So there you are, in the middle of the Pacific. Just took a nice coral atoll with two cocoanut piers. You have battle damage, shot off your ammo, and Pearl is 1500 nm away, what to do, what to do.

Hey, presto! You got a fleet train (if you haven’t frittered it away).

A Base Section Dock, a Delta AR, a Dixie AD, a Lassen AE, a Resource AR, an Adamant AS, a Kurumba Auxiliary AO, and a Kitty Hawk AKV.

What's a AKV, is this same/replace the witp' AV?

Does the AI now make use of these (supply ships/tenders)? In witp the AI just used tenders as supply ships.

Can the British still convert ships to form their own fleet train?

An AKV is an aircraft transport – it carries and lands its cargo of planes, fully functional and ready to boogie, just like WiTP. An AV is a floating airbase for float/sea planes, just like WiTP.

All these types (except for the docks) are in WiTP. What they can do in AE is so detailed that a proper AI script for this alone would take half your hard drive. So, the AI uses these types same as it always did. That’s close enuf for regular game-play, but following the AE concept;

Level-1, they work same as they ever did.

Level-2, Woof! Woof! Woof!

No, but they had their own fleet train that appears pretty much when it did. I say no, because the Allied ability to “convert” has been significantly and drastically reduced, in general. Only a very, very limited number of classes may ‘convert’, and only like-to-like, so there’s maybe 10 to 20 merchies that qualify; and those are your best and when they are gone, they never return. Life is different in AE.

Thanks! I have more questions, but I think they'll be more fun to find out the answers to when I have AE.

A Base Section Dock . . .

Just curious, but I would assume that there are limited by a tonnage, and can only service one ship at a time, regardless of tonnage? If so, what is a typical tonnage capacity of one?

Thanks in advance and thanks for the pics, they look great!

Well, we thought about that, we really did. But the AI beaconed, and Gold was on the horizon, and so ...

No tonnage limits for the ARDs, but you only get a very few. Only one ship at a time, and once it's in dock, it's in for the duration. Can handle an Iowa, if necessary. Just think reality.

You see things like that and you wonder how anyone could consider going up against the US's industrial might.

Did some digging around and found a pic of two ships in one. I am certainly not advocating being able to do this in AE, I was just curious if it was possible.

It proved to be very unwise, as Yamamoto stongly suspected.

Max Hastings, in Retribution, makes some snide remarks about the massive US wartime output in the context of the amphibious invasion TFs and the fleet train (and the Philipines campaign). I normally like his work, but I found his take on the US desire to have overwhelming force curious. He seemed to find it an unreasonable choice or luxury when compared to the RN's limitations in the Theater.

It would be nice, and we were looking into that. But at present, they just take "a" ship, regardless of size. Maybe they can get a capacity rating in a future patch.

If an airstrike sinks a ABDS, then the ship inside sinks too (a two for one)?

Not unless the one inside is of sinking condition as well, I would think. I do think that ships being repaired by an ABDS should have a chance to be hit by weapons striking it. That's an interesting scenario actually...

Look at the picture though. How many hulls would you have to actually pierce to get that thing to sink? I imagine those barges underneath are sealed on top, and have alot of reserve buoancy.

Interesting what-if though.

Bomb hits ship in ABDS, ship goes boom!, ABDS goes boom too!

Torpedoes put some holes in the side of the ABDS, water rushes in, ABDS rolls on its side the ship inside rolls too.

Not Hardly! If the Iowa is in an ABDS and the ABDS takes enough torpedo hits to cause it to sink, it would more than likely simply drop out from under the Iowa, if Iowa's watertight integrity has not been compromised (which I cannot imagine any war zone commander doing!)

Further, you'd have to have one gigahumongibble magazine explosion to wreck one totally. It probably would not wreck all seven sections, and there should be enough reserve bouyancy - remember, it can lift 50K tons out of the water - to remain on the surface. Now, getting it out from under a wrecked ship might be a bit of a problem, but not that much harder, I'd imagine, than righting Oklahoma.
