It must be precognitive crazyness suffered by pre-Memorial Day driving blues.

Okay, let's talk about colored US Army units in the Pacific. I know a bit about colored units in the ETO, but next to nothing about the Pacific.

One could also give honorable mention to the Japanese-Americans who fought in the Med. Without googling, i recall that the most famous unit won more citations than any other unit in the US Army.

Maybe because you live where such comments were normal, they can more easily be accepted. But I thought things needed to be so PC that more though would go into the comment.

In general, sending anyone into such a situation is asking for a disatser to happen, Black, White, Brown or Yellow. So defining them as "black personnel" is creating a slur (whether intended or not). Identifying them as "personnel loading ammunition without proper training" should have been enough.

it's idiots like you that try to make everything a racial comment.

Stop! stop! Please stop!

This is a rare opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of non-white soldiers to the Pacific War. Please do not get tangled up in ya'lls shorts over some PC sensitive word or phrase. Lots of folks come from other countries that don't recognize the rules of the US PC Police. This is such an important topic and I don't want it locked. Please, back off, and lay back.

sorry. i agree the sacrafice and bravery shown by all the solders and sailors in the west lock that day is something to be honored and remembered.

not that but i saw a special on one of the last "colored divisions" that they sent to the korean war it was a shame how those guys fought their butts off and were always thrown in the worst postitions and the the generals had the gaul to claim to blame the unit for not performing like they wanted.

it was a good special though. really interesting to hear the verterans talk about the early days of the korean war.

@ Rev, JWE, etc.: IIRC, the U.S. military was really the first segment of American society where African Americans had substantial opportunities, and where desegregation, equanimity and eventual integration all took place. Is my memory in error on this? If not, wasn't there one watershed date in the 1950s where fullscale integration took place by breaking down "Black units?"

you are correct. 1872 saw the first Black inductees to Annapolis, although they did not graduate. I have a photograph of the USS Maine baseball team whose pitcher was black while MLB was segregated. The U.S. Armed Forces have long been a catalyst for change.

Speaking of toes, got my first assignment to the 319th, and one of my section chiefs was this gigantic 5’ 5” fellow from Athens Georgia, Richard (Buddy), Carter Vaughn. We shared a hootch, me being a newly, and one time after a gnarly slog thru the delta, we were drying our feet. We were exhausted and sharing a Bao Dia, and there was our naked feet side by side on the post. Next thing I hear is “Eltee, where’d you get them skinny peckerwood toes anyway?”

Buddy was at my wedding. I’m godfather to his third daughter. I was at his funeral at Arlington. I wept for a true friend and comrade. Funny how toes work sometimes, yeah?

No, photos don't lie... I'm basing my scathing criticism of your physique and hygiene on the photos you have posted of yourself.

Pretty sure that was the 24th Inf. Like a lot of garrison forces, its officers were hit and miss. It was flattened in the first few months of Korea but other US units also had that experience during that time frame.
