the tide of the Japanese advance. If these convoys don't get to their destinations intact , well the brass doesn't even want to consider that so the USN is going to concentrate it's strength on covering this operation. The Aussies will pitch in with some escorts and the RN stands ready with major fleet assets if needed.

Pete is having no luck finding work as the docks are deserted, the rails and roads are busy with military traffic. He's at a loss as to what he can do, but he'll continue his search for a job and Flo for as long as it takes. He's got a room in a flop house and at least he's got a place to sleep, for now.

The Pirates are in Cairns and are climbing aboard a truck bound for Cooktown where they hope to find air transport to Brisbane. They have had the foresight to bring food and water, but after an hour on the road their bodies ache from the bouncing truck. "They have nerve calling this a road," say Ben. The others agree and try to sleep. Will is worried about Pete and has asked the authorities to pick him up and deliver him to the base in Darwin, if they spot him.

Bill continues to sightsee and has discovered that San Francisco is a really nice place for a visit, though he's more than ready for his orders.

Ed has managed to arrange for Bill to get a tin can to command, though he doesn't know which ship or when it'll happen. Bill knows nothing of this, because Ed knows the Navy and things tend to change all to often. His daily report is given at the White House by a Commander from Admiral Leahy's office.

Yesterday 1K RAF bombers hit Bremen. It's reported that there was heavy damage to the Focke-Wulf plant at the cost of 49 planes lost.
General Eisenhower was made US commander in Europe as of yesterday.
Today the Italians started pulling planes out of Libya and moving them to Sicily. This is being done, we suspect, to step up the attacks on Malta."

The meeting ends and everyone heads off to where ever they are going on this Friday evening.

The Soviets have still not said anything further concerning the sharing of intel with the US. Stalin is keeping an eye on the Japanese and is waiting for a chance to pounce.

Benham has sailed from Pearl as part of an ASW TF which will meet and escort the convoy approaching PH. Her days will be getting very busy as Operation Comet will strain the resources of the USN, without the Japanese contesting it. There are ships overdue for a refit, but they are required for duties that will prevent upgrades from being done for a while longer. Overall the USN is in good shape to fight a war and the new torpedo bombers will start being placed into service within a month.

The Japanese attack Homan once again with 206K troops and sweep away the 35.7K Chinese defenders, whose ragged remnants retreat towards Sian. The loses from this battle are reported as 1067/31/0 lost by the Japanese and 2928/28/0 by the Chinese.

Ed reads the report on the situation in China and is dismayed as the Allies need to keep the Chinese in the war. How can they keep an army of that size in the field, replace planes and feed them all when the Chinese can't support their own war effort and the Japanese in Burma have broken the only viable link from India? The Chinese generals do nothing to instill anything other than dread. His report for the days shows:

Recon of Wake Island reveals the usual, 6 LCUs 12740/64/0. Either this report is inflated or the Japanese have strengthened their units there. Ed suspects that the former is true as he's quickly learned that reports from the field tend to be exaggerated. He wishes that the reports were exaggerating the success of the Japanese, but he knows otherwise.

Pete continues to to look for Flo, but is meeting with failure at every turn. He has managed to find some work in a pub cleaning up in the mornings before they open. The pay is lousy, but he gets some food as part of his pay so he's in better shape now than before.

The Pirates are a little worse for wear from the ride to Cooktown and are nothing short of overjoyed that they'll have to wait a day before seating on a plane to Townsville is available. The thought of a night in a bunk is most welcome.

Gunny has spoken to the brass at Camp Pendleton and the situation is well in hand. The Corps is busily expanding to a size never dreamed of and Gunny makes mention that he'd be much more valuable in a line unit. He's been told that his current assignment is only temporary and that it's expected that he'll be getting new orders in the near future. Major Smith has been very impressed by Gunny's performance, though he never expected less, and has promised to speak to some people that he knows about getting Gunny a place in a line unit as soon as possible.

Bill has become bored and decides to take a little trip to the north. He checks in and informs an orderly that he'll be out of touch for up to a week unless there's something in the pipeline that he should know about. "No sir, nothing going on concerning you as of now, though that can change," the man says. Bill leaves and manages to obtain a jeep with a full tank of gas for his little excursion.

The submarine Cuttlefish continues her lonely and bleak patrol. There's nothing except the boring routine of life on a sub.

The port of Brisbane is full of warships from the RN, RAN, USN and Dutch navies. The problem is that they are no match for what the Japanese can throw at them so a sortie by this fleet other than ASW patrols in on hold.

The Soviets read over the recon reports that show:

7 LCUs 30500/341/6 at Hailar
The status quo reigns between the Soviets and the Japanese, though they both cast a wary eye towards the other given the history between the two countries. The only thing keeping the uneasy peace are the needs of conducting a war on other fronts.

Stalin has had a message sent to Tokyo informing the Japanese that Soviet troops will move into Sunwu and occupy it.  These troops will arrive there in 3 days time and therefore the Japanese have 2 days to respond with any objections.  If any Japanese troops are there it will be considered an act of war.  Molotov says to Stalin that if this doesn't push the Japanese to the brink, nothing will and maybe another place can be obtained at no cost.  Stalin downs a vodka and orders a copy of this message be sent to London and Washington DC.  "I want a new demand made for a second front in Europe against the Germans even though the west claims that it can't happen now.  Send both messages together to show that we are trying to provoke the Japanese while maintaining our neutrality towards them.  It's vital that our merchant ships continue to carry goods from the Americans to Vladivostock without Japanese interference.  The Japanese can't afford to fight against us on a new front as they need the men and material elsewhere as our Allies begin to build the pressure before they finally go on the offensive.  We can't afford to fight them either, for now as the Germans continue to smash our gallant forces."  With that Stalin pours another drink and stalks out of the room leaving Molotov to carry out his orders.

Stalins staff reviews the latest results of the daily recon flights:
There are 5 LCUs, 44160/568/5, at Heiho;  1 LCU, 5140/67/0, at Arshaan;  7 LCUs, 30560/345/9, at Hailar
Plans are being drawn up and changed every day to deal with a Japanese attack or to execute one of their own, if Stalin demands it.  Nobody wants to be caught unprepared by Stalin and be subjected to his wrath.

Ed enters the Oval Office and FDR montions him to take a seat.  "Yes George, he's just arrived and I'll fill him in myself," says the President.  He hangs up the phone and asks Ed, "What have you got for me today?  I'd like some good news, if possible," he says with a grin.

"Sir I wish I could give good news to you, but it's the same old story in the Pacific for the present.  Operation Comet is well underway as the first of the convoys is at sea.  The USN is devoting nearly everything it's got to insure that Comet succeeds.  If we do manage to land in Noumea, Efate and Luganville as planned then the buildup should be rapid given the forces devoted to the area.  Noumea will become a major naval base for us and allow the fleet to operate where it can truly hurt the Japanese while our LBA should be able to make life difficult for the Japanese.  In Australia units have been put on alert to march and plans to expand the base at Cooktown are being put into place.  Once Cooktown can handle our B-17s the plan calls for Port Moresby to be bombed until the airfield there can't support any operations.  Once this has been accomplished the eastern coast of Australia will become more secure and our CVs, along with the RN's will be able to operate out of Brisbane and range north of Australia too, if we so wish.  The logistics are being dealt with now and Noumea will sink under all of the fuel and supplies that will be sent there.  We need to know where the Japanese carriers are so that we don't get any nasty surprises.  Now as to today's intel:

Yesterday the British 8th Army withdrew to the El Alamein Line in Egypt.  If this position falls Rommel will waltz into Cairo and the Suez canal will fall into German hands.

Also yesterday PQ-17 sailed from Iceland.  It's made up of 35 merchant ships, 3 rescue vessels, 2 tankers for refueling at sea and 21 close escorts.  There are 297 planes, 594 tanks 4246 trucks and gun carriers along with 156K tons of cargo.  A 7 ship cruiser covering force is shadowing it and a distant cover force of the following composition is involved also:
1 X CV
2 X BBs
6 X Cruisers  
23 X DDs
4 X Corvettes
3 X MSWs
2 X AA ships
4 X ASW trawlers
In addition there are 15 submarines, 6 Russian, that sail ahead of the convoy.

Today we were informed that 2 AKs and 1 TK of this convoy aborted after accidental damage.  There is no word on what kind of damage or how it happened at this point in time.  Only 1 day at sea and we've already lost 3 ships out of the convoy before the Germans even attack it.

Also today we have word that 89 Axis divisions attacked in the direction of the Caucasus oil fields.  The Russians have been clobbered and have suffered massive casualties and numbers of POWs.

So you see Ed I can dispense with bad news too.  Now how about a little nip before you head off to the Pentagon?  What's your pleasure," asks FDR.  The two men share a drink and Ed heads back to his office.

Pete is beginning to suffer from the lack of sleep as he's driving himself very hard in his effort to find Florence.  Why did she just up and leave me like this, he wonders as he walks aimlessly through the streets of Darwin.  Soon he'll abandon his search for the day and head for work.

The Pirates are in transit to Townsville and are commenting on the merits of a C-47 versus the truck and all agree that this is luxury in comparison.  Once they arrive in Townsville they'll find transport to Brisbane and from there points east.

Lucky continues to be an excellent student, but he frustrates Red by not always obeying commands given to him.  Red wanted to show the skipper how good Lucky was and other than the sit command the dog just wouldn't do anything.  The Palawan's captain laughed and told Red not to despair and to keep up the good work.

Bill drives north in the jeep and allows himself to reflect on the war and it's course to date.  He wonders how his buddy Phil is doing aboard the Benham, if Gunny has managed to get everyone at Camp Pendleton going to his satisfaction yet, where and what are the Pirates up to now and last but not least when will he plant his feet on the deck of a ship?  The countryside is beautiful as it flashes by and he stops for gas in a remote station.  The man informs him that they have no gas for sale and the next place is about 40 miles away.  Bill sheepishly realizes that with all of his daydreaming he didn't monitor his fuel situation and now the tank reads almost empty.  "When will you get some gas?" he asks, "Do you have a telephone that I can use?  I don't suppose that any food is to be had?"

The man laughs and replies, "More gas should've been delivered yesterday, but the war has made that spotty so any time now.  My house is about 1/4 of a mile up the path, though we've got no phone.  We do have food that you'd be most welcome to share with us though and you can stay until we can get you the gas you need."

The 2 men chat until the man decides that it's time to close the place for the day.  Phil has learned his name is Dave and upon reaching the house he's overwhelmed by the smell of food being cooked.  Dave introduces Phil to his daughter, Sandra.  Phil is at a loss for words as he just stares at her.  All he can think of is that she's stunning.  The 3 of them eat and talk over dinner and Phil is wishing for the gas delivery to be delayed for a couple of days.  They say goodnight and he's shown to a room where he can sleep.

Another day another report thinks Ed. The war is passing me by and it's all I've ever prepared for in my life. He is fighting depression today and decides that he'll take the brief to the White House himself today and after dropping it off a walk around the area might help.

The submarine Tautog is undergoing repairs and as soon as she's deemed to be seaworthy it'll be off to San Diego for the major repairs. The crew looks forward to seeing the States again.

Benham's orders arrive and she'll be a part of TF 1019. She'll be screening a couple of CVs in the effort to protect Operation Comet convoys. The date for sailing is given as 8 July. The crew will be informed as they leave Pearl Harbor and LCDR Worthington is sure that they'll all be thinking about the Big E and the possibility of revenge, a thought that Phil agrees with. The men in the US military, not to mention the civilian population, are looking forward to hitting the enemy back and hurting him.

Sandra and Bill take a walk together after breakfast as Dave heads off to the gas station in hopes of getting a delivery today. Bill can't keep his eyes off of Sandra and finds it very comfortable around her. Sandra on the other hand is feeling a little uncomfortable around a naval officer. She doesn't know why she should feel this way, but talking to him as they walk comes easily as they chat about so many different things. Before they know it they reach a rocky outcrop that overlooks a valley and they both just sit down and enjoy the view. There is a silence as both of them are lost in their thoughts. After a while they decide to continue their walk and Sandra suggests that they should head back as it's getting cloudy and cooler. About 2 hours later they are caught in a chilly rain and with no cover around just continue walking talking and laughing together. Later that evening Dave informs Bill that he has had a gas delivery and Bill says that he'll fill up and head back to San Francisco tomorrow morning, weather permitting.

He sighs, picks up the report sent to him from General Marshal and reads that the Germans have reached El Alamein. The British are preparing to evacuate Cairo. Well since there's nothing else for him to do he decides to head home and on the way stop off for a bite to eat.

The Pirates flight to Rockhampton has been uneventful and they are driven to a base where they will spend the night. They dine at the officer's mess after which Will heads off to the base HQs in the hope that he can obtain some news about Pete.

Pete, in the meantime, is wearing down quickly as he spends his time searching for Flo, working and neglecting himself. Other than a morsel here and there during his search he's not really getting a meal except for at the pub, where he works.

Phil is busy seeing that the Benham is in tiptop shape for her next mission. LCDR Worthington pokes his head into the tiny wardroom and announces to Phil that it's planned for the Benham to receive her overdue upgrade in August at Auckland. "Of course this is subject to the needs of the USN," he adds knowingly. Phil hopes that Benham gets more ASW and AA capabilities since he suspects that surface actions will be few. The sinking of the Big E looms large in his mind as he remembers the Japanese planes swooping town on the TF and the carnage they dished out. Nothing scares him more than the thought of losing more ships that Benham is charged with protecting and subs can strike suddenly, without warning.

Bill and Sandra walk to the gas station together and when they arrive Dave announces that the jeep is full of gas and ready to go. "I wish you the best of luck Bill," he says, "Now I'll leave you two alone and I'll get back to work."

Bill shakes Dave's hand and says, "I can't thank you enough for opening your home to me. I'll write and promise to visit when I get the chance." He turns to Sandra and says, "Sandy, I'll write to you too and I'd really appreciate it if you'd write to me also."

Sandra looks and him, steps forward and without a word reaches towards him, gives him a hug and a kiss. "You'd better write to me or I'll have to hunt you down," she says. "Now before I start to cry, get out of here and win the damned war." With that she stands there, a tear running down her cheek as Bill gets into the jeep and starts it.

"I'll be back, promise," he says and drives off wondering what the future holds.

At Pearl Harbor more ships are loading and their sisters are doing the same in San Francisco. The war is going to heat up and the US forces are moving towards the Japanese and the inevitable battles that will follow.

Bill has returned to San Francisco and is already missing Sandy. It wouldn't be so bad if he could talk to her, but they have no telephone in their home or at the gas station. He will report in at Mare Island tomorrow morning with the hope of finding new orders.

Merchant vessels have been issued their orders at Pearl Harbor giving them their loading locations, the time scheduled for them and their position in the convoy they'll be sailing in. The loading process begins as Operation Comet seems to have expanded in scope. Escorts are making ready also as are the men of the units that will be transported to far off destinations. The US Army has allocated armored, infantry, air and support units for duty in Australia in the hope is that they will be able to stiffen the line against the expected Japanese invasion of Australia.

Ed has prepared yet another report and he wonders who gets them and what do they do with these. The information contained is mostly vague and of limited value at best. What's really needed is knowledge about where specific units of the IJN are. In the meantime an orderly will delivery the report to the White House. Surely FDR doesn't look at these every day.

While Palawan rides gently at anchor the submarine Tautog slips out of the harbor on her way to San Diego for major repairs. The crew of the Palawan watch the sub glide by and Lucky is barking. "He's barking," says Cookie, "I told you not to worry about it Red." Red had been upset that Lucky was never barking and he had been told that a Weimaraner puppy tends to be on the quiet side, but later they will do plenty of barking. The breed makes and excellent watch dog and with some training a guard dog, as the Germans are doing for their concentration camps, along with Dobermans and German Shepherds.

The submarine Cuttlefish is approaching her patrol zone.

Bill reports in at Mare Island and is told that they're expecting orders from Washington for him any time now. In the military that could mean anything as it's the old hurry up and wait routine. Bill sits under a tree and starts to write a letter to Sandy that he'll mail after lunch.

Gunny is also awaiting orders as there's nothing for him to do at Camp Pendleton other than drive around it and observe it's rapid expansion.

The Pirates, less Pete, are in Brisbane and they are told that it'll be a while before adequate transport for them can be arranged. They want to travel by air as a ship will take forever and a day to get them back to Pearl. Will still has been unable to get any news of Pete, other than "sorry, but we haven't located the bloke as of yet."

Pete has spent another fruitless day searching for Flo and he's getting depressed. He keeps telling himself that he's not a quitter. What he doesn't know is that Flo is a mere block away from him on her way out of Darwin.

USN CVTFs approach Suva where they will replenish as they are screening the Comet convoys from possible IJN intervention.

Ed has prepared yet another report that reads as follow:

What are those ships at Tokyo up too? What will they be carrying and to where? Ed feels a need to know and all of the information he getting just raises more questions than it answers. The telephone rings and snaps him back to the here and now. Picking up the phone he says, "Yes? They are ready when? OK I'll head over there for the meeting. Thank you" He's been ordered to attend a meeting at the Soviet embassy with no more than 1 aide in attendance. When he arrives there he's shown into a small room and a man in a rumpled suit bids him to sit down.

"I have been ordered by Moscow to provide you with the latest intel that we have concerning Japanese troop concentrations. The following are the latest reports that I have:

There is 1 LCU at Arshaan consisting of 5440/67/0
At Heiho there are 5 LCUs of 44940/515/28
Hailar hosts 7 LCUs of 31060/344/4

I'm not in possession of anything else of interest and as to what's going on in Europe, that doesn't concern us with this meeting. I'm also not at liberty to disclose our troop dispositions or strength of these units."

Ed replies, "I'd like to thank you for this information and I wish that I had something for you in return, but given the short notice that I got I didn't have any time to prepare anything for you. Of course if you would like to schedule future meetings with me I'd be able to put something together for you." With that Ed rises, hands the Russian who never even introduced himself, a piece of paper with the telephone number of Ed's office on it. The Russian says nothing and Ed leaves. Upon his return to his office he calls the appropriate number and reports what has transpired, adding that he gave no information to the Soviets as ordered. He adds that a written report will be submitted through the normal channels.

FDR is filled in that night as to Ed's meeting and says, "Good, now we wait and see if our friends are sincere about this or not." The Americans want basing rights for their bombers, but the Soviets have nixed the idea so far and continue to demand a second front in Europe.

Status: offline 		The war will slow down shortly as the 14th sees Carnival start.  This is the world's largest party as Brazil virtually closes down.  The festivities end on the 16th and despite company in the house and all I'll try to keep up with the AAR.

At the end of the month Steve heads of to Tasmania to play in a football (soccer to some ) tourney so the game and his AAR will be on hold.  At present I'm about 6 weeks behind the game so no disruption is planned.

I just wanted to give a heads up on the state of real life demands vs the game and the AARs.

Another Comet convoy leaves bound for the New Hebrides and Australia. Each of these vital convoys must get through or the whole operation will be in trouble as the bases are intended to lend eachother support, if needed.

The submarine Cuttlefish is now on station for her lonely patrol area off off the islands of Attu and Kiska.

The USN CVTFs have replenished at Suva.

The RN CV Illustrious should reach Sydney within the next 5 days.

MSW ops continue at Tricomalee as there has been difficulty in locating the sub laid minefields.

60 miles west of Yunan a Japanese force of 31K troops attacks a Chinese one of 15.6K. The Chinese are forced to retreat towards Yunan. The loses are reported as 226/2/1 for the Japanese and 428/2/0 for the Chinese.

Send the following to our embassy in Moscow and have it delivered to the Soviets here in Washington too. I'll bet we hear something within the day from them." FDR leans back in his wheelchair and says that it's time to move on to more pressing matters.

Pete has spent another day searching and of course has suffered more failure. He doesn't know that Flo is no longer in Darwin.

Gunny has received orders to report to Mare Island for transport. He's got his hopes up that this means that he'll be assigned to a combat formation.

Bill has heard nothing from the Navy so he's got plenty of time to write and rewrite a letter to Sandy. He put into writing what he couldn't say to her face and wonders if she feels the same way.

In Brisbane the Pirates are still trying to manage to obtain transport.

Aboard the Palawan a marathon poker game is about to break up. The final hand has been dealt to the 3 men who have all of the money of the ship's crew. Red is one of the players and as the game is 5 Card Stud he doesn't look at his hole card and the next one is dealt. It's a 3 of Clubs so when the bet comes to him he calls, still not looking at his hole card. The dealer comes around with cards again and this time Red gets an 8 of Diamonds, no help. Another player nothing while the other man has a pair of 10s. "10s bet," calls the dealer. The man bets $20 which both of his opponents call. Still Red doesn't look at his hole card. "Here they come gents," says the dealer. Red gets a 3 of Spades. "10s still bet," announces the dealer. The man bets $50 this time and Red calls while the other man folds. "Last card," announces the dealer and Red gets a 4 of hearts. "No help", says the dealer and the other man gets a 3 of Diamonds, "Your card Red," somebody watching the game says. So the man with the 10s showing says, "Red we know that you're a lucky soul, but you haven't even looked at your hole card yet. I'll bet everything that I've got on my 10s here." Time is taken to count the money the man has and then Red's money is counted. "How much?" somebody asks. The dealer says "The bet is $889 to you Red, it's all you've got." There is a hush among the men watching and Red says, "Call, on the blind." The men turn their hole cards over and Red's opponent has a Jack of Hearts. Red has lost, even though his hole card is a King of Clubs. "!0s beat 3s, sorry Red. Fellas the drinks are on me tonight!"

Red is dejected and Cookie takes him aside and says, "Lets take a walk. You know that that was pretty dumb of you not to look at your hole card. Still all in all I think that you've learned a valuable lesson here tonight."

Red looks a Cookie and says, "Yeah I know that Slim is a pretty good poker player and that I should look at my hole card in the future."

"No, I meant that gambling isn't such a good idea unless you can afford to lose and stick to that amount." Cookie then adds, "Look at it this way, at least most of that money wasn't yours in the first place and the lesson learned was worth it.

Stalin looks over reports given to him and says that these may be forwarded to the Americans, "Only if they give us something of value first."

A small, sedate gathering of The President, his Cabinet, the General Staff, White House Staff and a few others are in attendance to clebrate the nation's birthday and to hear what Franklin has decided to do about Australia.

"Let's cut right to the chase," says FDR, "I think that we realize even with our intel about a pending invasion of Australia we won't be able to repulse it. So what we've got to do is be able to counter it as soon as possible. I have assured PM John Curtin, of Australia, that we will rush all that we can and more to his country. This will cause us to weaken the Line In The Sand a bit, but not much. I want all of our armored formations to be sent to Australia and the Army will inform me as to what infantry divisions will be going too. Keep in mind that we will drive the Japanese out of Australia and from there I want to grab Timor. From Timor we will control shipping routes with our LBA and then push into the SRA. Cooktown is to undergo a rapid build up so that our bombers may reduce Port Moresby to rubble. This will enable the Allied fleets to move to northern Australia at will. I don't want to here any debate about this, just action. Now gentlemen I suggest a toast to our country, long may she prosper."

A short report will be sent out today as there hasn't been much of interest today. Ed expects to be hearing from Bill within the next day or two, other than that there's nothing doing. Maybe I should get together with Dovovan for dinner, he thinks as he reaches for the telephone.

MSW ops continue at Tricomolee

The Japanese bombard Chinese positioins 25 miles NE of Sian. This is an expected lead on to the actual Japanese attempt on the City itself, but the Chinese are determined to hold on here and not be cut off.

Chinese units move to 50 miles north of Lashio only to run into IJA troops. The Chinese formations are undersupplied and fatigued from their march.

The Pirates are still in Brisbane and though they go out to celebrate the 4th of July it's a subdued night as they are all worried about Pete.

Pete is still unwilling to give up hope and he has started being more methodical in his search for Flo. He is now going door to door, block by block in his search. Surely, he thinks, he'll turn up something eventually this way.

Bill checks in and gets his new orders. He is to assume command of DD-459 USS Laffey effective 15 August, 1942. A command of my own, at last! She's a member of the Benson Class of destroyers, a new ship. Then suddenly the thought of sea duty taking him away from Sandy makes him sad. He'll visit with her before he takes command, but first he's got the gut feeling that a call to Ed would be in order to say thanks.

Gunny arrives at Mare Island and is given his orders to report to Pearl Harbor. Transport will be arranged for him. He thinks of Red and decides that he'll spend more time with him, if possible. War does have a way of interrupting things.

Operations to expand Dutch Harbor continue and are even ahead of schedule. This will be a key base if the Japanese decide to move on Alaska. There are plans to garrison Attu and Kiska Islands as well.

To say that Stalin is angry is an understatement when he is informed that Washington has demanded more co operation from the Soviets or the possibility of Lend Lease shipments being curtailed is being threatened. "They wouldn't dare do that as they need us to fight the Germans," he bellows. "Who do they think they are to not open a second front, let us do their bleeding for them and now they demand that American troops be allowed to base on Soviet soil? Nyet, nyet this will not be allowed! Send the following to Washington and their embassy here in Moscow. We'll see who blinks."

In the United States Embassy in Moscow the Ambassador, William H Standley, has read Stalin's reply to Washington's message. He knows what his instructions are as this reaction was expected. He tells an aide to arrange a meeting with Stalin as soon as possible, tonight would be best. Three hours later he is informed that Stalin will receive him tomorrow morning at 10 AM. Standley has the military attache informed that he will accompany the ambassador to tomorrow's meeting.

With that Ed leaves and heads over to Bill Donovan's office. From there the two men head off to watch a baseball game. The Washington Senators are hosting the Boston Red Sox and it's a beautiful day for a game. They enjoy the time away from their worries, but the BoSox win 5-0 and the Senators sink to a dismal 29-50 record. "Another lost season," say Donovan. They head off in different directions after getting to Donovan's office.

Gunny is informed that unless something changes he'll be sailing with the next convoy leaving San Francisco bound for Pearl. He's got little to do so he writes a letter to Red telling him of his transfer and that he hopes that they can get together again.

Bill arranges to get a jeep and he heads north looking forward to seeing Sandy and Dave.

The Pirates are given space aboard a freighter that is bound for Noumea. They will depart as soon as the convoy finishes unloading in Brisbane. If they stay for the entire jouney back to Pearl or manage air transport will be determined as they go.

Pete is still searching and he's fighting himself to keep his morale up. His imagination is his own worst enemy as he tries to figure out what went wrong between the two of them. Where could Flo be?

In Moscow Mr Standley has been made to wait for his meeting with Stalin. The attache was unable to accompany him so he sits waiting by himself. Finally he's summoned. "Mr. Standley, how good of you to join me," says Stalin who rises from his desk to shake hands. "I'm sorry you had to wait so long, but with the demands of running a country in the middle of a war, well I'm sure that you understand." The translater has an English accent, but is very good at his job.

"Yes, well I understand," says Standley. "What I wanted to do is inform you that the United States of America is willing to ship more material to you than planned, if you allow us to utilize certain bases of yours so that we can prosecute our war with the Japanese. Independent of that is the sharing of intel. If we don't help eachother the war will be more difficult than it needs to be. The United States of America is prepared to end the Lend Lease program with your country if you choose not to cooperate. The choice is entirely up to you on both issues. I wish that I had more time to spend with you, but I'm rather busy so I won't spend any more of your valuable time, which I thank you for." With that he gets up and leaves Stalin sitting there open mouthed. Standley thinks that that went rather well all things considered.

Franklin is restless and can't sleep so he has a smoke and reads a report on the War in Europe.

On July 1
Rommel took 2K POWs from the El Alamein "box".
PQ-17 was spotted by U-boats.


On July 2
The Afrika Corps was down to 26 tanks, but still tried to break the British line of defense.
PQ-17 and QP-13 passed one another.
Jews from Berlin were sent to Theresienstadt.
Churchill defeated a motion of No Confidence in the House of Commons 475-25.

On July 3
The Germans and Italians in Egypt went onto the defensive due to exhaustion, lack of supplies and they only had 13 tanks left.
Sevastopol fell and the Germans took 97K Soviet POWs. The Germans and Romanians suffered 24K dead in the operation.

July 4
PQ-17 was attacked by Luftwaffe dive bombers and torpedo planes. The Germans had a false recon report of a BB present so they held their fleet in port. Admiral Pound believed the German fleet had sortied and ordered the convoy to disperse allowing the U-boats to feast on the unprotected merchantmen.

After considering these events he dozes off.

Pete is again on his search. He's working around the harbor area and suddenly he hears the air raid warning being sounded. He thinks that it's a drill and pays it no mind. Shortly afterwards he hears the drone of aircraft engines approaching from the north, looks up and sees a gaggle of Zeros approaching! What he doesn't know is that 48 Zeros out of Kupang are sweeping Darwin's airfield. What the hell is going on? He can't believe this crap, how the hell am I ever going to find Flo with the Japs attacking?

In the meantime 190 miles north of Derby a Japanese transport TF has been spotted.

The first raid consisting of 4 X Demon, 8 X Martin 139 and 6 X Hudson go in on the TF and are met by a CAP of 8 X Zero. One Martin leaves trailing smoke and a Zero is damaged. More important than tha,t an AK is left burning after being hit by 2 bombs.

The Allied planes are not coordinating their attacks as 3 X Hudson appear and are met by a CAP of 14 X Zero. One of the Hudsons will never see home again and another limps towards home. They never got near the convoy.

Suddenly 3 X Demon, 5 X Martin and 6 X Hudson arrive on the scene and as the CAP is busy elsewhere they attack the convoy. They manage to hit an AK with a bomb, leaving it burning and another bomb strikes a MSW, which suffers heavy damage and is burning.

Yet another strike arrives consisting of 3 X Brewster 339D and 3 X Hudson and they are received by a CAP of 7 X Zero. The Allied planes run for home losing 2 of the fighters. The Japanese CAP suffers no casualties.

The Australian MSW Deloraine is 70 miles out of Broome when suddenly the ship spots Japanese carrier based planes boring in on her. She starts evasive manuevers to no avail as 14 X Zero and 12 X Val work her over scoring 2 bomb hits. The Deloraine has suffered heavy damage and is burning. She is suddenly jumped by a second wave of planes, 5 X Zero and 15 X Val who score 7 more bomb hits sending the hapless vessel to the bottom. Her crew fought gallantly, but the Japanese didn't even suffer a scratch.

The submarine Pike is attacked near Butung Island and luckily she suffers nothing more tha a violent shaking up.

The submarine Pompano attacks a barge near Belitung Island. They have no idea what happend to the barge as they are on a mining op and leave the area, heading for home.

On the other side of the world Tautog nears San Diego, expecting to make port tomorrow. She will then undergo extensive repairs.

Ed gets a message from Bill thanking him for the unexpected present. It goes on to say that Laffey's first kill is for Ed. Ed grins to himself and returns to the formation of today's report.

When she spots him she drops everything and races to him. They embrace and kiss.

Stalin is pleased to hear some good news for a change and he's thumping some of his generals at Stakva on the back when they tell him that a division has moved into Sunwu, meeting no Japanese opposition. A staff officer then hands him the report based on recon flights over Japanese positions.

Franklin asks if there are any subs in the area that might be able to intercept the troops convoy heading to Soerabaja and is told that assets are either engaged or being rerouted to cover Australia's northern coast. He thanks the officer that Ed sent over and asks him to tell Ed hello. He then asks an aide if there is any word from Moscow. When the negative reply is given he snorts and says, "Does Stalin think that we exist to serve only his purposes without there being something to be paid to the piper?"

An IJN TF built around CAs bombards Derby, destroying 4 planes and doing light damage to the airfield itself.

A small raid on Derby appears shortly after the fires from the naval bombardment were extinguished. 3 X Zero, 3 X Helen and 2 X Dinah do no damage even though they were unopposed.

52 miles NE of Derby an IJN TF is approached by 7 X Brewster 339D and 3 X Hudson only to be jumped by 23 X Zero. The Brewsters put up a valiant fight while the bombers try to flee. There are to many of the nimble Zeros and in minutes 3 Brewsters are destroyed as is a Hudson while another Hudson has been damaged. The Japanese suffer no loses and are developing a distain for the Allied fighters, but an admiration for the pilots risking their lives in those machines.

In China Chungking is swept by 104 X Zero and 1 X Babs shows up to snoop around. The Chinese are not caught sleeping and 28 brave men pilot their I-16cs to into the Japanese gaggle. There is a brief, but furious air battle and when the two sides disengage and head for their respective bases there will be fewer mouths to feed and planes to service. The Japanese have lost 3 planes and 1 was damaged, yet there will be many happy faces at the debriefing as the Chinese lost 22 planes.

Tautog has reached San Diego and is immediately being readied for the repairs to begin. The crew has been granted 2 weeks of leave and they will gladly head off to see friends and family.

Gunny will ship out on the next convoy leaving for Pearl Harbor as places on planes are at a premium.

Pete is at a loss as to what to do and yesterday's attack did nothing to instill confidence in him. As he goes around searching for Flo he wonders what he should do if the Japanese actually invade Australia. He tells himself that that would never happen, but the lingering thought is troubling.

The Pirates manage to bribe their way onto a plane headed for Auckland and Will decides that 2 bottles of Famous Grouse aren't a bad price to pay so they head off, still wondering about Pete. Will says that he'll check in with Darwin and Admiral Landy when they reach Auckland and then they'll also see about transport for the next leg of their journey. Secretly Will feels a sense of loss about Pete since he was responsible for putting the Pirates together on their scrubbed mission in the first place. The other men are still muted compared to a short time ago.

Phil lies in his bunk aboard the Benham and wonders how this mission will turn out. They are part of a TF that consists of

They are just over the horizon from a similar CVTF and it seems that they're hunters on this trip. He thinks of how shadowing convoys headed for various islands ties them down and what if the Japanese show up in force? He keeps thinking of the sight of the Big E sliding beneath the waves and never wants to see another ship like that again, unless it's Japanese. He can't sleep as his thoughts turn to the new BB, the North Carolina, a real nice looking ship with fangs. It would be nice to seve on a ship like that, he thinks as he finally nods off.

Bill and Sandy are enjoying eachother's company and he helps her with cleaning up after breakfast. "You know," he says, "You're a pretty good cook and housekeeper, for a pretty girl that is."

She laughs and immediately asks, "Hey Buster, what do you mean by that? Are you saying that I'm a good looking housekeeper?"

Phil is now afraid to put a foot in his mouth so he just smiles and is relieved when she laughs and throws some water on him. Later in the day they will walk to the station and give Dave a couple of sandwiches for lunch and then they'll head off for a walk. Phil is amazed at how beautiful northern California is and for a sailor he's loving the mountains. He wonders how Sandy will take the news of his pending duty taking him to who knows where for an unknown time period.

Ed waits patiently to be summoned into the Oval Office at the White House. When he finally gets the call he carries in his briefcase and smartly salutes FDR who waves him to a seat. "What've got for me Ed?"

"To start with I'll give you the bad news and then, well there is no good news today.

Roti Island has be occupied by the Japanese.
A Japanese AK has hit a mine at Singapore proving yet again that the sub mining campaign is worth the effort, especially as long as the torpedos have problems.
Chungking was attacked by 104 X Zero with a Babs along to take a look around. They were opposed by 13 X I-16c of which 7 were downed to no loses for the Japanese.
Derby was attacked by 18 X Zero, 15 X Helen (1 damaged) and 2 X Dinah. The raid went unopposed but did no damage.
Chinese troops moved to 110 miles NW of Yunan only to run into prepared Japanese troops, who clobbered them.

I think that between Operations Constellation and Comet we will find ourselves in a vastly more secure situation, though if the Japanese strike hard enough at any given location they are strong enough to take it. The toops in Australia still haven't begun to move except for a couple of formations so it's safe to say that the Australian government is really willing to leave the northern coast exposed and plans on a counter thrust to take it back. Alaska is growing in strength and I think that we should accelerate the build up at Dutch Harbor, put troops on Attu and Kiska Islands and build small airfields to base patrol planes at those two places. The USN took some strength away from the area and I think that we should bolster the fleet at Anchorage to counter the Japanese thrust that I still expect to come before winter sets in. The Brits and Japanese have settled into defensive positions and are staring at eachother with the weather and terrain making any moves difficult, at best."

"Thanks Ed, you know that I value your insight and appreciate you taking the time to let me pick your brains. By the way how's that young lad, Phil is his name? Have arrangements been made for him to get command of a ship yet?"

Ed says, "Yes, he's going to be in command of a brand spanking new destroyer in about 5 to 6 weeks time, thanks to you."

"Good, good. We need smart and brave young men to see us through these troubled times. How about those new torpedo bombers for the carriers?" asks FDR.

"They are going to transfer the Devastators off and the Avengers take their place, all being done at Noumea save for the Wasp who will arrive there with Avengers on board," replies Ed.

After about 10 minutes of chatting about other small details FDR says that he'd like to share what's going in Europe.

On July 6 the British 8th Army made attacks on the Afrika Korps, but couldn't breach the German lines.
The German U-boat U-132 managed to sink 3 merchantmen in the Gulf of St Lawrence.
On the 7th we got word that Himmler OKed sterilization experiments at a concentration camp named Auschwitz.
Today, the 8th, Axis planes bombed Valetta, Malta's harbor.

I feel that this war will be made up of 4 distinct parts:
Phase 1 of Axis expansion with weak Allied resistance has ended.
Phase 2 of continued Axis expansion at a much slower pace that's heavily resisted is where we are now, roughly equal in strength.
Phase 3 will see the Allies go over to the offensive against an enemy of roughly equal strength.
Phase 4 will see the Axis forces being ground to dust before superior Allied power that will bring this war to a successful close.

I truly believe it when Winston and I say that victory will be ours."

With that Ed takes his leave.

Upon their arrival at Auckland Will tries and fails to get word about Pete. He does manage to get a message off to Admiral Landy informing him of the Pirate's progress on their journey home. Arranging transport is a difficult thing and he does manage to get them aboard a seaplane tender that will take them to an island where a PBY can then drop them off at Noumea. From Noumea he's been told that there will be penty of ships to choose from.

Pete is still searching when a women approaches him. "Are you the bloke who's been searching for Florence?" His heart skips a beat and he nods to the affirmative. "Sorry to tell you this deary, but she left Darwin days ago. I don't know where she went, but she's gone." Pete's heart sinks and he thanks the woman for her help after verifying that they are talking about the same person. Pete heads to the pub where he works plops down in a seat and asks for a pint. He's got to figure out what to do now that there's no sense in staying in Darwin. What I fool I've been is all he can think as his passion for Florence turns to thoughts of less than love. I've got to get to Brisbane he thinks.

Bill and Sandy are having a great time in one another's company. Today Bill has decided that he'll tell her about his new orders. "Ah, Sandy there's something I need to tell you. I've been given command of a ship and that means that after this visit I won't be able to return until I don't know when. The best I can do is to promise that I'll write to you whenever I have the chance and I hope you'll do the same."

Sandy looks at him and replies, "I kew that this would happen and all I can say is that you should do a good job to help win the war so that you can come back to me sooner rather than later. I'll wait for your return for as long as it takes since you've won my heart."

They embrace, kiss and continue holding eachother while staring into the other's eyes.

Cookie and Red have made plans, redone them, refined them and now have particular pieces of land that they want to buy in Hawaii. Whenever they can get to other islands in the chain they will so that they can look over the land. They are both determined to come out of this war alive and in a position to become rich. Ed's daily report contains bad news that is sure to upset the powers that be:

The Japanese have invaded Australia! Troops landed today and specifics are unknown as it is lightly defended. 3 X Martin bombers attacked the invasion fleet, that had managed to slip in under the noses of the defenders, scored no hits and all the planes were damaged by flak.

The submarine Cuttlefish continues her cruise off of the islands of Attu and Kiska.

Pete has been unable to find transport of any kind leaving Darwin and now he's hearing rumors that the Japanese have invaded Australia. He's feeling remorse about not having left when the Pirates did, but he knows that the only thing that will be of help now is keeping a level head. He decides that he'll have to report to the base where the Pirates were last posted to. Upon his arrival there he's given the old wait routine. It seems like a beehive as everybody is hurrying from here to there. Finally he's shown into an office and a naval officer sitting there calmly asks the question that Pete dreads. “Where the hell have you been? Don't you realize that there's a war on and that we all have to make sacrifices? You can't just go off to wherever.”

“I'm truly sorry for my actions and I want to make things right by rejoining my group,” say Pete.

“At the present time I'm afraid that that is quite impossible as your irreverent band known as the Pirates are somewhere between Brisbane and Pearl Harbor. I make no promises, but I will try to secure some transport for you out of Darwin. As you might have heard the Japanese have landed at Derby and we expect more landings at other places in the very near future. All transport is bring in fresh supplies and troops and what leaves is already loaded with priorities, of which you are not one. Report back to me tomorrow at 0700 and we will see where we stand as far as you are concerned. I will have a message sent to Pearl Harbor informing them that you have been found and your current status. That is all”

Well that went poorly thinks Pete as he leaves. He knows that he's in trouble, but the icy demeanor of the officer has told him just how deeply in trouble he is.

“I have to leave tomorrow morning” says Bill as he enjoys a hearty breakfast with Dave and Sandy. Now that that question has been answered the three of them continue eating in silence. After he's finished Dave excuses himself from the table and gets ready to head to the gas station. He asks Bill to walk with him.

“Bill, you know that Sandy has fallen head over heels for you and from what I can see you for her too. I want you to know that you have my heartfelt approval as I can see that your intentions towards my daughter are honorable. What I do want you to do is to take care of yourself and come back in one piece to us after kicking those treacherous bastards back to Japan where they belong.”

“I will” is the simple answer that Bill gives as the two men continue walking together in silence, each one of them lost in his own thoughts.

Red is stumped. He has no clue as to how or why Lucky keeps ripping down his pinups. The dog doesn't shred the pictures, just pulls them off the bulkhead and crumples them. What he doesn't know is that some of the crew picked up where the dog left off and as fast as Red can put up a new pinup they tear it down.

Another large convoy readies for departure from San Francisco.

The Pentagon is happily amazed that to date Operations Comet and Constellation have be untouched by the Japanese. Nobody wants to discuss this as they don't want to be the one to break the silence and then have something happen. They aren't superstitious men, but....

Ed Sends the daily brief on it's way and head off to meet Bill Donovan in Georgetown for some supper.
The report reads as follows:

Upon reaching the restaurant Ed enters it and walks to the back where Donovan is waiting for him. H e asks, “Do you have any word on the Pirates?”

“They are somewhere between Auckland and Noumea as far as I know,” replies Ed. “Pete has turned up in Darwin and we'll have him on some sort of transport as soon as the Aussies get things sorted out there. With the invasion to say that things must be chaotic would be an understatement.”

“When those boys reach Pearl I want them shipped back to here a quick as possible as I have use for people with their talents.” With that the two men turn to idle chat and the food is brought to them.

The Palawan rides at anchor awaiting new orders. Cookie, Red and Lucky have managed to get the skipper's OK for them to take off for about 5 days. They are on one of their expeditions to an outlying island looking for suitable land to buy. They aren't experts, but the idea of a place for people to enjoy a vacation at a beach is the plan. Cookie is a shrewd operator who doesn't realize that post war America will be traveling by air, spurred by the research being done now on large aircraft with large payloads and great range. They have chartered a boat to take them to the island of Kauai.

The Japanese troops continue to come ashore at Derby and the first assault sees the defense collapse. Now the Japanese have their toehold with eyes cast elsewhere.

A Japanese TF is spotted 250 miles NE of Derby and it's attacked by 7 X Brewster 339D and 3 X Hudson. They are jumped by 30 X Zero and flee, dropping their bombs into the sea. The Brewsters do their best, but the sheer weight of numbers is to much for them, not to mention the superiority of the Zeros and their pilots. Two of the Hudsons go down in flames and the other limps homeward. The Brewsters manage to damage a Zero as they lose 3 planes and another is damaged.

The Dutch sub KXV suffers an attack 50 miles N of Derby, but escapes unharmed.

A large convoy bound for Pearl Harbor leaves San Francisco.

In Alaska construction of facilities at Anchorage has ceased and units will now be transported to other bases that need to be built up. Anchorage is now a 9 level for the airfield, port and fortifications.

Bill drives south being torn with the thought of not seeing Sandy and the excitement of his impending taking command of his own ship. He wonders if he still has his Lucky Bag Yearbook for his graduating Class of 1935 and how many of those guys have commands of their own by now. What he never suspects is that his classmate, Robert E Cushman, Jr, will become the Commandant of the Marine Corps in the future.

A Captain timidly approaches him and hands him a document.

“So the Japanese are satisfied with the way things are based on the fact that they are not shifting any troops around. I want transport planes to be shifted to Khomsomalsk as soon as possible. We will use them to place troops at Okha and then will we watch for any response. I also want my diplomatic people in my office after lunch today concerning the sharing of information with Washington and if we should let them use any of our bases to bring the fight to the Japanese.”

Recon flights report that Wake Island is garrisoned by 5 LCUs made up of approximately 10720/59/0.

IJN SS I-5 was attacked and driven off by ASW protecting a small convoy 20 miles N of Canton Island.

USN SS S-18 attempted to get into attack position but the convoy escorts detected and attacked her 50 miles N of Derby. S-18 suffered light systems damage and some flooding so she'll head to Brisbane for repairs.

Chungking was swept by 103 X Zero with a single Babs poking around. The Chinese CAP of 8 X I-16c met this threat and damaged a Zero in the battle while losing 5 planes.

290 miles N of Wyndham a Japanese TF is approached by 5 X Brewster 339D and 2 X Hudson only to be bounced by 28 X Zero. The mismatch results in a damaged Zero and no hits on the Japanese ships. The Allied planes suffer a lost Brewster and a downed Hudson.

Near Derby 3 X Martin hit a Japanese DD with a single bomb causing fires to be seen. The planes return to base unmolested.

Another Japanese TF is attacked by 3 X Brewster 339 D and 3 X Hudson. They score no hits and are attacked by 12 X Zero as they head back to base. All of the Brewsters are splashed and 2 Hudsons are damaged while a lone Zero is damaged.

Other air attacks in the Derby area score nothing, but are unopposed so all planes return to base safely.

Gunny is exercising on the deck of a freighter that is part of a large convoy bound for Pearl Harbor. He doesn't know what's ahead for him, but he knows that staying in fighting condition is a must for a Marine at war.

The Pirates should arrive at Norfolk Island tomorrow and then from there they will fly out to Noumea on a PBY as soon as possible.

Pete, on the other hand has no immediate prospects for travel as he has been told to wait and remain on base.

Bill is disappointed to discover that he's missed Gunny by a day or so and wonders if their paths will cross again. He learns of the Pirates status and requests any information concerning Laffey's compliment of officers.

Sandy and Dave discuss her wanting to do something to help the war effort and nothing concrete is decided for now. She is torn between knowing that her father needs her around and her country needs help also.

In Pittsburgh Elaine has announced to her family that maybe working at a USO club isn't enough and that she intends to do more. What more is she doesn't say and her parents aren't happy about her intentions.

“Wow! This place is beautiful!” exclaims Red. “We should really take a close look around this island. I think that this is heaven on earth.”

Red nods in agreement and mentions that they also need to keep and eye on Lucky, who is racing around, sniffing everything and marking it as his own territory. This place is beautiful, thinks Red.

“The IJN bombarded Wyndham doing light damage and many Allied air attacks in the Deby and Wyndham areas accomplished nothing other than downed aircraft.” Ed looks up at FDR, sighs and continues.
"The defense of the Sian area is collapsing back into the city itself under heavy Japanese pressure. The Chinese say that they are sending in additional troops and are claiming that they will not lose the city. I would like to point out that as much as losing Sian would hurt the Chinese we shouldn't lose the fact that all hinges on Chungking and that maybe there is a way of pointing this out to our Allies. I smell a rat here and I know that I'm going out on a limb, but according to some Army pals of mine the main axis of Japanese attack will hit Chungking and it's possible that Sian is just a very strong feint.” Ed absently hands the brief to one of FDR's aides. It adds the following information:

“Thanks for the input Ed,” says FDR. “If you happen to see Bill Donovan in the next couple of days please tell him to take care of those fellows known as the Pirates.”

Ed leaves the White House and decides that on a beautiful summer Sunday afternoon he'll take a walk around the Mall.

Helens bombed Akyab for the second consecutive day doing light damage to a vacant Allied base.

Submarine S-27 has managed to put a torpedo into a Japanese AP about 80 miles N of Derby.

112 X Zero swept Chungking and were met by 6 X I-16c. In the battle 3 of the Chinese planes were shot down and the rest fled for their base. On the way to the base they spot a Babs and pounce on it, damaging the Japanese plane.

Red and Cookie have fallen in love with the Island of Kauai and have decided to invest all of their money buy as much property as they can. As they hike around an Army patrol stops them at gunpoint. They explain who they are and what they're doing when all of a sudden Lucky appears and at a dead run leaps onto one of the soldiers, knocking him to the ground. Lucky's is very excited to see the strangers and is licking the downed man's face. After things calm down a bit the soldiers are full of questions about the dog as they've never seen a gray dog before. Red, Cookie and Lucky hitch a ride with the soldiers back to their post and join them for some chow. The men share their food and conversation and decide that a ride in the morning wouldn't be an imposition so that our two wanderers can catch their boat ride back to Oahu.

Gunny is keeping a strict schedule of workouts to maintain his conditioning. Life aboard a ship is not the life for him, he thinks, as it's to confining.

Pete is told that all able bodied men are needed to help with construction of defensive positions so off he goes. When the truck reaches it's destination Pete jumps off of it and is handed a shovel and told to start filling sandbags.

The Benham maintains her station as the TF continues on it's southerly heading. Tomorrow they will come to a new course on a SW heading. With each passing hour they head closer and closer to areas considered to be under Japanese control. The TF will attempt to avoid being spotted and stay out of range of LBA. Phil has heard the crew and their rumors as to where they're going and for what. He knows that for now they are nothing more that shepherds guarding the flock.

Cdr Wallace has left his Exec to oversee the loading of Mk10 mines while he goes to HQs to get Tarpon's sailing orders. Upon his return to Tarpon he heads to his cabin, a misnomer if there ever was one, that seems no bigger than a shoebox as patrols grind on. He opens the orders and sees that they will lay the mines in Tulagi's harbor and then make for Brisbane, which until further notice will be Tarpon's new home. Later that day after everything is loaded aboard and properly stowed Tarpon leaves Pearl Harbor.

Ed's daily brief reads as follows:
65 CB is at Kagoshima
3 FFCB is at Anshan
Shanghai SNLF is at Kweilin
1.8K troops are at Pusan
16 AAR is at Manila
3 IB is at Homan

The Australians and Dutch keep up their air raids on Japanese shipping off of the coast of Australia, but score no hits.

The Japanese commenced landings at Wyndham against light opposition and it's expected that the first assault will carry the day for the invaders.

A coast watcher has reported that a Japanese AK has hit a mine and is burning at Rabaul.

The Japanese bomb a vacant Akyab again and cause no damage.

In the meantime Pete's body is one mass of sore muscles that he forgot that he even had. Filling sandbags all day long is not a task for a flier, he thinks. He continues with the mind numbing task as he daydreams and he wonders when or if he'll be able to get out of Darwin. He's heard the rumors that Wyndham has fallen to the Japanese and it doesn't take a genius to figure out that Darwin is squarely in the sights for the Japanese.

With nothing to do for about 3 more weeks Bill writes to Sandy and wanders around the San Francisco area.

Red and Cookie thank the soldiers for the ride and they call Lucky aboard the boat that will take them back to Oahu. The two of them have decided that as soon as possible they will return to The Bishop National Bank and see how much of a credit line they can obtain to buy land with. Their account there has steadily grown as they put almost all of their money into the bank.

Elaine's parents have convinced the girl that she is better off working at the USO club because the boys in the USAAC are away from home with uncertain futures and if she can cheer some of them up by dancing and talking with them it's an important service she'll be giving to her country.

The Pirates have managed to obtain space aboard a PBY bound for Noumea and as the plane lumbers into the air after bouncing across the water Will thinks back to the fateful mission that saw them get shot down. He tries to put those thoughts out of his head, but can't. The rest of the Pirates are trying to get as comfortable as possible for the long flight.

FDR reads the report that Ed has sent over and as he does an occasional grunt can be heard as General Marshall and Secretary of War Stimson sit silently looking at their copies.

The landings at Wyndham continued and the first Japanese assault took it. The 109 RAN BF is retreating towards Darwin. Australian planes hit an unloading convoy and hit a PG (light damage), an MSW (on fire/heavy damage) and a DD (fires).

More ineffectual Allied LBA attacks on Japanese shipping took place in northern Australia. In return for scoring no hits these planes were meat for the roaming Zeros.

104 X Zero filled the skies over Chungking and they were met by 4 X I-16c, of which 3 never returned to base. A lone Babs was again detected snooping around.

Ed has added as a footnote that so far the IJN seems to be using the KB as a raiding force, which he finds curious as it's much more formidable that anything the Allies can muster at the moment. He goes on to point out that if this is true why haven't there been any attempts on convoys since the great debacle off of the Australian coast. The only reason Ed can put forth is that the entire KB must be in use as cover for the Australian invasions. It would therefore be prudent to advise the RN to keep their carriers screening the Brisbane area, for now.

“What the hell can we do to insure that the Japanese don't get out of their foothold and take all of Australia? I want troops sent there and fast,” says FDR.

“We already have issued orders and our major problem is the lack of shipping available to carry the troops. This is compounded by the urgency and the great distances involved,” replies Stimson.

Marshall adds, "As you have already expressed our forces are going to concentrate on pushing the invaders out of Australia. Plans are already to be put into effect, as soon as the force levels come up."

The Pirates are lazing around Noumea and Ben remarks to nobody in particular that, “This is a sleepy place to see out the war. You could really work on your tan too.”

Will shakes his head and replies that, “Pretty soon this place will become a beehive of activity. It'll be crawling with men and machines. Why I'll bet you $20 that by the time that we leave here you won't recognize the place.” Ben passes on the bet.

The Benham remains on station protecting the CVs from the submarine threat that grows with each passing mile. Phil paces the bridge periodically asking if there are any sonar contacts. He also reminds the lookouts to remain sharp. The radar has broken down again and there are men trying to get it up and running.

Red and Cookie are nervously sitting at a loan officer's desk. Although they have a standing credit line they have asked for it to be expanded to a larger amount of money. Upon the bank official's return they are told that the matter will be reviewed by the bank's board at their next meeting, scheduled for the 30th. They are told that they should return on the 31st for an answer. Cookie says that they will unless the ship sails, “After all there is a war on,” he remarks. The men shake hands and Cookie and Red head back to the ship.
