I have read about certain crates should contain items, however I can't seem to find any interactive crates. Always get a red crossedover hand...

Not really. The majority of maps have one or more containers although some will be empty. You just may not be looking in the right places since most containers aren't crates but other things like lockers, cabinets, vehicles or even an outhouse.

I personally think they give away too much stuff.
